It’s a case of the pupil teaching the teacher!Brigidine College past pupil and local jewellery artist

Clare Poppi spoke to College staff earlier in the year about her craft in sustainable jewellery. Her ethical use of biodegradable and recycled metals sits comfortably with the Brigidine tradition of environmental stewardship.

From little things, big things grow is the catch phrase at Brigidine College Indooroopilly in 2014. The message can be taken quite literally! As illustrated, Clare’s jewellery has a living component.

“Clare reinforced the message that it’s everyone’s responsibility to care for the earth,” Mr Beiers, Deputy Principal Mission said. “Following Clare’s presentation, each student was given the gift of a tiny mustard seed to carry throughout the year to remind them that all things take time and must be nurtured to grow strong and resilient.”

As Brigidine College celebrates 85 years of providing Catholic secondary girls education this year, it is graduates like Clare, who, in everyday life and work, put into practice the lessons learnt at school. As a Brigidine past pupil, she is living out the school motto of being a strong and gentle woman.

PersonallySpeaking

As we head into autumn 2014, we will hopefully begin to enjoy some cooler weather, after, what has felt like to me, a very hot summer. I always enjoy it when there is that hint of change in the air.

Come to think of it, I just like change generally! Which is why I am excited about some of the changes we have made recently, here at Local News Publications.

You will notice that this edition of The Lake News is on full gloss paper, as opposed to the matte paper it was previously printed on.

Our publications have seen a few different printing processes over the last 20 years and we are pleased to now move to gloss paper.

Printing on full gloss paper gives a sharpness and cleaner look to advertisements, photos and text, as well as a depth of colour that can’t be achieved on the previous paper.

We know it also improves the overall look of our publications, which is something we are constantly striving for and looking to improve.

It’s a fine balance between ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and wanting to give our readers and advertisers the very best we can offer.

With that in mind, the other change we have made is the decision for our publications to be delivered to homes over a weekend, rather than mid week.

As you would know, there are rather a lot of catalogues and other material that fight for space in your letterbox during the week. Changing to a weekend delivery, where fewer items are delivered, will increase the effectiveness of the delivery and give our publications greater prominence.

Please keep in mind that whilst we have changed delivery companies, the same rules apply - houses with ‘no junk mail’ stickers will not be delivered to, as well as houses that have an obscured letterbox or houses on acreage blocks.

If none of these apply to your house, and you or someone you know does not receive The Lake News, please do let us know. We pay for full coverage and are happy to pass on any non-delivery issues to the delivery company.

To make our publications accessible to those who have ‘no junk mail’ stickers, or have moved from the area but still maintain an interest in the community, our online versions are able to be viewed from your desktop computer, your tablet or smartphone.

We know that many of you do read The Lake News online, so I wanted to remind you that any email address or website is a direct link. This means you can simply and quickly access any of the advertisers or community groups with one click. You will be taken straight to their website where you can lodge an enquiry or else be taken to your email application where you can send off an email.

Living in this technological age really is fun and exciting! It gives us all so many more ways to connect.

As always, we value and appreciate your feedback and welcome any comments, either on the new look or the delivery. And in the meantime, enjoy the cooler days and nights by getting involved with a community group or simply utilise one of our many great parks and the Lake. We live in a fantastic area - let’s make the most of it!

STOP WINKING

IN THE DARK

“Doing business without advertising is like winking

at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing,

but nobody else does.”Stueart Henderson Britt

From the desk of SCOTT EMERSON MP Member for INDOOROOPILLY

Contact Scott Emerson, 3878 1928, to discuss any community issues or concerns.

Flashing school zone signs switched on New flashing school zone lights have been installed at Graceville State School. The state

government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing light signs at over 300 school zones. The flashing lights will assist to warn motorists to slow down in school zones. These signs go a long way in reminding drivers they are approaching school zones and need to slow down immediately. Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to all pedestrians, as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.

Small Business Week 2014 AnnouncedThe second annual Queensland Small Business Week will run from 1-6 September 2014

with events right across the State aimed at supporting small businesses. Show your support for small businesses in the Indooroopilly electorate and celebrate their efforts during Queensland’s Small Business Week.

Small Business Week 2013 saw more than 90 events across the state including numerous small business breakfasts, webinars, a trade forum and a live-streamed small business panel discussion on high growth start-ups. The Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games will coordinate the week with individual events being organised by Chambers of Commerce and business groups amongst others. More information will be available on the government’s Business and Industry Portal www.business.qld.gov.au.

Thanks to Council’s great support, Brisbane’s first arboretum for Australian native trees is now officially “on the map.”

For nearly 89 years, Sherwood Arboretum has had a confusing ‘double life’ with the words ‘Sherwood Arboretum’ on Council signs and ‘Sherwood Forest Park’ on our maps.

Council’s decision last month follows a community petition and submission, lodged in December by Cr Matthew Bourke, Chairman for Environment, Parks and Sustainability, on behalf of the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA).

We thank Cr Bourke and the community, including the Member for Indooroopilly, Scott Emerson, Cr Nicole Johnson (Tennyson) and Mrs Yvonne Herbert, the wife of the late Member for Sherwood, John Herbert, for their strong support.

To celebrate the name recognition, FOSA is holding an 89th birthday ‘planting bee’ on Sunday 16th March to help transform one of the Arboretum’s waterways into a thriving home for birdlife and native animals.

All you need bring is some gloves, sun protection and a water bottle to the Joseph Street entry (the opposite end to Jolimont Street) for this two-hour community project starting at 8am.

This is part of a staged project by Habitat Brisbane and FOSA to help improve the safe movement of our birdlife and native animals, between the Brisbane River wildlife corridor and the lakes, and to lift the wetlands’ water quality.

The Arboretum is recognised for its impressive collection of more than 1000 specimen Australian native trees, some dating back to its foundation on 21 March 1925.

However, the Arboretum also is a well known ‘hot spot’ for birdlife, thanks to the wonderful variety of specimen trees and its ideal location beside the river.

The ‘planting bee’ will be followed by a brief annual meeting at 10am before a tempting 89th birthday morning tea to celebrate Brisbane’s first arboretum devoted solely to Australian native trees.

Your donation of $5 for adults for this special morning tea will help support our voluntary work.

FOSA welcomes both active volunteers and also casual members, who support our community goal to help create a bright and sustainable future for the Sherwood Arboretum.

Please email [email protected] or call 3278 6525 for more information.

Veterinary VoiceIt is starting to cool down a little following our very

hot humid summer and hopefully autumn 2014 is going to be an easier journey for our pets as we move on from the unrelenting high temperatures.

Now is a good chance to get a few ideas about dealing with your pet’s skin. The most important problem parasite that you need to keep under control throughout the year is the flea. If you have a flea infestation at this time of year it will realistically take at least six weeks to three months to get the fleas under control. The reason for this is the flea lifecycle. Fleas come on your pet for a blood meal.

Fleas spend only 5% of their lifecycle on your pet; the other 95% occurs off your pet in the environment where your pet lives. This includes the egg, larvae and pupa stages.

The backyard is a perfect breeding ground with dirt, sand, bark chips and mulch. Many of the areas outside can turn into the perfect breeding spots and in summer, the different flea development stages can be completed rapidly. This often results in an environmental contamination as fleas continue to emerge from eggs laid months beforehand.

In southeast Queensland, fleas can breed all year round. So it is important to use your flea preventation medication through the cooler months.

Ask your vet about the right flea product for your pet and the environment. There are many different products available to kill fleas and often a combination of a short and long term strategy is needed and a plan for removing the environmental contamination.

It is hard work trying to get rid of a flea problem, especially at this time of year. Remember, even with flea treatments, fleas need to come onto your pet to contact the flea product and die. It is important to get the maximum benefit from your flea treatment which include:• treating all pets in the household• using the right product for your pet’s weight• give the treatment on the same day every month• wait 24-48 hours after washing your dog to apply a

flea treatment. It works better on a dirty dog with an oily coat.Watch out for ear infections during autumn as well.

Get in early and clean your dog’s ears weekly with ear cleaner and especially after swimming or a bath. You will be able to tell if your dog has an ear infection as they shake their head, scratch near the ear or rub the ear on the ground and carpet, often this is accompanied by a foul smell and discharge.

Kind regardsSuzanne BainHead, St John’s Anglican College

Kindy to Year 6 07 3372 0888Years 7 to 12 07 3372 [email protected]

Hello ReadersThere was a great buzz around St John’s as our students eagerly started their school year. We know from experience that students who commit to being involved in all there is to offer, build their confidence, learn how to get along with others, establish positive relationships and do well academically. Such is the case with our 2013 graduates who have received the highest ever academic results in the history of the College.

The achievement of 6, OP1’s from a cohort of 88 eligible students is not only the highest number in the history of the College but a very credible percentage and favourably compares with Queensland’s best schools. Having 59 students in the OP 1-10 band is very pleasing and due largely to the commitment of the individuals involved and the whole year level working together to support one another in the goal of producing their very best outcome. 89% of our students were in the OP 1-15 band, a statistic which has been rising every year and places St John’s favourably in the rankings. The Core Skills Test scores were very credible and is a testimony to the hard work applied by the students and the encouragement and challenge provided by our very talented teachers.

Recently our College community welcomed back our graduates of 2013 who received an OP 1-5 and invited them to sign the Scholar’s Book which records their fine achievement in the Archives of College.

Some students opted to study the Business Certificate Three Course as part of their senior studies course through our partnership with AXIOM College, which guaranteed those students the equivalent of an OP 15 upon completion.

Over the years as we have developed our Senior Pathways program which has provided a strengthening of post school outcomes for St John’s graduates with future study and employment options for our young people in the courses of their choice being assured.

Chelmer and District Probus Club Update

Despite the heat recently, a huge roll up of enthusiastic Graceville gardeners turned out in response to a working bee call up.

Many hands make light work, and that was certainly true as the gardeners set to work with a vengeance.

The storeroom was cleared, water blasted, possum proofed and reorganised. (We will never be able to find anything now!) Paula and John from Benarrawa came to assist with the clean out and reorganisation. Their ongoing support and interest in our projects are, as always, appreciated.

While the clean-up was underway, work commenced on the prototype of the cyprus timber edging on our first raised garden bed. The garden is the grateful recipient of a grant which will enable members to build raised garden beds and purchase a quantity of soil to improve the overall health of the gardens and also improve the drainage and makeup of the beds.

Once the prototype is finished and improvements or tweaking taken care of, all the garden beds in the top part of the garden will be raised, and these gardens will be planted with vegetables and suitable plants to take advantage of the mild autumn weather.

The two Johns visited Greening Australia, and as a result, have now planted out 45 native trees in and around the gully area. This whole area will look an absolute treat once these trees are established. The gully area has great soil and a thriving bush tucker garden is already well under way.

One of the things that makes our community garden

such a wonderful project is the real sense of ‘community’ that it imbues in our neighbourhood; the morning tea at the Graceville Community Garden was an absolute United Nations of helpers.

Our gardeners came from New Zealand, Iran, New Caledonia, France and of course good old Aus. Gardening is a thread of commonality between all races and cultures, and it is this great sense of belonging and welcome that makes the Graceville Community Garden so important in the community. (The great mix of nationalities also makes for a wonderful spread at morning tea as well!)

Gardeners took the opportunity to bid a fond ‘farewell and return soon’ to Isabella and Patrick as they make their departure back to New Caledonia. They have been long term members of the Community Garden and we wish them well and look forward to their return.

Visit www.gracevillecommunitygarden.org.au/ and if you have any queries please contact us via the website or alternatively phone John on 3379 7532.

The Graceville Community Garden is located beside Benarrawa Community Centre, located at the corner of Waratah Ave and Cordalba St, Graceville. The street sign on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue will soon be sporting a directional sign reading ‘Community Garden’, thanks to the assistance of Nicole Johnston, Councillor for Tennyson Ward.

Everyone is invited to the garden during our regular Sunday working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am.

The rebirthed Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship.

February saw our outings group head to Southbank for a tour of the State Library followed by a tour of the latest exhibition at GOMA. After that everyone headed for the GOMA café for much needed rest and refreshments.

Our February speaker, Beryl Roberts, local historian and writer, gave us a fascinating insight into the origins of Brisbane’s suburbs and locality names. History we hadn’t heard before.

At our next meeting on Wednesday 26th March Dr Andrew Rozefelds, head of Ancient Environments, Geology and Paleontology at the Queensland Museum, will speak about ‘Museum Exhibitions: turning Pandora’s Box into an Alladin’s Cave’. Dr Rozefelds will provide an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes in the museum with the focus on the latest exhibition ‘Lost Creatures’. So come along and hear about Queensland’s fascinating geology and fossil finds. New finds are being unearthed almost daily like the fossil finds in the excavations of the tunnel at Geebung.

If you are interested in joining a warm and friendly group of active retirees and would like to learn something of Brisbane’s ancient history and fossil finds, you are most welcome to come along as a guest on March 26th.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees.

For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540.

Committee members, volunteers, disabled folk and their carers, support groups, and local politicians all gathered at the Pamphlett Sea Scouts Den to launch Sailability Graceville earlier in the year.

Sailability, a world-wide organisation with nine clubs in Queensland, offers sailing experience to everyone. Safe, stable two-seater Access 303 sailing dinghies allow all skill and ability levels to enjoy messing about on the water, under the close supervision of a powerboat.

A crane on the pontoon allows wheelchair users to be lowered into the dinghies.

Sailability Graceville also has the use of a large power catamaran for those who would like to get out on the water but are not yet ready to try an Access.

The opening ceremony was chaired by John Hamaty (Sailability Queensland and Sailability Graceville President). There were messages of support from Michael Bischa of Pamphlett Sea Scouts, Commodore John Price of Oxley Sailing Club, MP for Moreton Graham Perrett and MP for Ryan Jane Prentice.

Councillor for Tennyson Nicole Johnson then ‘launched’ an Access dinghy on the den lawn. A barbecue lunch provided by Brisbane Macgregor Lions and Oxley Sherwood Lions was enjoyed and 18 disabled folk tried sailing or partyboating.

Sailability Graceville will operate every Tuesday from 10am. Bookings are essential – phone 0402 962 954.

Volunteers are required! No sailing skills are needed – a vital part of Sailability operations is the off-water support. For more details, go to sailabilitygraceville.org.

In my last column I spoke of our involvement with the local schools in researching the names on the local monuments as a Centenary of ANZAC project.

In gathering together some basic information and areas to be covered in the research, I have found the history of our local area to be truly a fascinating subject.

The Sherwood Shire sent 274 of its citizens off to the First World War and 52 of those, including one nursing sister, paid the supreme sacrifice. The names of those 52 are inscribed on a copper bronze honour roll attached to the obelisk in the Graceville Memorial Park.

This park was dedicated a Memorial Park in 1919. Two rows of trees each planted in memory of one of the fallen were planted forming an unbroken avenue from Oxley Road up to the obelisk. The founder of our sub-branch and our first President, Lieutenant Maurice Little, who lost his sight when badly wounded at Quinn’s Post at Gallipoli, unveiled the memorial on the 29th of November 1920.

ANZAC ser vices have been held at the Graceville Memorial since 1930. Our service at Graceville on ANZAC Day replicates the first ANZAC Day service held in 1916, using the same hymns and concluding with “God Save The Queen” , so if you attend the service at Graceville you will now know why that service is held in that format.

Have you ever thought you would like to add some Australian native plants to your garden, and you are not sure which ones to choose or how to look after them? Would you be interested in learning more about our wonderful native plants from the people who love to grow them?

If so, you are invited to the meeting of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) on 15 March in the Centenary Uniting Church Hall, 37 Riverhills Rd, Middle Park. Come at 9.30 for morning tea before the program proper which will begin at 10am and features a talk by Ed Parker from this area. He will talk about the reserves and native plants in the Centenary suburbs.

There will be an opportunity to talk to members who can help you find out how to learn more about the wonderful variety of native plants for all types of gardens. Many natives can be added to existing gardens. There is an opportunity to pick up a native plant in the raffle, enjoy a shared lunch and a guided walk along the Westlake – Mt Ommaney riverside reserve.

The Western Suburbs Branch of SGAP invites you to join them on 15 March, to enjoy finding out some more about wonderful Australian native plants.

For more information about the Society for Growing Australian Plants, go to www.sgapqld.org.au.

Our tours co-ordinator has planned a trip in early March to a Tiger Prawn Farm at Jacob’s Well, where we will be taking our eskies to bring home some fresh seafood. This tour is followed by lunch at a local inn. In late March, a boat trip down the Brisbane River is planned. Lunch and afternoon tea will be served as we cruise. We are waiting for confirmation of a tour of Government House in April.

The theatre group is looking forward to seeing Guys and Dolls at QPAC Concert Hall in mid March.

Due to our busy round of activities, the Dinner group will now meet every six weeks to enjoy good food and good conversation.

April’s speaker will talk about Fire Ants. We do not have a speaker for March as it is our AGM.

Mah Jong and Scrabble groups continue to have a lot of fun and friendship.

The lunch group continues to meet each month at a local venue to enjoy good food, laughter and pleasant conversation.

The Book group continues to meet each month at a member’s home with a discussion of each month’s selection. In February, members enjoyed reading The Bird Watcher by William McInnes. The March selection is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. This story is set in northern Iceland in 1829 and is one of the best selling books for 2013. There is no book group meeting for April as Anzac Day falls on their meeting day. The April selection is Down Under by Bill Bryson.

Due to Good Friday being on our usual meeting day, Sherwood Probus will meet on April 11 which is the second Friday.

Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area.

Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club.
