Fall Garden Tips September is the turning point for southern gardens. Envision what you want the garden to look like and make a list of
things you want to accomplish: a new veggie garden, a color
garden or an added piece of art.
Before planting fall vegetables, mix 2 - 3 inches of compost into the soil; mushroom compost and our local county compost are two
excellent choices.
Plan your fall container plantings and take inventory of your soilless potting mix.
It’s a good time to get deals at garden centers!

betty buzz: SEASONAL HOME
Updating your decor for the season keeps your house looking fresh! Interior Designer, Ginger Brewton, offers these easy tips for getting the look you want, when you want it.★ Pillows Pillow covers are easy and
inexpensive to change out. In the winter, use heavier fabric such as velvets and wool, and in the summer switch to a lighter fabric such as a linen or cotton.
★ Bedding/Blankets Switch out your bedding to give your bedroom a
new look. If you have a decorative duvet/comforter for the winter, opt for a white duvet cover for the summer. If you had blankets on the bed, take them off and use the lighter pillows here as well. Replace any heavy blankets throughout the house with cozy, light cotton blankets.
★ Pictures & Art Many of us have more pictures than we know what
to do with, so switch them out! Use the heavier, darker framed pictures during the winter months and the lighter framed pictures during the summer.
★ Rugs Layer a smaller rug over a sisal rug. In the winter do
the layered look and in the summer remove the top rug and go with just the sisal. Sisals always bring a more relaxed, summer feel into a room.
★ Bring in the Flowers Nothing gives a sense of the season more than fresh
flowers or plants that are in bloom.

Family Time on a Budget

your read.
• DIY Water Park: set up the sprinkler and break out the hose.
Add some water balloons for extra splash!
• Camping: State parks offer camp sites at very reasonable rates. Don’t want to go too far

Top 5 Time Management Musts
No time to attend a time management conference? Sarah Hays of YuDu Concierge shares
all you need to know!
• List – Make your list every night, review it every morning
and revise it again at night.
• Prioritize – Being busy is not the same as being productive.
Decide what is most important and get it done.
• Delegate – if it doesn’t bring you money or happiness,
consider delegating to an expert, a colleague or a family member.
• Focus – Lose the distractions and stop multitasking! You’ll get it done quicker if you focus on
one thing at a time.
• Act – Stop putting the same items on your list. Either do it,
delegate it or delete it.

Outfit 101
Want to put together a simple, yet elegant look? Choose a
statement piece to work around (a bright pair of shoes, bag or
a scarf). Build around it by choosing a neutral palate and
keep the rest of the outfit within that palate.
Looking for a more inspired look? The September issues of the big fashion magazines
(Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, etc.) are considered the most important
of the year and feature the trends and looks for the season.
Pick up your copy and start an inspiration board of looks that you like and want to try. Take
it with you on your next shopping trip.

Look Younger, Longer
• Minimize the appearance of pores. Use a cleanser with
salicylic acid.
• Wear sunscreen all the time.
• Be mindful of what you put in your body. Don’t smoke,
limit alcohol intake and watch your diet.
• Look for products that include the ingredient hydroquinone, proven to erase age spots, and retinol, proven to reduce fine
lines over time.
• Stop picking at your face and touching the skin around
your eyes!
• Get plenty of exercise.
• Go to sleep! Your skin needs time to rest and repair itself.

If the summer heat and ocean salts are drying out your locks, try a different routine in the shower:
condition first! Comb a little conditioner through the shafts and ends of the hair, and while that’s
working its magic, shampoo the scalp to maintain volume. Completely rinse then re-apply conditioner to the ends and rinse again. Try to stick to a mild water temperature or even cooler, especially when rinsing.
These little steps can add up to a lot less frizz, allowing your smoothing products and detangling
to work with a lot more success. - JOANNA KATZ, Katz Hair Studio

6BUSY WOMAN TIPS
Work Out a New WorkoutIf you find “regular exercise” boring, get out of the rut with
these alternatives:
• Learn how to dance: ballet, ballroom, hip hop, jazz, tap, African, belly dancing, salsa,
swing, shag, etc. (see page 13)
• Learn a sport: golf, tennis, basketball, lacrosse, soccer…it’s
never too late to learn.
• Play with the kids: a game of tag, dodge ball, t-ball, etc.
• Walk the Cooper River Bridge or the paths at Charles
Towne Landing.
• Garden: weed the beds and get ready for Fall. (see page 7)
• Housework: get buff while you scrub.
• Help a friend move: another notch on your karma belt!
• Tour the town: shop or take a walking tour designed by you.

BUSY WOMAN TIPS
Bridal Beauty
Makeup • For morning ceremonies, use lighter colors, especially if the
ceremony is outdoors.
• Evening events require a darker makeup application, but
don’t get carried away.
• Consider the lighting of your venue. If you must be under
fluorescent lighting, make sure to avoid green tones of makeup.
• Mineral makeup will make your skin appear oily in camera flashes; opt for something with
a matte finish.
Before the Big Day • Schedule a “dress rehearsal”
with your hair dresser and makeup artist - or DIY -
to make sure everything is just how you want it.
• For the brightest smile on your big day, begin using
whitening strips at least two weeks in advance.
• Take good care of your skin leading up to the wedding,
but do not introduce any new products or regimens at least a month before the wedding as you may have a bad reaction.
Day of the Wedding • Assign a bridesmaid the job of carrying your lipstick and
powder for frequent touch ups.
• Be sure to have extra bobby pins and hair spray handy to
help secure your up do if it falls.
• Feel beautiful, look beautiful: consider having a pair of slippers
or dressed-up flip flops handy should your feet be aching from
all of that dancing!

BUSY WOMAN TIPS
Veil 101
Picking the Perfect Veil
• If you’re a petite bride, choose an elbow-length veil or shorter.
If you’re 5’7” or taller, opt for a veil that falls closer to
your fingernails.
• A veil should fall just above or below any intricate detailing
on the dress.
• Keep in mind your desired placement of the veil in
your hair; different spots on the head yields longer or
shorter veil lengths.
Know Your Veils
• Mantilla: Tulle with lace at its hem; draped over the entire head
• Blusher: A short veil that covers the bride’s face;
usually does not extend past a bride’s chin
• Flyaway: Stiff, short veil
• Ballerina: Straight, tulle veil that does not extend
past the ankle
• Cathedral: Very full veil; its length can be measured
Veil Alternatives
• Flowers
• Feathers
• Antique clip or brooch
• Hat or Fascinator
Don’t be afraid to think out of the box when it comes to planning the cuisine for your wedding. Some of
the best weddings have their own signature dishes or cocktails that showcase the personality of the couple
and they’re always a big hit with the guests.- Chef John Zucker of Cru Cafe and Catering

Toast of the Town
• There are generally 3 speeches at a wedding reception given
by: the bride’s father, the groom and the best man.
It’s your day - you can have more if you’d like!
• A good time to make toasts is just before you cut your
wedding cake.
• Make sure servers pass around the champagne ahead
of time or that guests are given ample notice to replenish
their drinks.
• Do not clink your crystal to get everyone’s attention; stand and
ask for everyone’s attention.
When preparing your toast:
• Take your time recording your musings over several weeks then
craf it into one piece
• Personal anecdotes and famous quotes are great openers
and closers (keep it clean)
• Genuine, heartfelt words never fail, so be sincere
