MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Quality Facilities Enhance Student Learning

AISM's 20-year history is marked by continuous growth in student numbers, expansion of facilities and improve-ment in the quality of educational programs. Now, after several years of planning based on feasibility studies, fi-nancial modeling and increasing demand from both local and international communities, we are about to begin the design of a new Facilities Master Plan that will direct the next phases of development.

Facilities are an important precondition for a quality educational program, and AISM'S plans for expansion include several key facilities that will impact directly on our students' learning environment:

Additional classrooms provide for increased student numbers and allow us to offer more course options and student support services.

A new gymnasium allows for diversity within the PE curriculum across all grade levels.

A well-designed Early Learning Center supports the development needs of young learners, integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.

Our goal is to build the necessary infrastructure to ensure successful delivery of our educational program and se-cure AISM’s position as a premier academic institution for years to come. We will keep you informed throughout the planning process. Mary Jo Heatherington, PhD School Director

BRUNO NHAVENE

Bruno is a very talented young man who has a gift for playing tennis. Over the Dec/Jan break he went to Windhoek to represent Mozambique in a tennis tour-nament. Not only did he rep-

resent his country proudly and with aplomb, he won the doubles match! Congratulations Bruno – you make us very proud.

LEADERSHIP IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Professional Learning Communities (PLC)

The professional staff is allocated a PLC at the be-ginning of the academic year. There are 5 communi-ties who work together to drive learning in their area of responsibility. ELC and K G1 and 2 G3 – 5 Single Subject Teachers Support Teachers Teachers work collaboratively to drive learning through action research, examining students’ at-tainment of the school standards, setting and devel-oping common work goals and collectively develop-ing themselves professionally.

THE WEATHER

As we move into the hot season please ensure your child has a hat and a water bottle EVERY DAY. Stu-dents without hats will not be allowed in the play-ground – it’s just too hot. Students will be encour-aged to drink water and teachers of younger chil-dren will ensure their classes have water breaks.

PE KIT

The PTA has sourced a PE kit for all students in the school. Currently, we are encouraging all primary students to wear it on the day they have PE, along with trainers. The wearing of PE kit will become

obligatory in the near future to ensure students are appropriately clothed for all PE activities.

PE kit can be purchased from the After School Activ-ities office between 07h30 and 15h00 Mon-Thu, and o7h30-14h30 on Fridays Shorts : 320Mtn

COLLABORATION IN THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM (PYP)

Grade 5 students completed their ‘How We Express Our-selves’ unit of inquiry on reli-gions this week. They had been given the task, in groups, of cre-ating a new religion based on aspects of major world religions already studied in class. They presented their work to parents and teachers and received many compliments on their commit-ment, enthusiasm and originali-ty. There may even have been one or two ‘converts’!

“Did you have any resolutions about school?

“ no… I think ( hesitation)…… no (resignation)”

Graduate!!!

I took a casual stroll through the campus this morning and asked students if they had made any new year’s resolutions

regarding school. You could tell those who hadn’t ... the nervous glances between friends probably meant they felt

they should have. “No problem if you didn’t, I was just curious”. The relief was evident. However, there does seem

to be an interesting trend; the older the students, the fewer commitments made to resolutions. Perhaps they had

made many, but they just had nothing to do with school. Here are some of the resolutions anyway. Happy New

Year!

This annual festival aims to make connections with young people in Mozambique through the Arts. All students

benefit from the multi-cultural learning experiences. Participating AISM students each sponsor a visiting student

who would otherwise not be able to enjoy this type of experience. The program consists of 10 different work-

shops, each running for a total of 9 hours over the course of the weekend, with a culminating performance on

the Sunday.

We are recruiting enthusiastic, hardworking, organized individuals to help plan and run this festival. If you are

The “ABCs” of malaria prevention are:

A) Be Aware of the risk, the incubation period and the main symptoms.

B) Avoid being Bitten by mosquitoes.

C) Take anti-malarial drugs ( Chemoprophylaxis) when appropriate,

to prevent infection from developing into clinical disease.

D) Seek Diagnosis and treatment immediately.

Should you require any further information please come in to the Nurses Office .

If you have some time between 07h30 and 14h30 this

BOOK FAIR

“I was just working on The Link – Book of the Month – and can’t resist getting in-

volved. Among others by the same author, I have read both Engleby and Birdsong,

and thought Birdsong was absolutely terrific. It left a lasting impression on me and

sparked a huge interest in The Great War. I went on to read and watch whatever I

could lay my hands on about WWI. Engleby was also good, but left me with less to

think about. Stalker/sociopath vs. The Great War! It’s one person’s opinion but what

do you think about switching Book of the Month?” [Angie, The Link Editor, Dec

2012]

“Hmm … I read Birdsong, and I must say I loved it, but I still vote for Engleby. I

think there is much more to it than a thriller. Like Birdsong it delves into that fascinat-

ing – or should I say horrifying - side of human nature, and what we are capable of in

extreme situations. I also like the way it broaches the subject of teacher and parental

responsibility in situations of bullying and child abuse. “

Let our readers decide! [Andree, The Mabukwini Librarian, Dec 2012]

Our newly formed Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams

hit the courts on Saturday January 26, for the first time. Varsity

played a strong team from Costa do Sol and JV played Escola Estrela

Vermelha. Both teams lost their matches but gained valuable experi-

The Boys Varsity and JV teams played “away games” at Escola Fran-

competitive but our boys lost both of them.
