Online Connections Genealogy Across Indiana
The Letters of “Raintree County”: A Database of People Mentioned in
Correspondence to Nineteenth-Century Hoosiers
Compiled by James B. Cash
In 1947 Jimmy (James B.) Cash and his cousin Stevie (John Stephen) Burris discovered a
cache of old family letters in the attic of their grandparents’ home in New Castle, Indiana. The
letters were primarily written to and from family members in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Henry
County, Indiana, and were divided between the two cousins, who originally hoped to salvage the
old stamps and sell them. In 2002 Cash began devoting himself to the letters in his possession,
transcribing them and cataloging biographical data on the people mentioned within. The result is
the Raintree County Letters Project, which consists of letter transcriptions; an extensive written
compilation of biographical and historical information on the people, events, and places
mentioned in the letters; and a biographical overview of the material in database form.
An article by Cash, further detailing the project and its contents, will be published in the
fall/winter 2008 issue of The Hoosier Genealogist: Connections. The original letters and copies
of Cash’s transcriptions were acquired by the Indiana Historical Society and are being digitized.
They will be available to researchers in March 2009, online through the Web site of the Society’s
William Henry Smith Memorial Library.
The related database published here in Online Connections was compiled originally to
keep track of those 311 people mentioned or otherwise featured in the compiler’s set of letters.
The data is based upon the best information that the compiler could find in sources such as
census records, county histories, military records, and so forth. Approximately one-fourth of the
material was fact-checked by Family History Publications staff, but data may still be incomplete
or incorrect. In publishing the database, the compiler hopes to obtain from others who are
interested suggestions for correcting or amending the database. Such information may be sent to
James B. Cash, 3613 Twinbrook Lane, Kettering, Ohio 45429.

Explanation of Database Fields
Name
The names of the 311 people mentioned or implied in the letters are listed in alphabetical
order by last name. Within a group of people with a particular surname, however, the entries are
not alphabetical by first names.
The known first name is given. Sometimes spellings vary; also, people sometimes
reversed their first and middle names. When known, maiden names are indicated by parentheses
around a surname.
The middle name was often significant, indicating familial relationship or admiration for
personal virtues or political views, as in George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, or Thomas
Jefferson. Several families with German American surnames named their sons after George
Washington; Democrats named their sons after Thomas Jefferson and may have supported his
ideas in regard to independent small farmers and limited government. Only two are named for
Andrew Jackson, and one seems named after Thomas Hart Benton, a sometime-friend and rival
of Jackson.
There is a great deal of spelling variation in last names, especially with German names;
the compiler tried to use the most common one.
Birth Date
A specific birth date is given when it is available and seems reasonably accurate. Not
surprising, most of those included in the database were born in the 1800s. One was born about
1540, four in the 1600s, thirty-nine in the 1700s, and seven in the 1900s. Twenty dates of birth
are unknown but are most likely in the 1800s. For those without specific birth dates, the years
were inferred from the census or other sources; therefore, the year could be plus or minus one
year. If the year is guessed there is a question mark; if it is inferred from other information there
is an approximate mark (~).
Nationality
This category generally refers to the nationality of one or both parents of the person
listed. There is some ambiguity with German Swiss, who may be classified as German because

they have German language names, and Scots-Irish, who commingled with the Irish. Most of the
Irish people listed were Protestants and probably Scots-Irish, but some were Protestant Irish,
especially Quakers. The purpose of this field is to get at the culture of families and individuals;
the database shows some cultural variation, although in the compiler’s opinion, in the late 1700s
and early 1800s the country showed signs of creating a unique American culture.
Sibling Order
One of the compiler’s observations in writing about the 311 people listed in the database
is the effect of sibling order on lives, so he documented this where known. The numerator is the
subject’s birth order, and the denominator is the number of total children in the family. In certain
instances parents had more than one family. This would change family dynamics, and in such
cases the database lists first or second family.
Married
Of those whose marital status is known, 181 were married, 53 were not, 2 were divorced,
and 2 were separated.
Spouse 1 and Spouse 2
Names are included when known. Sometimes last names are inferred.
Father from, Mother from
These are interesting fields that help show migration patterns.
Residence 1, 2, and 3
Residences for the people listed in the database are generally shown by county and state,
although in some instances only the state is known. For some, three residences are known. For
others the locations of birth and death are known, but places they lived in between are not
known. In these cases, the Residence 2 field is blank. Some of the people, especially military
professionals or adventurous young men, lived in eight or ten residences; in such instances the
compiler tried to pick what he considered the three most important places. This information is
valuable in showing migration patterns and economic opportunities.

Military
Fifteen known Confederate soldiers and ninety-nine U.S. soldiers (most volunteers) of
the Civil War are included in the database. One can read unit histories in official Civil War
records. The main Confederate unit listed is the Fifty-seventh Virginia recruited in Franklin
County, Virginia, and the surrounding area. It was a key unit under General Robert E. Lee and
was a part of Major General George E. Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg. All the soldiers from the
Fifty-seventh Virginia were killed, wounded, or captured. The main Union units mentioned in
the letters are the Thirty-sixth, Fifty-seventh, and Eighty-fourth Indiana; they fought mainly in
Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Georgia.
Occupation 1, 2, and 3
In general, the main occupations of the individuals are listed in these fields as there is not
always room to show all the occupations practiced by each individual throughout a lifetime.
These fields show a general trend away from farming to town- or city-based occupations,
reflecting national trends during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Religious Background and Religion
The population of people listed in the database is diverse, reflecting a strong
Pennsylvania, Mid-Atlantic component, with membership in German and mid-European sects of
religious groups such as Moravians, Mennonites, and Dunkers and small but important British
sects (including Welsh, Scots, and Irish) such as the Quakers. People who belonged to such small
sects, who came to America primarily for religious freedom, are probably over-represented in
this database. These fields also reflect the growth of the Methodist and Baptist churches in the
1800s. When known, subsects are listed, such as the Anti-Missionary (Primitive) Baptists and
Wesleyan Methodists. There is also a small group of freethinkers.
Politics 1, 2, and 3
These fields show the evolution of political beliefs in an individual over time (if any).
Part of the reason for having three fields is to cover the Whigs. Some Whigs evolved to the anti-
slavery Free Soilers and then to the Republican Party. This reflects the political turmoil of the

nineteenth century, the antislavery crusade, and the Civil War and its aftermath. In general, it
appears to the compiler that Democrats were more stable in their allegiances.
Death, Cause, and Age
All of these entries are specific when known. If a birth date is unknown, the
corresponding age at death may be off slightly; causes of death were often not given before the
1900s. Age is given as cause of death if the person is more than seventy-five years of age.
Why in Database
The database began with thirty-one letter or document writers and five recipients. Most of
the rest of the people listed in the database were mentioned in the letters. A few of these are
mysterious people, with misspelled names, initials or first names given only, or uncertainty as to
place(s) of residence. Some of those listed in the database were implied but not mentioned
specifically in the letters; and some people were included in the database because of relationships
they had with or significance they had for people mentioned in the letters. The abbreviation
“Compl story” is used to indicate that an individual is included in order to complete the story of
one or more of the people mentioned in the letters.
Part in Project
The Raintree County Letters Project has four parts: 1) Letters of a Virginia Family;
2) Pennsylvania Dutch Letters; 3) Letters from Indiana Soldiers in the Civil War; and 4) A Quiet
Ending. The field “Part in Project” tells which part of the project the individual is associated
with. Some are in more than one part.
Special Notes
This comment field includes miscellaneous items of interest.
