President’s Message

After having bored many of you with the F&B operations over the past few months, I would like to leave this area and to move over to the bigger picture of the Club’s operations – in this case the finances of the Club.

The auditors have just released the final draft audited accounts to us, after a month of hard and tedious work done to ensure that our financial statements are in compliance with the applicable Financial Reporting Standards and free of material mis-statements – or in audit parlance, that the accounts are “true and fair”. So how have we been doing recently?

Not so well, in truth. In fact, the Club registered a deficit of RM 175,675 for 2012; and over the last three years (2010/2011/2012) we had an accumulated deficit of RM 595,000. This compares, or rather contrasts, with a accumulated surplus of RM 6,059,000 for the previous 12 years since 1998. While this may not be an immediate concern given the reserves built up over the years, the medium to long-term outlook may not be promising if the Club continues to run deficits in the years ahead. This would, for example, certainly impact on the Club’s ability to renew other facilities not included in the current upgrading plan.

To share with you my concerns, I have done a review of the financials over the past 15 years. This revealed some clear and visible trends in the following key areas, showing why revenue is on a downward slope while expenditure is on an upward trend:

a. Membership income, ie Members’ subscriptions, continued to slide from a high of RM2,412,000 in 1998 to a low of 2,139,000 in 2012 – a fall of approximately RM 200,000,

b. Personnel costs meanwhile increased from RM1,624,000 to RM1,850,000 – an increase of approximately RM 220,000.00.

c. Energy costs and utilities were contained in 2002 to RM680,000 (compared to a high of RM750,000 in 1998), but now are slowly moving upward and amounted to RM 830,000 last year. These costs are likely to increase further when fuel subsidies are reduced. d. The Club’s spending on Members’ activities, including sports, recreation and entertainment, has been on a recent upward trend, from only RM160,000 in 2007 to over RM 600,000 in 2011.

e. Slot machine income has been the main contributor to the Club’s surpluses over all this time. However, it has yo-yoed over the past 15 years from lows of RM1.378 million to heights of RM2.075 million. It took a dive last year to below RM1.3 million for the first time ever, contributing heavily to our deficit of nearly RM176,000.

In order for the Club to keep up with the increasing operating costs and at the same time maintain the present level of activities for Members, we need to generate more revenue: of around RM4.6 million. Key areas for revenue generation are membership income and the slot machines. We are already doing something about membership income, by intensifying our marketing and sales efforts, with some success. This should produced increased income in the form of transfer fees and monthly subscriptions. The slot machines are however more difficult. This is not something that management can really control. What we are doing, though, is also to keep close tabs on costs. To that end, the management have initiated or are in the process of implementing a number of programmes for cost reduction as well to improved productivity.

The GC is confident that the Club would be able return a smaller deficit for the current year, with the successful implementation of the various initiatives outlined early in the present GC’s term and our cost reduction /productivity improvement programmes.

On a separate note, we wish to announce that our General Manager, Mr David Siew, is leaving us at the end of May when his contract expires. David has been with us for the past four and a half years, and has worked tirelessly through thick and thin, especially during the turbulent years of 2009/2010 when the Club went into a sort of constitutional crisis. On behalf of the General Committee and all Members, I would like to record our appreciation of his service to the Club and wish him all the best in the future.

STAFF DAY

The traditional Staff Day celebration was successfully organized by the Staff Day Organizing Committee on 1st May 2013 at the Cerating Hall. About 150 Raintree Staff, their spouses and the General Committee Members attended the occasion.

The theme for the 29th Annual Staff Dinner was “Crazy Colour Night” and most of the Staff dressed up according to the col-our theme. The Opening Ceremony of the 29th Annual Staff Dinner was the “Cutting Cake” by the President, Mr Winson Han Mean Kwong, General Committee Members and the Organizing Committee Members. The performers for the night was the Bob Dancer and Raintree Staff.

The Collective Agreement 2012-2014 with improved terms and benefits, between The Raintree Club and the Club Employees Union Peninsular Malaysia was signed on Thursday, 16th May 2013

The Club was represented by the President/Staff Affairs Chairman, Mr Winson Han Mean Kwong, Deputy Chairman of Staff Affairs, Mr Chow Seck Kai and Hon. Treasurer, Mr Peter Lim Chee Min while the Club Employees Union Peninsular Malaysia was represented by the President, En Mokhtaruddin Johan, General Secretary, En Rudy Rusly and Treasurer, Cik Siti Azura Abdul Jalil.

A Men’s Round Robin Tournament was held at the Raintree Club from 20th March to 4th April 2013. Over the 2 week period, a group of 10 men fought a running battle for the top spot. Each player was partnered with a competitor at least once. At the end of the event, Rashidi Harun, HC Lau, Simon Tan and Forehand Choong managed to occupy the top 4 rungs in first to fourth positions respectively. Other players include Alan Low, Scott Ling, Francis Goh, Johnny Chua, Soh G.L. and Kurosawa-san. The top 4 placings took home club vouchers and the rest, a pair of socks each for their participation. Kudos to all the players and till the next round robin event!

In conjunction with Good Friday in Singapore on 29th March 2013, an intrepid team led by En Kamal from the Singapore Keppel Club made the trek to KL to take on the Raintree Club

in a friendly tennis match. Despite the unusual Friday 3pm kickoff time, the Raintree Club was able to field a decent team on the working Friday. BT Lau and Kurosawa-san, Gordon Reid and Forehand Choong, Nina Lim and Chow Xian Hui, Faiz Rash-idi and GL Soh, SK Yeo and Chow Xian Hui managed to deliver winning points for Raintree Club. KH Chan and Big Lau unfortu-nately got ambushed by a stealth killer father-son pairing. GL Soh and Rashidi Harun succumbed in a nail biter concluded by tight tie breaker. Terry Wong and Nina Lim mounted a ferocious comeback from 0-4 down only to be cruelly denied the win by 5-7. The festivities concluded with a fun dinner at Cempaka Hall.

Badminton Friendly – Raintree vs Kelab Darul Ehsan (Away Game), 17 March 2013

A total of 13 players with 3 Juniors registered for the event on 17th Mar 2013, hosted by Kelab Darul Ehsan. The event players consisted of 3 Mixed Doubles, 2 Juniors Doubles and 5 Men’s Doubles.

Raintree Club was unable to field any Lady player in the line up. KDE was very sporting to field in the Ladies in the Men’s event.All games were closely contested and the result turned up in fa-vour of Raintree Club. We won 3 games, drew 5 games and KDE won 2 games.

KDE was very generous and entertained our Raintree Club players to a buffet lunch. The day ended with an exchange of souvenirs by both Clubs, with Raintree Club looking forward to host the next friendly event in the near future.

Badminton Friendly – Raintree vs Kelab Darul Ehsan (Away Game), 17th March 2013

BOC/GC Invitation vs STAFF Invitation 20th April 2013

This annual event was hosted by the Raintree Club Badminton Committee (BOC) on 20th April 2013 at Raintree Club.

All the players from BOC/GC and STAFF Teams had a wonder-ful evening full of fun and fellowship interaction. It was a very keenly contested event and results were very close. We believed it was not important which team won but maintaining the great camaraderie between the players.

The two players with the most improved performance for the event are:-

Raintree Vice President and Sport Chairman - Mr James Lee and Club Senior Sports Executive - Mr Brian Ho. Both players were awarded with souvenirs for their outstanding perform-ance.

The event was graced by the Club’s Vice President and Sport Chairman, Mr James Lee who later during dinner gave away prizes and souvenirs to the Members of BOC and Staff. In his message, he hoped that the event will be held annually or pos-sibly bi-annually.

Karaoke Fellowship Night with Penang Sport Club (PSC)Date : 23rd March 2013, SaturdayVenue: Karaoke LoungeTime : 7.30pm

The Club’s invited guest from PSC (17 of them) arrived around 7.15pm, lead by their Karaoke Chairman & Member of General Committee, Ms Irene Lee Mei Ping.

1st Quarterly Golf Medal@ Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia – 27th March 2013

12 vivid golfers participated in the 1st Quarterly Golf Medal, which was held at Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia on a Wednesday morning, 27th March 2013. Despite the vast water hazards and distant blue tee positions, Raintree Club golfers managed to accomplish all the 18-holes safely.

The winners were Jacqueline Cheong at 33 points, followed by Alan Loke at 32 points and Ainuddin Hamid came in 3rd with 30 points.
