FOOTBALL NEWS

Seniors

After defeating Mt Evelyn the previous week at home by a margin of 12 goals, the interleague break was not kind to the Brookers as they delivered a lack lustre performance against Wandin on the weekend. Trailing the entire game the Brookers could not match their faster paced opponents on the small ground failing to be first to the contest and defending from behind which proved to be fatal as the Bulldogs received free kicks in front of goal.

Inaccuracy in front of goal cost the Brookers dearly kicking 16 points.

The Bulldogs had recruited well over the summer and this was very evident as they strung together some great passages of play, kicking goals from tight angles and great distances.

The loss now places the Brookers in 4th

place on the ladder back in the pack looking to find form against Olinda-Ferny Creek this week.

Goal Kickers: S. Williams 3, A. Campbell 2, D. Cracknell , R. Clark , C. Clarke , A. SHIPP

Best Players: R. Clark, T. Whytcross, S. Williams, C. Clarke, N. Muratore, S. Richardson

Reserves

The Reserves now sit in 5th

position after last weekend’s loss to the Bulldogs by 7 points. It was a close game all the way through to the final siren.

The side welcomed Alex Schuddekopf playing his first game after injuring himself during pre-season, other inclusions Steve Nuutinen and Sam Martin gave the team some senior experience.

The boys were hard and tough around the contests but just couldn’t seem to get their noses in front, trailing by a mere point at three quarter time; the Brookers gave it everything they had. A few positional changes in the latter half of the quarter pinching the much needed goals only to be outdone by the Bulldogs in the dying minutes of match.

A great performance by Eamon Tomlin who kicked two goals and solid performances from Brett Pye,Grainger Hartridge, Steve Nuutinen, Sam Martin and Alex Moore.

Goal Kickers: E. Tomlin 2, B. Pye , E. Hams , L. Loveday , D. Wilkie , S. Nuutinen , M. Chadwick

18’s

The 18’s in recent weeks have had great support from the juniors supplying a number of players up on permit. The team has a core group of 17 players who dedicate themselves each week to play the game of footy. The results have not been great on the scoreboard but as the team develops we hope to have some wins on the board.

Last weekend against Wandin the team had a great challenge as numbers were down facing an opposition with an abundance of players warming their bench. Not to be disgraced the team played to the best of their ability.

The Brookers kept in touch with their opponents for the first half but an 8 goal quarter in the third by Wandin was the game sealer for the home side.

An amazing performance by Andrew Moore who kicked 4 of the Brookers 6 goals.

NETBALL

The Brookers continue to battle against the odds as all grades have struggled to win games over the past few rounds. To date C grade have two victories under their skirts and the higher grades are yet to taste the sweetness of a game won. This weekend could be the one and all grades have good chances to be on the winning side. Last weekend, the girls benefited from playing a top side the final score was not of interest to the coach but how the girls progressed each quarter and how they had improved over recent weeks with team structure and skills. The A Grade team had improved on their mid court structure, not giving away as many turnovers to their opponents and the C team practiced their court balance which also has come a long way since round 1. Despite the losses the teams all came out with positive thoughts and looked

forward to the next round.

There were some great individual performances and highlights from Brittany Lang (A Grade), Rachel Bartels (B Grade) and Alish Quinless (C Grade). These 3 players receive movie pass awards this week for their efforts courtesy of our Sponsor Gembrook Village Estate. This season the girls have rallied we have a few sponsors supporting our netball team through our training singlets. We welcome Harcourts Tecoma, Platinum Building Solutions and Gembrook Village and thank them for their support this season.

JUNIOR NETBALL

Our junior netballers have been doing great over the last few weeks playing at the Cockatoo Courts in all sorts of weather. Netta have improved their skills and now have a basic understanding of the game as some of the girls fill in for our Under 11 teams. The Under 11A and 13A teams remain undefeated in their divisions. The Under 13 team having two close calls in recent weeks only winning their matches against Maccelsfield and Cockatoo by a goal. Both grades have seen great improvements by its players, especially in the Under 11’s. We did not realize we had so many goal shooters in the team. Everyone has had an opportunity to play this position and all have scored at least a few goals which have been great. The club has also seen a maturity in our Under 13 players who are encouraging to each other on court even when the scores are tight and mistakes are made under pressure. We will see some great players come up to the senior club next year. This link is vital to our survival by bringing up those juniors who want

to play senior netball. Many of our senior players also play in the Sherbrooke competition or have previously played in that competition. Juniors train on Tuesdays for Under 13’s and under 11A and the remainder of teams train on Thursday nights at the local primary school. Any enquires can be made to Caz Goodie on 0400 541 364.

WOMEN’S BROOKERS

The Brookettes are still to see victory this season but it is not far off as the skills improve every week and the scores are closer. A definite turning point after round 5 against Chirnside Park where the coach nearly lost what was left of his hair from the frustration. A new tact and training took on its own fury as the tackle bags came out and the coach bought the physical bumps and shepherds to the training track. The girls took it on the chest and learnt the art of being physical around the ball, so much so that comments heard from opposition teams were now calling us rough and intimidating. It has all been good fun and last week the coach decided it was time he took part in the drills himself. This worked well until in a contest with centre half forward Hailey Clarke he

came off second best. We are now running a competition at training to see if anyone else can beat Coach Goodie. It has been a lot of fun! The girls are slowly improving restricting flag favorites Cranbourne to 2 goals 6 in the second half of the match in Round 7 and a tight fought battle last round against St John’s after being smashed by the same side in Round 3. A couple of great goals from forward Sarah Clark and a couple of near misses from new recruit Tracey Gartlan whom also plays A Grade netball for the Brookers. In her debut game Tracey laid on 2 great tackles one after the other which sent shockwaves through the opposition, a force to be reckoned. The results over the last few rounds: Round 3 Gembrook Cockatoo 1.0.06 lost to St John’s 18.14.122 Round 4 Gembrook Cockatoo 2.1.13 lost to Chirnside Park 7.14.56 Round 5 Gembrook Cockatoo 0.0.00 lost to Hallam 12.27.99 Round 6 Gembrook Cockatoo 1.7.13 lost to Keysborough 6.9.45 Round 7 Gembrook Cockatoo 0.1.01 lost to Cranbourne 10.11.71 Round 8 Gembrook Cockatoo 2.4.16 lost to St John’s 5.13.43

Each Round the clubs nominate one player as part of the Melbourne FC Rising Star Award. Our club has been lucky enough to receive two of these awards. Players Katie Morris (Ruckman) and Chloe Verhees (onballer) have both been honored with this award. The Brookers are still seeking players to join our team as numbers can fluctuate from week to week. Training is on Wednesday nights at 6-30pm up at the Gembrook oval. Players must turn 16 in the season to be eligible to play. Anyone interested in playing can contact Caz Goodie on 0400 541 364 or Chloe Verhees on 0401 393 727

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

1986 Premiership Reunion On our first home game the club celebrated the 50 year reunion of the 1986 Premiership side. A great day as many past players of the club came together to celebrate the event. This team were successful in defeating Woori Yallock all those years ago achieving the clubs 3

rd Senior Premiership Flag. It was also noted that club

legend Matt O’Neil had achieved his 350th

game milestone. Matt who never likes to make a fuss did not want any fan fare on the day, all he wished for was his team to beat last years premiers and this was done in fine form.

Interleague Success

Several players from our club represented the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball league a couple of weeks back. The League successful in defeating the Wimmera League in all grades of competition. In the seniors AJ Walker, Rick Causer, Nathan Muratore and Shane Williams represented the club, AJ Walker being named Vice Captain. In a tight match the YVMDFNL won the match by 1 goal which now places them 12

th in the Victorian Country Football League Rankings,

giving them a shot at breaking into the top ten next season.

Our club was also represented in the Under 18’s by Nick Hendrix and Dave McPherson. The 18’s winning by a great margin over the Wimmera.

The club would like to congratulate these players on representing the Brookers. A great effort and achievement.
