#ne day suddenly a group of monkeys while roaming ame to that plae. #ne of those arpenters had put a

wedge in middle of a half-ut ar(una tree log. The monkeys started playing with the trees and logs as they

    wished.

#ne of those monkeys whose death was near, sat on that half-ut log and started removing the wedge from

that. As the wedge moved out, the monkey's hanging genitals went into the gaps of the log, got trapped and

    the monkey got killed.

After some days, eause of lak of rain, the lake slowly started to dry up. The tortoise was very sad and

worried. Seeing him the swans said "+riend This lake has dried up. )ow only swampy mud remains.

%ithout water how shall we live This thought is worrying us."

#n hearing the swans, the tortoise said - ")ow, due to the lak of water, my survival is not possile. 1et,

"*n ad times, one should not aandon patiene.*t is 2uite possile that with patiene one an

"1ou an get a strong rope or a small piee of stik. Searh another lake that has plenty of water. * will

hold the middle of rope or stik with my teeth, and you an hold the two ends and fly, taking me to the

    other lake."

The swans heard what Kamugreeva had to say. They said, "+riend we will do as you have said. &ut, in

this situation you will have to e silent. *f you are not silent you will fall from the stik."

After making the neessary arrangements, the swans were flying and Kamugreeva ould see the town

"!aving eaten fish -- large, small and medium si$ed,the greedy stork died y the ite of a ra."

    5/16

*n a forest there was a lake in whih lived many marine reatures. #ne of its residents was an old stork

who was no longer apale of killing fish. !ene, one day, oppressed y hunger he sat on the ank of the

lake opiously shedding tears enough to irrigate the land. A ra alongwith some marine animals were pained to see the weeping stork. The ra asked him -- "My dear, you have not made any arrangement for

your meal today, you have only een shedding tears and sitting 2uietly, what is the matter

!e said, " Son, you have (udged orretly. After eating all these fish * am atoning my sins, renouning theworld and shall give up my life. * am not eating even the fish that are near me."

#n hearing this, the ra asked, "My dear, why are you renouning the world"

Said the stork, "Son * was orn in this lake and have grown old here. * have heard that soon the twelve-

year long famine will take plae."

The ra asked, "+rom whom have you heard this"

The stork replied, "+rom some soothsayers. Saturn will enter the onstellation ontaining of ohini and

will e in on(untion with Mars and /enus. The Sage /arahamihiraharya had said --

*f Saturn enters the art-like onstellation

ontaining ohini, then for twelve years *ndra

will stop the rain on earth.

    Thus --

    %hen ohini's onstellation is e6posed, the earth

will feel guilty of ommitting the sin. !ene,to atone the sin, the earth will redue itself to

ash and one during the drought.

And also, --*f any of these, Saturn, Mars or Moon are ale to

enter the art-like onstellation ontaining ohinithen a veritale oean of disaster will destroy

the entire universe. *f the Moon enters theonstellation then the people will eome totally

helpless and in someplaes even eat their own young

ones. *n someplaes the strong rays of the sun

will render the water unfit for drinking."

As it is this lake has very little water, and if there is a drought it will dry up shortly. %hen this lake, where

    * have spent my hildhood and now reahed old age, dries up then all the marine life will end due to lak of

water. * annot ear to see their destrution. Therefore, today, * have deided to fast unto death. At this point in time all small marine life from small lakes are eing transported y the larger marine animals to

igger lakes. The igger marine animals like roodiles, ig li$ards and so on are themselves moving to

deeper lakes. &ut, look, the residents of this lake are doing nothing and moving around without a worry. This is the main ause of my tears5 that no one in this lake shall survive.

The ra listened to the stork, understood the seriousness and shared it with all the other residents of the

lake. #n hearing the news of the impending drought all the fish, the tortoises et., got sared and went to

the stork and asked, "*s there any way y whih the lives of the residents of the lake an e saved"

Said the stork, ")ear this lake there is another very deep lake. #wing to the aundane of lotus flowers it

annot dry up even after twenty-four years of drought. *f any one of you an lim on my ak, then * antake him to that lake."

  • 8/17/2019 The King's Monkey Servant (10479825)

    6/16

All the marine animals of the lake elieved the stork. Addressing him as "+ather, Maternal 7nle and

&rother, they gathered round the stork and pleaded with him, "Take me there, first"

%ith deep malie in him the stork would arry the little animals and drop them at a rok near y and after

eating them at leisure, return to the lake and tell them onoted stories. This eame his way of life.

#ne day the ra told the stork, "3ear, your first onversation was with me. Then why are you takingalong all others to the new lake ut not me. 8lease, sir, protet me."

%hen the stork heard the ra, he thought that, yes, eating fish daily has eome so oring, instead * will

eat the ra today. !aving deided thus he took the ra on his ak and flew towards the rok. The rasaw that at a distane there was a rok with ones piled up like a hill and immediately understood that they

were fish-ones. !e said to the stork, "3ear, how far is the lake, yet * feel that you are now tired of my

    weight."

#n hearing this, the stork thought that the foolish ra is not powerful on land 9than in water: and laughed

okily, "4ra where is the other lake This is now my livelihood. )ow you an rememer your dear ;od
