English Language Profiles

Step 2

King’s English Assessment Profile - Speaking Competency - Temata Lomu

Fluency and topic relevance:- Score:- 4.5

Temata frequently tries to use the language to communicate more than just her everyday needs. She can express her-

self, despite hesitations, on a range of familiar topics and can use basic language well in her own area of expertise. She

often uses simple linking devices to connect her ideas and can initiate familiar everyday interactions with a degree of

confidence. During a group conversation, and with some assistance, she can usually give and request some information

about the topic being discussed, but may need a lot of help to clarify her meaning due to first language interference. At

some point soon, she would benefit from spending some time in a fluency-based speaking class.

Vocabulary:- Score:- 5.5

Temata has sufficient language to communicate in most routine situations. She has enough vocabulary to give a simple

description of experiences and events, plans and instructions, although will probably need the listener to supply a few

unrecalled or unknown words in order to complete her meaning. She also may attempt to express various thoughts,

feelings and opinions and may convey a lot of meaning with help.

Grammatical range and accuracy:- Score:- 5.5

Temata has hit a 'plateau' at this level as she discovers more of the complexities of language at the middle-higher

levels. Meaning is quite often not clear due to new contexts and to inter-language, where she borrows patterns from

her own language or overgeneralises new patterns learnt in English. It will take some patience, a lot of hard work and

some changes in her approach to study before she will 'see' more progress. It is important that she spends more time

"socialising" with native speakers (to hear how grammar structures are used in real life) and less time studying her text

books to make further progress: in this way, language learning is different to other types of study. She will need the

continued assistance of trained or active listeners to correct mistakes made with complex structures and to explain

teachable points of language as they occur.

Pronunciation:- Score:- 7.0

Temata's pronunciation is usually clear. When meeting a person who is not used to her accent, she might occasionally

need to repeat long words or less common sounds to clarify meaning. She generally corrects all of her own minor mis-

pronunciations as she speaks, but she will sometimes need the listener to correct her pronunciation of newly occurring

and multi-syllabic words. Her pronunciation is more than sufficient for some work-related employment or for some study

purposes in a native-speaking environment.
