Welcome to K-T!

Hello Kentucky-Tennessee District! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Katie Stuart, and I am your 2012-2013 K-T District Governor, a position I am honored to hold. I

hope you're enjoying the Key Club year so far as much as I am.

As a member of Key Club International, you're not only part of the world's largest student-led organization of over 262,000 members, but you are also apart of something much bigger: a vision. Our vision, to create caring, competent servant leaders through service, is the very foundation of our organization and something we have been building upon since 1925 when the very first Key Club was created. Our organization is so much more than just a school club and is not only at such a large scale; before we can head out and change the world, we must first improve our own little corner of the world by serving our home, schools, and communities. Participate in a fundraiser with your local Kiwanis club, help out at a soup kitchen in your area, or at a Ronald McDonald House near you! Helping others is the goal, no matter where they may be.

While we are mainly a service organization, that doesn't mean we don't know how to have a little fun! Attend International Convention during summer break, enjoy a great day at Dollywood in October at Fall Rally, or celebrate our year of service at District Convention in March! We have dances, walk-a-thons, carnivals, and nearly any other event you can think of. The possibilities are endless!

The Membership Development Committee has been hard at work preparing thia handbook, and I encourage you to make use of all the resources they have compiled. If you ever need an idea for a service project or fundraiser, need to get in contact with a member of the District Board, or want to learn more about Key Club itself, this is the place to go! Thank you for all the hard work you've accomplished thus far, and I hope you keep up the good work! If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to ask!

Yours in service,Katie StuartDistrict GovernorKentucky-Tennessee District

SERVICE PARTNERS

Childern’s Miracle Network- Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises funds and awareness for hospitals that need equipment for hospitalized kids. The CMN saves more than 14 million kids from birth defects, cancer, life threatening injuries, and other ailments.

Ways you can help local children’s hospitals:

-Stalling for Spare Change- For every 50 cents, class is stalled for 1 second.

-Music Lessons for Miracles- Kids teach other student how to play an instrument in exchange for a donation to the hospital.

-There are other ways to help, just be creative. (:

March of Dimes- The mission of March Of Dimes is to increase the health of babies and to help prevent birth defects, infant mortality, and premature birth. Our 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, is the founder of the March of Dimes. March of Dimes has been very successful in improving the health of babies with their enthusiasm and volunteer help. Since 1978, Key Club has been raising money for the March of Dimes. You can help also by just raising money for it in your own school. Each season has it’s own fundraiser so that everything is just not the same. Also, have fun while doing this!

UNICEF- UNICEF is an organization that helps kids with themselves, healthcare, basic education, and safe water. It has helped over 150 countries. Key Club helps by trick-or-treating for UNICEF. This has been happening since 1994. Over the years key club has raised over 5 million dollars for iodine deficiency and other things. This year all money raised through trick-or-treat for UNICEF will go to the Eliminate Project.

What the RMH Does- The RMH provides families of hospitalized kids with a place to stay that is affordable and near the hospital, that way families can be near their children's and can be focused on them. At every RMH, families enjoy home cooked meals, private sleeping areas, a playroom, and quiet places to think and heal. All families can now focus on their children’s health, rather than wondering what is going on.

Vision- RMH believes that when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community, and even the whole world. They strive to be part of that change and part of the solution in improving the lives of children and their families by providing programs that strengthen families during their most difficult times. They have 36 years of experience and strong relationships with local communities, and people who establish chapters across the world. They can’t do it alone though. They rely on chapters to carry out their part.

Mission- The mission of RMH is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children. The core values of the RMH are:

1. Focusing on the critical needs of children.

2. Celebrating the diversity of the programs we offer and the staff, volunteers and donors who make them possible.

3. Staying true to our heritage of 36 years of responsible stewardship.

4. Operation with accountability and transparency.

History- In 1974 the first RMH was opened in Philadelphia due to a guy named Fred Hill’s daughter who had leukemia at 3 years old. Fred and his wife did everything they could to stay near their child, like sleeping on benches and other countless things. Other families did this too. Thus, the RMH came in and was possible from the donations from Shamrock Shakes.

Volunteer- Volunteers for the RMH helped by cooking, hosting, listening, nurturing, and by simply being there and helping. This made a difference in the lives that lived in the RMH. A good way to volunteer is by going to a RMH near you and do anything to help them out. I am sure that they would appreciate it.

History of Key Club:

Key club was founded in Sacramento, California, in 1925 where 11charter members officially met for the first Key Club meeting. Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent were two Kiwanis members and school administrators who had an idea to start an organization to provide guidance to young men. As Key Club grew new ideas and activities were formed and Key club became a service organization. As other Kiwanis groups contacted the Sacramento Kiwanis Club and Key Club other Kiwanis groups sponsored similar organizations in their own communities. Through fifteen years of the expansion of Key Club took place fifty clubs were active in California, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington. In 1943, representatives voted to form an International Association of Key Clubs and elected Malcolm Lewis as the first Key Club International President. Females were officially allowed to join Key Club in 1943 influencing the Kiwanis to allow females to join in 1987.

The Structure of Key Club:

The Facts of Key Club: Key Club International is the largest and oldest service organization for high school students. ICON & DCON

ICON stands for International Convention. It’s the International level of Key Club where any member from the United States who may want to attend is eligible. It allows everyone to get together and show just how big Key Club really is. It happens every year sometime in July, and it usually last for about a week. It is always a blast! The reason why we have the convention is as follows:

• Elect the international officers

• Review accomplishments of the past year

• Set policies for the up-coming year

In addition, new programs are announced and all kinds of different speakers participate. However, it’s not all about working and serving though because we have dances, pin trading, etc…

It is highly recommended that EVERYONE try to go!

DCON stands for District Convention. It’s for any member of their district who may want to attend. It usually occurs every spring and usually last for about two days. The place may vary from anywhere in their district. At DCON Key Club members:

• Elect new student leaders

• Learn new service projects

• Meet other Key Club members

• Attend interesting workshops to help prepare for the year

It is always a lot of fun and a great learning experience; thus, everyone should try to attend!
