What Is Kiwanis? The Purpose of KiwanisTo give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than the material, values of life.

To encourage living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.

Our Motto: “We Build!”

Our Mission: Service to Youth and the Elderly, to Community and Nation.

The Name: The name “Kiwanis” stems from an Indian phrase which, roughly translated, means “to express one’s self.”

What It Means to Be A Kiwanian: Through Kiwanis membership you can give of yourself, your experience, knowledge, time, and love - to those who need them most. You can work for a way of life in which you believe. You can form friendships on a first-name basis with fellow citizens you otherwise might never have met.

Who Can Join? Men or women over 18 years old who are of good standing in the community - invited by a Kiwanis member. The cost is low, especially when you consider the tremendous satisfaction Kiwanis membership provides.

History: Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, January 21, 1915. It extended into Canada in 1916 and worldwide expansion was approved in 1962.

Facts: Today, Kiwanis numbers about 600,000 members in 94 countries and about 8,500 commu-nities. Kiwanis serves in countries around the world and the basic principles are the same everywhere. Kiwanis sponsors four organizations for young men and women: K-Kids in elementary schools, Builder’s Clubs in junior high schools, Key Clubs in high schools and Circle K clubs in colleges.
