A big game hunter went on a safari with his wife and mother-in-law.

One morning, while still deep in the jungle, the hunter's wife awakened to find her mother gone.

She woke her husband, and they both set off in search of the old woman. In a clearing not far from the camp, they came upon a chilling sight. The mother-in-law was standing face to face with a ferocious lion.

What are we going to do?" his horrified wife asked.

"Nothing," her husband replied, "The lion got himself into this mess, let him get himself out of it."Mrs Munyard

A few days ago I was listening to one of the more popular songs in our modern society. As I sung along to the lyrics I heard myself saying things I wouldn’t normally say and things which do not coincide with my beliefs. At that moment I considered various songs I have listened to over my short lifetime: anything from Hi-5 to Spice Girls to Pitbull. I then thought of the very real possibility that as I listened to this music and learnt new lyrics I was opening myself up to new ideas. Although I am a strong believer in keeping an open mind, is it really a positive factor to consciously listen to music that is perhaps subconsciously shaping your identity in a negative way.

I am in no way saying all music affects us negatively, of course listening to music that is uplifting and associated with your beliefs and values is good for your mind, body and soul. It’s when that music makes you feel angry or hurt or is connected to a life of drugs and alcohol that you should be concerned. When does the music we listen to stop being just sound and start being something more? What a scary thought if your favourite song is “Hangover” by Flo Rida ft. Taio Cruz; there’s hope if it’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bob Marley. So ask yourself: “Do I really know the lyrics of the music I listen to? Do I know the motivation behind why the song was written?” Don't let ignorance be your best friend.
