    *Definition of Air Pollution

Introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological

materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other

living organisms, or cause damage to the natural

environment or built environment. Indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of

the world's worst pollution problems in the 2008 Blacksmith

Institute World's Worst Polluted Places report.

Pollutants that are pumped into our atmosphere and directlypollute the air are called primary pollutants.

If primary pollutants undergo chemical reactions, the

resulting compounds are called secondary pollutants.

    Example :Photochemical

    *Examples of Pollutants

    and Their Sources

    Carbon Monoxide:-Motor vehicle exhaust, indoor

sources include kerosene or wood burning stoves.

Sulfur Dioxide:-Coal-fired power plants, petroleumrefineries, manufacture of sulphuric acid and

    smelting of ores containing sulphur.

    Nitrogen Dioxide:-Motor vehicles, electric utilities,

and other industrial, commercial, and residential

    sources that burn fuels.

    *The Effects of Air Pollution

Haze:-caused by the open burning of forests. Haze is caused when

sunlight encounters tiny pollution particles in the air. Haze

obscures the clarity, colour, texture, and form of what we see.

Acid-Rain:-these acids are formed primarily by nitrogen and sulphuroxides released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned.

These acids fall to the Earth either as wet precipitation (rain,

snow, or fog) or dry precipitation (gas and particulates). Some are

carried by the wind. Acid rain damages trees ,causes soils and

water bodies to acidify, making the water unsuitable for some fishand other wildlife. It also speeds the decay of buildings.

Strokes:- due to thickening of the blood which does not respond to

    blood thinners.

Do not allow open burning in residential

    areas.

Advise farmers to reduce the use of

    pesticides.

Ban nuclear tests through aninternational agreement.

    *CONTROL.

Fix catalytic converters to the exhaust pipes

of motor vehicles so that harmful exhaustgases can be converted to harmless

    substances.

Use unleaded petrol in motor vehicles.

The chimneys of factories must be tall in

size so that the emissions must be released

    higher up in the environment.

    *Ways to Keep Air Clean

*Join a carpool or vanpool to get to work or school.

*Conserve energy - turn off appliances and lights

    when you leave the room.

*Buy rechargeable batteries for devices used

    frequently.
