PRADEEMP KUMAR DEBATA’S TAKE ON GRAMMAR-Author of the article “The Importance of Good Grammar” in

Language in India draws attention to the existence of grammar in our society.

What does the word “grammar” mean,

anyways?

Grammar exists in several different contexts- whether that refers to an ordinary person or a school student attempting to examine the correctness of a language for analytical and terminological purposes.

Displaying a cognitive understanding of how to execute good grammar can potentially improve written work.

THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION CONSISTS OF FOUR BASIC SKILLS:• Listening

• Speaking

• Reading

• WritingAll strategies are implemented into classrooms. Students are expected to master these skills to better themselves .

But, are we ever explicitly taught how to use proper grammar or are we just expected to pick up on it?

Perhaps we learn at some point in age… other cultures may not receive this opportunity upon overcoming a language barrier, however!

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES LEARN GOOD GRAMMAR

PRACTICES?

- Good grammar helps us speak clearly and effectively.- We would not have to repeat ourselves excessively

or explain something more thoroughly than necessary.

- It is a means of communicating with others as efficiently as possible.

SO, WHAT’S THE CATCH?

- The English language can be tricky!- English differs from other languages in several

ways. - Example: English does not derive from Latin roots,

dissimilar to languages such as Spanish, Italian, or French.

- That being said, there are different rules that are applicable to the English language.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT ENGLISH?

-English has very few inflections.

-The language has been simplified and made easier. However, sometimes this makes it harder to comprehend for a student who is searching for a specific tense for conversion purposes.

-English has less consistencies than a language like French.

-In turn, it has more idioms and irregularities. Idioms are phrases that combines words to display a different meaning than the definitions of each individual term.

-There are less rules and regularities within the English language.

-So, because it is not as strict, that means that it is also not as structured. There is no rule book. New words often appear within the language. New constructions are applicable to certain terms.

“GRAMMAR CHALLENGES, BUT IT BENEFITS.”-Debata claims that there are advantages to

learning good grammar the right way.

These benefits include:• Teaching concepts on subject, verb, cause,

phrases, translation method, bilingual method, and structural approach.
