THE IMPACT OF YOUR GENEROSITY SHINES IN 2017: GRANT REPORTS

In 2017, the Safe Crossings Foundation (SCF) Board of Directors made grants to Providence Hospice of Seattle’s Safe Crossings Program and Camp Erin®-King County, as well as to Forefront Cares and The Healing Center, to serve unmet needs in the greater Puget Sound region, all at no cost to families.

The Safe Crossings

Program provides children with opportunities to process their grief. The program is staffed by master’s degree-level social workers highly experienced in supporting children and families. Funding from SCF provided continuing support for their services to families, which include a variety of approaches such as individual counseling, crisis response for schools, and weekend summer bereavement camp for kids.

The Healing Center is a Seattle-based grief support

community for adults, children, and families. During 2017, they served 70 children between the ages of 3 and

18, a 40% increase in the number of children served from 2016. A grant from SCF supported the Healing Center to meet with representatives from 20 organizations across the Puget Sound area to explore how they can better advance social and racial equity within grief work.

Forefront Cares, a program developed by the University

of Washington’s School of Social Work, provides emotional support for individuals and families impacted by suicide. Funding from SCF was used to provide “Care Packages” of items that can bring comfort to survivors, as well as kid-friendly books and lists of local resources. The program also offers phone support for survivors by

“mentors,” including helping grieving parents learn strategies for supporting their grieving child or teen.

At a recent mentor meeting, one mentor put it this way:

“Mentors are a reservoir of caring and patience and

understanding. Our goal is to listen not talk; to coach, not

direct; to care, not judge. It is an honor to be a mentor and

community organizer.” – Wayne Lynch

WHERE YOUR DONATIONS GO

We at SCF know how important it is for donors to understand just where their donations are going. Here is a sample of what your gifts do within our community:

SAFE CROSSINGS PROGRAM BILINGUAL SUPPORT IN SCHOOLSSafe Crossings Program (SCP) was invited to host a grief support group at a Seattle-area elementary school for Spanish-speaking refugee children who has each lost a parent due to various circumstances in their home countries. SCP partnered with the school’s on-site Spanish interpreter and counselor, a woman the kids already knew and trusted. The children shared stories, learned about grief, and reflected on

their individual experiences through a communal lens of loss. One particularly meaningful activity was when each person drew what “grief looked like” for them, which sparked a rich discussion in which the children shared their drawings and opened up about their grief journeys. The interpreter also shared her own story of loss, building even stronger respect, trust and true connection with the children.

Thanks to your generosity, SCF is proud to be able to continue long-term funding for Providence Hospice of Seattle’s Safe Crossings

Program and Camp Erin®-King County. In addition, the grants awarded

in 2018 support the following five organizations and services:

Art with Heart is creating an online, interactive version of their Draw It Out training and curricula, which will enable many

more youth-serving professionals to easily access the tools they need to run powerful, healing grief support programs.

Forefront Cares will continue

providing emotional support for families following a suicide death.

The Healing Center will continue providing grief support

groups for children and families.

The Journey Program of Seattle Children’s Hospital will

develop their second outreach offering to marginalized communities. In their first adaptation of grief workshops and events, facilitated by an experienced Spanish-speaking clinical social worker, the participating children were able to tell their grief stories in Spanish, enabling them to better focus on their feelings rather than how to translate those feelings into English. For the upcoming second adaptation, the team will collaborate with the patient navigator program through Seattle Children’s Center for Diversity and Health Equity.

Wild Grief will provide programs to guide grieving teens on wilderness hikes because they know that, for many, the wilderness

heals. In the wild, teens get to sleep under the stars, rely on the earth, and remember their place as part of a greater world and humanity. Wild Grief believes that giving teens a chance to explore their grief with a group of peers in the wilderness offers each of them unique support while on their individual journeys. Wild Grief will also continue grief-focused day hikes and guest presentations at various events in the Puget Sound region.

While many adults might assume that preschool-aged children are unable to process grief and that revisiting this grief when the child is older would be too difficult, Jill, a Safe Crossings Program counselor, shared the story of two very young children who benefited from doing just that.

One of the children’s twin sibling died when they were 2 years old. The surviving twin, along with a very close friend of both twins, processed their grief together at visits with Jill immediately following the death and then again recently, a couple of years later. Knowing how much little ones like to do art projects, Jill decided she would invite them to create a love lantern together.

Jill explained to the children that the lantern could be their connection to their lost sibling and friend. She told them that if they talked to the lantern, it could hold whatever they said. While one wasn’t interested in speaking much, the other was eager to share their thoughts. Through the lantern, the child “told” their friend how sad and angry they were over the death. The sibling wanted help from the friend

deciding where to hang this lantern, but not without first adding rocks to the lantern in honor of the lost twin, who happened to love rocks. The children found a spot where the light filtered through the lantern, creating a lovely pattern on the ceiling. As Jill watched them in this moment, she noticed them both using terminology that she had used during her sessions with them years prior. She listened to them incorporate this previous learning into the new love lantern project.

Both of these children will be able to receive grief support all through their childhood years thanks to you, our generous donors. Because of your donations, they will be able to continue to process their feelings and learn new ways to cope as they mature emotionally and cognitively.

“Thank you so much for your willingness to make meaningful connections with our children when they are in such difficult

places – You are able to help them sort out what the parents cannot.”

– Camp Erin®-King County Parent

“I made great friends and I got to do fun stuff with my Big Buddies and the food was great and I got to express my feelings…”

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

In early March, SCF hosted the 4th Annual Northwest Conference on Childhood Grief, which focused on Connecting Children to Support: Addressing Barriers to Services. It was a tremendous day of deep learning and connection as a grief support community.

The symposium began with renowned childhood grief scholars Keith Carter, MSW, LCSW, and Tyran Hill, MSSA, who explored various barriers children face, especially children of color, in getting the support they need to process their feelings after loss. Each session that followed offered another layer to the solid foundation set at the beginning of the day. Attendees

reported feeling more knowledgeable and having gained the ability to implement some new best practices for supporting as many children as possible from all walks of life.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors: ColdStream, Kaiser Permanente, LabCorp, Nintendo, PINN, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Stoneway Concrete, and Rod and Nancy Hochman!
