November Birthdays

Happy Hallo-Jeans Day! Human Resources

For $5.00, employees can Treat with no Tricks for the Children’s Center on Halloween by wearing a favorite scary t-shirt with a pair of jeans! The Children’s Center of Nevada is close to meeting a fund match with the Moss Foundation…so with a little help from the campus community, let’s all pitch in and make the match happen! The Children’s Center is a not-for-profit child advocacy center that provides a child-friendly setting for the investigation and treatment of child abuse. Also, please welcome children to trick or treat in your offices after 3:00 on Halloween! Bring Linda Lee (Main Hall) a $5.00 check for the Children’s Center of Nevada.

Flu Shots

It’s that time again---preparing for the flu season. BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City will pay for the flu vaccination if you are a Cottey employee (and/or dependents) who is covered by the Cottey Health Plan. The flu vaccination is free from in-network providers. You must call your health care provider and make an appointment in order to receive the vaccination.

Now Hiring

The Office of Human Resources is currently advertising for a maintenance technician due to the resignation of Jake Banwart.

Reminder

Don’t forget to return your United Way enrollment/contribution forms to Betsy McReynolds in Main Hall. It’s a great way to give back to our local community in the form of tax-free payroll deduction.

Academic AffairsFaculty News

Prof. Jo Byrnes, associate professor of dance, attended the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) annual meeting in Seattle, Washington, October 17-20. She participated in sessions and gained valuable information for teaching dance with safe anatomical, kinesiological, and psychological practices.

Prof. Theresa Burger, professor of physical education, bicycled 66 miles through the states of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma with the Route 66 Bicycle Tour on Saturday, October 12.

Prof. Karen Polon, professor of physical education, attended an Obesity Course during the Annual Obesity and Associated Conditions Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona, from October 10-13. Karen will present new information learned at the course during a future Employee Wellness Roundtable.

Dr. Sylvio Mannel, associate professor of environmental studies, and Judi Steege, director of admission, traveled to the School of Environmental Studies in Apple Valley, Minnesota, on October 8. They presented Cottey’s Environmental BA program and toured the school. The School of Environmental Studies teaches 11th and 12th grade with a focus on environmental studies. Much like Cottey’s BA program, the school maintains strong partnerships inside and outside the school with many organizations, such as the Minnesota Zoo, Dakota County Parks, etc. The school is also interdisciplinary and draws from the environmental sciences, geography, history and studio art, just to name a few. They also focus on experiential learning with real professional tools and partners. One student said that a main issue is that “others see the fun, but not the work.” She continued to say, “…and yes, we do have ‘fun’, but also have to work very hard, e.g., measurements, analysis, reports.”

One unique aspect of their program: the care of animals (even in the classroom), such as this snake!

Psychology Department Career Panel

The Psychology Department hosted a special panel on careers and psychology on October 17. Four members of the Nevada community participated in the panel, and spoke about their career paths and how they used psychology in their their everyday lives. Approximately 15 students attended to learn more about careers in case management, therapy, marketing, and human resources. Students also had an opportunity to learn more about these careers and ask questions in breakout sessions with each of the speakers. Thanks to all of the students who came, and to our panel participants!

Spiritual Life & DiversityIntervarsity Retreat

Students involved in the campus Intervarsity group enjoyed a retreat to Augusta, Kansas, this past weekend. They had a wonderful time growing deeper in their faith and enjoying fellowship with other spiritual sisters and students from across the state! They enjoyed worshiping, having a bonfire, small group discussions, and having Inductive Bible Studies. They got fed mentally and spiritually as well as receiving more wisdom in the meaning of some scriptures they studied. The girls expressed their love for God and understanding the root of what God says in the scriptures and connecting the meanings in depth from the past and the present.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Led by our Hispanic students, a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month was held on Wednesday, October 16. Students enjoyed sharing the Hispanic cultural activities as well as breaking the piñatas made from the resources provided. The Hispanic students spent several hours the previous week making piñata shells that were used to staff their cultural candy for the celebration.

Food is always known as a bonding factor in most gatherings, and various Mexican and Hispanic candy brands were a great connection and experience for most participants. It was a wonderful, memorable event for our community.

Happiness Challenge Food Drive

On October 8, the Spiritual Life and Diversity Office collected all the food items donated toward the Happiness Challenge Food Drive and delivered them to our local Nevada food pantry. Students Malyssa Dunson, Kelley Copley and Amanda Miller assisted in the delivery of over 150 canned food and boxed food items.

We are very grateful to our Cottey community for their generous philanthropic spirit. It is a blessing to have such a loving and caring community.

Wednesday Prayer Services

Every Wednesday we have a lunchtime prayer. Join us at 12:45 p.m. in the Chapel to pray for the community. Everyone is welcome to join the prayer group just for a short time on their way to classes and work.

The Chapel is always open to everyone. People are invited to go in and meditate or just to find a quiet place to sit and relax while renewing themselves. It is open during the day from morning till evening.

Thank You!The Office of Enrollment Management would like to thank everyone for helping with a very successful “C” for Yourself! Weekend. Special thanks to the Golden Keys, Physical Plant, Bookstore, Faculty, and Food Service. Whether you presented an Academic Showcase, participated in a buzz session, met with students at the Cottey Cafe, drove a shuttle, or attended a meal, your presence made a difference. We ended up having 52 students and 47 guests attend the weekend.

Upcoming P.E.O. VisitsP.E.O. individuals and chapters visit campus every year from around the United States. Relations and the walking tours are provided by Golden Key hostesses.

Scheduled visitors for the week of October 28 include:

October 28: Chapter NG; Lee’s Summit, Missouri

Recycle,

Reduce,

Reuse! From the members of S.A.V.E., thank you to all of those in the Cottey community who have gotten more involved in

recycling on campus! We appreciate the enthusiasm!

That being said, it has come to our attention that some Nevada residents may be bringing their home recycling to Cottey. Although we appreciate their commitment to recycling, we’d like to make everyone aware of the extended hours at the Nevada Recycling Center (located at 318 N. Colorado St.) and consider taking their personal recycling there.

The hours of operation are:

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.Wednesdays: 12 noon. – 6 p.m.

First Saturday of month: 9 a.m. – Noon

If you’re unable to make it to the local recycling center during those times, perhaps consider lending S.A.V.E. a hand, any Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.!

For more information contact Elise Kimura-Tittle, S.A.V.E. sponsor, ext. 2130, or email her at [email protected]
