Dr. peter Hyland, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, Dr. melody Denny, assistant professor of English, and Dr. carol clyde, assistant professor of leadership and director of the Serenbetz Institute, attended the midwest google Summit (#MWGS) November 16-17 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. MWGS was a two-day, hands-on conference focusing on integrating Google for Education in K-12 and Higher Ed learning environments. More than 70 feature sessions were presented by Google for Education Certified Innovators and Certified Trainers, and local Googley talent. In addition to outstanding resources on how to better utilize Google's extensive technology resources for education, a number of sessions highlighted other technology resources to support both educators and individuals working to enhance productivity and effectiveness. girls leadership Retreat

Twenty-six high school sophomore, junior, and senior girls from the Women’s Foundation Girls Leadership Program attended the Exploring Leadership Retreat on campus November 20-21. The students attended a session with Dr. Clyde who led a leadership discussion that set the framework for the day. Professor Jo Byrnes led an interactive and unique session about communicating and sharing

a vision. Professor Theresa Spencer and Denise Carrick Hedges facilitated an activity using Kouzes and Posner’s popular Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders. Dr. Clyde’s students in her Foundations of Leadership class led the group team-building activities as their service learning project in their class. Golden Keys hosted the students overnight and helped to make the students feel welcome on campus.

Campus HappeningsA familiar face was back on campus before Thanksgiving break! Katherine Kerbs (Cottey ’12, William Jewell College ’14, and University of Missouri School of Law ’17 [expected]) presented a talk titled “Transgressions: The Rights of Transgender parents in Divorce cases” to Dr. Stubblefield’s WST 105: Introduction to Women’s Studies class and to Dr. Tietz’s PSY/WST 331: Psychology of Women and Gender class. She shared a powerful video in which a mother tells of her experience raising a transgender child. Then, Katherine explained key terms, outlined general custody issues, noted the specific issues related to transgender parents, presented a brief summary of relevant court cases, and considered future directions for the legal system. Her discussion was engaging and thought-provoking. Great job, Katherine! You continue to make Cottey proud!

The Serenbetz institute is very excited to announce that applications are available for Cottey’s Certificate in Organizational Leadership. Any student who has completed the prerequisite course (WLS/WST 102: Foundations in Leadership), is eligible to pursue this opportunity. If you are interested, please note that one of the required courses (WLS 490: Leadership Theory and Practice) is only taught each spring, and is currently scheduled for MWF 2:00-2:50.

We are encouraging interested students to complete the application by Thursday, December 17 in order to begin the auxiliary requirements in Spring 2016.

The certificate in organizational leadership (col) is designed to provide an opportunity for students to study the relevant theoretical and academic aspects of leadership while developing individual leadership capacity. The program combines academic coursework with experiential and co-curricular aspects that result in a tangible qualification reflected on the official transcript.

There is no area of study that is immune to the benefit of learning about, practicing and further developing leadership. In an effort to create a structure that will support the development of baccalaureate Leadership courses, it is imperative that an academic program be developed that creates this alignment. This program is intended to compliment the efforts of the LEO (Leadership, Experiences, Opportunity) program designed for associate degree students by providing a tangible outcome that mirrors the balance of academic, experiential and practical learning and development.

In order to complete the Certificate in Organizational Leadership, students must complete the following:

1. Completion of prerequisite class (WLS/WST 102: Foundations in Leadership)2. Two required courses: WLS 490: Leadership Theory and Practice (spring) PHI 205: Ethics OR PHI 210: Human Nature and Society 3. One Elective Course (choose from): WLS 315: Leadership for Social Change WLS 320: The Leader Within WLS 340: Team Leadership & Group Dynamics4. Ancillary Requirements:

1. Involvement in one (1) Leadership Immersion (travel program) and submission of a creative piece that reflects learning from the experience.2. Submission of two (2) independent reflection projects focused on personal leadership experiences that address growth/learning in relation to women’s leadership, social responsibility and global awareness.3. Development and implementation of a Leadership Development Plan (LDP) and LDP-Review form that will be used each semester the student is in the program.

Please consider applying for this exciting program. The certificate would be an outstanding addition to any area of study. You can find out more and apply at: http://www.cottey.edu/institute/certificate/

Holiday Workout Advice

Exercise is the best de-stressor at any time of year and this certainly holds true during the holidays. But don’t get yourself worked up if you can’t keep up with your regular fitness regime. Instead set some minimums. If you normally workout 4-5 days a week, shoot for 2-3. If you normally workout for an hour, squeeze in 20-30 minutes and increase your intensity or pace to compensate.
