WHAT is Assessment Day?

It is a day set aside for students to evaluate the strengths of Cottey’s academic and student life programs. Student participation on this day is vital and expected. Classes will not meet on Wednesday, April 23, and students do not report to their campus jobs between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

WHY do we have Assessment Day?

There is currently a call for more accountability in higher education. In order to maintain its accreditation, Cottey must prove students learn what our mission and learning outcomes say they will learn, and that the College is continuously working to improve programs for students. Student input is very important in this process.

Assessment Day: What You Need to Know!

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to wear blue jeans and a red or violet-colored shirt, on Assessment Day (Apri 23) as part of “Denim Day” awareness:

Denim Day’s history began in 1992 when an 18 year-old female in Italy was picked up by her driving instructor to begin a driving lesson. Soon after, she was raped on the side of the road by her instructor. She pressed charges and won her case. However, the instructor appealed and the case went to the Italian High Court. In 1999, the court overturned the conviction with a member of the High Court declaring that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the instructor could not have removed them himself; therefore, the victim must have willingly participated. Women of the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. In April 1999, the state of California established the first Denim Day in the United States.

We are asking for all students, faculty, and staff to wear blue jeans and a red- or violet-colored shirt. Red symbolizes the unwanted pain brought into the victim’s life, and violet is associated with enduring undesirable situations with inner strength. The color blue, from our blue jeans, represents wisdom and peace.

From the President’s Office2014 Commencement Speaker

The honored speaker for this spring’s Commencement is Áine Duggan, president of Re: Gender, formerly National Council for Research on Women. Ms. Duggan is focused on leveraging independent research to accelerate advancements for women and girls. She is a native of Ireland and earned her master’s degree from University College, Dublin.

Commencement: Faculty/Staff Participation

Commencement line up for the faculty/administrative staff processional will begin at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, on the west side of Reeves Hall. Faculty and administrative staff who need to be excused from Commencement must notify the senior administrator (Council member) responsible for their area. Council members need to notify Dr. Pridal of any excused absences by Friday, May 2.

Now Hiring: P.E.O. Relations ManagerThe Office of Institutional Advancement is pleased to announce the

opening for a P.E.O. Relations Manager, a position vacated by Tracy Hass Cordova, who accepted the position of annual fund and alumnae relations director. Duties include planning, directing, and coordinating

activities of P.E.O.-related functions. Bachelor’s degree, valid driver’s license, public speaking skills, strong computer skills, and previous work experience managing personnel required. Interested candidates should

Staff Awards

The annual administrative and hourly staff service awards presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. in Raney Dining Room. Afternoon snacks will be provided. Wellness award winners and Biggest Loser Challenge winners will also be announced.

Dr. Kanji Watanabe, associate professor of political science and international affairs, attended the 21st Annual Conference of the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education on April 10-11 in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Watanabe presented a teaching module titled, “Human Rights: the Xingjian Conflict in China.”

Eugene P. “Gene” Brandt, 83, of Lenexa, Kansas passed away April 9, 2014. No services are planned. Contributions suggested to the Catholic Community Hospice.

Join us as the Cottey College Jazz Ensemble and the Cottey College Wind Ensemble perform under the direction of William A. Martin. Following the theme of “Music from England,” a tie-in to this year’s International Experience, the Wind Ensemble will perform works by such composers as Ray Vaughn Williams, Zo Elliot, and female composer Adaline Maxwell Cooper, of London. The Jazz Ensemble will be performing a number of tunes by the Beatles, so make sure and join us for the fun!

fifty pieces chosen from hundreds to be entered into the Kansas City Artists

Coalition’s 19th Annual Student Juried Competition, April 11-April 25, 2014. On

Friday, April 11, 2014, Harriet (pictured left) attended the opening exhibition of her

artwork in Kansas City with fellow Cottey College student Connie Chan (pictured right). Professor Karen Polon provided

transportation and Professor Selena Kohel accompanied.

2014 Adah Bagby-Heiss Recipient

Congratulations to Alina Ghulam Rasool, the 2014 Adah Bagby-Heiss Memorial Essay Scholarship recipient! Titled “My Dreams and My Beliefs”, Ms. Rasool’s essay was selected out of a field of 18 applicants. Dorothy Notto of P.E.O. Chapter C-D in Washington D.C., sponsor of the $2,500 scholarship, expressed appreciation for the quality of essays submitted by the applicants. Chapter C-D sponsors this scholarship for first-year Cottey students annually.

Yoga Classes

Yoga resumes Tuesday, April 22! Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:20 p.m.- 6:10 p.m. in the large dance studio in HInkhouse. No experience necessary, mats provided. Drop in anytime. Last yoga class will be May 15.

Employee Volleyball

Employee Volleyball continues through the month of April on Wednesdays, at 5:15 p.m. in the Hinkhouse gym. Everyone is welcome to play!
