Crazy! Now it’s winter cold again. NE Ohio weather! As many of you are aware, our annual congregation meeting took place on January 19. I know there are tough decisions to be made financially in our church. There are so many good things taking place at FCC. We host Treehouse preschool as well as many community groups. FCC has found new avenues of ministry expression since we have been working together. We have added PowerPoint to our worship and new songs. We have growing children and youth activities in worship, such as weekly children’s messages, youth groups, WAMM (children’s Worship, Arts, Music Ministry), and Touch- down Time (over 100 youth invited after football games to enjoy activities at our church). Activities for families such as our Valentine’s and Fall Ball gatherings have been immensely popular. Moreo- ver, we continue to move in a direction to become a more inclusive church, all while working to pay off the Atrium, installing new carpeting, and adding two new staff people——and there are many other worthy additions to movements in a positive direction! At the same time, has there been conflict in our church? Yes. Change brings conflict. Varying opin- ions on what the church should do and how to do it brings conflict. Where there are diverse people in many regards, there is conflict. How we handle that conflict is the key. We need to be much more understanding, to listen to all sides, and close off the “parking lot” rumors and gossip. That behavior only hurts the church. We can help the church by directly going to a person to inquire about the facts or truth about something. We can do better. The first century church had these same issues, as do churches today. Thankfully, we do have control over how we choose to handle difficult situations. We will work together to find better solutions. We will work together to listen to one another more effectively. Despite our struggles moving forward, let us not forget we have many advantages working in our fa- vor. First, our Church is not the average UCC or denominational Church in worship attendance, staffing, activity, youth ministry, and numbers of younger families. The UCC conducted a nation- wide survey of UCC Churches in 2016 and released the results in 2017. The average UCC church is around 170 members and has 55 people coming to worship. The average UCC church has an annual budget of less than $200,000. So, we are well above average in terms of members, staff, programs, and ministries to our members and to the community. At our Living Waters Association Meeting this past fall, General Minister Nayiri Karjian challenged our churches “to embrace the future” in order to grow. How do we see that happening and make that happen at FCC in 2020 and beyond? Second, I believe that God wants the church to grow. This is not only a faith issue, but a “do” issue. We need to do what is effective and relevant in order to have the church grow. Our “taste” in music or worship; our way of organizing and administrating our church policies and procedures; our tradi- tions and so forth, are treasured realities of who we have been and who we are. But the question isn’t just about: What has been effective and valuable in the past.? The question for churches transi- tioning into the future is always: What are doing to prepare for tomorrow? Are we willing to give to that concept? Are we willing to be smart and work hard in other directions which are not familiar? The church wasn’t created in comfort and we are not called to be comfortable and secure. We are called to risk. That is not opinion. That is the model of the biblical church. That is the model of growing churches. We are called to see with new vision and to work in collaboration. And we are called and created in the church to love, to affirm, and to support one another. The good news is that I believe we have the ability, talents, and good will of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to be and to do just that. And God will bless our work. That is God’s promise. In Christ, Pastor Dave

2020 Budget and Congregational Meeting Summary

Our annual Congregational Meeting was held Sunday January 19th after the 10:00 AM worship service. We reviewed, discussed, and voted on the proposed 2020 Operating Budget, with a quorum of membership present. We appreciate all those who were in attendance for this important meeting and discussion.

As of January 13, 2020, this year, we have 142 families commit their financial support to the church for a current total of $251,018

The meeting included discussion on how best to proceed in the year ahead, how we can help manage our in-come and expenses and how it will relate to the staff to minimize any future deficits. Specific further discussion with the Investments & Endowment Committee will continue in the new year. The budget below was approved through a written ballot with 72 for the motion to approve, 25 against, with 2 abstentions. There have been and will be ongoing discussions on how to manage the budget deficit regarding current and future staff wage compensations.

Each year, the leaders of the church are challenged to be wise stewards of the church’s finances, and for the year 2020, the challenge will be especially demanding. We ask that all members of the church keep the staff, Pastor David and all leaders of the church in their thoughts and prayers for wisdom and guidance at all times, and especially related to our financial plans going forward.

• Executive Council met on Tuesday, January 14th to discuss our Winter programming, Fall Commitment Cam-

paign and Budget Planning, and other items relative to the ongoing programs and ministries at the church.

• A Congregational Meeting to review and vote on the proposed budget in 2020 will be held after the 10:00

AM worship service on Sunday, January 19th. A review of our current proposed budget was discussed at

length. A motion was made and approved for a budget to be presented, pending discussion with the Invest-

ments & Endowment Committee, on a potential disbursal from the non-Scholarship Endowment Fund.

• Pastoral and Staff Relations reported that Cathy Cotter, our new Administrative Coordinator, has been transi-

tioning well into the position. Also, staff reviews are currently underway. Pastor David's review has occurred

over the last several weeks.

• The Faith & Family Ministry is planning an upcoming Valentines Dance and a Roller skating event. They had

good reports on several events: a very well run and attended Breakfast with Santa, 67 people attending the

Christmas Caroling, 18 kids attending the 3rd 4th and 5th grade Lock-in at the church.

• A new women's book study each Sunday has kicked off, through Wendy Brown. It was extremely well

received and attended, with 8 of the 18 attendees being guests new to the church. Very good news for that

group!

• Board of Social Action reported on two upcoming events that support Family Promise; their Empty Bowl

event, as well as their bigger event, later in the year, Night at the Races event on Sep. 11.

• Board of Music Ministry reported about an upcoming concert featuring musician Steve Nelson on Saturday,

March 14th. Everyone is extremely excited about this event. We will reach out to other churches so that

many in our surrounding community can experience the event.

• February 23rd, the Board of Christian Education will partner with the Music Board to host a soup challenge

with games, trivia, and a raffle. It will be an inter-generational event to help provide fellowship while also rais-

ing funds for our youth programs. We look forward to more details on that soon.

• Our end of year financials ended December at $397,967.93 in expenses, $346,203.96 in total income for a

YTD deficit of -$51,763.97. Our carryover operating money has then gone from $73,670.73 on Jan 1 to

$21,906.71 to end the year.

Women’s Book Study

“Your life is supposed to be a journey from one unique place to another; it’s not sup-

posed to be a merry-go-round that brings you back to the same spot over and over

again.” - Rachel Hollis, author of Girl, Wash your face, stop believe in lies about who

you are so you can become who you were meant to be.

All women are in invited to join the conversation about the weekly chapter readings in

Girl, Wash your face. We will meet on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in David Bacon

Room. I ask you to purchase your own book. Discussion on chapter ONE began on Sun-

day, January 12. Please join us for any week you are able, or any part of the hour you

are able (choir members are most certainly invited to join us until choir begins). I per-

sonally think this book will be good for all ages and it may lead to great discussion be-

tween ladies sharing our life experiences. Wendy Brown will be leading the discussion.

Come one, come all, to our “February Frolic”. The Elders will be hosting a

movie comedy presentation, pie and snacks on Saturday, February 22, 2020 in

WAMM Choir

Erin Hoffman, Cindy Dodge and Lindsay Williams will be the directors of WAMM choir for the rest of this

school year. They have some exciting plans for the children to sing and some great songs and use YouTube

to help them sing and learn the motions. Children age 3-4th grade who would like to join the choir can

come to the fellowship hall after the children’s message during the worship service. Looks like some ex-

citing new things happening with the WAMM choir. Following choir, the children will also talk about the

scripture and object lesson of the day. Feel free to talk to them about the lessons and songs they learned

each week. The WAMM choir is planning on singing on February 9, March 8, April 5 and May 10.

Fourth Grade Communion

Every year, the Board of Christian Education organizes classes to make

sure our children are understanding what communion is, the meaning

behind it and the symbolism that it represents. We do that when

children are in 4th grade. We will offer communion classes with the

Deacons and Pastor Dave on February 16 and 23 in the Library at 9:00

AM. Then on March 1, they will take communion together with their parents in worship. Please mark your

calendars.

and the check to Cathy Cotter.

December, 2019 operating income of

$47,438 was $16,700 above the

monthly income budget. Operating

expenses for the month were

$39,332 resulting in a surplus of

$8,100 in December, and a year-to-

date deficit of ($51,762). Operating

expenses are really our ministries

and missions at work, and are de-

pendent on Faith Offerings. We look

forward in prayer to a theology of

generosity, and the ability to contin-

ue growing our ministries. Contact

the Church office to find out how to

sign up for automatic monthly giving.

And, don’t forget to buy SCRIP cards

on Sunday mornings.
