WE WILLREMEMBERIn February Miss Hulme had the opportunity to take two of our Year 11 students, Danny Cook and Caitlin Blood to visit the First World War Battlefields in Belgium and France.

The visit was part of a government funded project called the ‘Centenary Battlefield tour’ that is offered to schools throughout thecountry in the hope of keeping the memory of the First World War alive. The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit and learnt some invaluable knowledge of the experience of war and the importanceof remembrance.

Students from Years 9 & 10 took the opportunity to impress ceramic experts with their ideas at the first ever Stoke-on-Trent Ceramic Challenge. Teams were given three tasks byrepresentatives from WadeCeramics, Royal Crown Derby and the British CeramicsConfederation.

Our Year 10s were tasked to design a new ceramic perfume bottle, while Year 9s were asked for a marketing campaign to promote the ceramics industry. They got the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges when they went head-to-head with 8 other schools in the Grand Final at the Victoria Hall.

The Stoke-on-Trent CeramicChallenge is part of the Essential Life Skills Fund and was run by

The Inspirational Learning Group in conjunction with the BCC and Business in the Community. The students involved were Armagan Ashir, Logan Askey, George Bentley, Ruxandra Birea, Nathan Edwards, Kristifer Hosey, Zoe Jackson, Ethan King, Lauren Rhodes, Maham Riaz, Jeroen Robinson and Esme Rogers.

Looking to the future THROUGHTHE PASTOn Thursday 21st March, a number of GCSE History students from Years 9 and 10 attended a Higher Horizons History outreach event at Keele University. The day gave students the opportunity to experience a number of academic sessions around the subject of World War I: ‘Conscience and Conflict in WWI’, ‘WWI Battlefield medicine’, ‘Cinematic Depiction of War’ and ‘Forgotten Faces: Hidden Figures of WWI’. This was designed to encourage thestudents in their currentstudies and also to inspire them to consider continuing their studies of History beyond GCSE. The day was an opportunity for students to get a feel for what it is like to study at degree level and to talk to current undergraduate students. The best part of the day was a presentation from ‘Frontline Living History’ who took the students through a typical day in the trenches.

Watching THE PASTMr Bailey had the pleasure of taking fifteen Year 9 History students to Keele University. Whilst there they watched a performancecreated by the Holocaust MemorialFoundation and the New Vic Theatre. It was a gripping story of the life of a brother and sister living in Poland during WWII. It told of their day-to-day life and how it was tragically and subversively altered through the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime.

The students were attentive, respectful and behaved exceptionally throughout.

FIRST TECH ChallengeMiss Abbotts took 20 students toManchester on 15th March for the First Tech Challenge where Haywood was 1 of 100 Northern schools that are part of the first cohort of the challenge. The pupils had a great day battling their robots, working with other schools and improving their STEM skills.

One of our teams managed to get to the top 4 alliance out of 100 teams which is a really big achievement! The other team came 11th overall which is still really good. We also came 3rd in the engineering award, and are really pleased with the outcome - all of those hours were worth it! The pupils are really proud of their achievements and have enjoyed the whole experience.

Our Year 10 Health & Social Care students had a brilliant day at Aspire to Care on 22nd January, where they discovered the jobsavailable to them in the health and socialsector and the different pathways of study. They took part in a number of workshops and group tasks researching roles andresponsibilities, received guest talks from a variety of staff with diverse roles and skills, looked at adults and children who requiresupport, and children in looked-afterhousing.Students concluded the day trialling some sign language, using a technique called Makaton, and they became visually impaired and wore braces for restricted movements to explore how service users may feel when being cared for.

High FlyersThis summer, two lucky Year 10 students will have the opportunity to attend a week-long residential at the University of Oxford as part of a programme called Universify, aimed at encouraging students from parts of thecountry with traditionally low progression rates into Higher Education. They will attend taster sessions in a range of subjects to give a taste of the kinds of degrees on offer, as well as experiencing studentaccommodation and the best that Oxford has to offer – including the chance to go punting on the river! This is the fourth year Haywood students have attended this opportunity, and the fun doesn’t stop there! Last year’s cohort recently attended a follow-up session in Oxford to help them prepare for the up-coming GCSEs.

SOCIAL WORK

‘Whitewater Writers’ camp.Beginning by sharing themes important to them, the boys selected ‘health’ as their focus and worked on a story about an international virus which caused a major shift in society, as well as damaging health. With the support of Richard from Whitewater Writers, by the end of day one of the project, the students had created a fully formed plot. By the end of day five a complete book had been produced!

‘Patient Zero’ by T.M. Cooks will be available to buy from Amazon following a launch and author signing event at the end of May.

ENTERPRISINGStudentsStudents from Year 9 have taken part in an Enterprise Challenge event at Keele University. Following a challenge day in February, two teams - Money Manager and Healthy Minds - made it through to the final on 18th March, where they pitched their plans for a business idea that would help university students. The judges included Emma Jones from Signal 1, and was hosted by Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely, members of dance group Diversity. All students proved to be fine ambassadors for Haywood Academy.

Humanities atKEELESome of our Year 10 students attended aHumanities event run by Higher Horizons at Keele University on 12th February.Students were engrossed in code-breaking, map reading and strategy planning, and learned about topics such as the American West, the Cold War, the Arctic Circle and Super Volcanoes!

Two teams of Year 10 students from Haywood have built remote-controlled battle robots as part of the KMF Young Engineers project, and have had the opportunity to battle them against robots from other schools. Each team took part in three battles, just like on ‘Robot Wars’, and judges and crewmembers from the TV programme were on hand at the event. One of the Haywood robots has progressed to the final in July. Good luck!

KMF YOUNG ENGINEERS

Some of our able Year 10 Scientists andMathematicians took part in a ScienceOlympics at The City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College on Friday 25th January against teams from across the city.Amongst the events was a boat buildingcompetition, a Biology quiz, and anopportunity for students to test theirChemistry practical skills. They even hunted for gold!

Science OLYMPIANS

Two groups of Year 11 students visited Keele University this term for a Focus 4 and a Super 6 Maths event organised by the MathsExcellence Partnership to enhance their maths attainment in Year 11.Our Haywood students were excellent ambassadors for Haywood and contributed to both sessions, showing a confidence in their knowledge and building on their deeper understanding.

Another Super Six Day was held for some of our Year 11 Scientists as part of theStoke-on-Trent Secondary SciencePartnership, and provided them with some last-minute skills boosts.

Extra FOCUS

On the straight AND NARROWA brilliant time was had by our Year 11 History students at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham on 2nd April. They enjoyed taking part in an actual court trial, where they played the parts of themembers of the court, and also took a visit to the dungeons, the cells, had a go in the stocks, on the step and the crank handle- all elements of History Paper 1:Crime, Punishment and Law Enforcement.

MyEd AppWe are changing the way that we communicate with parents, and relaunching the My Ed app.We would like all parents to download this so that they can keep up to date with what is going on in school. The app is free to download, notifications are free to receive, and parents can send messages to the school free of charge.

What sort of information can parents see?

The app needs to be downloaded on the phone that has the samenumber that we have on record. If we do not have the mobile number

stored you can download the app but it will not show your child’s details. It is very important that we are kept up-to-date with any change of mobile number so that you can continue to use the app. You can only see information about your own children, and so there is no risk of anyone being able to see information about other students.

The app includes information about:

• Attendance (absence can also be reported through the app) • Forms to complete can be downloaded (change of address etc.) • Key dates-important things going on in school • Contact numbers • News items • Links to social media

How to download the app:

1. Go to your app store 2. Search for My Ed 3. Download the app 4. Search for the school name

As long as the mobile number is the same as the one on SIMS then the app willautomatically bring up details for students linked to that number. If there is more than one child in the family then it will bring up details for all students. Students can download the app too but they will not be able to see information about them. They will be able to see general information about the school such as news, key dates etc.

Thanks to Mrs Andrews, who has sadly left us this term after two years at City College supporting the Year 12 Pre-Apprenticeship students in finding employment. One of her biggest successes is Luke Cassidy who Mrs Andrews visited throughout his work experience and supported into an apprenticeship at Synectics. Good Luck, you will be missed!

At the end of this term we say goodbye to Miss Lovatt who has worked at Haywood Academy as the head of Religious Studies for three years. Over these years she has encouraged a love of R.S throughout the school and has helped many students past and present to achieve above and beyond their potential. She will be missed by both students and staff.

After 15 years, we say goodbye to Mr Bebbington. A former student who at the age of 30 returned as a Learning Mentor, working with a range of students. Primarily an Art teacher, he also taught PE, Photog-raphy, DT and Product Design. He has been a dedicated, committed teacher, an excellent form tutor, and a Head of Year for 3 years. For many years he also coached Basketball which produced a number of National League players, earning Haywood a reputation for excellence within the sport. He is taking his expertise to the Co-operativeAcademy, and will be greatly missed by all.“I’ve had the pleasure of giving back to my community in an attempt to make a difference to people’s lives. As staff, our actions and intentions don’t always make sense to young people in preparing them for the future but we hope that they realise sooner rather than later. I wish the students, staff and the school every success for the future.”

However, thebiggest hit was the campus tour that students were able to go on using state-of-the-art virtual reality headsets! This is just one part of our programme of preparation events designed to advise students how to choose a university and successfully apply. The Bus also visited the Haywood Academy site, where some of our Year 10s got the opportunity to visit and learn more, helping ourstudents to start considering their options post-18.

Year 12 and Year 13 engineering students visited Lucideon in Stoke on 20th March.Luicideon is a company that test materials to identify properties and problems with them. For example, they recently had parts from inside Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car engine as there was a problem with the cylinder linings cracking, and they had to find out why it was happening. The students saw a tensile test on a pieceof steel, and they were shown an electronmicroscope to examine a ceramic sample, where they looked for faults in the glaze.
