Thank you for showing an interest in joining Haywood Sixth Form Academy. I hope that you will find this prospectus both useful and encouraging. We are a new type of sixth form aimed at preparing students for the modern world – from our special partnership with some of the top universities in England and across the world, to the hundreds of businesses that offer work placement opportunities or apprenticeships to our students, we have a special experience on offer for you.

We value your aspirations for the future and are fully committed to supporting you in your university or careers based journey. One of our great strengths is that we offer a continuity of experience and that we are small enough to care for every student on a personal level. Many of our sixth form students will choose to stay with us at the end of their year 11 studies in an environment where they are known and which encourages the highest standards.

If you are new to Haywood, you will soon find that you become known to staff and peers and are part of a supportive, welcoming community that aims to provide a personalised sixth form experience to maximise your full potential. Personal mentors support students on a one to one basis and monitor their progress and attainment so that they feel supported and encouraged during their transition to the adult world.

Making decisions about the next stage of your education is both exciting and challenging. Exciting in the sense that you can now choose to focus on the experience that will lead you to success and enjoyment. Challenging, because you need to make informed decisions, which will open career options for your future. At Haywood Sixth Form Academy you can trust us to help you make the right decisions.

Welcome from Stephen Hargreaves, Academy Careers Development Advisor

Teachers should bring out the best in students and I believe that the very best teachers can awaken a real joy in creative expression and a thirst for knowledge that can last a lifetime. I remember the teachers that taught me, and the opportunities I had and I look to create those now for our students.

My Haywood experience started in 2007 as a Business and Information Communication Technology teacher. I have always been heavily involved with pastoral care and took on the role of Year 11 Performance Leader for the 2013/14 school year. Haywood is a wonderful place to work and I feel a great sense of pride in supporting our students through their journey.

This journey is soon to be extended as we open our new sixth form in September 2015 to Year 12 students. Our aim is to open a sixth form that offers you a rewarding experience, where students achieve academically, learn

life skills and make the transition to become young adults.

I am excited to be a part of this venture and look forward to working with new and existing students.

We have a long association with Haywood Academy and we are absolutely delighted to be a part of the Academy’s future by sponsoring this project. From a company and industry perspective, as a world leader, we need young people coming into the organisation with the right skills, knowledge and the right aptitude.

Anything we can do to support local education and to foster good relationships between education and industry is vitally important.

Stoke-on-Trent’s ceramics industry is undergoing a renaissance and we must build for the future.

A thriving Burslem town centre is vitally important to Steelite International – we’re fiercely proud of the town’s famous heritage.

By locating the Haywood Sixth Form Academy in the old town hall we will help increase footfall in the town and, I am certain, boost its economy.Kevin Oakes, Chief Executive of Academy Sponsor Steelite International

Messages of support

To lead the development of Haywood Sixth Form Academy has been an honour. My educational philosophy is based around the belief that schools should be a true community, where everyone works for the common benefit. I believe that the richest learning experiences come through a mixture of challenge and cooperation. Students are at the heart of everything we do and sixth form should be an experience that is rewarding and full of exciting learning experiences.

I will continue to develop the Academy’s sixth form to provide opportunities so that any student can attend one of the top universities in the country or begin their chosen career as a confident, well-prepared, young adult.

Welcome from Mike WhittinghamSenior Assistant Head

Over my many years in Parliament I have worked with successive head teachers at Haywood to encourage its pupils to aim high.

The establishment of the Academy’s very own sixth form in the centre of Burslem will boost educational achievement, encourage a sense of belonging to our

local community here and give students the very best start for their lifetime career and lifelong learning.

I am very proud that Haywood Sixth Form Academy will be open for business in September 2015 and shall be giving it my full support.Joan Walley, Stoke-on-Trent North MP

Messages of support

Dave Johnson, Chair of Governors

The opening of Haywood Sixth Form Academy has been eagerly anticipated by students. It gives them the opportunity to have Haywood Academy as part of their education, development and progress from primary age to sixth form and extends the community focus of the school as it is now.

The new sixth form will also play an important role in the regeneration of Burslem and provide great opportunities for students to move on to university or enter the world of work successfully.

Haywood Academy has already created a successful school community built on co-operation and learning. We’re one of the best performing non-selective schools in the region and OFSTED rated us “Good with Exemplary Features”. We are very conscious that at 16 our students’ journey is not finished.

For students already studying at Haywood Academy, staying with your school sixth form provides continuity in your learning and an environment where you are known and which encourages the highest standards.

For students moving to Haywood from another school, Haywood Sixth Form Academy offers you a stress-free transition. We will make sure that you have chosen the right course and are making excellent progress right from day one. Your personal tutor will care about your progress and wellbeing. Groups will be small so you will be given the time you need to share thoughts, ideas or concerns to make sure the outcomes are great for you.

We are offering a wide curriculum choice based on what you need to access the best universities – some of them in other countries – or to access those hard to find jobs or apprenticeships. The curriculum has been tailored to suit each and every one of you whatever your interests and long-term plans.

Haywood Sixth Form Academy is here for you.

Haywood Sixth Form Academy will breathe new life into Burslem’s historic town hall.

We’re delighted to have an opportunity to make a difference and we’re delighted with the response we’ve received from local businesses and the community.

Through an exciting partnership with leading tableware manufacturer Steelite International, the support of Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Princes Trust, the new sixth form will be housed in a £2.1m development.

The investment will see 400 students move into the beautiful old town hall – famous for the golden angel which stands on top of its clock tower - whilst the single storey Ceramica extension outside the old building will be demolished and a two-storey classroom and office block will be built on the site to accommodate more students.

Learning will be accommodated across the whole town hall building, with classrooms and workspaces on all floors. There will be an IT-based learning support centre, a library and break out zones for informal study.

Sciences will be taught in existing laboratories at the school’s High Lane campus – five minutes away from the town centre. The school campus will also house workshops and studios with CAD/CAM facilities such as 3D printers, laser cutters, Dye Sublimation Printers and CAD/CAM machine embroidery.

Pastoral Care

Dress Code

Our academy motto is ‘inspiring excellence and achievement’. We aim to raise aspirations, expectations and achievement for all our students in a happy, caring and successful learning environment.

Our mission is to develop highly qualified and skilled young adults who achieve to the best of their ability, who are active citizens and who are fully committed to supporting both their local and the global community. If you’re transferring into the sixth form from Year 11 at Haywood, there is the advantage that you will already be well known and your strengths, and weaknesses already identified. So we can offer guidance and support from the beginning of your sixth form life and you can focus on your work and other activities in a secure and well-understood environment.

If you’re joining the sixth form from another school or college, the induction process and pastoral system is designed to ease your ‘settling in’ period and support is available from the sixth form team throughout the transfer process and on into the academic year.

The personal tutor is a central figure for students at Haywood Sixth Form Academy. Tutors have pastoral oversight of all of our young people and will meet regularly with you either individually or in groups. It is the tutor’s role to be the first point of contact between you, your parents, and the sixth form.

Supporting the personal tutor is Laura Billington (Head of Sixth Form) who takes an active role in the lives of students and will personally monitor your academic progress as you progress through the sixth form. She will liaise closely with other agencies and provide extra professional support and guidance if you need it.

There is also a dedicated careers team, working together for you to move you through the UCAS application process or support you in gaining employment.

In line with other post 16 providers in the area, casual dress is acceptable as long as it is respectable and sensible. If you are undertaking a work based learning programme, you should adhere to the standard of dress at your placement.

The Academy is looking to support your life opportunities whether that is university or entering the world of work.

The new sixth form will offer you a number of learning pathways and will support your varying ambitions to study vocationally-related courses, in partnership with successful, highly regarded companies.

The innovative Work Based Learning approach will involve two distinct elements:

• Two days per week at Haywood Sixth Form Academy studying employability skills, Personal Development and Life Skills as well as Maths, English and ICT

• Three days per week developing vocational skills working with one of our partner businesses

The Work Based Learning option is a ‘pre-traineeship’. This is an education and training programme that is combined with real, beneficial, work experience and is focused on giving you the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

From September 2015, new Government rules require all young people to remain in education until their 18th birthday. Businesses cannot employ you during term-time, but do have the option of employing you during the summer, or for part-time weekend work.

These rules will make taking part in our Work Based Learning programme even more attractive for businesses looking to recruit young people into their ranks.

History A Level encourages you to understand and think intelligently about aspects of modern history. It involves much more than just learning vast amounts of factual information.

What most students find rewarding in History is the attempt to understand, evaluate and analyse the past. Questions at AS/A level are designed to make you think critically about the material and to formulate your own assessments. You will, for example, learn to make judgements about the policies of individual leaders and nations, or to analyse the causes of a particular event and evaluate the importance of different factors. Then you will have to write a well-organised and clearly explained essay giving your answer.

Exam/coursework breakdown:

Year 12 Component 1: Breadth Study (40% of the A Level)The Quest for Political Stability: Germany, 1871-1929.

Year 13 Component 2: Depth Study (40% of the A Level)International Relations and Global Conflict, c1890-1917.

Year 13 Coursework (20% of A Level)

Entry requirementsIt is not essential to have studied History for GCSE, but success in English GCSE may be a good guide as to your likely aptitude for the subject.

Progression possibilitiesIt is widely recognised that A Level History remains an academically demanding subject with high prestige. Universities and employers know that someone who has been successful in the study of History should have acquired a range of important skills.

The skills used in History are relevant to a much wider range of subjects and vocations and it is a good A level to consider taking if you are interested in pursuing any Humanities-based degree at university.

It is perhaps the best A level to take if you are thinking of studying Law at university.

TeachingWe aim to raise aspirations, expectations and achievement for all our students in a happy, caring and successful learning environment.

Whilst your young adult is with us, we will do our best to ensure they achieve their full potential and develop into highly qualified and skilled young adults.

Student SupportThe induction process and pastoral system is designed to ease our students ‘settling in’ period and support is available from the sixth form team throughout the academic year.

Every student will have a personal tutor and will meet regularly with them, either individually or in groups. It is the tutor’s role to be the first point of contact between your son or daughter, you, and the sixth form.

There is also a dedicated careers team, working together for your son or daughter to move them through the UCAS application process or support them in gaining employment.

Keeping you InformedWe will invite you along to events at Haywood Sixth Form Academy during the year. Progress evenings will give you an opportunity to meet with tutors and ask any questions, and awards evenings will give you the opportunity to celebrate your son or daughter’s achievements.

Attendance Policy All students are expected to maintain excellent attendance in all their classes. If students are absent for any reason then a parent/guardian needs to ensure they ring in to the sixth form office by 8am. If they are a Work Based Learning student, they will also need to ring their work placement office before 8am. Laura Billington and the form tutors will then pursue reasons for absence to see if any support is needed to be implemented.
