OBJECTS OF THE GUILD1. Intercessory prayer for the dying and for the

repose of the souls of the departed.

2. To promote the two great doctrines of theChristian Creed: “The Communion of Saints”and “The Resurrection of the Dead”.

The following are particularly commended to theprayers of members.

(a) The restoration of the scriptural rite ofanointing the sick with holy oil, commonlycalled Holy Unction.

(b) The restoration of the primitive custom ofreserving the Holy Eucharist for the sick anddying.

To Pray must also mean to care.

As members of this devotional Guild we must carefor the dying, the dead and the bereaved.

I’m sure that the most important part of the work of The Guild, andcertainly the task which most fulfils the intentions of our founders, is thedaily offering of the Mass in the Guild Chapel, here in Walsingham.

At that celebration, each day, the Chantry list of former members isprayed, and from time to time I manage to recount some of the heroismfor the Gospel and the Catholic Tradition within our church, as shownforth in the lives of this “great cloud of witnesses”. Indeed beingreminded daily of those who, even in my own lifetime, have witnessedfearlessly for the catholic faith, proves deeply humbling.

May I take this opportunity to invite all parishes who come toWalsingham on pilgrimage, especially those who have a branch of TheGuild, to offer a Requiem in the Chapel; you’ll find the sacristans mosthelpful in making the necessary arrangements. Individual membersshould certainly make a point of attending, at least once during theirstay.

Another very valuable ministry is in the publication and distribution ofliterature concerning death and bereavement. Perhaps the most usefulbooklet is that entitled “Upon my Death”. Her you have the opportunityto leave all the instructions for your funeral, aong with many moremundane details so useful to those who will be left to manage youraffairs. You’ll also find a wide selection of prayer cards suitable forsending to the recently bereaved, or simply for your own comfort. All ofthis material is FREE of CHARGE!

All of the above are material things. Part of my own ministry here isto be available to any who want to unburden themselves of some of thepain of loss. Now clearly I can’t just sit about waiting, but I’m alwaysready to make an appointment and if, during the Healing Ministries onSaturday evening, you feel drawn to talk, just ask one of the other clergyand they’ll guide you towards me. I’ve had my share of close and painfulbereavement and remember how comforting it was just to talk. TheBritish Stiff Upper Lip is sometimes a great hindrance to the healingprocess; we all know that the answer lies in God’s love for us, but veryoften we can’t see that truth through our tears and need someone elseto remind us of it.

There’s a school of thought which suggests that once we are dead, there is no more to be done for us on earth. I violently disagree; thepurpose of a funderal is not just to comfort the bereaved but, primarily,to pray a soul into Heaven. I often meditate on the words of S. ThomasMore, as he took leave of his family in the Tower before going to hisexecution:

“Pray for me, as I shall pray for thee; that merrily we may meet inHeaven.”

O eternal God, whose mercies cannot be numbered, accept our prayers for your servants ........................ and grant them an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of your saints, through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

10

Rest eternal grant to them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them: May their souls, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. May they rise in glory.

For the Dying

O Lord Jesus Christ, in your last agony you committed your spirit into the hands of your heavenly Father; have mercy on all sick and dying people; may death be to them the gate of everlasting life; and give to them the assurance of your presence even in the dark hour of their passing, for you are the resurrection and the life; and to you be the glory for ever and ever.

For those who have committed suicide

Almighty God, Father of all, have mercy on the souls of those who, in their darkness, have thrown away their mortal lives; grant them light and salvation that they may find life in your love and glorify your Holy Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

For those tempted to assist in the suicide of others

Almighty God, have mercy on all who, in great distress, are tempted to assist in the suicide of those whom they love. Grant them courage, patience, understanding, and wisdom; lighten their burden and restrain their hand, for the sake of your Son,who underwent suffering and death to bring us to life everlasting –Jesus Christ our Lord.

For Guild Members

O God, you appointed us all once to die, but have hidden from us the hour of our death; grant that the members of our Guild may so pass their days in holiness of life that we may be prepared, when you shall call, to meet you and enter into that rest which you have prepared for those who love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
