The Godhead Pt. 6 The Father Pt. 2

April 16, 2014 We’re in a study on the Godhead and our main verse is First John 5:7—“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” These Witnesses bear record that we’ve overcome the world and that we have eternal life. They bear record to the covenant of grace. We’ve seen how the Holy Spirit is involved in this and how He gives us life, teaches us truth, makes us walk in holiness, comforts us, and keeps us until the last day. Last week we started with the Father and we learned that He’s called that because of His part in giving the inheritance to His Son and to all His children. This week we’re going to press on a little further and try to see some other specific things about Him and how He helps His children: He is the Creator of all things, and He is over all The Holy Spirit was certainly involved in creation, but He wasn’t alone. Remember He said, “Let us make man in our image” (Gen. 1:26). The New Testament shows us that the Father is also involved: But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him (I Cor. 8:6). One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all (Eph. 4:6). This is important as it relates to the covenant because it shows He has the right to give the inheritance to the Son. He is over all and everything is “of” Him. So, look at what He does as the God and Father of all: He reveals the “plan” to His children Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. 21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. 22All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him (Lk. 10:20-22).

Jesus instructs His disciples not to rejoice that the enemy is subject to them; rejoice instead because there’s a record in heaven with their names on it. Think of it: there are three that bear record in heaven, and they testify that we’ve overcome the world and have eternal life. Don’t rejoice that the demons are subjected to you; rejoice that you’ll receive life because of the covenant! And then He goes on to to show that the Father has hidden this plan from the world but He’s shown it to the children. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God! That brings us to the next point: He sends the Holy Spirit and the Son as Witnesses of the covenant Speaking in terms relating to the covenant, the Father sends the Son and the Spirit out to His people: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (Jn. 14:26). And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world (I Jn. 4:14). They both go willingly and perform their specific operations. They go under the authority of the Father to gather together the heirs of the promise. This is the inheritance that is promised to us: He is the Giver of all blessings, and He caused us to be born again Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Eph. 1:3-6) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures (Jas. 1:17-18).

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (I Pt. 1:3-5). Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son (Col. 1:12-13). So, this is the Father’s plan: that we should be saved. But there’s a long while between now and then. What does He do in the meantime? There are several things I think will fit under one heading: He comforts us in our tribulation Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God (II Cor. 1:3-4). Whether this comforting comes through chastening or grace or whatever means He chooses He reminds us that we are heirs of His covenant. He is the Father, the Lord of all, who has promised these things to His Son and we are co-heirs with Him! newgracebaptistchurch.wordpress.com
