Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Michigan

Past, Present and Future of Innovation, Clinical Practice and LeadershipIn September 2016, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Division. As part of that celebration the Division held a two-day symposium, “GI and Hepatology at the University of Michigan: Past, Present and Future of Innovation, Clinical Practice and Leadership.” Faculty, fellows, alumni, U-M leadership and friends of the Division were invited to attend.

The Thursday program, moderated by Drs. Chung Owyang and William D. Chey, included Dr. John Carethers, followed by leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology from across the nation, including Drs. Tachi Yamada, Rick Boland and David Lieberman. Distinguished alumni speakers included Drs. Ezra Burstein, Joseph Elmunzer, Michael Kochman, Uri Ladabaum, John Inadomi and Michael Lucey.

The Friday program, moderated by Dr. Juanita Merchant, showcased the achievements of some of our own U-M faculty, including Drs. Anna Lok, Liz Speliotes, John Allen, John Wiley, Peter Higgins, William Chey, Hari Conjeevaram, Thomas Wang, Jason Spence and Nobu Kamada. Mary Petrovich, a philanthropist and friend of the Division, was also on hand to give her personal reflection on patient care and the future of innovation.

On Friday, Medicine Grand Rounds was presented by a special guest, Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The Symposium was followed by a dinner at the beautiful University of Michigan Museum of Art. After a reception, which showcased a five-panel work of art by Bill Burgard that was commissioned for the event, Chung Owyang welcomed guests and introduced Dr. Joel Howell who led guests along an interesting journey of the history of the University and the Division. A video produced just for the occasion was shown, after which Dr. Chey introduced remarks by Drs. James Woolliscroft, Tachi Yamada and Daniel Podolsky. The final toast of the night was given by John Carethers who announced the establishment of the Chung Owyang, MD, Professorship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This endowed chair is intended to support future chiefs of the U-M Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and will ensure that Dr. Owyang’s legacy of dedication will live on at the University of Michigan in perpetuity.

The history of the Division, from the modest beginning in the 1940s, to the tailgate and football game attended by guests of the 75th Anniversary Celebration, has been artfully captured in a 184-page book, “Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future: 75 Years of Discovery, Innovation and Care”.

DDW 2017 Awards and Recognition

We are proud to announce the following award recipient from the University of Michigan Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology who will be recognized at DDW 2016.

Juanita L. Merchant, MD, PhDDistinguished Achievement Award in Basic ScienceAmerican Gastroenterological Association

AGA is proud to honor Juanita L. Merchant, MD, PhD, with the Distinguished Achievement Award in Basic Science, which recognizes a senior investigator who has made major accomplishments in basic science research that has significantly advanced the science and/or practice of gastroenterology.Dr. Merchant’s discoveries in the field of transcription factors and its application to gastric physiology and pathophysiology are among her many achievements deserving recognition. Dr. Merchant is the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastrointestinal Sciences, a Professor of Internal Medicine and Integrative and Molecular Physiology, and Associate Director of the MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Michigan. Dr. Merchant began her undergraduate research career after her sophomore year at Stanford University studying lipid metabolism in the rat ileum. She completed her medical degree and PhD in cell biology at Yale University School of Medicine. After completing an internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, she returned to the laboratory as a physician–scientist to study the transcriptional control mechanisms underpinning homeostatic and neoplastic development in the luminal GI tract and subsequently completed her clinical fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Merchant began her research career by asking a simple, but fundamental question in gastroenterology – how does the hormone gastrin sense acid and maintain homeostasis in the stomach? This question has been the basis of her research for nearly 25 years. Among Dr. Merchant’s foremost achievements are her studies of hedgehog signaling in the stomach during homeostasis and neoplastic transformation. In short, studies from Dr. Merchant’s laboratory have remained exciting, cutting edge and focused on the regulation and downstream targets modulated by elevated gastrin. Dr. Merchant was one of the first assistant investigators in gastroenterology in the Howard Hughes Research Institute, Chevy Chase, MD. She was selected to be a Harold Amos scholar by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a program that supports the transition of minority physicians to careers in academic medicine. At the University of Michigan, Dr. Merchant was recognized when she was transitioning from assistant to associate professor with the Jerome Conn Award, which is given to a junior faculty who shows the most promise in research and mentorship. She has participated on the AGA Research Committee, the AGA Nominating Committee, and the AGA PhD, MD/PhD, DVM Committee, and was chair of the Hormones, Transmitters, Growth Factors, and Their Receptors Section of the AGA Institute Council. She has served on several NIH study sections, including chair of the Molecular Gastroenterology Study Section. Subsequently, she served on the NIDDK Council and was an initial member of the Council of Councils. She currently serves on the NIDDK Board of Scientific Review. Dr. Merchant has been elected into prestigious medical honor societies, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Few gastroenterologists or scientists in the field of gastroenterology are members of NAM, further highlighting Dr. Merchant’s outstanding research career over the years and qualifications for this AGA award.
