NL Nuclear – Some history

1955 Reactor Centre of the Netherlands (RCN), Petten, NL 1976 Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) o High Flux Reactor (1958 – present): 45 MWth MTR (owned by the EC)o Low Flux Reactor (1960 – present): 30 kW Argonaut

1957 KEMA Nuclear Physics Laboratory, Arnhem, NLo KEMA Suspension Test Reactor (1974 – 1977)

1958 Reactor Institute Delft (Delft University), NL 196x IRI 2005 RIDo Hoger Onderwijs Reactor (1963– present): 2 MWth MTR

1963 – 1980 BARN reactor at Agricultural University of Wageningen 1963 – 1969 STEK/KRITO, Petten, NL 1969 – 1973 ATHENE reactor at Eindhoven University October 1998 Merger of nuclear departments of ECN and KEMA into NRG –

remaining parts of ECN and KEMA non-nuclear…

Possible sources of NCL for INIS…

INIS liaison NL - past

Hillebrand Verkroost was an active INIS ILO until some time after the formation of NRG:o CL/NCL from ECN and other NL sources (bibliographic

records) After that the INIS ILO was transferred to NRG; NCL

dataflow to INIS effectively stopped not long afterwards Large number of bibliographic records going directly from

NL-based publisher Elsevier to INIS (> 20000 per year) Collection of legacy “nuclear” reports from “Petten”:

o 249 RCN external reports 1960 - 1976o 225 ECN external reports 1976 - 1989

Inserted into INIS? At least partly…

INIS liaison NL - present Large number of bibliographic records still going directly from NL-based

publisher Elsevier to INIS (> 20000 per year) “Gap” in NCL from NL (not only NRG!) between ~2000 and present NL INIS centre is effectively 1 person, part-time: JCK since August 2008 In the last 10 years NRG produced approx. 500 reports per year An unknown fraction (TBD) of these should have been inserted into INIS: to

be done(?) The question is: what to do? INIS-related tasks:

o Organise national INIS centre… (see above)o Input of information (!)o Support access to informationo Promote INIS

First restart the flow of information on NCL from NRG to INIS:o Legacy ECN/NRG “nuclear” reports (already in INIS?) (A problem…)o NRG non-confidential reports from ~2000 till present (THE problem…)o New NRG non-confidential reports (Hillebrand Verkroost can help

with this!)

INIS liaison NL – the way forward NRG is in the process of installing an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS)

NCL from NRG to INIS should be OKo Document (NRG reports) and metadata should be inserted in such a way (by the

authors!) that export to INIS will be trivial (XML format; bibliographic data + full text): to be inserted in EDMS definiton phase

o Not in place yet (end of 2011?)o Interaction/Integration with MET/CAI would be helpful

NL INIS centre will probably stay a 1-person, part-time operation o Other NL sources of NCL should be convinced to do the same (with NRG as a good

example )o Still no 100% coverage for other “nuclear” literature:

What to do?o Data from publishers…

Take up the other INIS-related tasks (previous slide)o INIS Widget on NRG website/portal NRG Communications department

Can the INIS Secretariat help with a:o solution for RCN/ECN legacy reports???o solution for NRG reports from ~2000 until present???o solution for legacy reports from other NL organisations (to be identified)???
