Guest Speaker – Creative Photography by Chanellé – Chanellé Harris

TTTThe photojournalistic art of Creative Photography by Chanellé was created in 2008. Chanellé studied

advanced photography at the University of Arlington (UTA), and currently has memberships in prestigious national photography associations. She also taught digital photography at UTA’s 2012 Upward Bound and courses for seniors in 2014. Furthermore, in conjunction with the Association of Grand Prairie Artists, she taught photography fundamentals to ex-offenders through the National Endowment for the Arts program.

CCCChanellé has notable prizes for her fine art, and her work is currently displayed in art festivals, galleries,

shows, international airports, and books. Her most noteworthy work has been featured in the JUST ENGAGED section in the national publication Essence Magazine online in July 2013 http://photos.essence.com/galleries/just-engaged-octavia-and-terrence More of Chanellé’s work can be seen at http://www.creativephotographybychanelle.com.

CCCChanellé will discuss her approach to photography, including the influence of an early exposure to art and

music and how music helps her convey “movement” and “feeling” in her artistry. She’ll examine how she brings her own artistry into the work she does for clients, who love her “eye” in capturing those sentimental, humorous, tender moments with a touch of creativity.

CCCChanellé will also talk about the technical side of her photography, including creating simulations of High

Dynamic Range (HDR) photography to add extra punch and her use of negative space.

Plano Photography Club’s Hidden Gem Beckons

PPPPlano Photography Club monthly contests are multi-purposed. Two of the many purposes are 1) To inspire

you to think outside your typical subject matter. 2) To allow your work to be judged by professional photographers in an unbiased manner which allow you to grow in your technique and creativity. However, speaking from personal experience these contests can be a pull-my-hair-out kind of moment when it comes to choosing ‘the right’ photo to submit.

TTTThe Plano Photography Club offers a service which on many occasions has prevented my

baldheadedness…yay!! I did not realize this very beneficial service is a little known secret until I was recently told I am the ONLY one using it on a regular basis! The service consists of e-mailing your monthly photo contenders to Plano Photography Club member Larry Petterborg at [email protected], he then forwards the photo(s) to Plano Photography Club Master Photographers. The Master Photographers reply to Larry, which he forwards to the club member who submitted the photo(s), with detailed tips of how to better your photograph. Sometimes these critiques include a post-production attachment of changes they recommend.

TTTTheir words have been harsh on occasion (“I'm not sure what the photographer is trying to convey to the

viewer. My first impression was great strength and pose, but after that there's nothing to keep my attention.”), however I would much rather suffer the harshness before I submit it to the competition than have to see my photo receive a 7 from the judge!

TTTTheir words have been kind and confidence building on other occasions ("This subject of this image seems

to me to be in sharp focus and well exposed. I like how the girl's hair is falling over one eye, and her expression shows her effort but also her pleasure in this pose. I find this to be an imaginative interpretation of the theme.”). Either way, it is their honest and professional opinion of which I am very grateful. If it was always positive or always negative I would have stopped knocking on their door a long time ago.

IIIIf you have been sitting in your seat at any Plano Photography Club meeting like I have hoping your

contest entry at least ranks in the double digits but are sadly disappointed it might be time to consult the Master Photographers before submission. Taking this step is not a guarantee you will walk away with back to back Best of Shows but if you heed their advice it increases your skills as a photographer, opens your eyes to wider pools of creativity and ups your chances to step into the head held high land of double digits.

President’s Message: Write for The Flash!

TTTThis month’s Flash! contains an excellent article by Karen Chaney describing one of the

services offered by the Club, from which she has benefited. Please read the article and plan to use the service she describes. I also would like to encourage you to consider contributing an article of your own to the Club newsletter. You may think, “What!? I’ve got nothing to say that Club members would find interesting,” but you might be surprised. Have you been to an unusual location where you got some great photos? Describe it for us! (And tell us how to get there.) Would you like to know more about some little-used feature of your camera? Take the time to learn, and then share a write-up of your new knowledge with the Club.

HHHHave you been able to use your camera in the service of your church or a community

organization? Tell us about the experience. Maybe you were lucky enough to get to talk with a famous photographer in person. Share that conversation! Did you participate in some activity with the Club that you thought was especially enjoyable or beneficial? Write up your thoughts,

and the rest of us may see that activity through fresh eyes. The article does not have to be very long. Karen’s is under 500 words. Not all of us are comfortable speaking in front of a group. Contributing an article to the Flash! would be a great way to communicate without that stress, and a great way to make the Club a better organization. - Sam Wilson
