31, 1517) of Luther defiantly nailing a copy of his
95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle
church.
Finally, I humbly ask for your prayers and support, as
well as I pray for the guiding hand of the Holy Spirit, as I
serve as Acting Council President.
Timothy J. Eskeli
From the President’s Desk
As many may know, Cara Brousseau
resigned as Church Council President
effective August 1st
. In addition, effective
August 1st,
the Church Council appointed me
as Acting Church Council President. I want
to thank Cara for her service as Council
President and her leadership thru a difficult
time in the Congregation. I have been
amazed and impressed by Cara’s deep
affection for our Congregation.
In the coming months I look forward to:
· Working with the Congregation and the
Church Council as we go through the
process of calling a new Pastor and
charting the future course for First
Lutheran. I would note that later in this
newsletter is an article on the Church
Council’s efforts to secure a permanent
pastor. The article updates where we
are currently in the process, where the
process is headed and the expected time
frame for calling a new “term” pastor.
· Working with Pastor Tennermann in his
role as Interim Pastor. Since his coming
on board in May, Pastor Tennermann
has provided us with leadership during
the banner burning incident and has
provided sage guidance to the Church
Council and has conducted two adult
forums that I hope were meaningful and
helpful to the Congregation.
· The upcoming fall liturgical season
which has the makings of being very
busy, beginning with “Rally Sunday” and
“Gods Work/Our Hands” on September
11th
, continuing with our annual German
“Wurst Festival" in October and the start
Pr Tennermann is offering
another adult forum!
It will be held after worship on
Sunday, September 18th
, 11:15 a.m.
in the library. Refreshments will be
served.
This forum will last about 45 minutes and the topic will
be: developing better communication and trying to work
for future growth.
Please sign up on the sheet outside Pastor's office. We
look forward to seeing you there! We need you to
participate!

Pastoral Vacancy Update
As previously discussed when a pastoral vacancy
occurs there are three options for providing for the
needs of a congregation until a permanent pastor is
called. The choices are:
· Ministry in Transition: A pastor (from another
church) and two lay people work together as the
congregation undergoes the call process.
· Intentional Pastor: A pastor is assigned to a
congregation for up to 18 months while the
congregation goes through a discernment and call
process.
· Term Call: A congregation goes through the call
process and a Pastor is call for an agreed to set
term—usually 2-3 years. Under the Term Call
process the congregation prepares a Ministry Site
Profile and establishes a call committee to interview
and recommend a prospective pastor. The call
committee’s recommendation would need both the
Church Council’s and Congregation’s approval.
Additionally after the term has ended, the Term
Pastor can be called for a permanent position.
With the resignation of Pastor Allie this spring, the
Church Council decided to pursue the Term Call option,
with the belief that this option was the fastest way to
move forward as a congregation. Additionally, in the
interim, the Council decided to appoint Pastor
Tennermann to serve a “Pastoral Leadership in
Transition” (PLT). The PLT provides pastoral coverage
until one of the options mentioned above is put into
place.
Over the summer the Church Council has been
working on preparing the Mission Site profile. Our
intention is to present a “draft” of the site profile to the
Congregation in the next couple of weeks, seek
Congregational input and hopefully publish it by the end
of September, beginning of October. At that point a call
committee will be established and a hopefully by
December/January a call can be issued.
I ask that the congregation continue to hold the
Church Council, Pastor Tennermann and each other in
our prayers as we proceed through this time of
transition.
Timothy J. Eskeli, President
Council Meeting Highlights July and August 2016
· Council accepted the resignation letter, with regret,
of Cara Brousseau as Council President. Tim Eskeli
will be President Pro-tem until the next
congregational meeting in December. He will assume
all duties of the president.
· Pastor Tennermann will hold 3 forums. July 24,
August 14 and September 18. These forums will
focus on First Lutheran’s future: “Learning to Walk
Together.”
· 2017 will be the 500th
Anniversary of the
Reformation. It was suggested that we celebrate this
in some way.
· Ministry Site Profile: Judy and Tim are working on
this with the input of council.
· The MSP will be handed out to the Congregation in
September for their ideas. Then once the MSP is
finished we hope to have this sent to Synod by the
end of September.
· Council will also form a Call committee of 6 members
in September, so they will be ready once Synod gives
us a candidate’s name. The committee will hopefully
be comprised of members from all voting age groups
in the congregation.
· Tim is meeting with the Damien Center once a
month so we can be aware of what is going in the
building being we have no Pastor in the building on a
regular basis.
· Locks in the building had to be changed due to keys
being stolen. So doors will not open with old keys.
· Congregational Life: Kim is planning activities for
members to get to know each other and First’s
history at the monthly dinners. October 23rd
is the
October Fest, November 20th
theme is Faith in Our
Church and December 18th
is the Christmas Dinner.
· Treasurer’s Report: The budget is status quo. We
have needed to sell more stocks to help cash flow.
Due to not having a pastor we are somewhat under
budget with our expenses.
· September 11th
is the opening of Sunday School. It is
also “God’s Work Our Hands” Sunday. We will honor
our first responders at the firehouse on Western and
Washington Ave with cards and lunches.
Sandy O’Connor, Council Secretary

Roberta Rowland-Raybold, Director of Music
My mother often quoted Galatians 6:9: “And let us
not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall
reap, if we faint not.” She had more serious
responsibilities than anyone I have ever known, but she
was faithful and never fainted at the tasks at hand. She
was a wonderful example to me. Sometimes we
become weary, but I hope that the summer has given
you time to relax a bit and look forward to a new season
at First Lutheran Church.
During summer worship we have enjoyed some
guest musicians, talented folks from our own
congregation, and our summer pick-up choir. We will
enjoy the summer choir once more on September 11th
,
so if you have enjoyed our easy anthems, join us on that
Sunday at 9:15 to learn a quick, easy, fun anthem. My
thanks to each of you who helped make our summer
music program so inspirational.
Chancel Choir will begin fall rehearsals on Thursday,
September 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. We will
welcome new members who would like to try us out
this year. Watch for announcement in the October
newsletter for a special Saturday morning Choir Retreat
at which we will begin preparation for Advent and
Christmas music. Childrens’ Intergenerational Choir
will resume this fall and will be preparing music for
special occasions in the church year. This has been a
new and great blessing to our congregation.
We have two special groups that will be starting in
October, Choir Chimes (The Chancel Ringers) and XYZ
Choir (Xtra Years of Zest). Be on the lookout for
information on both of these new groups.
If you are looking for an autumn day that will be
really special, mark Saturday, September 10 on your
calendars. This is the 6th
Annual Stockade Art Show in
the historic Stockade District. St. George’s Episcopal
Church opens the doors of its historic old church and
presents half-hour organ recitals from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
I have been invited to be one of the presenters and have
decided on a “jazzy repertoire!” So, spend the day
viewing beautiful, creative works of art along the streets
of the Stockade, and stop in at St. George’s for a relaxing
few minutes of music.
Sunday, September 25 at 4:00 will be the final
seasonal concert at the Old Palatine Church in St.
Johnsville, NY. This early fall program is a variety show,
with young people and adults from the Mohawk Valley
who have great talent to share. If you have wanted to
visit the historic site, this would be a lovely Sunday
afternoon drive.

FLC Community Dinners The September Community Dinner will be held on Monday, September 26
th, at 6:00, in Wittenberg Hall. After a successful
summer of picnics, it is time to move indoors. We have averaged about 90 people in the summer and 89 for the year. A few
people from the dinners have attended our church regularly this year. The Damien Center staff and volunteers have assisted us
with many of these dinners and some of their clients have become regular attendees. At the end of each dinner, neighbors and
members are invited to take free food home that we have purchased or received from the Regional Food Bank, as well as
clothing provided by the Damien Center thrift shop. We would like to have more FLC members involved with distributing flyers
to our neighbors, sorting clothing, set-up, serving and clean-up, as well as visiting with our neighbors during the dinners. YOU
ARE ALL INVITED TO ATTEND THIS FREE EVENT.
It takes many people to make dinners like this a success, and they all deserve our thanks.
· Liz Peters is fantastic at food ordering and purchasing. She and Chuck have made countless trips to the Regional Food
Bank, supplemented by shopping at several of our local supermarkets.
· Alex Nagy is available for dinners, helping us at every turn with all of the practical aspects of running a dinner. Some of
our guests have helped him break down the tables after the dinners.
· Lisa Rittberger, Sandy O’Connor, Clara DeMarco, Liz Peters and Janice Logan organized and prepared the summer
dinners.
· Colin McKnight, Pastor Greg Tennermann, Carol and Ed Engelhardt, Kim Paonessa, Sue Harper, Chuck Peters, Barbara
McGuinness, Sara Carlson, Daniel Washington, Wayne Senitta, John Lasher, Trevor Cody, Raoull DePass, Claire Brockley,
Andre Akins, Kevin Taft, Ariayna Taliafero, Megan Bouyea and family have all assisted with various aspects of making
the dinners enjoyable for everyone. (If I missed anyone’s name, please let me know.)
We thank you, one and all!

Luther Movie & Pot-Luck
Dinner Pastor Dave Preisinger pastor of Holy
Spirit Lutheran said that during this
program year they will hold monthly
events on various topics, Immigration,
racism, Luther (500th
Anniversary).
Pastor Dave and the members of Holy
Spirit are inviting members of the other Cluster churches to
participate in these special events.
The first of these is a Potluck dinner/Movie night on
October 5th. We will begin with a meal (potluck) at 6 PM.
Following dinner we will watch the movie together. This is
the story of Martin Luther and the Protestant reformation
which started October 31, 1517, five hundred years ago next
year.
If you would like to come to this dinner/movie event,
please sign up on the bulletin board across from the pastor’s
office. You may also call the church office to sign up.
Homeless Action Center Sandwiches
Throughout the year, twice a month, we have been
providing the Homeless Action Center (HAC) with 50
sandwiches, which are distributed to homeless people
throughout the city by the HAC van. The staff and clients of
HAC are very grateful for the sandwiches that our church
provides.
Over the summer, individuals signed up to make these
sandwiches. Thank you for your participation in this
important outreach program: Sara and Judy Carlson, Carol
and Ed Engelhardt, Judy and Joan Greenwood, Barbara
McGuinness, June and Cliff Danielson, Barbara Mojeca
(twice) and Janice Logan. Many thanks also to Liz Peters for
purchasing some of the supplies.
Once again, we need volunteers to make sandwiches in
the fall. Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board
across from the pastor’s office. We are thankful for your
dedication to feeding the homeless.
God’s Work – Our Hands 2016
This year's God's Work - Our Hands project will take
place on Sunday, September 11th. The ELCA has suggested
that, since the day falls on September 11th
, we might do
something to demonstrate our gratitude toward our first
responders. We will benefit our local fire station, by
providing lunch for them (and their colleagues who are on
subsequent shifts) and the children will make them cards,
thanking them for their service. This can involve everyone,
including our Sunday School children. The fire company said
they could give a tour of the station, if they aren’t on a call at
the time. If you have any questions, please contact Janice
Logan at 437-1121 or [email protected]. There is a sign-
up sheet to bring food on the bulletin board across from the
Pastor’s office. Join us for an hour or two of fellowship,
work and fun, utilizing our hands to accomplish God's work
in our community.
Albany CROP Walk 2016
The final report of the 2016 Albany CROP Walk brings
good news! The total raised was $85,843.75 this year,
pushing the cumulative total since 1981 to over two million
dollars. First Lutheran provided 22 walkers and contributed
$1,045 toward the total. 25% of the money raised returns to
our local food pantries and soup kitchens, while the rest is
used for hunger relief and development projects around the
world. Thank you to all who walked and contributed to this
vital program!
Kids Free Summer Lunch Program
This summer, the Capital Area Council of Churches
offered free lunches to children in Albany from June 28th
through August 11th. Two vans delivered lunches on the
streets of Arbor Hill and the South End. The vans delivered
up to 200 meals per day. First Lutheran Church was a
permanent site where neighborhood children and teens
could also come for a lunch. We served 3-11 lunches each
day. All lunches were made by the Senior Services program.
At the heart of the FLC portion of this program were the
volunteers who distributed the lunches from 11:30 to 12:30
by the picnic tables. Without them, this endeavor couldn't
have happened. We want to thank each and every one of
them. The volunteers are listed below by their home
churches:
• First Lutheran Church
Sue Harper, Janice Logan, Sandy O'Connor,
Dee Morton and Nancy Wilson. Also Alex
Nagy and Kevin Taft for setting up for the
lunches.
• First United Universalist Society of Albany -
Astrid Petterson
• Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit

• St. John Lutheran Church

Drivers Needed!
Our transportation team is in search
of more drivers to pick up and drop
off members of FLC that can’t get to
church any other way.
Depending on the number of volunteers we have will
determine the commitment that will be required. If we
have a total of eight drivers, each person on the team
would only drive six times a year! Since we do not have
a van anymore, you will be using your own vehicle to
transport.
Please speak to Julie in the church office about your
interest in this vital ministry at First Lutheran.
