Grand Knight’s Greeting

The Father Funcken Council #1504 & Assembly

Easter is a very special time of year. It is a time to reflect

on the past and to look forward to a new beginning.

Our council members continue to keep busy having member-

ship drives; looking after the poor, such as continuing to

serve at the Out of the Cold Program held at St. Matthews

Church; and most recently hosting a spaghetti dinner with

the help of the C.W.L. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Hope-

fully we can assist at other churches, to help them raise

monies for their parishes and to bring more awareness of

the good work that the Knights do.

We continue to meet at Blessed Sacrament Church on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the

month for our executive and general meetings, and all card-carrying members are

welcome. I offer a very special thank-you to our chaplain, Father Lobsinger, who has

guided us spiritually and helped to give us direction and support. The relocation

committee continues to be faithful in their search in finding us a new home, and I

applaud them and their committee for their dedication.

This past winter we also had the honour and privilege of hosting Our Lady of Guada-

lupe at five of our thirteen council parishes. There were about three hundred people

who came out to participate and pray for Our Lady, as the Knights of Columbus em-

barked on a pilgrimage across Canada and the United States bringing her image

from council to council, parish to parish to spread her message and love.

Council will be voting in a new executive in May at the General meeting. Come out

and support your brother Knights by casting your vote or, better yet, having your

name put forward for a position on the executive. As I look back at my past two-year

term, I would like to say it has been an honour and a privilege to have served as

Grand Knight and to have met such fine brother Knights and the opportunity to

work with an executive who is truly committed. I have also had the opportunity in

promoting Charity, Unity and Fraternity that our founder Father Michael J.

McGivney had established long ago. As everyone knows the key to a successful coun-

cil is an active membership. I have no doubt that the next Grand Knight and execu-

tive will continue to do so.

From my family to yours, have a Happy Easter Season.

God Bless,

James Padgett Grand Knight, Council 1504

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

for the next ECHO:

June 1st, 2012

My Brother Knights,

As you may already know, this is my last Chaplain’s Report since I am being transferred to

St. Thomas Parish in Waterdown in June. For the past seven years it has been my privilege

to serve as your Chaplain. The support, friendship and Priestly respect you have shown me

has helped me to be a more confident man and hopefully a holier Priest. Thank you for your

many kindnesses.

The Kitchener Council of the Knights of Columbus is a vibrant and active council. Many of

you give of yourself and your talents to a degree that is heroic. Please know, God sees all the efforts you make for

His Church and His people and He will reward you a hundred fold in His Kingdom.

The Knights of Columbus’ main role, in my opinion, must continue to be the holiness of its members. All we do

from the monthly meeting, the charitable works, Everyday Heroes, bingo, car draws, social events, etc., etc., etc.,

must be solely for the purpose to build God’s Kingdom on earth and prepare ourselves for the fullness of His King-

dom in Heaven. Always try to remember, everything we do as Knights of Columbus is for the glory of God and the

building of His Kingdom.

For those of you who have been and are actively involved in the works of the Knights of Columbus, keep up the

great work you are doing. I encourage all our many members to become involved in the good works of the Knights,

to actively build the Kingdom of God through this truly Catholic organization.

Once again, thank you for allowing me the honour to serve as your chaplain for the past seven years. God bless

you all and your families. I remain,

Yours in Christ,

Father W. L. Lobsinger Chaplain

VOLUME 7, ISSUE 3 THE ECHO PAGE 3

At the time of this writing we have completed our third of 5 weeks that we are scheduled to

sell Cars Draw tickets at Stanley Park Mall, or about 60% through our annual campaign.

I am very pleased to report that we have not only matched our total sales from last year, but

have surpassed them to the point that we have had to attain more tickets to sell. This is ex-

tremely good news for the charities that directly benefit from this draw, but also the charities

that our council supports locally, and our council as well.

The success we are experiencing this year can be attributed to many factors, such as the nice weather and general-

ly more optimistic financial times, as well the new format of selling these tickets at 3 for only $5. But the biggest

two reasons, in my opinion, are the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, and the great display vehicles we

have had. Here I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave their time this year, it is greatly appreciated. I

would also like to thank Weiland Ford for the great display vehicles they provided.

This is definitely the last chance this year to purchase tickets, so if you were interested in purchasing you can see

us at Stanley Park Mall the week of April 9th to 14th and the final week April 23rd to the 28th. I can also arrange to

deliver tickets to you, especially if you would be interested in selling a few books, you can contact me at 519-957-

1083 or send me an e-mail to [email protected]. But hurry — once they are gone, they are gone.

“Tempus Fugit,” as you brother knights can recall, means “Time Flies.” Yes

it sure does and we are getting closer to our next Fourth Degree Exemplifi-

cation. I know I mentioned it in our last issue of the Echo, but again be-

cause of its importance to you our 3rd Degree members and the 4th Degree

Assembly, I am making note of it again.

Our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson once said Charity, Unity and Fraternity lead to Patri-

otism, the principle of the Fourth Degree. Any Third Degree member in good standing, six months after the anni-

versary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. Our meetings are held on the 2nd

Tuesday of each month at Knights of Columbus Council 5135, 145 Dearborn Place in Waterloo at 7:30 p.m.

We are looking forward to several Third Degree members this year joining us and becoming members of the Fourth

Degree. Our next exemplification of the Fourth Degree will be held in St. Catharine’s on June 2, 2012. Registra-

tion must be completed and sent in by May 24th. There will also be a ladies program and the Exemplification Ban-

quet will begin at 6:30 p.m. If you require any information or assistance please contact any member of our Fourth

Degree Assembly, or I can be contacted at 519-743-6647, cell 519-572-0256, or [email protected].

We now have a new member and would also like to welcome Sir Knight Christopher Pugh who just recently trans-

ferred from Manitoba and joined our Assembly.

Please remember in your prayers the following deceased Sir Knights who departed from families and us in 2012:

S.K. Jim Goodyear, and P.G.K., P.F.N., F.D.D. Joe Centi.

Rolling into the playoffs...

Barring a near miraculous surge or decline, it would appear that the mid-season form being shown by the Advocates will

keep them exactly where they are right now – in first place. That shocking revelation to the fans and players of the Knights

of Columbus Wednesday Bowling League – since the loss of captain and currently on medical leave league President Flynn

Reaume – has dramatically wounded the moral of his former high-flying squad, the Trustees, which are in a heated battle

just to remain in third place in the 12-team league.

His absence has also allowed the Knights to take a solid hold of second place – and maybe the only thing standing between

an end-of-the-season coronation of the Advocates as the top squad. The Knights sit less than 20 points behind the top ranked

Advocates at the time of this writing with the end of March madness fast approaching. In the heated battle for third are the

surprising Secretaries, which have swayed back and forth with the Trustees by a half point over a three week stretch. And

not to be left out, are the up and coming Grands nipping at the heels in fifth place. The run for the sixth and final spot in the

A Division playoff scheme are the Wardens – but things have been getting increasingly difficult for all squads to find ways

to garner points which means the seventh place Chancellors (contenders for the top spot of the B Division playoffs) could

ease into a new playoff role before the season officially ends.

The Deputies, despite some exceptional late February and early March games, still trail in eighth, followed in the too-close-

to-call race by the Lecturers. Taking the last three spots are the contending rebuilders for next season: the Treasurers, the

Guards, and the Squires – all looking to play spoiler in the B Division playoffs.

This is money ball at its finest – despite not having a Brad Pitt kicking around the lanes these days. And points and pins are

harder to come by than ever before – just ask Chris Banasch, who was a mere five points away from unseating reining High

Single with Handicap leader Michael Detzler. Banasch, with a 351, just could not come closer to Detzler’s 356 and managed

to climb over another close competition – Peter Leduc, with his sizzling 349.

But there was an upset in the making as Philip Schmaus knocked out overwhelming crowd favourite and all-round good

guy, Mike “Lefty” George – with a dazzling 770 High Triple without Handicap. Lefty had been hanging around most of the

season with a 731 – difficult to beat at the best of times but it was obvious that Schmaus had no intentions of sharing prize

money this season. Steve Klatecki hit lofty marks as well, eking out a 704 – and remember folks, these are scores over three

games without handicaps, which, at the same time, ruins the handicap they are desperately trying to keep inflated for when

they have three “bad” games.

As the league enters into its playoff mode at the end of March, it should be noted that its successes have been huge – attract-

ing new entrants and players over the past two years, but, as it has been said by the executive, there is always room for

more. Interested? Look for notification in future pages of this fine publication. - Flynn Reaume

2012 Trip Draw Winners!

We would like to congratulate all the winners and thank everyone who participated in this years draw. We look forward to seeing you again next year. The total number of tickets sold this year was 361.

This year our Annual Trip Draw saw some changes. Some sellers retired meaning we had a lot of Brothers selling more and others selling for the first time. I am happy to report that we sold 9 more tickets than we did last year: 361 compared with 352. I had some comments about the fact that we printed 500 tickets; this was done so we could spread more tickets around, and with more people selling we had hoped to reach 400. It did not happen, but we are moving in the right direction. For all those who sold and bought, Council 1504 thanks you for your efforts. So far we have donated to St. Vincent de Paul, The House of Friendship and St. John’s Kitchen.

For next year’s Trip Draw, Brothers, I am looking for suggestions, such as, when would you like the draw to take place? And where would you like the trip or trips to go? Please ask your good ladies as they usually have good suggestions, and let’s see if we can make it better. We need new sellers. Please call or e-mail me if you are interested. The Trip Draw is one of Council’s major fundraisers and we depend on it to help fund our charity work.

Spaghetti Lunch On March 25th, our council, in conjunction with the Cath-olic Women's League, hosted a Spaghetti Lunch at Blessed Sacrament Church. This event raised over $600 dollars for the parish and gave the parishioners a chance to come together as a community. The event was a rous-ing success thanks to the great food, good company and helpful volunteers.

Fr. Anthoy Raj began with saying grace, and then it was off to the races. Heaping plates of spaghetti, cooked to perfection, were served along side fresh rolls and a choice of salads. The sauce was made by the culinary students at St. David's who managed to rival the best of restaurants. There was coffee, tea, juice and pop to quench the palate. Much to the delight of the kids in at-tendance (and some of the adults, too), there was a de-sert bar with brownies and many different kinds of ice cream.

The spaghetti lunch was also a chance to meet some new people and get to know the faces that you recognize from Mass. A meal brings people together in a unique way, providing a relaxing environment to forge new friendships or foster existing ones. And there was even live entertainment! Yes folks, Elvis was in the building.

A big thanks goes out to all of the volunteers whose work made this event go through smoothly. Your efforts were much appreciated.

We plan to run more spaghetti lunches at other parishes, so stay tuned for future announcements and don't miss your chance to partake! And congratulations to Erwin Banasch for his win of $127.50 in the 50/50 draw.
