Grand Knight’s Greeting

The Father Funcken Council #1504 & Assembly

Changes...

Look who made the front page? Yes, I know, making the front

page of the Echo is not exactly the same as making the front page

of The Record, in fact it could be a good thing depending on why

you are there. It can only mean we had our council elections and

now I have the honour and privilege to serve as Grand Knight as

we transition into the new fraternal year. This year in particular

our council begins with many changes; a potentially exciting period

in our council’s history.

Probably the biggest change this year is the news that we are losing our Chaplain, Fr.

Wayne Lobsinger, as he moves to his new parish in Waterdown. We are ever thankful

for his support, guidance and service to our council. Our council will dearly miss him and

we wish him all the best and will keep him in our prayers. Entering the new fraternal

year we are very fortunate to welcome Fr. Peter Meyer from St. Anne’s Parish as our

new Chaplain. For those that may not know him we have included a brief bio in this is-

sue. He will be a great addition to our council and look forward to many spiritually ful-

filling years as our Chaplain.

We have also received word that our Insurance Agent, Mac Graham, has made the very

difficult decision to take his career solo. Though disappointing, we wish Mac all the best.

Our Financial Secretary can direct our members on any insurance issues until new ar-

rangements are made. Also our relocation committee is still working hard on finding a

new home, and is making terrific strides in their mandate. It may not be much longer

before we will have a new facility. We will be sure to notify the membership as soon as

anything develops.

Our council’s next big event is not until September 9th, which is our annual Golf Tourna-

ment. This has been a growing and successful event over the last couple of years as we

raise funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation. We are hoping to make this year’s event

the biggest ever. I encourage all members to consider participating, and do not forget to

include family friends and neighbors to play, even if you are not a golfer. It is a fun way

to make a difference.

As we enter the summer months, I want to wish all our members and their families a safe

and enjoyable season. I plan on working hard with my new executive for what looks like

a busy fall when we once again get into the swing of council activity. We will continue to

have our General Meetings in the summer for everyone to stay current with plans and

activities, and if anyone is looking for something to do, our Wednesday Night Baseball is

back.

Have a Great Summer.

God Bless,

Sept. 1st, 2012

Dear Brother Knights,

I was born May 31, 1961, the youngest of four children. I attended

Our Lady of Lourdes elementary school, then to St. David High School

and finished my high school years at St. Jerome's High School.

In the early1980's, I attended Ryerson Polytechnical School for Hospi-

tality Management. I completed my college years at University of Wa-

terloo.

Before entering the seminary, I worked for the Independent Living

Center of Waterloo Region and in the hospitality industry.

I attended St. Augustine Seminary in Toronto for five years and was

ordained to the priesthood in 1999.

I have served in parishes in Ancaster, Burlington, Guelph, Oakville, Sau-

geen Shores and in Hamilton.

I am presently the pastor of St. Anne Parish in Kitchener.

My father was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus and my

brother was a squire.

I am looking forward to serving as the chaplain for the Kitchener Council.

You and your families will be in my prayers.

We had a very successful campaign locally this year. We ended up selling just over 5000

tickets at Stanley Park Mall and to members at meeting and various other events, which

equates to well over $8000 worth of tickets. For a complete list of winners, visit the Ontario

State Council’s website at: www.osc-koc.com/Raffle.html. Though I must report that we

were shut out again and did not end up selling a winning ticket.

The success of this campaign can mostly be attributed to the commitment, dedication and hard work of all the vol-

unteers that manned our display at Stanley Park Mall. I want to thank all of them with sincere appreciation and

gratitude. Also want to thank Wieland Ford & Galt Chrysler Dodge for supplying the display vehicles at the mall,

it without a doubt made the difference where we sold close to 900 more tickets this year over last. We also cannot

miss mentioning Stanley Park Mall that provided space for 5 weeks at no cost to aide our cause, and their staff for

their support. And of course to all our customers who purchased tickets, without you there is not campaign. I hope

we can count on your continued support next year.

Next year our new Deputy Grand Knight Kevin Morrissey will be assum-

ing the chair of this campaign. I wish him all the best, I hope he will con-

tinue with this campaigns success and takes it to new heights.

Thank You Again,

Council 1504's annual Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday September 9th at Rebel Creek Golf and Country Club. You will notice that this year there are some changes: Brother Bill Jackson and Conestoga Foods (after many years of Bill running the event with some help from myself and Conestoga Foods catering the event) have decided to step down. I know I speak for the membership when I say thanks Ron and Bill for all the effort you have put in over the years.

So what does this mean? It means that we need help in organizing this event. We need prizes and we need sponsors to make sure this event is a success — that we can help a child make his or her wish come true.

2012 TRIP DRAW This year our Annual Trip Draw saw some changes, some sellers retired meaning we had a lot of Brothers selling more and others selling for the first time. I am happy to re-port that we sold 9 more tickets than we did last year (361 compared with 352).

I had some comments about printing 500 tickets ($100 each). This was done so we could spread more tickets around, and with more people selling we had hoped to reach 400 — it did not happen but we are moving in the right direction.

For all those who sold and bought Council 1504 thank you for your efforts. So far we have donated to St. Vincent de Paul, The House of Friendship and St. Johns Kitchen.

KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS ...

Please remember in your prayers the good health of the following Brother Knights and their spouses...

Chuck Bondy ▪ Roger & Pat Cann ▪ Patrick Cann ▪ Alfredo & Marie Helena daSilva ▪ Harry & Rita Gregory ▪

Archie Hummel ▪ John Jackson ▪ Charlie McEvoy ▪ Fr. Terry McGuire ▪ Carl Metz ▪ Jean-Paul Munroe ▪

Simon & Mary Nolan ▪ Bob Orazek ▪ Flynn & Betty Reaume ▪ Wilbert & Theresa Reinhart ▪ Gerry Schell ▪

Carl & Therese Schuett ▪ Andrew Tulecki

All praise and glory are yours, Lord our God. For you have called us to serve you and one another in love.

Bless those who have grown in your service and give them courage and strength in their faith. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

If any member knows of any Brother Knight who needs our prayers and spiritual support,

As we end another fraternal year I would like to thank you brother Knights for YOUR support of the Council events that

were organized over the past 12 months.

The Children's Christmas Party was a great success, and the Golf Tournament raised thousands of dollars for the Chil-

dren's Wish Foundation. The Family Appreciation Day was well attended, family is what it is all about! Again this

year Brother Dave Obermeyer and his committee raised the bar and created more activities for you and your children

to enjoy.

2012 was also the year of the first Parish Spaghetti Lunch / Dinner. We plan to hold two in the fall and two in the spring

of 2013. If you would like to see Council support an activity or project in your parish please contact me at

[email protected] or 519-742-0908 and we will make it happen. We want to be out into the community and be seen

more than just on Rose Sunday. Do you know we visit the children in Grand River Hospital a minimum of once every

month to deliver games, toys, books to the children who are sick or need support like the young adults who may be suf-

fering from mental illness? This group of Knights and Kitchener Fire Fighters donate several hours every month and,

building on the success of this program, we are now going outside the hospital to other groups and families in the com-

munity who may be in need.

Unfortunately 2012 was another year when record numbers of people were living on the streets of our city — thank you

to the many brother Knights who came out to help with the Out-of-the-Cold program. As a member you should be proud

of your brother Knights who helped to feed 130 to 150 people in about 3 hours. Also from the charity money we raise at

the BINGO and other events we as a council supplied and served 30 large pizzas on two occasions to adults and children

who may not have had any food for several days.

At the June Foundation meeting some suggestions that will be followed up on are: Council to do a MOVEMBER for pros-

tate cancer awareness, a BBQ on a Sunday after mass in some parishes, look into supporting Special Olympics by spon-

soring one or more people to attend the Knights of Columbus Blue Jays Day on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Get back to me

if you would like to be involved.

Finally I would like to thank the Grand Knight Jim Padgett for his support to the committee over the past two years.

Jim attended many foundation meeting and events. Please remember the foundation committee are in place for your

benefit — all suggestions and ideas are welcome. We meet the second Saturday of every month at 10:00 a.m. in Blessed

Sacrament Church.

OUR EVERYDAY HEROES! Our Everyday Heroes is starting to really build mo-mentum. We have our loyal group of volunteers that visit the children and teens at Grand River Hospital every 2 to 3 weeks with representatives of the Kitchener Fire Department. Our goal has been to bring a smile to their faces and try to make their stay in the hospital less traumatic. We also had a table set up at the Kitchener Fire De-partment Open house on June 10th. Our goal there was to make the public aware of what we do and that we are all donation-driven. We raised over $500 from donations and selling of our special t-shirts which will go toward toys and other things for the kids. We would like to thank the Catholic Education Center Pastoral team for organizing a dress down campaign that raised over $600 for our cause.

If you or your company are interested in donating or would like more information please contact [email protected]

Co-Chair, Our Everyday Heroes

A Special Thank You...

As your new Past Grand Knight, I would like to take this opportunity to thank publicly the Bin-

go chairs, Joe Sutherland and Norm Brown as they have retired as bingo chairpeople. A spe-

cial thank you for their many, many years of dedicated service to the organizing and running of

the bingos.

Without the commitment of these fine Brother Knights and their volunteers, council 1504

would not have had available monies to give to various charities in our community. So over

their many, many years of continued service, they have raised over a million dollars to help our

community and the less fortunate.

God Bless,

2nd Annual ‘Family Appreciation Day’ a wonderful affair ...

On Saturday, June 23rd 2012, the Kitchener Knights of Columbus hosted their second annual Family Ap-

preciate Day at the Waterloo Regional Police Association Complex and Grounds. Once again this was an

absolutely free event open to all Kitchener K of C members and their families. The purpose of this day was

simply to bring together brother Knights and their families to enjoy a fun-filled day of fellowship and fami-

ly time.

The Lord blessed the over 85 attendees with a gorgeously warm and sunny summer day. Those attending

this occasion enjoyed a host of leisure activities including swimming, snacking, games, professional face

painting, all day BBQ, family movie and roaring bonfire. The event finale was a wonderful fireworks dis-

play in the warm evening air. Many also took time to stroll the grounds and enjoy some welcomed rest and

relaxation. As the day unfolded many attending provided encouraging feedback on what a wonderful time

they were having and for many, the day ultimately took on a true ‘family reunion’ type atmosphere.

The planning committee would like to take this time to thank all who attended for your positive support.

We are so glad you enjoyed yourself. Truth is...we did too! To our brother Knight families who were unable

to attend...don’t fret; next year’s Family Appreciation Day will be just as grand! Finally, to those who

helped plan and run this joyous affair, a special note of gratitude for your commitment at making this day

what it was.

Fraternally yours,

Brother Dave Obermeyer

... and a good time was had by all!

A New Home for Kitchener Knights of Columbus Council 1504

We are pleased to announce that Council 1504 has found its new home at 797 Guelph Street in Kitche-

ner.

After almost two-and-a-half years of searching for a premises that would suit the needs for K of C activi-

ties, the Relocation Committee was successful in its quest. Following several days of real estate negotia-

tions and meetings with the City of Kitchener to obtain approval documents and a building inspection,

the K of C will take possession of our new property on August 30, 2012.

The property offers exciting possibilities which Council can utilize to carry out its charitable work. As

the closing date approaches and Council takes possession, further details will be forthcoming.

Committee members Brian Hughes, Dave Obermeyer, Brian Schmalz, Reinhart Schreiter and Gary Meg-

affin would like to thank those who regularly provided leads for the Committee to investigate. Perhaps

prayers to St. Jude and St. Anthony were indeed heard.
