Rooflight Remains A Stunning Feature Ten Years On

4 I

This eloquent penthouse suite is situated amongst the white stucco Georgian houses of Knightsbridge, London.Surrounded by streams of private gardens, lavish restaurants and shops, the location couldn’t be more suitable for such a luxurious building design.

Whilst one floor is designed for suitable family living with a kitchen, breakfast and lounge room, the top floor consists of an open-plan space for entertainment and fine dining. Part of the design brief was to provide an open air dining space from within the confines of the

building, with the option to close this off and make the room beneath completely weather tight. Maintaining high levels of natural daylight was also a factor so the clients turned to architectural rooflight specialists Glazing Vision to come up with a solution.

As the layout of the flat roof above also featured a substantial length of fixed glazing to be installed very close to the proposed location of the rooflight, options were limited in terms of available space in which to safely install the product. Glazing Vision have a wealth

of experience with this type of project and recommended a bespoke design which allowed a 100% clear opening by retracting two glass sections independently in a sliding stacking arrangement.

This configuration maintains a minimal footprint on the roof as the glass only takes up half of the adjacent roof space to the actual opening when fully retracted. Originally installed in 2004, the dimensions of the

rooflight measure 3544mm x 2960mm, so with over 10m2 of glazing in place the positive impact this rooflight has on the building becomes apparent as soon as you see it.

Over 10 years later, open or closed, this bespoke rooflight continues to provide a stunning focal point to complement lavish project. www.glazingvision.co.uk

Reynaers At Home Presents Suite Of Hypoallergenic Designer Handles: Purity

4

Reynaers at Home’s range of hypoallergenic designer handles – Purity – is proving more popular than ever thanks to stunning aesthetics, durability and innovative material and coating. For the design and development of Purity, Reynaers at Home joined forces with the Italian designer Leo De Carlo, who worked for Philippe Starck’s agency in Paris for several years. He drew inspiration from his home town of Venice for Purity’s innovative and minimalist design.Leo De Carlo said: “Reynaers is known for its technical competence, attention to detail and environmental awareness. The material used in Purity is a compatible alloy, which doesn’t contain any toxic elements, such as lead, nickel or chrome. What’s more, it is made using a production process that ties into Reynaers’ environmental credentials.”Purity handles are crafted using a recently developed, highly durable alloy called PURA™ and advanced technology makes it possible for it

to be protected. The handles are coated using an innovative production process called BIOV™ (Bioecologic Ion Overlay). This is an evolution of the old PVD coating process, which requires no galvanic chrome, doesn’t produce toxic waste and means the designer handles are 100% recyclable. The surface hardness is more than double that of a standard surface treatment and the corrosion resistance is on a par with that of the highest quality stainless steel. Even more impressive is the fact that the coating is hypoallergenic. Available in a range of three striking standard colours, plus five more available on demand, the Purity handles are suited across a range of Reynaers at Home doors. www.reynaersathome.co.uk

Promuseum Helps French Multi-Media Library Open A New Chapter With Guardian Clarity™ Anti-Reflective Glass

The Médiathèque Pierre Amalric d’Albi (Albi Médiathèque) houses many rare, valuable and historical books. In early 2015, the library wanted an impressive, seven-meter-long showcase to house the contents of a major new exhibition that was due to open this fall. Albi Médiathèque Director Jocelyne Deschaux found the solution with Guardian Clarity™ glass with help from Promuseum, a supplier specialized in sourcing materials and equipment for museums, public spaces and cultural sites. With more than 25 years of experience, Promuseum, based in Rosny-sur-Seine, France, is a global designer of museum showcases that enhance, as well as protect and conserve, precious collections. “Guardian Clarity anti-relfective glass met the museum’s three conditions for the showcase: preservation, aesthetics and value for money,” said Mrs. Deschaux.Mrs. Deschaux connected with Promuseum to discuss the project. “I wanted an airtight showcase with laminated and anti-glare glass that complies with AFNOR standards to exhibit illustrations and photographic collections,” she explained. Given the amount of natural light in that part of the library, and hence the likelihood of glare and reflection off the display case, Promuseum recommended Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass

as the ideal solution for this installation. Last year, Promuseum met with Guardian Industries’ Glass Group in Europe to develop a range of showcases using Guardian Clarity™ anti-reflective glass. This followed an extensive search by Promuseum staff to find a high-quality solution that would allow museums to provide a perfect view of their collections behind glass.“The Albi Médiathèque did not know about Guardian Clarity glass,” said Juliette Bourdillon, Promuseum General Director. Guardian Integrator Manager David Allouche provided samples and technical support to explain the advantages of Guardian Clarity glass. ”Promuseum believes in this glass and we felt it was the ideal solution for the Albi Médiathèque. They decided to give it a try.” Promuseum built a seven-meter-long display case mounted wall to wall, with the entire front using Guardian Clarity glass. The Guardian Clarity glass enables a light transmission of 97% and a reflection of less than 1%, compared to architectural float glass, which offers a light transmission of 90% and has a reflection of 8%. Guardian Clarity glass was developed by considering the demanding needs for optical performance within the museum display segment. www.guardian.com

Metal Technology The Right Solution For British Golf Museum

Curtain walling, door and window systems from Metal Technology have been integral in achieving the aesthetic and performance objectives for the redevelopment of the British Golf Museum at St. Andrew’s. Richard Murphy Architects’ design transformed the existing building into a modern architecturally award-winning structure. The stunning views over the course are facilitated through Metal Technology System 4-20Hi+ thermally enhanced casement windows, combined with System 17 high rise, capped curtain walling. The design also features the System 5-20D Hi+ thermally enhanced door and the System 10 commercial door.System 17 Curtain Walling not only provides structural integrity with high levels of thermal and weather performance but offers limitless flexibility in specification to meet the visual and performance requirements for any building. In a design that featured expansive glazing, thermal performance was, in part, achieved through the use of window and door Systems 4-20Hi+ and 5-20D Hi+ from the Metal Technology [THERMAL] range, which incorporates into its systems bespoke thermal gaskets, cellular foams and polyamide thermal isolators to achieve impressively low U values without compromise on visual appeal. The finished project was unveiled in time for the British Open of 2015. www.metaltechnology.com

ESG Brightens Up New Tottenham Court Road Station

ESG, the UK’s largest independent glass processor, has recently continued its work for Transport for London by supplying the glass for the 2nd phase of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube station.

The station is currently undergoing a multi-billion pound refit as part of the new Crossrail link due to open in 2018. The entire station was closed at the start of the project and is now reopening one section at a time. Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened and revealed a, Daniel Buren designed and ESG manufactured, black and white artwork printed onto glass.

Recently the new Center Point entrance has opened to the public and the walls continue Daniels design. However for this section of the station, the black and

white has been fused together with colour to create striking geometrical shapes. ESG supplied over 150m² of toughened laminated glass split over 200 pieces.

The coloured and black sections of the design were digitally printed and UV cured to the glass. To ensure maximum ink adhesion to the glass each panel was treated to an ESG developed pre-print wash treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This treatment enables all of the printing to achieve BSI: ISO2409 adhesion standard.

The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened low iron and then laminated, with a white Vanceva interlayer to achieve the background, to create the 17.5mm toughened laminated final product. The final design is already receiving plaudits from the public as to how bright and modern the new look station is.www.esg.glass – 01376 520061

VS-1 Curtain Walling Delivers For Flagship Sky Project

Speed of construction and superb aesthetics, coupled with very high technical demands, were crucial in meeting the exacting requirements of media giant Sky as it realised its ambition to create an industry leading community engagement and educational facility at its West London campus. The VS-1 curtain walling system from GLASSOLUTIONS held the key to meeting this dual challenge for the ‘Believe in Better’ Building, given the glazing system simplicity and its ability to easily span large heights with clean, unbroken sightlines.

The 3,000m2 timber framed building, developed by Sky, in conjunction with Mace, houses a wide variety of educational and community facilities, including the Sky Academy at which young people can use the power of creativity, television and sport to develop new skills and unlock their potential. BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated, the building is designed in-line with Sky’s sustainability strategy throughout, with a thermally superior fabric, photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation and rainwater harvesting just some of the integrated measures.

Working from initial design concepts by Arup Associates, GLASSOLUTIONS was tasked with the £3m project to detail design, manufacture and install the whole building facade. The key feature of this is a centrepiece ground to fourth storey staircase which would offer building users uncluttered views across the adjacent and newer parts of the Sky complex.

It was a facade design that would have challenged any standard curtain walling system within a typical timescale, let alone one which was half the time. From the very first discussions with Mace and Sky,

the suitability of VS-1 was immediately apparent. As a mullion-only system which requires no mid-point horizontal structural support for very large spans – 12.5m in this case – and no transoms, VS-1 met the architects’ vision and ensured Sky could realise its ambition to match eye-catching aesthetics with an open internal environment benefitting from plenty of natural light.

The Believe in Better Building features externally mounted VS-1 mullions which have a distinctive ‘aerofoil’ shape to support the glazing along the full length of the 51m staircase, over which it rises some 15m. These are highly engineered aluminium extrusions which are secured using stainless steel brackets at top and bottom cantilevers from the building’s timber structure. These ensure a secure attachment at the top of the structure and at each floor level.

VS-1’s brackets hold the glass panels away from the mullion to give it a ‘floating’ effect – these are then siliconed at the top and bottom to give a flush finish. Each double glazed sealed unit – many of which are 3.2m high – features 13.5mm Saint-Gobain Planidur heat strengthened, laminated panes of glass on the interior and 8mm Securit toughened, heat soak tested on the exterior. The glass is Saint-Gobain’s COOL-LITE SKN165 II which was chosen to balance solar control and thermal insulation. www.glassolutions.co.uk

16 Schueco’s Concealed Window Fittings Range Is Now Even More Comprehensive

The AvanTec SimplySmart range of concealed window fittings from Schueco UK has been made more flexible and comprehensive than ever with the addition of a number of new parts designed to increase the system’s versatility. Among these is the Schueco SmartActive window handle which provides one answer to widespread concerns about the increasing numbers of germs that are becoming resistant to conventional antibiotics. The SmartActive handle has a specially developed anti-microbial surface finish, incorporating micro-silver

particles, that kills germs on contact. Independent tests verify a 99.9% reduction in germ contamination within 24 hours. Available in a variety of finishes including stainless steel and powder colour coated, SmartActive is effective against multi-resistant bacteria such as MRSA and MRSAE. Importantly, being free of nano particles, SmartActive is perfectly safe in use. In addition, an AvanTec anti-slam fitting has been introduced. Fully concealed within the window rebate, this employs various opening limiter stays to counter the problem of a sudden air-flow causing vents to slam shut. Effective in use and easy to retrofit, this is a very practical new addition to a range which already includes a concealed fitting that allows a vent to open a full 180O.www.schueco.co.uk

Optimistic Business Signals For 2016 Says Reynaers At Home Survey

There is a feeling of positivity amongst architects regarding the current business climate, according to Reynaers at Home’s national survey of industry trends. When asked “based on your level of business right now, do you feel that your business is doing better than this time last year?” 73% of architect respondents answered yes and only 8% said no. A further 20% said they were unsure. This compares to 67% of respondents who felt positive about the business climate in the previous Reynaers at Home survey in 2013.Despite a general feeling of optimism, there are still a number of industry annoyances that remain. Around a third said compromising a design for planning was a source of frustration, followed by a quarter of architects saying they didn’t have enough time to think. This has risen since 2013, when 20% of respondents said the same – implying that in the past three years, time has become more stretched.Having to scale a design concept to budget was pinpointed by 20%. One in 10 of respondents said that locating the materials that they wanted to use within budget was particularly irritating and 6% pointed a finger at tricky clients. Difficult builders and contractors were named by 5%, while delivering projects within agreed low fees due to the current market was also singled out – as well as a lack of trust and respect from clients in the design team. www.reynaersathome.co.uk

The Future Of Commercial Doors

For many years commercial entrance doors for office and retail developments have been available in aluminium; lightweight and sustainable aluminium framed doors are easy to make, strong and can cope with high usage, but their traditional looks can be a little dated. But now, for the more prestige developments, there is a new contender in the market…

Enter the MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door from Aluprof, it takes the inherent strength and sustainability from a frame of aluminium but also caters for bonded glazed units. The completed door has beautiful, flush, clean lines and is perfect for any commercial entrance application. Available with or without threshold the MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door can be configured to open in or open out and can be automated with some of the leading door automatics.

Whilst high traffic doors tend not to benefit greatly from high insulation levels within the leaf or frame, the MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door is designed with wide polyamide insulation strips which benefit heat retention when in the closed condition. Using standard Euro style locks and hardware, security can be

configured to suit the clients exact requirements. The MB-86 Frameless Leaf commercial door therefore offers, good looks, high security and good insulation for a wide range of applications.

Aluprof UK head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof exacting standards. The Façades Of Four Buildings Entirely Replaced With Wicona Curtain Walling – To Dramatic Effect

The façades of four buildings at Velocity Village – one of the largest mixed-use developments in Yorkshire – have been entirely replaced using 14,000m2 of curtain walling from Wicona.

Velocity Village occupies a four-acre site and provides more than 600,000ft2 of residential and commercial space in the centre of Sheffield. Designed by Axis Architecture, the extensive façade replacement was carried out by Glassolutions working with main contractor Jessops Construction. The buildings are all faced in acid-washed concrete, steel and glass in dramatic contrast to the scheme’s red-brick surroundings and adding sparkle, light and life to the city’s business district.

The architectural style is bold in its contemporary simplicity and has created a stylish landmark which successfully integrates urban living, learning and working environments. Each elevation is almost completely enclosed in Wicona curtain walling to maximise light, with floor-to-ceiling glazing allowing views of the Peak District, the landscaped courtyards or across the city.

Wicona’s WICTEC 50 SG structural glazing was used on every elevation of the four buildings to replace the original curtain walling which was no longer watertight, and to improve the overall quality of each development.

The façade specification was to create a ‘like-for-like’ frameless glass appearance to mirror the original architectural design. This was achieved using the WICTEC 50 SG system which features a ‘toggle’ to retain the glazed units within the infill channel. This option is fast and efficient to install, and delivers a frameless appearance as an alternative to silicone bonding. The Wicona curtain walling was also semi-unitised, which allowed the fabrication and assembly of the glazing units off site for faster and more accurate installation – an important benefit as the buildings were occupied throughout the façade replacement. An area of the

glazing on the V2 office building was also faceted across seven storeys.

Commenting on the project, Kevin Seers, Director of Axis Architecture said, “The curtain walling was a critical element because these four buildings had such an extensive amount of glazing. We needed to retain the appearance of continuous glass and the original façade design as closely as possible.”

“The Wicona façade system was sufficiently flexible and versatile to meet the design criteria and integrated well with the windows and doors. The WICTEC 50 SG curtain walling has successfully and closely reflected the appearance of the original buildings and we are extremely happy with the end result. The glazing is all performing well and each building looks fantastic. The façade replacement has really helped to revitalise the whole development. We would definitely use Wicona’s systems again.”

In addition to the curtain walling, Wicona also supplied:• Solar shading using fixed aluminium louvres• Open-in, side hung WICLINE evo 65 aluminium

casement windows inserted into the curtain walling at every level on each building

• WICSLIDE 23 sliding doors to the penthouse balconies at the top of the V3 apartment building

• WICSTYLE 65 evo outward-opening doors for access to the balconies for all the other residential units.

Wicona’s WICTEC curtain walling can be used to create vertical and angled façades; sloped and 3D glazed roofs and atria, and other geometric constructions. There is an extensive range of openings for natural ventilation; a wide variety of profiles for optimum creative freedom, and additional options for enhanced burglar and bullet resistance and fire protection, without changing the overall appearance of the facade.www.wicona.co.uk

New Degrees Of Excellence From Metal Technology

The new School of Veterinary Science at Surrey University, described as ‘iconic’ by Professor Christopher Proudman, features high rise curtain walling façade and door systems from Metal Technology. Located on the Manor Park Campus in Guildford, the Devereux Architects designed school comprises three complimentary and inter-related buildings totalling around 9000 square metres; an academic building, a veterinary clinical skills centre and a veterinary pathology facility.

Metal Technology’s System 17 capped high rise curtain walling was central to creating the design aesthetic for the flagship development, providing a structure tailored to the desired look without compromise on performance and efficiency. The end result is a clear demonstration of System 17’s limitless flexibility in design applications. Considered a highly cost-effective, quality engineered glazing solution, System 17 complies with current British Standards and provides exceptional standards of structural integrity, weather performance and thermal enhancement.

The Translucent Link

The Equinix UK flagship centre in Slough now has a new 8,000sqm LD6 data warehousing facility. This connects the two sister data centres via hundreds of dark fibre links and has become the fastest-growing data centre campus, including one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges. Building envelope specialist Lakesmere Ltd commissioned Structura UK Ltd to install Kalwall translucent cladding to form the link between two buildings. The Kalwall not only diffuses attractive natural daylight into the interior but its 0.56 W/m2K U-value optimises thermal performance and prevents solar heat gain. It also helps to obscure vision and retain privacy in some parts of the facility. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare

and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is bathed with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Apart from being specified for all types of new build project, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of cladding or rooflights on aged buildings. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. www.structura-uk.com/kalwall

Winning Architect Highlights The Stunning Art Of Imago

Elegant and stunning Imago Lift & Slide timber doors from AGB blend beautiful Italian design with skilled craftsmanship to take away the distinction between indoors and out.

With low-profile timber frames as slender as just 2cm on spans of up to 7m, Imago is the product of choice for designers who desire to put art into architecture. The light-touch, silky smooth lift and slide mechanism is incorporated discreetly, allowing Imago to open up spectacular panoramic views without visual intrusion. The result is an expansive panoramic glazed door that offers an uninterrupted view, brings light into a property and represents an appealing timber alternative to traditional bi-fold doors.

Now the spectacular opportunities presented by Imago Lift & Slide Doors have been demonstrated to inspirational effect at ‘Villa Nemes’ in Liguria, Italy. It’s been selected as the winner of Live outside the Box, the competition to find the best use of the product, for Casabella, the prestigious Italian architectural magazine with a focus on modern, radical design.

The half-subterranean house features a living turf roof, local stone facades and oak flooring, all reflecting the external natural environment. But the chief visual stand-out is the extensive Imago cornerless glazing.

Designer Daniele Giordano of Giordano Hadamik Architects says the Imago Lift & Slide Doors and glazing played a key role in the project: “In the living room the large 6m span of Imago cornerless glazing, with a 1.5m

return, becomes one of the most significant points of the house. The hidden frame enhances the effect of lightness and transparency, framing views of the pool, the big oak tree, the patio and into the valley and the sea.”The Imago Lift & Slide Door system also contributed to helping the property reach Passivhaus standards. With beauty comes impressive practicality: Imago Lift & Slide Doors offer industry-leading thermal and weather performance, redefining what is possible from a timber door.

And even in British weather, which means large doors stay closed for most of the year, Imago’s slim design means its impact is not lessened.

Using Imago also enabled Giordano Hadamik Architects to reduce glazing costs on the project by 40 percent. AGB has created a simplified system which offers top-quality performance with less components for reduced costs and a stunning finish.

Installation and joinery companies who target the premium market will find Imago panoramic glazing a particular attraction for homeowners and designers.

27CMS Window Systems has played a key role in delivering high quality student accommodation for the Glasgow School of Art (GSA), helping a leading developer breathe new life into a city centre office building that had become surplus to requirements.

As student numbers soar across the UK, forward thinking developers and universities are working hard to meet the growing demand for high quality student accommodation.

Whilst new build development often represents the ideal solution, limited site availability in city centre locations can make refurbishment of redundant buildings a more feasible approach. This was the case for the GSA which was keen to provide additional accommodation for its students in the heart of Glasgow, close to its Garnethill campus.

Developer Cityheart Ltd, who have a strong track record in working with the public sector in regeneration projects such as student accommodation, have facilitated this by breathing new life into the disused eight-storey Blythswood House. Designed by Cooper Cromar, this refurbishment project has transformed a disused office building into the convenient new student residences that the GSA sought for its 2015 intake.

Located on West Regent Street to the west of Glasgow city centre, Blythswood House is a short walk from the GSA’s main campus, providing 218 rooms arranged over six floors. These rooms are arranged in clusters of six to eight rooms with communal kitchen, dining and seating areas. There are also self-contained apartments

at ground floor and roof level for the building’s warden and visiting lecturers and tutors, plus superb amenities including studios, workshops, exhibition space, a cinema and a gym.

Working with main contractor Graham Construction, CMS Window Systems was appointed to design, manufacture and install high performance, contemporary style aluminium windows for the building’s external envelope. Using the Metal Technology 4-20 thermally broken system, CMS has provided over 500 windows on the project as well as installing the bespoke panels which feature as part of the external envelope refurbishment solution.

CMS Window Systems routinely delivers projects like Blythswood House for main contractors across the UK to the highest standard. The company is a leading aluminium curtain walling, window and door manufacturer and installer which was one of the first contractors of its kind to become BIM-ready. Its technical capabilities and systems portfolio ensure the company is equipped to deliver a wide range of projects and applications including hotels and leisure complexes, student accommodation, schools and office buildings.

GSA is internationally recognised as one of Europe's leading university-level institutions for the visual creative disciplines. Founded in 1845 as one of the first Government Schools of Design, as a centre of creativity promoting good design for the manufacturing industries, the GSA’s role has continually evolved and developed. www.cmswindows.com

Vastern Timber Unveils Brimstone At Ecobuild

Vastern Timber will be exhibiting at Ecobuild 2016 and will be unveiling Brimstone, the first commercially available thermally modified British timber. Sourced exclusively from English and Welsh woodlands, the Brimstone range is ideal for cladding, decking, external joinery and furniture, and includes thermally modified ash, sycamore and poplar. During the thermal modification process the timber is super-heated to temperatures between 160° and 210°.

The combination of high heat and steam reconfigures the wood to deliver a material of exceptional stability, durability and aesthetic uniformity that is highly resistant to mould and fungus. The dark brown colouring of Brimstone products and their performance in exterior applications make them ideal replacements for tropical timber products.

Speaking about the launch, Tom Barnes, Managing Director of Vastern Timber said “Imported thermally modified products are already available and growing in popularity as the benefits become more widely recognised. However, what sets Brimstone apart is that it is produced exclusively from trees grown in English and Welsh woodlands, and from species that are currently underused. The development of the range has been born out of a desire to offer a truly sustainable thermally modified product that supports our local domestic woodlands.

“The process involves no chemicals and does not rely on impregnating the timber. The most impressive outcome of the thermal modification process is that products are significantly more stable than non-modified timbers resulting in significantly less expansion and contraction when faced with changes in ambient temperature and

humidity, making them a superior solution for a range of exterior uses. Additionally, the process reconfigures wood that would normally rot when used outside, into products that will last 30 years and more without treatment.

“Creating value for our native woodlands and the principal of local sourcing has been a central driver for development of the Brimstone range. Thermal modification is a truly exciting development that could potentially change the fortunes of British mixed woodlands. It represents a real opportunity to improve the management of our mixed woodlands by creating a demand for lesser used white hardwoods.”

Innovation At Ecobuild - Introducing BioSOLAR

Deciding between a green roof and photovoltaics (PV) has been a question faced by many industry professionals over recent years when designing a flat roof; however these two technologies are no longer mutually exclusive options with the introduction of Bauder BioSOLAR, which will be officially launched at this year’s Ecobuild. A biosolar roof is the successful combination of biodiverse and extensive green roofs with photovoltaic systems, delivering a duality of technologies for environmental advantage and increased profitability for your client or building owner.

APPLICATIONS?Although designed primarily for new build applications where this synergy of solutions is often required to meet planning and BREEAM requirements; the biosolar system can also be retrofitted on many existing roofs without the need for any structural modification to the building. The construction industry has long been calling for rooftop solutions that include a duality of technologies for environmental advantage, and a biosolar roof delivers just that providing reciprocal benefits from the PV module and green roof components.

BENEFITS?Biosolar roofs deliver all the benefits of green roofs and solar power in a synergy of technologies that maximises PV output and the footprint for the green roof: • Cooling effect of vegetation increases solar output

by up to 5%

• Green roof element acts as ballast so waterproofing is not penetrated

• Entire roof qualifies as biodiverse green roof by maximising area for vegetation

• Shade tolerant species thrive under PV creating more diverse flora and fauna community

CHALLENGES?The integration of PV and green roof technologies requires skill and expert understanding and there are already examples of where biosolar roofs have been poorly designed and installed. Designs that do not perform optimally for both technologies are often as a result of people assuming that the solar panels require more technical input than the green roof.

Getting the green roof element wrong can mean the vegetation is forced to grow around the panels, which results in shadowing and therefore reduced energy generation. For many PV systems shadowing on one panel can subsequently have a detrimental impact on the overall performance of the entire string of modules.

Ultimately, a collaborative approach is needed thro ughout the design and procurement process from all project stakeholders to ensure the maximum benefit for the building owner. With flat roof manufacturer Bauder able to supply all of the waterproofing, green roof and PV elements it gives you total confidence that this energy efficient and cohesive solution is the right one for your project. Switzerland, Germany and various other European countries have already proven that

Page 23: The Essential Building Product Review February 2016 Issue 1

23

enquire online at www.ebpr.co.uk/card

when planned, designed and installed well, solar and green roofs can improve the performance of both elements. There are many local authorities in the UK requesting that new developments seek to incorporate, where suitable, PV and green roofs into their designs, however not many are yet calling for biosolar technology, which is something that must change for this combined system to truly take off and become commonplace.

BAUDER BioSOLAR Bauder was the first company to introduce green roofs to the UK over 30 years ago and it is now bringing to market its own innovative PV mounting system for biodiverse and extensive green roofs, Bauder BioSOLAR. The Bauder BioSOLAR system uses the substrate and vegetation to provide the ballasted installation mechanism, removing the need to penetrate the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof and simultaneously makes the most of the available area for vegetation, enabling the entire roof to qualify as a biodiverse green roof.

A key feature of Bauder’s unique system is that the front edge of the polycrystalline PV panel is raised 300mm above the finished green roof level, allowing light and moisture to reach beneath the panels whilst ensuring the mature vegetation will not shade the panels and can be easily maintained. The mixture of sunny, shaded and sheltered areas together with a variable depth of FLL compliant

extensive substrate gives a matrix of different habitats that allow a broader range of plant species to thrive, and a rich foraging environment for bees and insects.

The BioSOLAR solution also delivers advantages to the building, as the cooling effect of the vegetation and water held within the green roof system preserves the ambient temperature around the PV array, which in turn increases the solar output by over 5% (studies in Germany have shown that PVs work most efficiently with a temperature of around 24°C). The PV mounting frame features a 100% recycled high-density polyethylene base board and consists of just three components - a quick fix angle support, profile module rail and module fixings – that make for an extremely quick and simple installation process.

BioSOLAR AT ECOBUILDBauder BioSOLAR will be officially launched to the widespread construction industry in March at Ecobuild 2016 - the world’s leading event for sustainable design, construction, energy and the built environment. Now in its 12th year the highly anticipated event is expected to attract over 40,000 industry professionals and includes a tantalizing speaker line-up that includes comedian and TV personality Stephen Fry.

BauderSOLAR Product Manager Tom Raftery will be in attendance and is set to deliver an exclusive

new seminar on how biosolar roofs can help you meet BREEAM targets, planning conditions and the Merton rule (Wednesday 9th March 1:30pm-2pm at Specifier Live near the Discover Zone in ExCeL London). This discussion will also cover the biosolar design and installation pitfalls to beware of and how to avoid them to ensure your warranty is sound and not fragmented to safeguard your client.

Tom and the rest of the Bauder team will be available to answer any technical questions that you may have about current or future projects on Stand E4090, across from the Discover Zone near the N3 entrance, so be sure to visit them.

A Transparent Solution To Noise PollutionWrightstyle is a leading UK advanced glazing company and supplies its steel and aluminium systems worldwide. Tim Kempster, the company’s managing director, looks at how glass absorbs sound. We can’t see or smell it, but it’s one of the most insidious pollutants of the modern world.

Noise. Whether it’s the neighbours upstairs having a party at 5 am (complete with herd of elephants) or a jet aircraft coming into land – with you directly underneath the flight-path. How we perceive noise is personal and subjective. A person on a bus may be enjoying their music, but the noise leaking from his or her earphones can be deeply irritating to everyone else. Nor does it have to be a loud noise. For example, a gently-ticking bedside clock may lull some people off to sleep; for others, it’s an irritant guaranteed to keep them awake. In the UK, noise is defined as being “a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance.”

In the USA, it’s defined as “unwanted or disturbing sound.” Sound becomes noise when it either interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, conversation, or disrupts one’s quality of life. Unwanted noise probably affects most of us every day, and adversely affects the lives of millions of people. Usually, it’s just annoying. However, it can be more than just an irritant. Research has demonstrated a link between noise and health problems, including stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, and sleep disruption. Lack of sleep from noise pollution may also have an unexpected impact on our waistlines. Research in Sweden and published in the British Medical Journal suggests that disrupted sleep makes people less willing to exercise, and more likely to put on weight.

In 1990, about thirty million people in the USA were exposed on a daily basis to occupational noise levels above 85 decibels – a harmful threshold. That compares with just over 9 million people in 1981 – and has, no doubt, further increased. In the developed world, according to the World Health Organisation (2001), as many as 15% of the working

population are exposed to sound in excess of 85 decibels. Worryingly, more than five million children in the USA, aged between six and nineteen, suffer from noise-induced hearing impairment (Havas 2006). In the UK, exposure to noise has impaired children’s reading comprehension (Clark and Stansfeld 2005).

In the workplace, noise pollution has an impact on staff morale, efficiency and productivity. A 2013 study by the University of Sydney found that a lack of sound privacy was the biggest drain on employee morale. Prosaically, we perceive noise either physiologically or psychologically – the former being when we simply hear the noise, the latter when we take the trouble to listen to the noise. It’s the difference between listening to our own music and being forced to listen to someone else’s. In the UK, more than 422,000 noise complaints were received by local authorities during 2013-2014. That’s a lot of noise, and a lot of complaints. There are, of course, a number of ways in which sound can be reduced – from better office layout to sound-proofing, and providing a workplace free of unacceptable noise intrusion is a legislative requirement.

Often overlooked, one sound-proofing material is glass – either for external glazing or as internal screens, and which can reduce noise levels dramatically. Glass controls noise by reflecting the noise back towards its source, and absorbing noise energy within the glass. Noise pollution can come in a variety of low, medium or high frequency sounds. Higher pitched sound, carried by short sound waves, are easier to absorb. Noise at lower frequencies, for example traffic noise, is less easy to deal with. It’s therefore important to choose the correct acoustic glazing type, to best deal with the frequency or pitch of the noise to be absorbed – as well as the level of decibels to be reduced.

Sound insulation within a glazing system is achieved by building in cavity space between panes of glass, using thicker glass, using an efficient insulating window frame or utilising specially laminated acoustic glass. Acoustic glass is a sandwich of two or more sheets of glass, heat or pressure bonded together with one or more interlayers. The interlayers act as a noise dampener, weakening the energy of the sound waves as they travel through the glass.

Glass does have other benefits because natural light matters. Research by Mirjam Muench has found that people working under artificial light become sleepier earlier than those who work in natural light. In addition, studies demonstrate that people work best when they have a view of the external world, on top of the ambient light from it. Glass walls help light flood in, bringing the outside inside, and psychologically connecting us with the world beyond our office.

Although Wrightstyle’s advanced glazing systems were primarily developed to stop fire and toxic gases for up to 120 minutes, or mitigate against ballistic or bomb attack, they also reduce or eliminate noise pollution. In the same way that specialist glazing systems provide fire compartmentation, they also compartmentalise sound – from curtain walling shutting out external noise, to internal glazed partitioning and smoke-sealing doors containing noise inside a building. Combining advanced levels of protection with the high performance of steel framing and we can often provide a complete solution for sound reduction in one glazed assembly.

As designers – and employers – have become increasingly aware of the benefits of a quiet and conducive workplace, so our systems have become increasingly specified for their sound-proofing qualities. That’s been true for a number of residential projects, national laboratories, schools and universities – and for our work on the 2012 London Olympic stadium and adjoining Orbital. We’re also currently supplying our systems for the conversion of the 2012 media centre into a new digital quarter.

This major project, now called Here East, will provide more than 7,500 jobs – and is already the broadcasting hub for BT Sport which began broadcasting from the site in 2013. Sound was a key factor in the contract, particularly for our large fire-rated curtain wall atrium which required a mix of aesthetics, fire resistance and acoustic properties. Sound is ubiquitous in the modern world. But, when it becomes unwelcome or intrusive, we can nowadays also aspire to something better: the sound of silence. www.wrightstyle.co.uk

A spacious, light-filled kitchen with fabulous views over the Cleveland Hills is the focus of this inspirational case study. Designed by Heidi Westcar at Culinary Architecture as part of a year-long, extensive property renovation, the kitchen, its open-plan seating areas and boot room all use Misty Carrara (4141) throughout, which was supplied and fabricated by Dales of Thirsk.

The centrepiece of the home’s stunning kitchen – which was relocated from one side of the manor house to the other in order to maximise a southern aspect – is a vast, L-shaped island. A bespoke build, Misty Carrara’s delicate colouring sets off the island’s striking dark aubergine finish perfectly. Two undermounted sinks have been set into the island – one is Belfast style and one is a smaller, handily placed, prep sink.

Heidi Westcar says, ‘My client wanted an elegant, bright and light-filled kitchen space; the emphasis was very much on space and maximising the light and views. As such, we first implemented some very significant structural changes, which included extending the length of the room, adding a lantern roof and no less than 7 sets of beautiful French doors.

‘The client was keen to avoid an overly ‘kitcheny kitchen’ and also wanted to achieve an easy movement between the core of the kitchen and the informal seating areas, which we created by opening up the rooms internally. Specifying Caesarstone for the kitchen and beyond was just one of the ways we realised this – using it for the island, but also for the runs of surfaces throughout the wider space and into the boot room meant that a beautiful sense of fluidity was achieved.’

One of Caesarstone’s best-selling Classico colours, Misty Carrara has the ability to enhance a wide range of schemes and looks as good with hand painted cabinetry as it does with natural wood.

Commenting on her client’s choice of Misty Carrara, Heidi says, ‘My client wanted to use Caesarstone from the beginning – she liked the subtlety of Misty’s colouring and, as her objective was to create a very classic, elegant kitchen space, thought it was a timeless and practical choice.’

The kitchen’s island features a chamfered profile, whilst the surrounding surfaces have been finished simply.

Heidi comments, ‘We deliberately wanted to give the island’s profile a more detailed, decorative appearance, as it seemed in keeping with the island’s status as a key focal point within the kitchen. However, I was very conscious that my client wanted to stay away from that ‘ornate look’, so when it came to the profiles for the rest of the surfaces we left them plain and simple – and as a result, the island commands just the right amount of wow-factor.’

Heidi adds that the practicality and durability of Caesarstone also influenced her client’s decision. Manufactured from 93% natural materials and virtually resistant to scratches and stains, it is guaranteed for 15 years from installation – meaning that when it comes to creating timeless, ‘forever’ kitchens – Caesarstone really is an excellent choice.

Heidi comments, ‘As a designer, you obviously want to use products and materials that are aesthetically pleasing. However, it’s also essential that whatever you specify can also stand up to day-in, day-out useage. And Caesarstone is very resistant to pretty much everything that anyone could subject it to – there never seems to be any after-installation issues and I confidently tell clients they won’t have to worry about spillages or specialist maintenance.’

Heidi is also a fan of Caesarstone’s latest Supernatural colours, saying, ‘For clients that love the look and feel of marble, but whom are put off by its high maintenance demands, Caesarstone’s Supernatural series is ideal. At present, the prevailing trend is very much for organic, natural surfaces that will look as good in ten years’ time as on the day they’re installed. And colours such as Misty Carrara and the new Supernatural palette do this very well indeed. Now, all I need is for Caesarstone to create quartz that emulates the look of grey oak!’www.caesarstone.co.uk

Terrazzo Four-Ways

London’s Diespeker & Co has been working with terrazzo since 1881. The company has recently ‘broken the mould’ by seamlessly combining the different forms of this inherently practical material. Standard terrazzo - Most often used for flooring and staircases, standard terrazzo has been a staple of concourses and public buildings everywhere for over 150 years. Diespeker’s range of standard terrazzo, imported from Italy, now numbers an impressive 31 options. The terrazzo is cut to the required size at Diespeker’s purpose-built, designated factory in South East London, where design detail such as cut outs, profile edges, grooves and insets are added by a specialist team. Hand cast bespoke terrazzo - Diespeker continues to use traditional skills and tools in the production of exclusive countertops, worktops, display plinths and other design-led products using bespoke cement based terrazzo. The process enables unusual items to be added to the mix, such as broken chunks of marble sourced from slabs in their factory yard, glass chippings or semi-precious stones. One of their most demanding design challenges to date was making a fully operational terrazzo fountain for Vico’s new eaterie in Cambridge Circus. In startling bright blue, the mix incorporates glass chippings imported from Canada and brass rods cut into 5mm lengths, painstakingly bonded by hand to the mould.  Resin based terrazzo - As a flooring option, resin based terrazzo can facilitate a jointless finish, giving increased aesthetic qualities for shops and galleries and, for laboratories, improved hygiene. Unlike standard terrazzo, resin based terrazzo does not require trowelling and rolling as there are minimal air bubbles to remove. Where cement based terrazzo at 20mm is relatively fragile, resin bonded to aluminium for rigidity can be laid at 10mm, and oversized lightweight countertops made by bonding to 7mm thick honeycomb rigid aluminium sheets. Diespeker has also grasped the potential of the material if used with moulds, as with cement based terrazzo.

Resin based bespoke - Over the past decade, Diespeker has contributed complex elements to the specialist resin based flooring sector, such as the treads and risers for a low gradient ramp of almost 18 metres in length, an unusual design combining slope and steps, and the skirting and wall strings for the University of Westminster. Diespeker is now taking the concept a step further, producing resin based terrazzo countertops and display plinths for the new flagship store of contemporary fashion brand, Whistles, and a pale blue material with white chippings, cast into countertops for the 2015 London Design Festival. Seamless combination - Diespeker achieved a perfect matching of terrazzo and resin based terrazzo during the refurbishment of a Mayfair boutique, with a design specification for resin based terrazzo flooring without joints, and matching cantilevered stairs. The challenge was to achieve an identical finish for flooring and stairs, which was achieved by matching the resin based terrazzo flooring with a complex cantilevered stair in cement based terrazzo. This required extremely high production values to ensure a seamless transition from flooring to stairs. Mix and match - The demands of this project and the response of Diespeker’s team resulted in a first: a unified matching of resin and cement based terrazzo, using specialist concrete work and mould making. This ‘mix and match’ capacity opens up a whole new world of possibilities for clients looking for a bespoke design for flooring, stairs and displays.  Diespeker has an in-house capacity to make up a sample of bespoke terrazzo in twenty-four hours. Diespeker’s offices and factory are just two miles from London Bridge, making it practical for architects and designers wanting to explore new design possibilities to drop in and get a feel for the possibilities of terrazzo. With the limitless potential of bespoke terrazzo and resin based terrazzo, the future is not set in stone. www.diespeker.co.uk

Curves Bring Comfort With This New Matrix Basin

New from Pressalit Care for 2016 is an ergonomically designed wash basin – the New Matrix Curve - that features a curved front edge and sloping sides. Just as much at home in a Changing Places facility as it would be in an educational, care or residential institution, the New Matrix Curve basin has all the features you would expect to make this perfectly suited to users with limited mobility. The sleek and attractive basin incorporates softly shaped, wide, sloping side edges that enable users to lean in and rest their elbows comfortably for stability and support. The curved front edge means both standing and seated users can be close enough to the basin to operate the tap, while the shallow bowl provides ample room underneath for wheelchair users. Furthermore, raised edges along the back and sides of the basin prevent water from spilling onto the floor. Where height adjustment is a requirement, such as in Changing Places washrooms, the New Matrix Curve can be fitted with either the Pressalit Care Select or Plus brackets for maximum flexibility. www.pressalit.com

Silent Students

Interiors which can generate the most unacceptable noise and echoes are most likely to be those where young people gather for work, play and socialising, such as schools, leisure centres and swimming pools. Fortunately, there now exists a high performance solution which many architects specify in the form of Troldtekt acoustic panels which not only reduce reverberation but are also aesthetically pleasing.

This solution has been used for Danish Social and Healthcare College which has relocated to the Aarhus suburb of Skejby. The new 13,000sqm building has been designed by Cubo architects to create a great sense of student community. It is intended to be a town within a town arranged around a central hub, the natural place for students to gather and access all the various levels and departments. In particular, the ‘sitting stairs’ and galleried walkways offer good views of life in the complex while emphasising interest and human scale.

Here, natural wood Troldtekt panels with a fine structure have been installed throughout the College to ensure good acoustics in the open and high ceilinged rooms while creating a particularly attractive and warm atmosphere. Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left unpainted or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Troldtekt sustainability has also been recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept and earns gold on 4 out of 5 criteria in the Cradle to Cradle certification version 3.1. www.troldtekt.co.uk

What Is Reverberation Noise And Why Do We Have It?

Reverberation noise is produced when a sound source stops within an enclosed space. Sound waves continue to reflect off the ceiling, walls and floor surfaces until they eventually die out. These reflected sound waves are known as reverberation.Reverberation is becoming an increasingly common problem in today’s society, owing to recent trends in modern interior design, for example sound absorbing products such as carpets

and curtains are being replaced with hard flooring and blinds. These are highly reflective surfaces and as a result will increase the reverberation time, thus amplifying the ambient sound levels of a room.Hush Acoustics offers a range of solutions to reduce reverberation

noise levels, one of which is the Hush Absorber range. This range of acoustic absorber panels have a Class A absorption rating and comply with UK Building Regulations Approved Document E (England & Wales), Section 5 of the Scottish Building Standards (Scotland) and Approved Part G (Northern Ireland) as well as with BB93 Standards for Acoustics in Schools.Robert Crampton, Managing Director of Hush Acoustics, commented, “Our Hush Absorber range is a really popular option with our customers. One of the worst cases of reverberation noise problems I have ever encountered was in a primary school, in particular their multi-use hall and dining area. School assemblies were often a struggle as reverberation noise levels meant speech clarity was poor. After we carried out a site inspection, we recommended the use of our Hush Absorber Panels to bring the school hall reverberation levels in line with BB93 guidelines. After installation, there was a noticeable difference in the levels of reverberation noise and teachers found it easier to present assemblies.” www.hushacoustics.co.uk

The new 2OI5›2OI8 Abet Laminati Collection has been launched globally and is now available in the UK and Ireland from Abet Ltd. As part of its continued research and development, factoring in specific market demands, Abet has introduced some exciting new ranges whilst streamlining some existing ones. Cross is a special horizontal finish that is sinuous, structured and opaque, for a deep visual effect that highlights any shade. Root expresses itself with signs that are reminiscent of wooden essences, instantly transmitting warmth and energy through sight and touch.

Sublimated Trascenda Is Permanently Patterned

Glass mosaic and decorative solid surfaces specialist, Trend, has launched its new Trascenda agglomerate range, with integrated patterns inspired by the finest natural marble, childhood memories and weathered materials at its 19th century Orsoni smalti workshop.Created using cutting-edge dye sublimation techniques, the distinctive designs are embedded into the surface of Trend’s slimline granite, quartz, porcelain or even recycled glass composite sheets, so that permanent images are transferred into the material.

The host agglomerate sheet retains all of its technical properties, so these beautiful surfaces are non-porous, low maintenance and resistant to heat, impact, scratch, stains and chemical cleaners. The Trend Trascenda collection is available to special order from Granite Transformations showrooms, with the added bonus of a full installation service, as well as independent Trend stockists. The dye sublimation process has ample scope for new design collections to augment the initial launch and bespoke decorative finishes for commercial and residential applications.

Indeed, leading hotel chain Sheraton has already commissioned a custom design for a Kid’s Club hotel facility in Orlando, Florida, featuring sinuous water-effect flooring in place of high-maintenance carpet. The standard Trascenda range currently comprises three distinctive design collections, each with a series of theme-linked patterns that have been ‘tattooed’ onto Trend Polar Ice, Pietra Serena or Ivory slab, their neutral tones providing a subtle backdrop for the subdued patterns:

Elements Of Light – eight colourways inspired by patterns of light and weathered materials at the historic Orsoni furnace, including Imperial Blue that reflects molten enamel colours, Rusty evoking rusted work tools and Weathered taken from time-worn wooden barrels.Memories – six designs reflecting treasured memories of Trend people and images that capture Italian family life, including Kiss The Chef evoking handwritten cookery notes, Bottles and Pots & Pans graphically depicting regular kitchen items and Numbers with its blocked numerals.Classic & Remastered – four naturalistic patterns based on the most precious varieties of marble quarried in Italy, among the most luxurious in the world, like classic Carrara with its greyish-white ground and feathery

veining or Calacatta with more dramatic veins and golden undertones.

These studio-designed patterns are offered on tough quarter-inch thick slab over 3 metres long and in a range of seven square and rectangular tiles, between 30cm x 30cm and 120cm x 120cm, for walls and flooring. Applications include kitchen worktops and splashbacks, bathroom panels, domestic and medium-traffic commercial floors, wall liners and custom-made furniture. Waterproof and mould-resistant, Trend sublimated panels are also perfect for lining out showers and wet rooms, providing elegant, seamless alternatives to tiles. The use of water-based dyes and recyclable raw materials further ensures Trascenda has minimal impact on the environment, especially as the slimline material can be installed over existing tiles and other surfaces, with no ripping out or wastage for landfill.

Across the collections, the subtle colours and patterns are in keeping with the current mood for neutral shades, combined with distinctive designs not previously seen on this type of composite material. With its naturalistic patterns, Trascenda offers a highly practical alternative to classic marble finishes, with no worries about sealing, scratching and staining; for kitchen stylists, it enables statement splashbacks and elegantly contrasting island units, against regular plain and textured Trend agglomerate; whilst in wet areas it affords elements of light, shadows and rich enamels for stunning, water-resistant, grout-free surfaces.

The exciting scope presented for bespoke agglomerate surfaces, particularly for architects, interior designers and property developers, is exemplified by the Sheraton Hotels project. Using its in-house resources, Trend was able to create a water-effect pattern and embed this onto eight full-size agglomerate slabs, using an endothermic or heat absorbing process, then cut these into a sinuous river-like shape and install it onto a Kid’s Club floor. Previously, this effect was achieved with carpeting, which had a comparatively low installation cost, but required very high-end maintenance, whereas the Trascenda solution offers considerable operational and aesthetic benefits.

The Blues Kitchen has opened in Brixton, London offering a proven formula of late night live music, authentic BBQ food and an amazingly large selection of bourbons. Located in what was once the old Electric Social premises, the cavernous ground floor space is dominated by a flamboyant faience-fronted, ceramic tiled bar, which has been designed and hand-manufactured by specialist tile company Craven Dunnill Jackfield. This contemporary installation of Victorian styled ceramic tiles breathes new life into this traditional art form and highlights the practicality of ceramics in a bar environment.

The faience* tiled bar stretches 10 metres long and is set off against a back-drop of white and blue brick shaped ceramic tiles and amber dados, which define arched recessed areas. The venue promotes its own BBQ and drink specialities by writing on the glazed tiles, which can easily be wiped clean and fresh adverts promoted.

The faience tiles at the front of the bar date back to the 1880’s in style and are hand-made at Craven Dunnill Jackfield’s works up in Shropshire. There are five different designs of tile which clad both the bar and five floor-to-ceiling pillars. Each of the central, large green tiles measure 245x 600mm and are convex, weighing around 10kg each.

The deeply textured relief design dates to the late 19th century and features a repeating urn motif; these tiles are bordered by four styles of decorative blue and amber coloured dado tiles. The same designs are featured on the 2.5m tall pillars, which are capped with deep capital tiles, decorated with an acanthus leaf design.

Craven Dunnill Jackfield employs a unique team of expert ceramists, acclaimed for their specialist knowledge and experience. The relief tiles are made using hand carved plaster moulds and decorated with metal oxide glazes, which craze upon firing to create an authentic aged effect. For the large tiles, featuring the urns, each required 200g of glaze to achieve the desired depth of colour and took two people to dip the pieces into a large vat of glaze. These were then gently lifted and carefully stacked into the kilns and fired over night at 1040 degrees Celsius.

The Blues Kitchen is part of the Colombo Group and this is the third such venue to open. It is known for its live Blues, Soul and Bluegrass music, Texan BBQ food and wide range of bourbons and cocktails. The interior style is eclectic, successfully combining Moroccan décor with contemporary textiles, commemorative stained glass windows and extensive reclaimed materials. www.cravendunnill-jackfield.co.uk

The revolving door has become a significant choice for many architects and facilities managers due to the way they naturally help to keep out draughts and reduce energy loss within a building. The cost saving decision to install a revolving door not only reduces your monthly energy bills but it is also more eco-friendly for the environment due to the reduced amount of hot air that leaves the building with every door rotation. Still feeling the cold? Why not consider adding a Boon Edam heater onto your door? On occasions when the weather is windy, cold air can sometimes become trapped within the seperate compartments of a revolving door and subsequently forced into an internal area, normally the reception area. By combining a Boon Edam heater with a revolving door system this cold air is negated and prevented from entering the building. When installed, the main body of the heater unit is strategically mounted above the revolving door and using curved air outlets, creates a warm barrier around the inner opening of the doorway which counteracts any cold air infiltrating through the door. With the option to add a Boon Edam heater either from new or as a retrofit, we can ensure that your lobby area is kept at a comfortable climate at all times whilst not impacting on the aesthetics of your entry point. www.boonedam.co.uk

CPD Guide To New-Build Heating And Hot Water Provision

The latest free CPD-Accredited guide from Mitsubishi Electric looks at the unique approach to heating and hot water provision that is needed for the new homes that the nation needs to build to match demand. There is a significant drive

from all sectors, including Government to revitalise the new homes sector of the UK, but in these days of environmental concerns, we need to look at different ways of supplying these homes as energy efficiently as possible. The guide looks at the increasingly stringent standards on energy efficiency and air tightness that have to be met to ensure the UK is able to meet stringent emissions reduction targets, as buildings account for 44 per cent of all UK CO2 emissions - more than industry or transport.Building hundreds of thousands of new houses therefore represents a golden opportunity to change the way we heat and provide hot water in our homes – which are major energy users.New homes have different heating and hot water requirements from previous generations and the guide explores how the approach to domestic heating has to change, especially as hot water becomes the dominant load. To download a free copy of the Guide to Heating and Hot Water Provision in New Build Homes, visit the company’s dedicated digital library: www. http://library.mitsubishielectric.co.uk.

Probably The Best Saltless Water Softener In The World

People have been copying Aquatiere’s saltless water softeners over the past few years and have achieved limited success. Unfortunately the customer who expects ‘soft water’ was often disappointed by the fact that the softener did not perform as they expected.Aquatiere was the first UK company to use pre-crystalisation resins such as TAC and WAC to stop scale forming in pipework and equipment and market this as a saltless water softener.4 years of R&D later Aquatiere has now produced a product that meets customers expectations. The new Pureau range of saltless water softeners actually produce soft water using ion exchange. Resins – Simply softer water! www.aquatiere.co.uk

67Eco-Friendly Companies Collaborate To Build Dream Home

A couple from Peebles, Scotland, have had their dream of an eco-friendly bungalow with access for a wheel chair user turned into a reality. Mr and Mrs Lamb had a very specific set of requirements when they approached Eskgrove Homes for a new home. Mr Lamb suffers from degenerating illness so they were looking for a bungalow that could be wheelchair friendly. The thought of an eco-friendly home was also very appealing to them. The couple had already been impressed with Eskgrove homes whose strapline is warmer, quieter, cleaner, greener, but the company was more used to building executive homes than bungalows.

Colin Cumberland, Managing Director of Eskgrove Homes was happy to accommodate the Lamb’s and worked closely with Ecoliving Limited, a renewable heating provider, to make their new bungalow as eco-friendly as possible. It’s very rewarding to work with Eskgrove homes who have the same vision about low energy homes and buildings”, explained Mark Henderson co-founder of Ecoliving. “This is very much aligned to Ecoliving's approach of helping to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy systems“.

An Ecodan Air Source Heat Pump was installed to deliver underfloor heating to the house as well as all the hot water the couple need. The Ecodan takes heat from the outside air and upgrades it to deliver effective, low carbon heating and hot water in the home.Mr and Mrs Lamb have also been delighted with the cost of electricity in their bungalow. They now can pay as little as £15 a month to Scottish Gas who initially over estimated their bills. www.mitsubishielectric.co.uk

Carbon Monoxide – And How A Window Could Help Save Your Life

It is the most common cause of poisoning death. You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You can’t taste it. Yet it kills hundreds of people each year around the world. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a deadly risk to health. It is also impossible detect without the right equipment. No doubt you have heard news stories of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You are probably aware that it has a lot to do with badly-maintained gas appliances.

Why is it so dangerous – and how can windows make a difference? In this short article we take a look at some important facts about carbon monoxide, before talking about some Roto products that can be used to form part of a safeguarding policy.

What exactly is carbon monoxide?Although it can occur naturally, in this context carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as gas, oil or wood all contain carbon. Normally, when they are burned with a sufficient supply of oxygen, the carbon oxidises and becomes carbon dioxide (C02). However, if there is insufficient oxygen, it is possible for the oxidation process to be incomplete and the result is carbon monoxide (CO).

Why is it so dangerous?Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous to humans. When inhaled, it is absorbed into the blood much more readily than oxygen. From there, it bonds itself to the haemoglobin in the bloodstream. This has the effect of reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Carbon monoxide victims die of hypoxia: oxygen starvation. Exposure to less than fatal levels of CO can also cause permanent neurological damage.

Important things to checkThere are a few basic checks you can make in the home from time to time to make sure there is no obvious cause of carbon monoxide or lack of ventilation: Look for sooting or discolouration and and around gas appliances, including boilers and water heaters; Pilot lights and gas flames should burn blue. If yellow or orange, this is a sign

of incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide may be being produced; Make sure flues and chimneys are clear and don’t contain leaks; Check that air vents in walls are not blocked.

Where do Roto products come into this?It is highly recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. There are many battery and mains-products devices on the market. Many are stand-alone devices that emit an alarm signal when CO is detected. However, it is also possible to have a detector wired into a ‘smart’ home automation system. Roto’s electromechanical drive systems enable windows to be opened, closed and locked remotely. The drive units can be connected to a ‘smart’ system so that windows open or close in response to conditions, for example humidity, rain – or carbon monoxide.

Immediate ventilationTherefore, you could have a system that not only sets off an alarm and warns you of carbon monoxide, but which also opens windows immediately in order to provide ventilation. The Roto E-Tec Drive is the ideal product for automated operation of Tilt&Turn and Tilt-Only windows.

Completely concealedIt is suitable for Timber, Aluminium and PVC windows and the drive unit is completely concealed within the window frame. When used with the Roto Designo concealed Tilt&Turn hardware, it creates a window on which there are no visible hinges or drive components.

The smart roof windowThe new RotoComfort i8 roof window can also be connected to a smart automation system in exactly the same way. Featuring a completely concealed drive, the RotoComfort i8 opens significantly more quickly than conventional electric roof windows. With a maximum opening angle of 45 degrees, the window provides a good level of immediate ventilation. www.roto-frank.co.uk

Cool Solution For Cold Store Construction

One of the UK’s leading producers of quality savoury and sweet pastry products has completed a £7.3 million investment in a state-of-the-art packing and despatch facility which benefits from the in-built strength and insulation afforded by XPS (extruded polystyrene) from Sundolitt.

McColgan Quality Foods has created 43 new jobs in Strabane, Northern Ireland by investing in the new facility designed to help meet a targeted 50% increase in export sales over the next three years. Achieving such success relies on the importance of reliable and accurate temperature control helped by Sundolitt XPS - the cool secret buried in the floor of the new 8,000sq ft factory extension where it not only gives high thermal performance, it is unaffected by freeze/thaw cycles and is also highly resistant to water absorption.

Sundolitt supplied two grades of XPS for the project to enable the flooring to cope with the varying load requirements including point loading beneath each static foot of the fixed storage racking of 120kN/m2, whilst under the central concrete base carrying the picking rails, the company supplied Sundolitt XPS300 giving a 140kPA over the long-term pressure and a compressive modulus of elasticity of 12500kPA.

Sundolitt XPS is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, the primary range having a thermal conductivity of 0.033 – 0.037 W/mK (EN 13164). According to the type of use, it achieves outstanding compression resistance from 200 – 700 kPa (EN826) and offers exceptionally low moisture absorption through its closed-pore system. This makes it a preferred solution in industrial floors such as cold stores and chilled warehouses as well as in a wide range of load-bearing construction applications with case studies at www.sundolitt.co.uk”

The main contractor was Woodvale Construction (www.woodvaleconstruction.co.uk) which was founded in Northern Ireland in 1980 and now operates throughout the UK. The company, which won a 2015 Sustainable Ireland Award, said that a key challenge was to ensure the project was completed without disruption to the existing food manufacturing facility. The project was designed by Mullarkey Pedersen Architects (www.mparchitects.net). Karl Pedersen said, “The creation of a modern food facility has its own challenges in terms of design and functionality. Every element and component of this building demanded our fullest consideration both creatively and technically and we are very proud of the result”.

Sundolitt XPS Sales Manager Bryan Mawer said, “In this type of food storage facility, XPS offers outstanding thermal insulation, strength and rigidity. It is also very easy to install, cut to fit on site and safe to use in a food approved environment. It comes in square or shiplap edge – the latter having the advantage of preventing thermal bridging and capillary action. For fast-track construction projects, our customers can be reassured that it is available ex stock from Sundolitt in the UK. It also has great environmental credentials - being a vertically integrated company, production is covered by Sunde Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO14001.

Sundolitt has introduced a new sampling system for contractors and merchants through which it is happy to give expert help and supply material samples on request. The contact number is 01786 471 586 or email [email protected]. www.sundolitt.co.uk

SE Controls’ Smoke And Natural Ventilation For Pretoria’s New Agrivaal Building

The new energy efficient Agrivaal building in Pretoria’s Tshwane Central Business District is using advanced natural ventilation and smoke control solutions from SE Controls to maintain a comfortable indoor environment while improving safety by ensuring escape routes are smoke free in the event of a fire. The new 10-storey office block integrates with the original 75 year old Agrivaal building, a site of national heritage importance.

The new building incorporates a range of energy saving technologies as part of its design and construction, including recycled materials, water harvesting, energy efficient lighting and the use of natural ventilation, which enabled it to achieve a prestigious 4 Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa. SE Controls Africa, based in Durban, worked closely with the project’s fire and engineering consultants WSP Consulting Engineers from the initial concept stage, as well as ventilation contractors, Robertson Ventilation Industries, to develop the combined high level smoke and natural ventilation solution for the building.

The system incorporates an NVLogiQ carbon dioxide sensor and environmental monitor for natural ventilation, as well as a SHEVTEC smoke control panel and 10 SECO N 24 40 chain actuators, which automatically open and close the centre pivot windows in the atrium to vent stale air or smoke from the building. In normal operation, NVLogiQ sensor monitors the temperature, carbon dioxide levels and relative humidity and signals the actuators to incrementally open or close the windows, if the parameters go beyond preset points.

In the event of a fire, the SHEVTEC control panel takes a signal from the building’s fire and smoke alarm system, which overrides the natural ventilation system and triggers the actuators to fully open the window to vent smoke from the building. www.secontrols.com

Gent Helps Bield Housing & Care Take The Lead In Fire Detection System Monitoring

Bield Housing and Care’s Bield Response24 alarm receiving centre (ARC) is one of the first facilities of its kind to provide fire detection system monitoring and management from multiple sites using Gent by Honeywell’s pioneering WINMAG software. Unwanted alarm activations are a big problem and cause a great deal of disruption. In March 2015 the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service announced that it will no longer silence or reset systems after a call out to grouped housing developments, as doing so wipes any data that could provide reasons why it was erroneously asked to attend. For Bield Housing & Care this was a costly problem, meaning that when a system required resetting a call had to be made to the fire detection company responsible for the site, and an engineer had to drive to the location and physically press the silence and reset buttons on the fire detection control panel. Glasgow based Rapid Fire Services was consulted to see if it could suggest some ideas to address the issue. The company’s Operations Manager, Neil Wilson, comments, ‘We have been a Gent by Honeywell approved system integrator for many years, therefore, we knew that Gent’s innovative WINMAG graphics management system would solve this particular problem, while also offering other advantageous features.’ Simple to set up and intuitive by design, WINMAG is an invaluable software tool for any size of network that allows for complete management of the fire detection and alarm system from a central location. It integrates seamlessly with Gent’s Vigilon life safety system to provide a graphical view of the entire system, enabling easy location of a fire in an emergency and allowing rapid decision making through event-based control of devices. Offering fault signalling, false and unwanted alarm event analysis and text-only options, WINMAG also provides central management of routine activity, providing central reporting and processing for events like fire, fault and disablement. Rapid Fire Services fully integrated the Gent software into Bield Response24’s ARC by having a device server fitted beside each Gent Vigilon fire alarm panel, which is given a unique IP address that enables it to communicate through the Internet. Personal alarm units are installed in the home and use a resident’s telephone line in the event of smoke/heat detection. This allows an emergency call advisor (ECA) to engage in dialogue with the tenant to ascertain the reason behind the fire alert. www.gent.co.uk

Heat pump manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric has just released a short animation which explains the new approach to heating and hot water provision now available from the latest addition to the Ecodan range of air source heat pumps. As the nation looks to build new homes to meet demand, the hot water requirements of these houses requires a different approach, to help reduce emissions whilst delivering warm and cosy places for people to live. The balance between hot water and heating is different in new built properties is different from older homes because of a reduction in fabric U-values and thermal bridging, which reduces the energy requirements for heating and makes hot water the dominant load. The animation explains how the new 4kW Ecodan QUHZ unit works to efficiently match the hot water requirements, whilst still meeting the lower heating demand of today’s well insulated properties. Thermoblock Premieres In Leicester Square Project

The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s stone façade. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need to stabilize and strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly weakened by previous alterations over the past century.

With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete. This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up the minimum interior space. As part of this, the project team elected to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing heat loss at the critical floor wall junction.

The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for cold-bridging.  They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks helped create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet the current Building Regulations and that the structure will endure for many decades to come. www.marmox.co.uk

Shackerley has demonstrated the versatility of its Sureclad® ventilated cladding offer by supplying an innovative engineered stone façade system for a challenging installation at Kew Bridge West, an exclusive development of 336 luxury apartments in North London.

The Lancashire based cladding specialist supplied 2400m2 of fully prefabricated Sureclad® engineered stone cladding in a natural limestone colourway and honed finish to provide a premium quality aesthetic for the lower storeys of the nine buildings that form the complex, designed by Stockwool and developed by St James, part of the Berkeley Group.

Two circular towers called for smooth rounded façades and Shackerley’s Sureclad® Hang On system was customised to cater for large format curved panels, cut to a radius from engineered stone blocks. In addition, elegantly faceted façades were required to clad curved elevations of adjacent buildings.

Shackerley and façade installation contractor Stanmore worked very closely together, developing bespoke solutions at every stage, from the façade designs to the meticulous scheduling and palletisation of the prefabricated system. Stanmore’s installers also visited Shackerley to receive expert training in the use of the Sureclad® system.

Construction Director at St James, Brian Paterson, commented: “Shackerley’s system was brought to our attention when we came to value engineer this project. The Portakabin Group Achieves UK Construction Industry First With New University Technical College Contract

The Portakabin Group has been awarded the £14 million design and build contract for the UK’s first university technical college (UTC) to be built off site. Opening in September 2016, the Global Academy will provide academic and vocational training for 14-19 year olds who want to work in the broadcast and digital media industries.

Designed by the Portakabin Group and architects Surface to Air, the building has a forward-thinking, innovative design to reflect the creative ethos of the new Global Academy.

Advanced off-site technology using a Yorkon building solution from the Portakabin Group will seamlessly integrate both modular and site-based construction. A significant proportion of the work will be completed off site at the Portakabin Group factory in York in order to meet the challenging programme for completion in time for the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

The technically-complex building is also designed to deliver a demanding acoustic specification for the broadcast studios, with triple glazing and specially-engineered air conditioning.

Commenting on the project, Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group said, “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the UK’s first UTC to be built off site. This is part of a really exciting regeneration scheme, which will create a landmark education facility to give young people fantastic, practical training for the broadcast and digital media industries.”

“This is a hugely significant project for the construction sector. It demonstrates the architectural flexibility of a highly engineered Yorkon off-site solution from the Portakabin Group and how an outstanding building design can successfully integrate different construction methods. It also illustrates really well how we can deliver an inspiring, animated and intelligent building in a very short timescale and on a highly complex site.”

The Global Academy will house a sports hall, theatres and a cinema, which will be linked to a four-storey modular building by a dynamic, full-height central atrium space. There will be extensive facilities for TV and radio broadcasting, including radio studios, TV studios, flexible teaching spaces, informal learning zones to facilitate interaction, a café and dining area.

The scheme is being constructed by the Portakabin Group on the heritage brownfield site of the Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The site will also require the Portakabin Group to carry out complex groundworks, extensive excavations for district heating, and the construction of a new sub-station.

University technical colleges are technical secondary schools for 14 to 19 year olds, teaching the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow. They offer a broad curriculum that combines an academic education with technical and practical learning. UTCs use the latest equipment and technology to provide an environment where students can thrive and develop the skills employers need. The governing body of each UTC is controlled by a business sponsor and a university.

Achieving High Performance Building Envelopes

System specification is crucial to success when developing an energy efficient, sustainable building. Delivering onsite energy performance as specified in the design brief is a ‘team game’ with professionals working together to achieve the required U-value, airtightness and Psi value rating. The devil, as always, is in the detail, or should that be detailing! In the past what was specified by the designer would not always perform as predicted - resulting in the performance gap, an issue highlighted in the Zero Carbon Hub’s report published last year.

As the leading innovator in the development and application of structural timber technology - Kingspan Timber Solutions is a pioneer in sustainable structural timber construction. Ensuring that process and performance are consistently enhanced, Kingspan Timber Solutions is leading the way in addressing the performance gap issue with an acclaimed range of high performance systems.

An example of this is the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel System, a structurally insulated panel designed for the infilling of apertures, or sheathing of the structural frame. This BBA and NSAI certified system at 142mm or 172mm thick can deliver Passivhaus airtightness values and can achieve external wall U-values of 0.20 W/m2K with ease, and down to 0.11 W/m2K or better if required.Fast, Cost Effective and Predicable As a lightweight solution, the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel

System supports fast track construction methods, reducing build time onsite. A three man team can typically install 150m2 per day and the requirement for scaffolding is reduced, as in most situations the systems can be erected using mast climbers. As a result the Kingspan TEK® Building Cladding Panel System can be up to 50% faster than alternative construction methods.

Manufacturing in factory controlled conditions enhances quality, decreases defects and reduces waste and time onsite – making the critical project plan more predictable and permitting follow-on trades to start work sooner in the build process. Kingspan Timber Solutions is project and performance centric. Through their extensive product portfolio, the company’s focus is firmly on value engineering and performance.

With a collaborative culture, Kingspan Timber Solutions are dependable construction partners who, by using a combination of the highest performing, most sustainable materials and components, design, manufacturer, assemble and project manage the construction of cutting-edge timber solutions. Their systems also include timber frame, structural insulated panel systems (SIPs), glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross laminated timber (CLT). www.kingspantimbersolutions.co.uk

Complex Hospital Building For Orthopaedic Services Is Constructed In Less Than Four Months

A highly complex, 4,200sqm two-storey ward and theatre building at Royal Stoke University Hospital has been constructed by Portakabin Hire in less than four months to help meet the increasing demand for orthopaedic services.

The £13.5 million contract is the largest in the 52-year history of the Portakabin Group’s Hire Division and the project is one of its most challenging schemes in terms of programme and site constraints.

The structure for the high quality patient facility was installed in just 18 days which included weekend working to minimise disruption to the hospital’s service provision as there were fully operational wards immediately adjacent to the new building. This construction solution allowed the project to be built in the shortest possible time to the benefit of patient care.

The purpose-designed scheme, which will be in use for the next five years, has provided 56 new in-patient beds, two large state-of-the-art, clean air theatres for all orthopaedic procedures, recovery room, ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ utilities, single rooms with en-suite bathrooms, staff changing rooms, reception, kitchenette, offices, 33-person ‘crash team’ lift, and an integral plant room.

The new Orthopaedic Unit is constructed from 124 steel-framed modules up to 14m long and weighing up to 9 tonnes each. These were installed complete with wall finishes, internal partitioning, mechanical and electrical services and flooring already in place,

further reducing work and disruption on this busy hospital site. The modules are built to permanent standards, comply with current Building Regulations and have a design life of 60 years.

The hiring of modular accommodation is a fast, flexible and cost-effective way for healthcare providers to expand or relocate services, particularly on constrained hospital sites and funded from revenue rather than capital budget streams. The approach also gives NHS trusts greater flexibility as the facilities can be dismantled and removed if patient needs change.

Complete, fully-fitted buildings can be delivered in a fraction of the time of a site-based construction solution. Critically, buildings can be installed with far less disruption to patient care and the solution is much safer and quieter as fitting out can also be carried out off site.

Portakabin Hire provides accommodation for wards, recovery suites, dialysis units, diagnostics, out-patient departments and treatment centres. All the hospital facilities are constructed to the latest healthcare best practice design standards.

For further information about modular healthcare buildings for interim and permanent applications, visit www.portanews.co.uk, email [email protected] or call 0845 401 0010.

Mapei UK Helps The Refurbishment Of Monaghan Shopping Centre

A complete system of Mapei products has been installed in the Monaghan Shopping Centre, North East of Ireland. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed, Epojet, Eporip, Planicrete, Topcem, Eco Prim T, Primer G, Keraquick, Latex Plus, Mapetex, Ultracolor Plus and Mapesil AC provided a series of systems to prepare the substrate, refurbish the existing floor and install Pamesa Ikom ADZ tiles.

Mapei was asked by Ostick and Williams Architects Belfast to provide a system of products for the refurbishment of the shopping centre due to movement in the substrate resulting in cracking and de-bonding of the existing porcelain tiles. The products were supplied and installed by Armatile, and included three main systems of Mapei products being used to repair the substrate and install new tiling on the 1,400m2 of retail and leisure space.

When all the existing tiles, decorative flooring and residual adhesive was removed large cracks in the screed were exposed. The first system of Mapei products specified was to replace areas of screed. This system of repair included Epojet, Eporip, Planicrete and Topcem. Cracks in the existing screed were repaired using Eporip and Epojet.

In several sections of the project a screed containing the Mapei Topcem binder was installed to repair the substrate using Planicrete to bond the new screed to the existing screed and concrete substrate. The second system of Mapei products installed was used to smooth the total area to a tolerance of SR1 for the installation of large format porcelain tiles. The screed was primed with Eco Prim T then, where needed,

levelled with Ultraplan Renovation Screed levelling compound. The third system of Mapei products was used to complete the installation of the Pamesa Ikam ADZ tiles. Around 1,400m2 of 600x600mm tiles were installed in ‘bays’ using Mapei’s Keraquick rapid setting flexible tile adhesive and Mapei’s Ultracolor Plus grey flexible grout with BioBlock® technology.

Mapetex, an anti-fracture membrane, which protects tiled surfaces from substrate stresses was fixed using a combination of Mapei’s high performance, flexible, S1, rapid setting Keraquick adhesive incorporating Latex Plus, an admixture that provides elasticity and improves the deformability of the adhesive. This combination of Keraquick adhesive and Latex Plus admixture was continued to install the tiles throughout the centre.

Mapei’s flexible, versatile, multi-purpose grout Ultracolor Plus and their solvent-free, mould resistant silicone sealant Mapesil AC was used to enhance the overall aesthetics of the new facilities. The project took nine months in total to complete.

Acoustic And Thermal Double-Act At Norwich

The A. Proctor Group has supplied the acoustic Profloor Dynamic Batten system as well as vapour permeable membrane Reflectashield TF 0.81 to a new low cost housing project in Trinity Close, Norwich for Dove Jeffrey Homes. The Profloor Dynamic Batten System is specified and detailed in a similar way to a standard batten in order to support the chosen floor finish, with the added advantage of providing effective isolation of the finish from the structure to reduce sound transmission. Profloor systems meet the requirements of the Building Regulations and Robust Details for impact and airborne sound. www.proctorgroup.com

Remmers Deliver Food Grade Flooring

Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered (www.graze.com). A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes. Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength and reducing the potential for drying shrinkage cracking. The screed was laid to falls and subsequently primed with 2 coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers Crete HF hard wearing polyurethane screed. www.remmers.co.uk

New Cross Joints By Dural

Movement accommodation is a serious consideration for architects and installers when laying hard flooring. Heated floors, large format tiles and difficult substrates all put extra stress on tiled flooring. A major challenge in managing these stresses occurs when a subfloor design creates a need for surface movement joints to intersect.

Creating a required four-way junction is technically demanding for an installer when on site, it is also time consuming and expensive. Located where sub floor joints cross and the surface joints intersect, the Cross Joint is anchored within the adhesive bed, (using the exact techniques as expected for intermediate movement joints profiles). The distance between Cross Joints is linked using intermediate movement joints. Cutting to size and length is a simple matter of making straight cuts as required. In comparison with forming a traditional four way junction, the degree of skill, effort and time required is minimal. A complete movement joint installation can be prepared and be ready for the tiling work to commence in minutes.

Dural’s innovative joints; provide Independent movement in all directions; are available in all materials, colours, effects & finishes; depths from 3mm to 30mm in stainless steel & 3mm to 50mm in Aluminium and Brass; are fixed the same way as standard movement joints; are extremely cost effective. www.colouredmovementjoints.co.uk

Looking For A Whitewashed Floor?

Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer.

The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low

VOC content and low odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell.

Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available.

As a Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath is part of Bona’s network of highly trained wood floor specialists - independent wood floor companies who have received extra in-depth training in the use of Bona’s wood floor finishing products. More information is available at bona.com

Craven Dunnill Expands Potential Of Wood-Look With Striking New Tile Formats

The preference for choosing porcelain floor tiles which replicate natural wood, rather than installing real wood floors, is set to become mainstream with the introduction of two new tile ranges from Craven Dunnill: Timber Plus and Timber Slim. Available in versatile new tile formats, these tile ranges make possible a variety of attractive floor pattern permutations and effects, including herringbone, chevron and off-set plank layouts. Competitively priced and made in practical porcelain, these wood-look tiles meet the rigours of daily life without sacrificing any of the decorative appeal of natural wood.

The Timber Slim glazed porcelain range is available in five different wood hues: white, beige, taupe, brown and grey. The narrow plank format of just 700 x 100mm is fundamental to the creation of patterned layouts such as the familiar parquet-style chevron, herringbone and other off-set designs.

In contrast, the Timber Plus glazed porcelain range is available in an extra long plank format of 1200 x 200mm. Available in white, beige, walnut, grey and brown wood-effect options, these long-board tiles are perfect for open-plan living: they minimise

the frequency of joints and achieve a spacious, uncluttered look.

Timber Slim and Timber Plus tiles are suitable for both floor and walls.

Whilst natural wood is an attractive floor covering, porcelain wood-look tiles are more practical and hard wearing. Key attributes include:• Low maintenance: porcelain can be easily

cleaned with a damp cloth and will not readily stain or scuff.

• Suitable for installing throughout the house, including areas where splashes and spills are common such as kitchens and bathrooms.

• Ideal for underfloor heating: porcelain is one of the best conductors of heat around for floors.

• Durable: porcelain is robust and withstands heavy foot traffic.

Craven Dunnill is a leading distributor and retailer of floor and wall tiles. The Timber Slim and Timber Plus new collections are the latest additions to Craven Dunnill’s award winning Renaissance Collection. For further information T: 01746 761611www.cravendunnill.co.uk

Marmoleum Modular ‘Zig-Zags’ Across The Floor At Neoworks

Attracted by the sustainability, ease of installation and vibrancy of Forbo’s Marmoleum Modular floor coverings, interior designers HLW have used an array of colours from the new collection in an elaborate zig-zag design at the new ‘City Tower in London’ offices of leading e-commerce company, Neoworks.

HLW were appointed to help transform the interiors into a collaborative environment to support the way Neoworks worked and reflect its brand values and ethos.

A key challenge was to clearly define different areas for specific activities, without building unnecessary walls and partitions. Creative use of floor coverings proved an ideal way to achieve this, and Marmoleum Modular was used to differentiate key communal areas, bringing colour, vibrancy and energy into the floor scheme.

In the main social space, the colours used in HLW’s funky zig-zag design include pillar box

red Bleeckerstreet, summer pudding, pine forest, purple and chartreuse. The flooring theme continues along the spine of the building with a more muted palette of greens applied to the quieter, more work orientated ‘touchdown’ areas at the opposite end of the office space.

Marmoleum Modular has helped to deliver the clearly defined spaces that Neoworks wanted, and thanks to the new Topshield2 finish, HLW’s client is also benefitting from a highly sustainable, durable floor covering with an easy cleaning and maintenance regime.

Fleur Peck, Associate at HLW commented: “We were keen to find a product that would be easy to install, with a colour palette that would bring energy and liveliness into the space. After being introduced to Marmoleum Modular, we knew it would meet our objectives and allow the installation to be more streamlined – the flooring was laid and ready to walk on in under a week!”www.forbo-flooring.co.uk

Recyfix® Monotec A New Monolithic Drainage System With A High Attenuation Volume

Hauraton Limited have introduced into the UK, RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system for the surface drainage of pavements, bicycle routes, car/van parks and roadways in and around residential, commercial and light industrial areas where the channels need to have high lateral strength, are capable of withstanding continuous compressive loads and where ease of installation is a major consideration.

The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

MONOTEC channels are offered in two nominal grating widths of 100 and 200mm, both suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The 100mm channels are available in three overall heights; 230, 280 and 380mm and provide channel cross-sections of 190.5cm2, 245.5 cm2, and 355.5cm2 respectively. The largest 200mm channel, which only weighs 16.2kg, has a cross-section of 746.1cm2 and so has an attenuation volume in excess of 74 litres per meter.

The three sizes of 100mm channels can be arranged in a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights connected by special transition adaptors that ensure the water drains away smoothly and quietly with the increased flow velocity playing a considerable role in cleaning the channel run. The step-fall arrangement may be desirable where there is a high risk of silting as the increased flow will help wash debris towards the system’s Inspection/Trash Box.

Ingenious grating design…In 2010 Hauraton introduced FIBRETEC®, a new design of moulded slot grating on their RECYFIX® PRO range of channels. This heelsafe grating has super smooth, elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, this feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. A grating with the same design has now been incorporated in the RECYFIX® MONOTEC which helps optimise its attenuation volume. The introduction of RECYFIX® MONOTEC means in any project, there are now three different types of channel in the Haruaton range that can be specified with the same grating design.

Tim Connolly, Hauraton’s Director of Sales and Marketing explains a major benefit of the new channels, “Specifying RECYFIX® MONOTEC allows hydraulic engineers and contractor’s wide flexibility during the design and installation stages by reducing the number of channel runs normally required to drain a large area. The reduction means less materials being used and fewer underground excavations, all resulting in an easy and fast installation procedure”.

RECYFIX® MONOTEC channels are certified in accordance with EN 1433. The CE symbol, external monitoring and the conformity declaration are the guarantee of a maximum technical and qualitative standard. Lugano Paving From Brett Landscaping Completes Clubhouse At Prestigious Royal Southern Yacht Club

The cool, contemporary lines of the Lugano flag paving from Brett Landscaping have helped to create an impressive yet welcoming exterior to the prestigious Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble, Southampton.Established in 1837 and with a long line of royal patrons, the yacht club moved to the Hamble in 1934 and has since created a contemporary, yet sympathetically designed club house. The large area surrounding the club is multifunctional, being used as an entrance to the club house itself, an outdoor seating area, and a walk way to the pontoons – and being the first feature visitors see on arrival at the yacht club it was imperative that it mirrored the high quality of the rest of the development. The Lugano flag paving range helped to create the required modern, elegant, and clean space around the yacht club. With a high level of slip resistance, helping to keep visitors safe, as well as exceptional durability, Lugano also met the functional requirements in an area with a high level of pedestrian traffic.Over the 600m² area a combination of both Silver Grey and Graphite Grey Lugano paving has been used. The light Silver Grey is the predominant colour covering the majority of the area producing a light and spacious feel, whilst the darker Graphite Grey has been used to denote walkways as well as creating a striking contrast to the rest of the terrace. www.brettpaving.co.uk

Transformational Paving

With the recent completion of public realm regeneration at the east London Brownfield Estate, Interpave has substantially updated its case study on this exemplary project. Brownfield includes modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger's listed, 'brutalist' concrete high-rise blocks - including Balfron Tower - from the late 60's and early '70s. Before regeneration, a key issue with the Estate was the variable quality and character of the urban realm, which was ill defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak. This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, works within the general layout of the refurbished and new infill buildings and adopted streets. The aim is to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed – bold and contemporary in character – using robust and high quality landscape elements. The project is characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on un-adopted areas, with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme silver-grey concrete setts – with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle – highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. Edges and transformations are defined by enhanced-finish concrete kerbs, some laid flush, others raised. www.paving.org.uk

Crunch Fixture For RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing

Ronacrete Approved Contractor Route One Highways have installed approximately 2000 square metres of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing in a Harvest Crunch aggregate blend to new student accommodation at Student Castle, Walmgate, York. The SuDS compliant permeable paving was laid to pedestrian and car parking areas. The project involved the regeneration of an under used two acre brownfield site, providing new office accommodation in the city centre for York newspaper The Press and city centre accommodation for students, freeing up family homes in the city for use by York families, in line with the council’s policy. The project also includes the redevelopment of the Wards warehouse, creates a new frontage on Walmgate with new 6500 square feet offices for The Press fronting onto Walmgate and Hurst’s Yard. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a strong, durable and porous pavement, the porosity of the system allows water to drain to the base and ensures that paths are free from standing water. This permeability makes the surfacing system SuDS compliant when used in a porous construction. A Quieter Learning Environment For The Pupils Of Francis Holland School

Selectaglaze secondary glazing aided in creating a warmer and more energy efficient environment at the Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, London. Built in the 1900s; the purpose built Grade II Listed building, like many older buildings, has timeworn windows which were thermally inefficient and draughty which could not be replaced. The old existing secondary glazing was unfit for purpose allowing noise to come in from outside. Selectaglaze worked alongside the building consultancy team at Daniel Watney to create a solution by using secondary glazing. When there is a gap between the primary and secondary glazing of at least 100mm the sound level can be reduced to around 45dB. The introduction of secondary glazing immediately increases the thermal retention of a building; Selectaglaze also used a low-E glass which can enhance the U-value to around 1.95. Thirty five secondary glazed units were installed in four different styles. Melissa Kent at Daniel Watney remarked; “The client and I are happy with the end result. The new series 15 is perfect for the school’s requirements.” Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing. Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant holders since 2004, it has a wealth of experience in working on all different building types.Selectaglaze will be at Ecobuild to offer technical advice on the benefits of secondary glazing. Commercial Office Conversion For Brighton Campus Features Marmox Tektalan Board Installation

Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have been consumed in the conversion of former American Express premises into a major new media centre for the University of Brighton. The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings. These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy. Within these spaces they help cut reverberation and present a smart, textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool, which enhances the product’s already impressive performance characteristics.

The woodwool element provides the strength and rigidity together with the unique appearance and sound absorption. Then the layer of rock mineral wool offers additional thermal and acoustic insulation while also being considered inherently non-combustible. In addition to an A2 fire classification, the boards feature an interlocking joint to raise the fire resistance to a two-hour period. Importantly the combination of rock mineral wool and woodwool remains vapour permeable. It is also recommend that an air gap is maintained behind the boards, which are easily fixed, in order to achieve sound absorption values above 0.9 uW. The Tektalan boards were supplied in the standard 600 x 1200mm size and painted a dark grey colour to conform to the architect’s design brief. 1112 panels were 85mm thick while the remaining 230 were 155mm thick. www.marmox.co.uk

Sika Liquid Plastics Restores The Past At York Theatre Royal

As part of a £4.1 million re-development project at the prestigious York Theatre Royal, Briggs Amasco Leeds and Sika Liquid Plastics delivered an outstanding roof refurbishment, requiring extremely complex detailing around 31 new roof lights. William Birch and Sons Ltd were awarded the contract and Briggs Amasco Leeds tasked with refurbishing the flat roofs.

The area that presented the biggest challenge for Briggs Amasco was the flat roof above the atrium of the theatre, a Grade II* Listed 1967 extension to the building designed by renowned modernist architect, Patrick Gwynne. This roof was of particular concern as it had an original 50 year old asphalt covering, which had clearly come to the end of its life.

Despite the roof being only 100sq m in size, the area had an incredible 31 roof lights to replace and work around. With so many roof lights in a small space, the detailing lent itself to a liquid product, and Sika Liquid Plastics worked alongside Briggs Amasco and building surveyors, W R Dunn, to make sure the roofing solution would be in keeping with the buildings heritage, while offering a stunning new feature in the atrium roof. Sika Liquid Plastics sent a huge sample to the Trust, which included the full roof light and surround, to make sure that the client was happy with the solution.

The complexity of this refurbishment became even more apparent with the results of the initial survey. It was revealed that an original GRP roof deck from 1967 was hidden under the asphalt – very experimental for its time. The original designs in the RIBA archive showed an intention for glass dome roof lights, which would have let light flood into the atrium below. However, the GRP deck must have failed, as it was quickly covered over by a timber roof deck and asphalt, with continuous metal roof lights with Georgian-style wired glass. Sadly, these roof lights only acted as a dust trap, becoming discoloured and offering very little light into the atrium.

Work kicked off in September 2015 to completely strip the roof, taking away the very unusual double build up and existing roof lights. A warm built up roof was installed, covered with Decothane Delta 25 – a thermal upgrade that tied in with clients requirements for improved sustainability.

Thanks to the refurbishment, the original design intention could be realised, with new state of the art Decolight Dome and Pyramid polycarbonate roof lights installed – making a massive difference to the light in the atrium below. Coloured-changing LED lighting around the inside of the roof lights also add a wonderful feature within the building.

Working to refurbish a roof on a building in the heart of York posed plenty of challenges. Owing to site conditions and proximity to the public, all deliveries had to be made to Briggs Amasco’s premises in Leeds and were then brought onto site on a ‘just in time’ basis. There were also many challenging details and interfaces that had to be overcome. Insulation had to be cut between the roof lights to be installed, the complex detailing was tricky but the liquid applied product made the job much easier.

The refurbishment meant that the original 1967 design intention for letting light flood into the top on the atrium, welcoming people to the building, could be realised.Guy Bowyer, Architect at York Conservation Trust said: “Sika have been excellent, they have had a positive approach from the start assisting us from initial concept stage right through to completion, we could not have asked for more. We also wanted a warranty for both the roof covering and roof lights, Sika were able to provide a 25 year warranty which is outstanding.” http://gbr.liquidplastics.sika.com
