Australian policy framework for English language requirements

For DIAC, English language is part of the risk management framework

for visas

The management of this framework depends on the education sector and institution

Universities currently have Streamlined Visa Processing (SVP) High quality providers in other sectors have been promised SVP

Under SVP, universities must confirm students’

English proficiency. Many English channels are used. Unis are required to formally verify scores from standardised tests.

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is auditing English proficiency issues in universities

in 2013

IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge CAE, Pearson PTE and OET can all be used for student visas requiring evidence of English

All private higher education, vocational education and English language providers must follow the Assessment

Level (AL) requirement for English language unless the course is part of an approved SVP partnership.

Students entering formal courses from AL3 and AL4 countries must take a standardised list listed by DIAC

Students from 14 specified countries can use paper based TOEFL results
