DART takes measures to ensure safety Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is adding a uniformed security presence on every train with a combination of police, fare enforcement officers and armed security guards. DART operates up to 42 trains, in sets of two or three rail cars, during its peak service. The uniformed staff will be on the vehicles during regular operating hours. The commitment includes 140 personnel. This was done by adjusting staff assignments and the use of overtime and security guards. DART has used armed security guards for several years in a variety of capacities. No end date has been established for this new initiative. This is the latest in a series of steps taken by the agency to increase the visibility of police and other uniformed security staff following some recent incidents that have happened on agency property. These actions include sweeps of stations by DART Police and stepped up enforcement of the agency's Code of Conduct in an effort to maintain system safety and the passenger's sense of security. While DART has long enjoyed excellent working relationships with law enforcement agencies within its service area, the agency and

those agencies are exploring ways to enhance that cooperation. DART already participates on a number of joint security and safety efforts with those agencies. DART continues adding closed circuit cameras at all light rail stations. That project is scheduled for completion in March. The agency will begin a pilot program for cameras on trains later this year. In addition, the new bus fleet scheduled to be put in service later this year, will feature vehicles with cameras. Also this spring customers will be able to send text messages to DART Police to report suspicious behavior. This is in addition to calling 911 or 214-928-6300.

Our Church school lesson was desper-ately needed in the body of Christ today. Our subject was “Fruits of

redemption” Gal 5:22-6:10. How often do we see the fruits of the spirit manifested among believers today? Fruit like Love, joy, peace, self –control, what we too often see are people desirous of vain glory (keep the spot light on me) provoking one another, envying one another, my brothers and sisters these thing ought not to be in the body of Christ. The lesson also reminded us that when a brother or sister is overtaken in a sin our first response should be how do I help my brother or sister get back on track, not making sure that everyone know about it, we have to be careful how we treat a fallen brother or sister because we

may be next, the lesson said you will always reap what you sow. The Morning message was delivered by Pastor L.T. Morgan from the subject “Chosen for Divine service”2 Chron.29:11;

The focus of the message was on the word “Negligent.” How often do things die due to neglect? You don’t have to do anything to cause the grass in your yard to die; just don’t do anything to keep it alive. All you have to do to stop your car from operating the way it was made to operate is do nothing to upkeep it .

Because this was our church anniversary the pastor pointed out that many churches have had to close their doors and cease to operate as a church simply because the membership

or the leadership failed to do what must be done for a church to remain operational. When the members fail to attend, or attend and fail to support the ministry of the church with their finance and efforts they have neglected the church and negligence caused it to cease to do the work of the Lord.

Be Blessed

Ask Karen Hollie:

Dear Dr. Hollie,

My husband and I havebeen having an ongoing ar-gument about one of myson’s friends and the influ-ence he may or may nothave on our son. My son is13. About six months ago,a family with their own 13-year-old son moved in nextdoor to us. Needless to say,he and my son, being the

only two teens on our street, became fastfriends. When first meeting this otherchild, I did not like him one bit. He wasdisrespectful and had the worst attitude youcould imagine. I use the past tense becauseI’ve noticed in the last few months thatthere has been some improvement. Hesmiles more, he’s using “yes, ma’am” and“no, ma’am,” as well as several other no-ticeable improvements. On the other hand,I think my son kind of picked up on someof his bad habits. He has picked up a slightattitude. On several occasions, my hus-band asked him to do things that never gotdone. My husband quickly blamed thefriend and doesn’t want my son around himanymore. I think that my son is more of agood influence than the other young manis a bad influence. So, that has basicallybeen our argument for the last two weeks, whether or not my son should be kept awayfrom the boy next door. Please tell mewhat you think. Should I be more cautiousbecause the other boy could be a bad influ-ence on my son? Or should my son be al-lowed to remain friends with this boybecause he influences him the right way?

Good or Bad Influence

Dear Influence,

What you need to do is have a talk withyour son. Congratulate him for being agreat influence on his friend. Let himknow he is a leader and how he has helpedthe other child develop great character. Also, as a leader you expect him not tochange and pick up bad habits. Tell yourhusband that you think it is absolutely agreat idea because you want your son to ex-ercise his strong suit, which is helping oth-ers change for the better.

Israel encounter with the Red Sea ex-perience brought them in contact withthe three enemies of mind; fear, worryand doubt.

One may ask “what’s so frighteningabout the Red Sea experience?” Well, the Red Sea was in front of them, andtheir enemies, the Egyptian army wasbehind them.

It was somewhat like being caught be-tween a rock and a hard-place. They felt

*Football Player Those arrested were caught selling both street and prescription drugs ranging from marijuana, cocaine, Xanax, ecstasy, hydrocodone and Oxycontin.

All students have been expelled from TCU and now face criminal charges. Charges range from misdemeanors to felony charges since some sells were made on campus which is considered a drug free zone according to Texas laws. Sells were made on and off campus, in dorm rooms and in the parking lots in front of 7-Eleven and Hooters. Two of the four Football players arrested told undercover investigators that the majority of the horn frogs are drug users. After testing the team 82 of the players all failed their drug test. After first being shocked, then hurt now head football coach Gary Patterson is just mad. He said, as a coach he has done the best he could to educate the member of his team. There are programs in place to teach team members what to do and

not to do to be successful in life. He gives them the tools to be upstanding men and to uphold the TCU name and traditions. In a statement, school chancellor Victor Boschini said, "We have a responsibility to ensure that our campus environment is free of such behavior. Today's actions highlight that responsibility," Boschini said. "The students involved were immediately separated from TCU and criminally trespassed from campus.” Last year Sports Illustrated released a study that showed TCU was the only member of the football’s Top 25 teams whose members had no criminal records. Sports Illustrated also reported that Oklahoma and TCU are the only schools that preformed criminal background checks on their recruits.

Among the multitude of adjectives used to characterize Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas, are stately, urbane, stylish, sophisticated, commensurate, lovely and picturesque. In more than two decades, Dr. Mitchell-Brooks, the first African American to earn a Master’s Degree in pure science from TWU and the author of articles that have appeared in the prestigious Journal of Biochemistry and Genetics, has contributed greatly to the life of Texas and the nation, while serving as the Director of the Martin Luther King Center, Executive Director of the Greater Dallas Community Relations Commission and Director of Public Affairs of DART. Now Dr. Brooks, at a time when many people want to spend their days at their retirement homes or traveling to see places that the constraints of their work realities prevented them from seeing, is about to embark upon a program at the Urban League that may way

change infrastructure of Dallas, and which is consistent with President Obama’s call for giving younger people hope and a future. “We listened and now we are preparing to meet the future needs of area industries and citizens through the construction of a 50, 0000 square foot Trade/Technical Skills Training Center as part of the larger Lancaster Redevelopment Project,” said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks. Standing before a model of the development in her office located at 4315 S. Lancaster, Dr. Mitchell-Brooks says that the project and its various components will significantly improve the lives of citizens in the city’s southern sector and surrounding areas. “We plan to teach people skills that will allow them to become productive citizens.” she said. Dr. Mitchell Brooks points out that the southern Dallas has a population of 523,000 with a median income of $13,000. This compares with a median income of $25, 0000 in the city of Dallas, she said. “The currently unemployment rate in Dallas is eight percent

citywide and over twelve percent in southern Dallas. Unemployment among youth between the ages of 128 and 25 in the southern sector is more than twenty percent. The figures of unacceptable and we are called to do something about it,” said Dr. Mitchell Brooks, a member of the St. Paul AME Church and one of the most respected and admired people in the city of Dallas. “Dr. Mitchell-Brooks is a tremendous individual whose entire life has been devoted to meaningful change,” said Clem Maddox, an executive with a local telecommunications company. “She is one of the people that other look to when they are in need of direction. She is a jewel in the Dallas community.” At a cost of $10.8 million, the Trade/Technical Skills Training Center will provide training in the fields computer science, construction, masonry, carpentry, roofing, welding, drafting, electronics and green jobs, Dr. Mitchell-Brook said. “We are working with the city of Dallas and with our real estate development partner, Catalyst Urban Development, on this project,” she said. “When it is fully operational, the Training Center will serve 300 to 400 trainees

at a time and help 800 graduate find job opportunities. The capital campaign for the training center includes partnering with businesses and individual who see and feel a need for such a program, said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks, who also serves as an adjunct professor in anatomy/physiology at El Centro Community College. In additional to sourcing funds for the Train-ing Center, Dr. Mitchell-Brooks still has to manage a staff of one hundred employees and administer a $9.7 million annual budget. The Dallas Urban League, recognized as one of the most effective chapters in the entire country, serve more than 60,000 clients. We are an organization that is based service and inclusion, said Dr. Mitchell-Brooks whose board of directors includes some of the finest minds in the city of Dallas. “We want people to become self-reliant and affirmed. That is our mission,” she said. “That is what has been placed before us. That is what we intend to do.”

Urban League remakes a city, one person at a time!

“The currently unemployment rate in Dallas is eight percent citywide and over 12 percent in southern Dallas.

I went to the Ellis Hobbs Desoto High School track meet, and I thought that we could have a couple state champion come out of the Metroplex. There’s a good possibility we could have a s tate champion in basketbal l , these predictions are girls and boys. I would venture to say that DISD has as many state championships in Track and field, and Basketball as any city in the state or country. You’re right if you say they should, we’re the second largest city in the state. We’re the second largest in Football too. You can’t say that about football because we don’t hold our foot ball coaches accountable. And more than half of our football coaches are not as tuned in to football as are our basketball and Track coaches. And quite frequently when we lose in these other sports it’s because of the football coach won’t let kids participate in track and basketball. The cohesiveness between coaches are non existent. If you have three schools in DISD that’s successful on special teams it will be a first. With all the speed in the area the suburban schools are scared to death to play the inner -city schools, until they find out, they can’t Punt, receive punts, kick off, receive kick offs, and don’t even think about Field goals. Special teams are 1/3 of the game Offense and Defense are the other two Every coach in the history of the game states, if you win any two of these you win the game. Like wise

lose any two, you lose the game. DISD coaches don’t know how to punt or kick field goals and won’t learn. Once they beat each other in Dallas their seasons are over. Some go a little pass that on sure talent. But when they lose it’s always because they couldn’t successfully punt themselves out of trouble and definitely can’t pick up 3points on field goals. In 1954 Jack Yates beat Phyllis Wheatley 9-7 on a last minute field goal. I started studying football in 1951 and can’t think of another last minute field goal. I can think of all kinds of existing victories in Track and field, and basketball no football. The guys can go to The Dallas Cowboys, SMU, TCU, etc. and learn the kicking game, but they won’t and until they do we won’t ever have a state champion in football. Those same coaches won’t let some of these fellows run track then the kid lose his speed, now he can’t play football. The talent that Dallas put in the NCAA, NFL and NBA. You would think they have a ton of State Football titles. They took the David W. Carter’s Championship. But Longview, Marshall, and Tyler has more Football championships than DISD. It’s a good thing these guys are not teaching our kids swimming we’d lose half of them. In swimming if you don’t learn it all. You know the results. Keep this article for reference when your favorite team goes for it when it’s 4th and 20 on their on 10.

It is no wonder that Dr. Deborah Williams has won several awards for being media savvy and an astute business woman. The Summa Cum Laude graduate of Tougaloo College, with a masters and doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia, has numerous accomplishments. While her husband was making headlines in the NBA, Dr. Williams was handling her business; working with the Links, Inc., publishing articles, working with foundations and establishing herself in the business world. Dr. Williams is also the founder of Behind the Bench: The National Basketball Wives Association. A former Mrs. USA and Ms. Tougaloo College; Dr. Williams is continuing to make her own headlines with “Her Game 2 All-Star Fashion Launch” during the NBA All Star Week activities in Orlando, FL. Featuring “soft cotton Tees, tunics, h o o d i e s , a n d T- s h i r t d r e s s e s embellished with laser, sublimation, and stones from size small to 2XL,” the

Platinum Collection was introduced at a star-studded, red carpet affair that includes a fashion show and the launch of the new Her Game 2 website, www.HerGame2.com. Jackie Christie, star of VH1's "Basketball Wives LA,” hosted the event, at the Disney Swan Hotel. During a recent interview, Dr. Williams recalled a time when she would go shopping for her female friends who were sports fans and she had a hard time finding items that were

more stylish and age appropriate, while also accenting the femininity that so many women want to display. Sure there was athletic wear that she could have purchased, but she wanted something different. “We have curves,” she pointed out, as she talked about sporting apparel that was unflattering to females. “I began developing a brand and it’s about more than sports. Women should have a choice in the clothes they wear. I want to empower women.” That’s exactly what is happening. She started with a clear mission and focus, moved up to becoming a NBA licensee and since 2009 the Her Game 2 line is featured in Macy’s Department Stores in New York. For 15 years, Her Game 2, Inc. has been an industry leader in producing top quality apparel, including officially licensed product for the National Basketbal l Associat ion (NBA). Designing, manufacturing, and selling a well-made apparel line to the nation’s top companies, have placed the company on the elite supplier lists of many of the country’s most prestigious

organizations, corporations and sports leagues. According to Dr. Williams some choice one-of-a-kind items were on sale at the event.Deborah Williams is on the move and that’s why the SpotLITE is on HerGame2.

CELEBRATING 52 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Page 10 www.elitenews.com March 2, 2012

By Mark Jones and Joseph Green-Bishop

As hundreds of luminaries and ordinary citizens gathered last Thursday in an Oak Cliff Church to say farewell to Jordan Randall Blair, his wife of 24 years, Brenda, sat in the first pew gazing at the casket of her best friend and comforter. The service started at 11 a.m. but those who came to pay tribute to Jordan at the Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church had been arriving for nearly two hours prior to the service. They came from all across the state of Texas and from across the country to pay tribute to a publisher and educator who was described by State Representative Helen Giddings as “an individual who was always involved and who gave so much to all of us.” Dallas County Court Judge Clay Jenkins called Jordan “our brother in Christ who left us far too soon.” Larry Duncan, The president of the Dallas County School Board of Trustees, where Jordan was a board member, said that Jordan was concerned with all of the children in Dallas County receiving a quality education. “In honor of Jordan, all of the flags at our schools are flying at half mast,” he said. Among the poignant tributes that were paid to Jordan came from one of his nieces, Candace Wright. “We called him Uncle Randy,” she said. “He attended every graduation of each of his

nieces and nephews,” she said. “He was a counselor, a friend, a c o m f o r t e r w h o inspired all of the cousins. We will miss h i m a n d w e w i l l always love him.”In a written tribute to their father, Jordan’s three children, Jordan

II, Harrison and Taylor said that they were delighted that God had given them a wonderful father whose life they will emulate. “Your love was sufficient enough for all of us,” they wrote. “We want to be just like you. We hope that we will make you proud. You will be sorely missed but never forgotten.” A number of the speakers thanked the Blair family for sharing Jordan’s life with the city of Dallas and the people of North Texas. “Jordan was a renaissance man,” said former Dallas Mayor Dwayne Caraway. “He loved Dallas and he loved people. He helped me to become Mayor of Dallas.” During his eulogy, Reverend Michael Bell, the former pastor of the Saint Paul AME Church in Dallas who came from Washington, D.C. to pay tribute to his friend, said “Jordan’s gift was his life. He was a people person who belonged to God.”

Nearly 100 members of the clergy filled the church, many sitting on the pulpit. More than one acknowledged the contributions that the Elite Newspaper has made throughout the years to them and their congregations. “He was a good man who walked with God,” said Bishop Gregory G.M. Ingram, the Presiding Prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, AME Church. Perhaps one of the more compelling statements was made by Jordan, himself, who wrote a letter that appeared in the celebration program…..”think of me as living in the hearts of those I touched. For nothing loved is ever lost and I was loved so much.” “I will miss Randy,” said Jordan’s father, Bill Blair, as he walked from the church after the two hour service. “I will miss him so much. He made me very, very proud,” he said as tears flowed down his face.

Some decades ago, when she was a small girl growing up in the blistering sunny surroundings of Orlando, Florida, Yolanda Gills was urged by her mother, Thelma and her late father, Henry, to make her life’s journey one that included at its core the vigilant pursuit of excellence. And pursuing excellence is exactly what Gills, the managing principal of Frazier Gills, P.C., a Dallas based full service accounting and tax firm has done. She has not only risen to the top of her profession, but she has recently made history by becoming the first African American woman to become the chairman of the board of the prestigious Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce. “While growing up I saw my mother and father working very hard,” she Gills, a graduate of the University of Florida and former executive at Ernst and Young, one of the world’s leading accounting firms.

She came to Texas in 1978 to start an accounting practice that she co-owned. She began her current business in the summer of 1991. Her list of clients is impressive. They include the Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, the Citizens Development, Center, the Dallas Urban League, the City of Dallas, the city of Plano, the Southern Dallas Development Corporation, Parkland Memorial H o s p i t a l , t h e We s t D a l l a s Community Centers and many others.“My approach to work and my profession has been to give my clients the very best service possible. I believe in excellence and I believe in delivering an excellent product to those who have enough faith in me to allow me to do some of their work,” said Gills. Under Gills’ leadership, her firm has developed an exper t ise in the g o v e r n m e n t a l a n d n o n p r o f i t organization sectors. The firm has vast experiences in performing local g o v e r n m e n t a u d i t s , n o n p r o f i t organization audits and financial and

compliance audits. “We believe we are a leader among local and regional firms in serving nonprofit entities in the Dallas area,” she said. A delightfully pristine, fashionable, and soft spoken business woman, Gills will head the board of the Oak Cliff Chamber which has more than five hundred members. “We are extremely diverse,” she said. “And that is very important to me.” The Oak Cliff Chamber is very important to the life of Dallas to this region,” she said. “Our mission is to foster economic development and to serve the business community in the Oak Cliff area and beyond,” said Gills

who has been married to her husband, Elbert, for 32 years. They have two sons, Jared and Jeremy. Among the other business leaders she will be working with at the Oak Cliff Chamber a r e B o b S t i m s o n , t h e organization’s president and Ed Oakley. Stimson and Oakley are former elected members of the Dallas City Council. “Business is very much about relat ionships,” she said.

“Being a part of the Oak Cliff Chamber a l lows bus iness

owners to make vital business connections. I learned that when I first joined the Chamber. When she is not in her office, with a client or with other leaders at the Chamber, Gills can be found at the West Dallas Church of Christ or with the Southwestern Christian College Beautification program in Terrell. “I want to help take the Chamber to greater heights,” she said. “We have had excellent leadership and I plan to continue that tradition. I view my mission is being consistent with the pursuit of excellence that my parents taught me when I was younger.”
