CHAPLAIN’S CHAT WITH DAVE

Kenya Kids Update You will remember, I went to Kenya during the last Christmas holidays. It has been nearly a year since then, so I thought I’d give you an update. After returning home from spending a week in a Maasai Village and a week in a city orphanage and a few days on Safari, I returned with stories to tell. You may have heard me tell the story of young Angelo – a boy rescued by my Maasai friend, Joseph. Angelo is at school and doing very well. His teacher says he is very bright! Final term last year, you donated hundreds of Kilo’s of clothing to go to the kids in Kenya. I took 30kg with me and the rest went to an op-shop in NNSW that is run by Education Care Projects Kenya – the people I went to Africa with. Every dollar raised at their op-shop goes straight to the kids. All this year, there has been a donation box at school. As the boxes are filled, they are delivered free-of-charge by a generous removalist company from Melbourne to Mullumbimby. Every pair of pants, shirt, shoes and everything else you have kindly donated go from my room to the op-shop and raise money for our friends in Kenya. On October 28th I ran a concert at my church called Kids4Kids. Children from around Melbourne sang and played instruments. During the program, a donation was taken from the audience. They gave over $1500! Many people signed up for the newsletter and chose sponsor children. Tomorrow, I am taking five full boxes to the removalists to send to the op-shop. Every box raises more than $100 for the kids in Kenya! Just this morning another bag of treasures was given to me by a generous parent. It went straight in the box! If you have anything needing to go to an op-shop, please put in in the box in my office and I’ll send it to the Kenya Kids Op-Shop. Keep changing the world, Dave

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY The focus for all grade levels this term has been coding. Foundation to Year Two have used Scratch Jnr on the iPad. Years Three and Four have also used Scratch Jnr. Years Three to Six have used Scratch offline on their laptops. Both the app and program look similar. They have similar sprites (characters) and both use coding blocks to create a script. Scratch Jnr allows the students to select from an existing background and sprite or they can paint their own. This encourages creativity and is a very popular feature with the children. There are six types of coding blocks, control, motion, speech/sound, appearance, repetition and end scenes. The students develop a script using these blocks depending on what they want their sprites to do. All grade levels had a task to complete over four weeks. The variety of animations produced was terrific. Scratch 2 or 1.4 is a program on the laptops which is more complex than Scratch Jnr. Once again students can select existing backgrounds and sprites or create their own. Years Three to Six can access the internet or their own Pictures folder as well. The variety of coding blocks is much wider and students can make their own variables if necessary. The scripts in Scratch are certainly more complicated and require the students to tinker to achieve a desired goal. Many students have worked through tutorials and set tasks to develop their knowledge of how to use this program. The final task was to create a simple computer game. Once again amazing animations have been produced reflecting each student’s imagination and knowledge. Coding has been an exciting and educational experience for everyone!

SAKG NEWS

Mosaic and Poppies Collaborations can bring wonderful results. This past week has seen the culmination of two projects in the garden. Our new mosaic is a collaboration between art and gardening. Installed over Cup Weekend, you can see our sparkly green mosaics on the posts of the grape arbour. Originally designed to enhance our poppy installation, the mosaic will be a permanent feature and will be extended up in the months to come. Many thanks to Mel Rowe for sourcing the beautiful tiles and kindly coming in on Sunday to install our creation. Many thanks to Carolyn Prothero for her generous creation of 60 beautiful handmade poppies. Installed over the arbour and placed in our garden bed they were the focus for a moment of reflection in the garden today. The moment was photographed by the Maroondah Leader so do look out for it in your issue. See you in the garden, Jane Humphrys.
