Round Up Review
Jennifer Manton
Yee Haa the Round-up is on again. Last weekend in November 2014 at Lady
Northcote School Camp, Baccus Marsh. If you haven’t booked in there is still time and plenty of
room, please contact Shane for the details. All meals and snacks included with accommodation.
Weather permitting the Friday Night Fire is once again on the agenda. Shane is on the job of
checking into the camp suppling wood and nominations going out for a Friday Night Fire Chief to
start it off after dinner and keep control. Perhaps a certain Uncle may excel in the roll?
Saturday Party Night dress-up theme is S. Shane has the music covered and I thought it might be nice
to add to the community spirit by bringing a simple party food plate to share if you can. Chips, dip
etc? Additionally to add some atmosphere to the large hall please dust off the Christmas fairy lights,
lava lamp or disco balls attach a name tag and throw them in the car.
Pictured below are a few activities that we haven’t participated in yet. Archery, Raft Building and
Ropes course. If anyone is interested once again please contact our Fearless Leader Shane to express
interest. Shane is also setting up a private Family Facebook Group so we can share photos etc. online.
Security Breach – Essendon International Airport –
December 1967 Jennifer Manton
December 22nd 1967 American President Lyndon Johnson landed in Air
Force One at Essendon International Airport, Melbourne, Australia for the
purpose of attending his friend, Prime Minister Harold Holt’s Memorial
Service. Holt was lost presumed drowned at sea in Port Phillip Bay
earlier in the month, sadly never to be found. Wandering the tarmac at the Airport were a pair of Airline Air-
Conditioner Maintenance workers. Without a full schedule and any question
of personal safety the unusually large jet proved too much of a curiosity,
Davies Family Whip Around, October 2014 - Page 3 of 14
so they ascended the forward staircase to take a closer look. After a
long journey most of the Presidents Aids and Advisers were found to be
napping in their seats.
The pilots however were quite alert making plans for their short
flight to the newly built Tullamarine Airfield to refuel for takeoff. The
tarmac at Essendon wouldn’t take the weight of such a large fully fuelled
jet taking off.
The pilots unperturbed at the intrusion welcomed the locals
enquiring where this Tullamarine could be found. Noel Davies helpfully
replied, pointing, that direction, as the crow flies. The bemused
American’s questioned the young Aussie, ‘As the What! Flies?’
Essendon Airport, Children’s Playground?
Dad didn’t think anything of what now would be the impossible, even then following the assassination of
President JF Kennedy security seemed quite lax? The casual attitude to security of the generation is perhaps why
I had only heard the storey for the first time a few weeks ago? Even more enlightening and possibly
entertaining was a visit from a fellow resident of Price Street the next day at Mum & Dads place. Kevin Rolfe,
who grew up opposite The Davies Family was more than happy to regale Emily, Ben and I with stories of
Essendon in the old days. Whilst I am sure all of our parents know Kevin to those who don’t, imagine our own
Anthony Paine growing up in Essendon in the 1950s and what he would have gotten up to. I was hoping Kevin
could drop by the Roundup to tell a few of his tales but unfortunately for us he will be Scuba Diving off the
coast of the Philippines in November where he spends a lot of his time lately.
As told by Kevin riding your bike up to Essendon International Airport and pushing it through a hole in the
fence was a common pass time. It only seemed to disturb anyone when you were actually riding your bike
across the runway??
Back then in the 50s the Hostesses used to hand passengers Barley Sugars and Minties on flights, these goodies
were stored at the Airport in big barrels. If you were fearless enough and could display enough charm when
asking the Hosties between flights, they would throw you a few handfuls.
Planes parked around the Airport were left unlocked of course, which meant any kid could just climb aboard for
a bit of fun and role-playing. So many switches to be flicked and a wheel to be turned and tested to its full
firebombing capabilities
The above are only a sample of Kevin’s many stories of the era. There was mention of been chased across
paddocks and beaten by disapproving landowners, angry Sisters at St Teresa’s using him as an example and on a
whim Kevin and friends purchasing and pushing an un-driveable vehicle home to the rathe of his Father. As
you may imagine with such a character the stories didn’t stop with his childhood. There were tales of
electrifying the Manager’s toilet seat at Mighty Muirs and on occasion fireworks set off in the same room.
Perhaps Dad could be persuaded to enlighten you on a few more details?

Blast from the Past
Anyone know in particular, which two families grew up with stories of;
‘I rode my bike there….’?
Stich & Bitch
Boys Club
Continuing the trend of the Saturday morning
workshop (mainly due to the weather) please feel
free to bring along a craft to demonstrate/share or
decorate hall with. Contact Jen with ideas or
requirements to co ordinate. As requested Neet
will demonstrate the lovely Christmas Baubles she
and Carmel make?
We can also use the session to add some colour to
the hall. Any streamers or balloons you have lying
around would be welcome.
I doubt it is news to many that Noel is the first-born
and first born children of Noel, Pauline, Catherine,
Michael, Carmel & Gary are Robert, Shane, Mark,
Paul, Steven and Luke. All boys!!! Grandma must
have been over the blue ball of wool with the first
Grandchildren Mark, Shane, Robert, Dean and Leigh
Perhaps one of these Boys can come up with a suitable
activity for Saturday morning at Camp? Sport?
Emily is checking the Family Tree to see if this
phenomenon goes back any further.

Grandpa Stories
Potatoes
Jacinta Somerville
Luckily Jacinta dropped around Price Street one afternoon to find the pictured potatoes (yes
they are potatoes) in the cupboard prior to Grandpa consuming them for dinner. Although
they looked fine to Grandpa, Cint strongly advised against eating them. Grandpa, Cint &
kids found it quite amusing, once he knew they had started a new life of their own.
Davies Round Up – Daylesford 2004 Kathleen Davies – as transcribed from video taken at the time
Bill Thompson, Keith’s father, we started at The Link, a pub crawl, and went down to
Puckle St … there were a few pubs there and down Mt Alexander Rd a bit. We did the other
side coming back and we finished at The Link. Bill was driving …we were good drivers in
those days… we finished up and Bill said “We can’t go home like this we’ll get shot.” He
was going with Amy (grandpa’s sister) and I was going with Dot of course (Gary – that’s
why mum always said you take after your father) (Carmel – Who was at home? Dot and
Amy, this was before you were married?) Yes, she used to come down there occasionally,
(lots of laughter) … it’s getting hard to tell this story! Anyway, Bill said “We can’t go home
like this we’ll get shot” so we went up to the aerodrome (Essendon Airport), there was
nothing much up there in those days only a ‘dunny’ way out the back, that’s about all. Bill
was saying all the time “Look Yorkie, you are supposed to make yourself get sick…” I said
“How are you supposed to go and make yourself get sick?” He said, (giggle) “Put your hands
down your throat.” I was sitting on the on the front bonnet of an old car we had, you know,
and I was sitting there and he was saying “Go on… put your fingers down” I said “I can’t,
anyhow I gotta go to the toilet” and the toilet was way out in the paddock, not like the one
you’ve got in your hut Steve (Steve – ours is not much better actually). Anyway so I went to
the toilet and Bill was waiting outside somewhere and he come in and said “What are ya
doin?” and I had been leaning up against the wall asleep! (Laughter) He didn’t get me sick
anyhow…so he said “We’ll have to go home and we’ll have to be careful. Maybe we had
Davies Family Whip Around, October 2014 - Page 6 of 14
better promise to take them for a drive” So this is on the Saturday and we took them for a
drive on the Sunday, and I was crook. It was hot weather, stinking hot Joan! (Carmel – that’s
no excuse!) and ah, anyway Bill said “We’ll take ‘em for a drive” and we finished up I dunno
where but it was amongst the orchards somewhere over Doncaster way. Anyhow we said
“We’ll buy some apples and take them home”… you know. (Gary – Now days we use
flowers) (Laughter). This orchard was just on the roadside you know, we were standing there
and the house was over a bit of a creek further over in the paddock. And no one was about in
the orchard like, and we were singin’ out to get their attention because we wanted to get some
apples off them. No one came over but they must have been watching us anyhow… we
started to get a few ourselves… and ah that’s when the bloke started walking out with a
bloody gun (Laughter) (Gary – that’s one way of getting them off the trees… shoot the
bastards) And so we ran up this hill which was as big as Ayres Rock I reckon, I didn’t feel
like climbing it (Noel – bet you ran up and your feet didn’t touch the ground) (Laughter) We
ran up this hill and we looked back, we could see he’d given it away, you know, and we had
to walk right back down the road where we left the car with the girls in it. They were alright
they got through it no worries. (Carmel – with no apples…did you get any apples?) No, well
Bill had said “if they bloody well don’t want to come over and sell us some apples then we’ll
take some” and that’s when the bloke came over with the gun. We didn’t get any. (Carmel –
so you weren’t found out that you had been on the booze the night before?) No, I don’t think
so! (Giggle)
Big Brother’s Bunch Rob, Nicole, Charlotte, 7 and Lincoln, 4 are at New Gisborne.
Jen, Ben, Mitchell, 8 and Ava, 4 are at Wonga Park. If any of you are out the Yarra Valley way please drop by
and with notice even stay the night. We have a spare room with a king size bed now dubbed the Hotel Room. I
am hoping to build a small craft business which I have named Maker Chic. So far I have only booked at local
market stall on the 15th
November. If I don’t sell anything expect to be offered some bargain handmade
Christmas decorations.
Kathy, Chris Riley 8 and Charley 5 can be found in Northcote. Charley will be Celebrating his 6th
Birthday on
25th
November at the Roundup. I am sure we can all make it a little special for him with a rousing rendition of
Happy Birthday!
Since everyone last caught up Chris’s band The Controls have had a debut gig at Bass Player’s House Party. It
was a glorious summers day with cocktails for all. They also have a 4 weekly residency at The Tote. A
headline gig at the Espy. And spent 2 days in the studio recording an E.P. due for release early next ear. Vocals
and overdubs are being worked on at the moment. Hopefully some more gigs over summer so keep your eyes
and ears open and show us some love!!!
Emily is not too far from Kathy in neighbouring Thornbury. Em has been putting in a few hours working on her
1965 Mustang lately and is looking for the perfect paint colour. There is a slab of beer on offer for anyone that
can find a current production auto paint colour to her liking, think Blood Red.
Mum has been keeping busy around home and enjoying meeting new friends, walking and annual trips away
with local walking club. Dad also has been busy around home with more projects than most people could
handle. The Little House (Hay bale Gatehouse) is looking great now days and almost finished? They recently
adopted a stray cat wondering the property after many pleading looks from Emily. Roo, now a house cat even
has her own custom build outdoor run, entering from the first floor dinning room window.

Leigh and Lisa have been busy with their family and working lives. Leigh is busy managing the family farm
and has taken on more responsibility in helping convert the farm from dairy to beef. He occasionally has a little
helper in Lexie, who enjoys helping with farm duties. Lis is not only busy looking after the kids but also
working part-time at Target in Kyabram. Whilst Baxter is in Grade 2 and his current intersests include Batman,
Lego and Minecraft.
Dave and Cate are currently residing in Swanpool (Have been for almost 2 years… must be a record!) and are
always busy with their brood (4 snakes and 30 chooks/ducks included) but the load has been lessened with all 5
kids now at school. Mackenzie is now a big Year 7 at Mansfield Secondary whilst Levi, Hennessey, Cesney
and Kinsley are in Grade 6, Grade 4, Grade 3 and Prep respectively at Mansfield Primary. Cat is working full-
time at Moyhu Primary School whilst Dave still works part time at ATEL in Wangaratta but has become busy
with his business Snake Smart, with call outs, frequenting the Mansfield Farmers Market and on the education
avenues. Don’t forget to follow the Snake Smart Page on Facebook. You may also see Levi helping to release
several snakes and catch Maureen partaking in some snake handling. Vix has flown from the coop, but not too far and is busy living and managing a 110 acre farm in Kanyapella
(east of Echuca). Looking to farm beef cattle, sheep and possibly grow hemp.
As for Dean and I, we are both busy working on our 1920s California bungalow in central Bendigo, when we
get the chance. It’s definitely a project but will be well worth the effort once finished. Dean finished up at
Solomon (WA) back in April and was fortunate to have some time at home. He and Matilda were even able to
sneak a trip to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in between. He is now at Curtis Island, east of Gladstone, QLD on
another non-family friendly roster of 4/1.
Matilda and Liney keep me extra busy with their usual swimming and dancing commitments but enjoy heading
to the farm most weekends to drive their Nan and Pop crazy as well.
Dale will be returning for a trip back home early next month but just falls short of the Davies reunion. Whilst
looking after his French Bulldog Drongo he’s still busy living in West Hollywood and building his production
company. For an example of what he has been doing check out https:vimeo.com/103871803

Aunty Francis O’Connor
Earlier this year we farewelled Mrs Frances O’Connor at the age of 101.
Ever the Lady, she will be missed Aunty Frances O’Connor was always as expected, a lady, polite, well dressed and good humoured. She kept a wardrobe full of elegant dresses and gloves that told of a bygone era attending local balls. Aunty also had a great love of crafting and cooking that kept her occupied, with beautifully handmade items all around her home. Even if not normally appreciated now days, her 1970s crocheted toilet roll holder delighted Ava, 4 which she named Toilet Barbie. The mass of unfinished projects left behind can be seen echoed in the current generation with a passion for building, crafting and perhaps hoarding passed down through the family. As told at her 100th Birthday prior to moving for work Aunty had only been in the city of Melbourne proper, once with Mum at the age of nine, but received her first one and only doll, bought at Myers. Aunty Fan kept and cherished the memory of the doll her whole life. Whilst Aunty’s doll now 93 was looking worse for ware she was fortunately rescued by Aunty Rhonda Davies who took her to the Doll Hospital in Malvern and is now pictured above in all her splendour. Perhaps of interest, there is a link below to newspaper articles from 1913 reports of the tragic shooting death of Aunty Fan’s beloved husband Bill’s brother Phillip. The storey of Phillip, killed at the age of 10 is reported in absolute detail, a sad and informative window into the past. Aunty held keepsakes of the be grieved family including locks of hair from all three boys and letters Phillip wrote home from school, which have now been returned to the O’Connor Family. Phillip was most interested in the upkeep of his gun when writing and the promise of hunting on the farm during school breaks.

Pine Hill
Sadly 2014 has farewelled the last member of Grandma Dot’s generation with the loss of her sister-in-law Mary Clancey. This has also meant that the family farm at Pine Hill which holds so many memories for the Davies Children is currently uninhabited and awaiting it’s future.

I went overseas which was meant to be a 9, week trip in June but had to finish 3 weeks into it as I
dislocated my knee dancing in Rome (after a few to many drinks lol). I got to visit London, Paris,
Swiss Alps, Avignon, Barcelona, French Riviera, Monaco, Florence, and Rome. I spent 5 nights in
Venice but only got to see the resort I stayed in and the hospital.
I was half way through my Top Deck Tour.
My favourite city was Rome and the highlight was Skydiving out of a helicopter in The Swiss Alps in
the town of Lauterbrunnen.
I'm still recovering from the knee injury but it's coming along well now :D

LIFE PHILOSOPHY AND BEER A meteorology professor stood before his Meteorology 101 class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty glass mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a jar of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar and of course the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous yes. The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and then proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the grains of sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things -- your family, your partner, your health, your children, your friends, your favorite passions -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. "The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play another 18. "There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."
