This month’s Update will focus on the seniors and their final plans before they leave Riverside High School on June 16th. Seniors, you should choose your courses for your first semester of college and you should be in touch with your college of choice to confirm your place in the residence halls. It’s not too late to apply for scholarships, so please check the Scholarships section of this newsletter. Guidance Counselors will be entering Senior English classes on Friday, May 13th. We will be discussing Post Graduation Plans. Juniors, this is the time for you to plan your summer college visits. Continue to use the Guidance Website to acclimate yourself with vital information regarding your future.

SAT and ACT Test Dates Just another friendly reminder from the Guidance Office: If you plan to take the June 4th SAT, you may still register until May 25th with a late fee. If you plan to the June 11 ACT test, you may register until May 20th with a late fee. If you have any questions, see your counselor before the deadline!

Rowan College at Burlington County Academic Excellence Scholarship This scholarship is designed to provide an opportunity for post-secondary education for students who want to attend RCBC and who excelled in their high school career. The eligibility criteria is as follows: Recipient is to be selected by the high school counselor Recipient must be a graduating senior for 2016 who is in the top 15%--25% of his or her graduating class and has a minimum GPA of 3.0 Recipient must complete an on-line application to RCBC and apply for admission as a degree-seeking student Recipient must register for 12 credits each semester Student must submit 1 letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor to attest to the individual’s ability to pursue a degree of higher education Recipient must write an essay explaining his or her career aspirations and how a scholarship would assist in accomplishing these goals. Colleges and universities all over the nation offer summer programs. Some programs are academic; other programs focus on developing leadership. Whatever the focus, these summer programs are a great way to broaden your knowledge and prepare for college. Check out some of these opportunities. Young Naturalist Program, hosted by the Burlington County Park System, is a free summer program for ages 13-17. This program will allow teens with an interest in the environment to develop a greater appreciation of the outside world and experience all that nature has to offer in the Burlington County Parks System! No homework, no grades, no tests, no pressure, just fun outside. Those looking to potentially pursue a career in the natural sciences can gain valuable field experience and begin building a résumé. This July, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is offering Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering, a 5-week program. Summer Video Institute at DeSales University, Center Valley, PA. SVI offers students an introduction to the theories and techniques of digital movie making. Go to the guidance office for the application. Norwich University offers Adventure Training, Survival Training, Team Challenges, and Leadership Instruction. Request more information from flc@norwich.edu Pinelands Preservation Alliance and the Bonazzi Foundation for the Promotion of Science Education are pleased to present the 10th Annual Life Science Field Training Institute. Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ, offers Summer Scholars Program, which consists of one-week programs throughout the summer. The summer program is open to all high school students who will be able to choose classes from a variety of majors such as veterinary science, forensic science, fashion design, studio arts, computer game design, TV production, and digital photography.
