Coles Crossing Yorkmont Drive 2nd Annual Halloween Block Party

“Car!” might be the first thing you hear as you pull onto Yorkmont Drive, a street in the Cottage section of Coles Crossing Neighborhood. This is not because our street is littered with the newest and best vehicles money can buy and we love our cars nor is it because the adults living on Yorkmont have car envy. It is because our precious children ride their bikes, scooters, skateboards, run around, hit a ball (any kind of ball), tackle each other and from time to time catch snowflakes on their tongues in the middle of our street. It is an unwritten rule, that as an adult, resident or not, that if a car comes by it is your job to alert the children; “Car!”

Life on Yorkmont has been referred to by many as “Life in the 50’s.” It’s where life’s most cherished memories of childhood are tied up in the little rituals of everyday street play. If any resident on Yorkmont Drive were to close their eyes and listen,

every voice could be identified. What street has that as a tag line? Whether it is an impromptu game of kickball in the street where Dads are still in their ties, or a neighbor borrowing a cup of sugar or milk from another, living on Yorkmont Drive is truly a community. The street has become an expansion of our homes, where we share, teach, grow, learn, serve, give our best to one another without praise or fanfare- because what you put in one day will be there later, ten fold, when life throws your home a curve ball.

The 2nd Annual Halloween Block party was just another example of this 1950’s mentality. The concept generated last year, in 2009, when the idea of just going back to basics was at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Not a lot has to be spent to have good ol’ fun. So each house hosted a “booth” of vintage games- Cake Walk, Football Toss, Soda Bottle bowling and

many others were created from items at home- the focus being on fun, rather than expensive party favors or extravagant decorations. This year, flyers were made and distributed to all new comers, welcoming them to join in the tradition. The attendance doubled! Neighbors came out by the dozens, along with a ton of Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and family friends. As the excitement built, so did the recollection of last year’s memories, as well as new ones. The children painted signs for the booths after school~ Cakes, Cookies, deserts of every kind were dropped off by everyone, in anticipation of the best Cake Walk ever seen! This year, Hayrides were added and turned out to be the highlight of the event. Giddy children ran from home to home, taking part in decorating cookies, tossing footballs through ghosts or pumpkins, making crafts, dressing the scaracrow, getting a tattoo at the Yorkmont Ink tattoo

parlor, hitting a pumpkin pinata and finally lining up for the Annual Costume parade! The childrens’ costumes, many homemade, were celebrated and awarded for the Cutest, Goofiest, Scariest, Most Original and even Sweetest! This year’s winners were Madison Chaisson and Katie Campbell for Most Original, Julia Lingo a Ozzy Osbourne won for Scariest costume, Jack Freeman was the perfect Mario and won Goofiest, Cutest Boy went to our little SWAT man Joshua Treadway, Cutest Girl for a second year in a row went to Hayden “Ariel” Corbitt and of course, the sweetest went to our newest member of the street, Anna Grace McConaughey! is proud to announce the second show in its Main Stage Season, Sherlock Holmes, The Final Adventure by Steven Dietz. Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure will prove to be quite the theatrical experience. Audience members will be transported to the Baker Street Jazz Club where they will be treated to beverage and snack service as they enjoy live jazz music, singers, and the play itself in a genuine 1930’s atmosphere. This updated version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories follows familiar characters Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Irene Adler, and Sherlock’s arch nemesis Moriarty in what could be the famous detective’s final mystery and adventure.

The production will take place in the Cy Woods High School Auditorium January 26-29 at 7:00. Tickets are $10 for students, $12 for Adults, and $20 for VIP priority seating with complimentary beverages and snacks all night long. Tickets will be

THE COLES CONNECTIONFor one solid day, you couldn’t sense any sign of modern life with

cell phones, texting, laptops on wi-fi; what did appear was neighbor after neighbor talking, sharing, laughing, snapping memoies of the kids running from home to home; enjoying the Halloween holiday like we did as children. Residing in the Cottage section, front porches are full almost everyday with neighbors sharing their woes or wins of the day,

where many homes have an “open door policy”. One dear neighbor, Mike, calls a committee meeting for ‘adult’ beverage time while a couple of porches down, some of the ladies are discussing this month’s book club selection or what their plans are for dinner. This is why people move to this neighborood; it’s like no other and just one of the many cherished traditions of this street is the Annual Halloween Block Party.

Cypress Woods hS Thespian Troupe No. 7050

The Cypress Woods High School thespian troupe No. 7050 collected 1,895 pounds of canned and dry goods from the Coles Crossing Community for Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) as part of the International Thespian Society’s “Trick or Treat, So Kids Can Eat” food drive. “Trick or Treat, So Kids Can Eat” is a new national community service program for International Thespian Society member schools to collect canned and dry goods for local charities and food banks. Students from Cypress Woods participated in the Texas program, in which thousands of pounds of food were collected by theatre students to help their local community. “We are proud of our students and the contributions they make both on and off of the campus,” said Cypress Woods theatre arts director Tim Estelle. “The ‘Trick Or Treat, So Kids Can Eat’ campaign is something that all of our students are passionate about participating in, and it’s an honor to work with such thoughtful and generous students in this capacity.” The International Thespian Society is a division of the Educational Theatre Association. The ETA is an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and strengthen theatre education as a means of lifelong learning. The Association’s major areas of effort-educational development, teacher development, and advocacy- serve to accomplish this mission by helping to improve the learning environment in the theatre arts.

local girl Scouts Celebrate founder’s BirthdayBirthdays were the theme when Girl Scouts from the Compass

Rose Service Unit held a skate bash at Champions Rollerworld in Spring in October. The occasion was Girl Scout founder Juliette Low’s birthday. Approximately 200 girls from Sampson, Black and Farney Elementary schools and Goodson Middle School skated in celebration.

In honor of Low’s memory and in the spirit of scouting, the Girl Scout troops assembled 17 birthday boxes that were donated to Boys and Girls Country.

Birthday boxes contain everything a parent might need to throw a fun birthday

party: decorations, cake mixes, candles, paper goods and party favors.

Girl Scouting strives to build girls of courage, confidence and character. The girls of Compass Rose have shown that they are indeed making the world a better place.

Cy-fair Republican Women Sponsor Walker Elementary

Cy-Fair Republican Women volunteer for many different causes throughout the year but one of their favorite ways to lend a helping hand is by spending time with the students at Walker Elementary School. For the past five years, this women’s club donates their time and extra dollars to this CFISD underprivileged school. In September, the club distributed Constitution Books to seven 5th grade social studies classes. “Last year, 5th graders used it on Constitution Day and later in the year when they studied government,” said CFRW club President Mary Moss. “We take a lot of pride in helping this school out where we can and strive to make a difference in the lives of these kids.” Currently, Cy-Fair Republican Women are sponsoring a contest for the school, entitled “What the Constitution Means to Me.” Fifth graders will write a one page essay on the subject and submit it to their teachers who will then select the top essay from their class. The best essays from the school will then be submitted to CFRW who will ultimately pick winners and present them with a twenty five dollar

gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Winners will be announced at the school on December 8. This is also a day where CFRW will present all third graders at the school with dictionaries. “The dictionaries are wonderful. They contain a great deal of valuable information, such as, maps, information about our presidents and our flag, a multiplication table, and a periodic table. For many, this may be the first book they’ve ever had in their house,“ Moss said. Cy-Fair Republican Women donate their time to other causes as well. “We support our troops through Operation Interdependence,” Moss said, “we collect money at our monthly meetings as well as toiletries . We also have an ongoing campaign to hand-crochet beanie caps to wear under their helmets and to keep them warm.” Cy-Fair Republican Women meet the second Tuesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. and is open to all interested women. “iVolunteer”! Do you? Or a better question would be “Do you want to volunteer?” And if the answer is “yes” or even “maybe”, here’s the perfect group for you. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These dedicated individuals, who give freely of their time and resources, impact the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a diversity of skills and knowledge in its community.

The district VIPS Executive Board spearheads the business of the VIPS. This board is comprised of volunteers elected to take on specific responsibilities offering support, guidance, and training to all volunteers in the district. The VIPS Executive Board meets monthly to evaluate and address the needs of the district and distribute information relating to volunteer and community activities and strengthen parental involvement in education.

Christmas is a time of joy, happiness, and goodwill. It is a time of giving and helping those who are less fortunate than us, especially impoverished children. For over half a century, one organization, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, is the unchallenged leader in looking after America’s needy children at Christmas. Though we know that gifts aren’t the true meaning of Christmas, a child’s expectation of a present from Santa is their innocent definition of hope. And, to try to bolster hope in our world is the least we can do. Do you remember counting the days until Santa arrived? Then, lying quietly in your bed on Christmas Eve hoping to hear reindeer on the roof? As adults, we cherish those memories, but for children waiting in their beds this Christmas, the worries of no presents under the tree can be all too real. Jobs have been lost and media reports continue to deliver

unfavorable news for many families and even the littlest children are frequently aware of the struggle to put food on the table. The ultimate success of Toys for Tots depends on the support of the local community and the generosity of people, such as you, who help the U.S. Marines carry on the tradition of delivering toys to children who might otherwise be forgotten by donating toys and funds to purchase toys.The Toys for Tots campaign in our area is being conducted once more by the Marine Corps League Tijerina Detachment #1295. This Detachment is named after and in

honor of James R. Tijerina, Katy High School Graduate, who died serving his country in Karma Iraq. All toys and funds collected remain in our local area. The toys are distributed through local assistance agencies and all families are screened and vetted. This year we are proud to include the children of our local military who are presently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you would like to participate, please drop off a new unwrapped toy in the one of the toy bins located at the following Fairfield locations: Fairfield Chiropractic, Fairfield Recreation Center, Jitterbug Cafe, Kids R Kids or RE/MAX. The collections bins will be set up from November 15 thru December 17, 2010. The ages of the children are from infant to 17 years of age (as long as the child is in school).
