Origins of Africare Founded in

1970 in response to The Great Sahelian Drought of 1968 which sparked a widespread food crisis in the country of Niger

Africare began relief efforts through food assistance and health care activities

As conditions improved, Africare expanded its assistance from drought relief to long-term rural development, and extended its work into neighboring countries

Challenges Confronting Africa HIV/AIDS is decimating

African societies, especially in Sub-Saharan. 72% of Global AIDS death are represented in this region

Rainfall is becoming increasingly unreliable. Currently, some 25 million people are facing starvation in southern Africa and the Horn of Africa

malaria deaths occur in Africa. Approximately 1 child dies every 30 seconds

The average African household where Africare is present is only able to produce 50% of their food needs

Political instability and civil war continue to disrupt development

HealthImproved Community Health Project (ICHP), Liberia

Dec 2007 Report

Largest Community Health Development Project in Liberia- A $10 million USAID funded project.

GOAL: ICHP aims to increase the use of primary health care services through the participation of civil society.

• ICHP Manages 37 clinics in 3 counties

• Africare offers support from essential drugs, staff stipends, medical supplies and equipment and, PHC services including reproductive healthcare :immunizations, childcare; nutrition; control of diarrhea disease in children; etc.

• ICHP developed malaria control BCC strategy for Liberia
