Dear friends,New beginnings are always exciting and full of surprises. For me, my first year at Beth Jacob has been both of these. My family and I feel so lucky to be a part of this community. I’ve been privileged to be with you during happy occasions as well as sad ones: births, britot, namings, bat and bar mitzvahs, weddings, conver-sions, funerals and unveilings. We’ve had the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat and holidays together, as well as the routine weekday events. You have welcomed us into your homes and your community, and made us feel truly at home. My grat-itude goes to the wonderful office
staff I look forward to working with day after day, our cantor who is both my colleague as well as my friend, the presidents and board members I’ve worked and continue to work with, and all of you. At the onset of Rosh Hashanah we sing a poem (Achot Ketanah/Little Sister) with the refrain, “Let the outgoing year end with all its curses; let the new year begin with all its blessings,” but to me, though admittedly challeng-ing at times, my first year of Beth Jacob has been filled with so many blessings that I only look forward to it getting even better. I was four or five years old when I first starting saying that I’d be a rabbi when I grew up, and I never changed my mind. I appreciate all aspects of this vocation, but espe-cially when I get to work with youth and the elderly, as well as when I can apply my training in creative, excit-ing ways, keeping Judaism relevant in a fast-changing world. Some of the events I am particularly proud of this past year are: Our Purim dance performance, “Prophetess”, which involved people from different age groups coming together to learn about an often-unknown topic in
Judaism, and presenting it to the congregation in a fun and unexpect-ed way; our legal symposium, “The Practice”, where congregants with legal expertise joined me in discuss-ing civil-legal and Jewish-Talmudic takes on the archaic form of revenge killing seemingly found in the Bible; our “Wet and Wild” Kabbalat Shab-bat service in which we combined the Friday night traditions with a barbecue and pool party, most-generously hosted by Lowell and Cindy Richter; our panel discussion on physician-assisted death which took place Shavu’ot night; and our ongoing, hugely popular, lively Rosh Chodesh musical services at Shalom Village, which see young people joining together with elderly mem-bers who find it difficult to attend regular Beth Jacob services. The common theme in all of these is something I believe is crucial to the survival of Judaism: recognizing the full, complex and diverse lives of the people who make up Beth Jacob, and providing a forum allowing them to share all those hidden talents, memories and experiences in a way that enriches our Jewish lives as well. If all we
wanted from our shul was for it to be a museum of what Judaism once was, Rabbinic talent would not be needed. What makes me proud to be Jewish is seeing that Judaism’s values remain eternally relevant. What I enjoy about being a rabbi is the con-stant challenge to find novel ways to showcase how we already live by and respond to those values, and can do so even more. In the Musaf prayer of Rosh Hashanah, we read “Ve’yitnu lekha keter melukhah” – “and they will give You the crown of sovereignty,” which sums up one of the main themes of the day. Year after year, we are called to the synagogue on Rosh Hashanah to re-crown God as sover-eign of the world. While Judaism be-lieves that God would remain ruler of the world regardless of whether humans perform this yearly corona-tion ritual, it still believes that it is crucial that we do God this service. The beauty, though, is that each year we are able to give God a crown that is different from the previous year’s. And that Judaism believes that God is delighted to receive it. Shanah Tovah u’metukah.

THE RABBIa word from
HaTalyan (The Hangman) tells the story of Shalom Nagar who likes to scatter wise sayings such as "Man is created to improve himself," and "We're in this world as tenants. The only thing we take with us is our good deeds." Nagar, it turns out, was involved in Eichmann's execution in 1962. This turned out to be a watershed in his life; he became very religious, something that showed through in his friendly actions guard-ing prisoners taken during the Six-Day War in 1967. Alongside regular visits to the synagogue and living according to Jewish ritual, Nagar's religion means striving for simplicity and the practice of a meek and mild form of humanity. He constantly tries to see things from the points of view of non-Jewish inhabitants of Israel and the surrounding countries. Film is 60 minutes in length in Hebrew with English subtitles.

THE PRESIDENT
2
A word from
Welcome back from the summer. It’s amazing how time flies. My first year as co-president of the shul has brought me closer to the Beth Jacob community and to my own Judaism. I’ve seen wonderful acts of kindness from many members of our com-munity and look forward to my next year in the role. Anne Sanderson has recently resigned from her position as co-president of the Beth Jacob board. I would like to thank her for all of the time and effort she put into making Beth Jacob a better place for all of us over this past year. After a year in the role, I can tell you that doing this type of work isn’t always easy (I know say-ing that won’t bring me any closer to finding a successor, but it is true). One of this year’s projects has been the renewal of our Sifrei Torah. Two were shipped to Israel for repairs and have been returned to us in ‘like new’ condition. Based on the assess-ments and repairs, one of the two
that were renewed, one was originally written in Germany and was written between 1910 and 1920. The other was written in Romania in the 1930s. The renewal of these Torahs was made possible by the donations and support the community shows for our Book of Remembrance. Those donations con-tinue to leave a wonderful legacy for the families of the present and future! For those who don’t know, (since I know I didn’t) a Torah scroll has 304,805 letters in it. If even one of those letters is missing, malformed, or incomplete, the entire Torah is not fit for use in a synagogue service. If there is no intention of ever fixing the Torah, that scroll is supposed to be buried with the same respect shown to a deceased person. When we sent the Torahs to Israel for repair and preservation, we asked them to leave a number of letters incomplete, so that the final act of turning these non-kosher Torahs kosher again could be done right here, in our synagogue, by our own members. Tradition says that one who completes even one single letter in a Torah scroll is considered as having written the entire Torah scroll, him or herself, making this a great mitzvah and opportunity for our community. In each Torah we left nine letters incomplete. One of them will be completed by the children in our
Hebrew school on September 21st, in advance of being used over the high holidays. Please refer to the notice below. The second Torah will be completed by a donor family and rededicated in November. Stay tuned for a special Shabbat where both of these new Torahs will be on display late in the fall. Our plan is to renew one additional Torah over the next year, once again through the support of the Book of Remembrance. As part of this renewal, we would like to give every member of our community who is interested, the opportunity to help completing this Torah. We are asking for donations of $72 per letter and ask all interested parties to contact the office so that we can be sure there are enough letters available for everyone who is interested. Please contact Hanna or a volunteer in the office in order to join the list. In the coming months we will be nominating a new board (with many familiar faces as well as some new ones). We hope you can all join us at our AGM which will take place in November. If you are interested in joining a committee of the board, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. We are looking to include even more people on our committees in the upcoming year and would love for you to join us!
The High Holidays have always been about ‘teshuva’ or repentance for me. My big chance to apologize to all those who I have wronged in the past year as well as to be freed of my commitments to God that I had made with good intentions but failed to deliver on. However, literally trans-lated, ‘teshuva’ means to return. Some interpret this as returning to God. I view it as returning to the things that are most important - health, happi-ness and family (and who wouldn’t sign up for a little prosperity too?). I would encourage you all to spend the upcoming Holy Days taking advan-tage of the annual opportunity our religion provides us – to RETURN to the things that sometimes get set aside in the rush of our society. How many times do you find yourself staring at your cell phone with your children nearby? I know I do. How many times do you ask your child or a friend to wait a minute while you finish something mundane when they have something they are so excited to share with you? I know I do. As I say to myself every year – I’m going to try to make this year different. Hopefully next year, I won’t have to seek ‘teshuva’ for breaking that commitment. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and wonderful new year.

Beth Jacob is fortunate to have regular weekday minyanim, every morning and evening (Friday morning by request.) Many of our members come daily. It can be a great way to infuse a little Judaism and community in an otherwise busy and hectic work day. Some dedicate a particular day or number of days for their minyan attendance. Others come when it feels right. To a large number of members, it is important to come to minyan on the Yahrzeit of a relative or close friend. At Beth Jacob, it is a source of pride that each of us can practice our Judaism in our own way, finding the level and style of engagement that we feel is appropriate. We value our diversity. Though we all can’t always attend, we appreciate knowing that we have a minyan that we can go to when we need or want one. It is understandably distressing for a mourner to come to a service and discover that there aren’t enough people there to constitute a minyan, meaning that they can’t say the kaddish they came to say. It can be dis-couraging for regular attendees to frequently come and see that there is no minyan, and either go home after an abridged service, or wait around while people are called and asked to come. The minyan belongs to all of us, and is both a privilege and a respon-sibility. Please make time in your busy days to come to minyan on days that you don’t “need” to, so as to reciprocate the favours of those who will come to help you on the days that you do “need” to. Whether it be a couple days a week, weekly or monthly, consider finding a frequency that fits your schedule and commiting to it. Kol Yisra’el areivim zeh bazeh – All Israel are responsible for one another. Todah rabbah.

WHY MINYANS MATTERTHE CANTORa word from
On June 2, 2016, my wife gave birth to a beautiful girl. Three weeks later, we held a baby-naming ceremony at the synagogue where we announced her name: Miya (“from God” in He-brew). The outpouring of well wishes, gifts, generosity, kindness, and affec-tion from so many members of the congregation and the community was overwhelming. My wife, Michele, and I remain touched, grateful, and more appreciative than words can express. The response to little Miya’s arrival only serves to underscore just
how warm this community truly is. In my D’var Torah on June 25, at the baby-naming, I spoke about be-ing open to seeing things in a new way. Having a baby in my life changes my perception of the world. The new year, Rosh Hashana, is almost here. If you’re older than my daughter, then you’ve experienced Rosh Hashana before. We’ve been there. We’ve done that. Rosh Hashana, however, is about looking to the future. It’s about newness and hope. It really is about being open to seeing things in a new way - particularly in ourselves. Every time the shofar is blown on Rosh Hashana, we sing “Hayom harat olam” - “on this day, the world was created”. Is it this day oh so many years ago? Or is it this day - this very day? If so, then this year is the start of creation! This day is a birth of sorts. Indeed, Lev Shalem translates this line as: Today the world stands as at birth. The next lines remind us that we are called to judgment by God. This isn’t necessarily something to fear; it is a reminder that we have a chance to begin anew, to give ourselves a clean slate, but we must do so with a moral centre and with the understanding that our actions have consequences. Some say we should dance as though no one were watching. Perhaps. But we should live as though someone IS watching. May this New Year offer you the chance to begin anew, to see things in a new light. May it be filled with hope. Shanah Tovah.

Grades 6 & 7 – B’nai Mitzvah Leadership Experience*Grade 6 and 7 students are approaching a very important milestone – becoming a Bat or Bar Mitzvah. Each student has their own individual and unique celebration of this event, but this course adds a group dimension to the preparations, allowing the kids and their families camaraderie, connection, and learning experiences that they would not have individually. Students will take on projects aimed at enhancing their understanding of their post-B’nai Mitzvah identity and responsibilities. The course will be taught in rotation by Rabbi Hillel, Cantor Eyal, Rina Rodak and special project leaders (Tracey Kornblum and Rabbi Yonah Lavery-Yisraeli); there will also be field trips, guest speakers, and 6 joint learning with Temple Anshe Sholom’s B’nai Mitzvah class.
*Mandatory for those celebrating their Bat or Bar Mitzvah at Beth Jacob
Post B’nai Mitzvah monthly Judaic studies mini-U course led by Milena Romalis (with special guest speakers and field trips) Launches Sept. 18 at 10:30a.m. in the Beth Jacob kitchen with Cantor Eyal Bitton. Topics will include current events and issues in contemporary Judaism that were not studied in Hebrew School, giving students a taste of analytic, discussion–based learning. There will also be community engagement opportunities, field trips, and guest speakers.
Hebrew language enrichment We are offering an optional opportunity to further develop the students’ Hebrew language skills. For those families who are interested, a teacher will be overseeing this Hebrew enrichment class every Monday after the High Holidays.
Morris Black Public Speaking Contest preparation class (For Grades 3-8) This class will be held during the 6 weeks prior to the annual Morris Black Public Speaking Contest to prepare students for participation in the contest. An educator will help the students pick a topic, and guide them through the research and speech-writing process. The students will think creatively about a topic related to Judaism, develop public speaking skills, and practice together with their peers.

The Beth Jacob Israeli Film Festival comes to you in two parts this year! Our opening event will take place on Nov. 27, 2016 with the film Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem.
While we celebrate each and every wedding with the joy of everlasting love and a permanent relationship, real-ity tells us that many contemporary weddings result in divorce. How does traditional Judaism and contempor-ary matrimonial reality converge? In Israel, there are no civil marriages, and no civil divorces. When it comes to divorce, there is only one court — the rabbinical court.
In the film Gett, Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz, co-director and lead actress) goes to a religious court to obtain a religiously legal divorce, as their 20 year marriage has fallen apart. Her husband refuses, insisting on trying to save the marriage. The trial proceeds painfully over many years, slowly unpacking the human suffering and biases of a system of male judges
who seem to respect only the credibility of male voices who rule for and about men. Despite the court’s eventual ruling in favour of divorce, Viviane is repeatedly denied her ‘gett’, and strug-gles to move on with her religious and personal life, attempting to receive the justice meted out by the court.
The movie will be followed by a panel discussion by Beth Jacob’s Rabbi Hillel Lavery-Yisraeli and Rabbi Joel Katzin, who will be arriving from Jeru-salem specifically for this event. Katzin is an Israeli lawyer who specializes in family law and is well acquainted with the nuances of obtaining a ‘gett’ and in dealing with the Israeli religious court. The panel will discuss the relevance, contrasts, and difficulties depicted in the film, and examine some of the nuances between secular and reli-gious views of marriage and divorce. Screening is at 2 p.m. Panel and discus-sion 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or in advance by calling 905-522-1351.
The O-MA-NOOT Gallery at Beth Jacob Synagogue presents the Facing the Sea Art Project, a collaborative project led by Israeli artist and illustrator Einat Peled featuring their drawings and sketches of the beaches of Greater Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv used to be known as the city that turned its back on the sea, but in recent years its beaches have become more and more integral to the character of the city. For more information call 905.522.1351.

Causing someone public embarrassment? Leaving offensive matter on a public road? What about slavery? Not to mention how our legal system interacted with that of the non-Jews surrounding and often governing us? You might be surprised at just how civilized, indeed cutting-edge, the justice system of the rabbis really was. All this and more in selected sections of the Talmud, tractate Bava Kama.
