EPOL was a fabulous success! Over 54 folks enjoyingoysters in call kinds of ways ~ fried, grilled, Rockefeller &of course raw on the half shell. Our “shuckers” were righton halving cases of oysters which were readily consumedby the masses! Many thanks to Ray Gherardini, KimBrown, George Noyes, Ben Preston and a couple of oth-ers who I just can’t recall. All Your efforts were greatlyappreciated!!!

And many thanks to Connie Ridout for shoring up thecooked oysters portion with the help of Pixie Noyes &Carolyn Preston. Several newer members pitched in aswell to help serve. Bob Duff manned the grill for the oys-ters Rockefeller and just cooked oysters. There wereplenty of condiments to partake of for just about any tastefor oysters. It was a smorgasbord of oysters!

Later that evening we all enjoyed a pot luck supper withplenty of food for all to enjoy. We counted about 80 per-sons attending that event. Afterwards most headed intodowntown to enjoy the Edison Parade of Lights. Thanksto everyone who helped dismantle the tables andchairs. The Marina was short staffed so that was theleast we could do to help them out.

Speaking of Legacy Marina, they were wonderful to workwith and so helpful. I hope it was the same for the boatswho enjoyed their dockage hospitality.

At the end of it all, Bob and I settled into a couple ofchairs on the deck and enjoyed the fireworks. We thenwe headed home for a much needed rest.

Thanks to all the participants and the helpers for onceagain making this a successful event for CMCS!

Information on Securing Marine Heads

At the February meeting during the Coast Guard presen-tation Q & A, there seemed to be some discussion (andconfusion) about marine head inspections and the properway to secure the head. Below, is an excerpt from theCode of Federal Regulations which should clarify the is-sue:

§159.7 Requirements for vessel operators.(a) No person may operate any vessel equipped

with installed toilet facilities unless it is equipped with:(1) An operable Type II or III device that has a label

on it under §159.16 or that is certified under §159.12 or§159.12a; or

(2) An operable Type I device that has a label on itunder §159.16 or that is certified under §159.12, if thevessel is 19.7 meters (65 feet) or less in length.

(b) When operating a vessel on a body of waterwhere the discharge of treated or untreated sewage isprohibited by the Environmental Protection Agency under40 CFR 140.3 or 140.4, the operator must secure eachType I or Type II device in a manner which prevents dis-charge of treated or untreated sewage. Acceptable meth-ods of securing the device include—

(1) Closing the seacock and removing the handle;(2) Padlocking the seacock in the closed position;(3) Using a non-releasable wire-tie to hold the sea-

cock in the closed position; or(4) Locking the door to the space enclosing the toi-

lets with a padlock or door handle key lock.(c) When operating a vessel on a body of water

where the discharge of untreated sewage is prohibited bythe Environmental Protection Agency under 40 CFR140.3, the operator must secure each Type III device in amanner which prevents discharge of sewage. Acceptablemethods of securing the device include—

(1) Closing each valve leading to an overboard dis-charge and removing the handle;

(2) Padlocking each valve leading to an overboarddischarge in the closed position; or
