Rear Commodore of Cruising’s ReportSo how come if it is rainingso much my boat looks dirty?

Gary and Jean Blessingonce again proved that theyare the biggest Parrotheadsin the club. It was a greatweekend. We motored upFriday to ‘Tween Waters inthe smoothest, stillest PineIsland Sound I have everseen. It was glass. We sawrain but it never touched us.

Not Friday, Not Saturday and Not Sunday until afterwe got home. It rained heavily in the Gulf; it rainedheavily in town but the Islands were blessed. ClearlyKing Neptune was pleased with the champagne.Full report elsewhere.

Upcoming:

Sept 4-6 Where the Wind Blows/Gypsea’s inParadise – Naples Boat Club- Only the AC’s arelaboring this weekend- The chosen are cool in thepool. This cruise to the heart of 1% country hasmoved to wait list territory. I’ll give a full report nextmonth.

Sept 11-13 Kayusa Cup – South Seas – Georgeand Pixie Noyes are leading another cruise that al-ways fills up. This race/cruise honors the memoryof Betty and Bob Kayusa. Both are missed. Cruisers can get there early andsalute the hot sweaty racers from the pool with acold drink in your hand.

So 2 more chances to plug in over the summer.

After September- well- Summer does set – at leastit has for the last 49 years. By now you should havegotten your notice for Summerset. Race if you mustbut there is lots to entertain the Cruisers too. Re-member it is Pirate Weekend on the Beach so bealert or you may catch scurvy. Aaargh!

Thank you so much CMCS for your support in mysailing career. I just recently got back from mymonth long sailing adventure. On this journey I com-peted in three major regattas, US Youth Champion-ships, US Nationals and North American Champion-ship. I placed 15th at Youth Champs in Providence,Rhode Island. At US Nationals in Brant Beach, NJ Iplaced 12th out of 130 other competitors. And finallyin Manteo, NC at the North American Champion-ships I placed 13th out of 120. During those regattasI was looked at by many US sailing coaches andwas invited to another Olympic Development Clinicin Miami next month. I also visited SUNY MaritimeAcademy in Long Island, NY for possible college.

Thanks again for your support and I look forward tokeeping in touch with you.

Betty Goodacre to receive HumanitarianAward

Betty Goodacre's name is synonymous with giv-ing, as she has given her time and tireless effort tothe betterment of this community for most of heradult life. For nearly 60 years, the Windsor, Ontario nativehas blessed many people with her presence onFort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island. For all her efforts within a lifetime of achieve-ments, Goodacre is being honored on Tuesday(June 23) as the 2015 Humanitarian of the Year atthe Best of the Beach Awards, presented by theBeach Observer/Beach Bulletin of Breeze News-papers at South Beach Grille.

Beach resi-dent BettyGoodacre isseen volun-teering hertime atOstego BayFoundationMarine Sci-ence Cen-ter. She wasselected2015 Humanitarian of the Year and will be hon-ored during a ceremony at South Beach Grillenext week.

Unfortunately, Goodacre's recent health issueshave her recovering at Page Rehabilitation &Healthcare Center in Fort Myers, and she is notexpected to attend the event unless she is able."I am going to make that," she said, lookingstraight into this reporter's eyes with conviction.Goodacre has a laundry list of volunteer work andcommunity service in the Beach community thatwould make anyone's jaw drop in amazement. To start, in no particular order, Goodacre is a re-cently retired Beach Fire Commissioner. Sheserved from 1996 to 2015 (on the urging of Beachresident Betty Simpson) and won each election. On a side note, Betty had to gain her U.S. Citizen-ship prior to running the first time.Goodacre is also vice president of Ostego BayFoundation, a 22-year stint so far. She has beeninvolved since the inception of the nonprofit or-ganization and has given waterfront tours for sev-eral years."I have always been interested in plants, sea lifeand wildlife," she said. "When we started, we onlyhad a couple of tanks for fish.".

The SCI resident also is a member of the SanCarlos Island Lighting District board (after beingnominated by then-Lee County Commissioner RayJudah); vice president of the San Carlos IslandRedevelopment Corporation (formerly the SanCarlos Island Redevelopment Agency); and boardmember of AMIkids Southwest Florida (formerlyknown as the Southwest Florida Marine Institute). To show her caring level, she has attended manygraduations of the nonprofit organizations' trou-bled students."It's a school for kids that are too bad to stay inschool but too good to put in jail," she said. "Someof them go on to college and we still try to helpthem. I was always interested in education."The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Daugh-ter Cathy is a teacher at Beach Elementary and isbeing honored as co-Teacher of the Year at thesame Best of the Beach event.Betty is also an original member of the Fort MyersBeach Tarpon Hunters Club - a membership thatgoes way back to the late 1950s - and was one oforiginal members of Fort Myers Beach CommunityEmergency Response Team."I was in the first class. It's another service where Iwanted to help people," she said.Goodacre has been a faithful member of St. Raph-ael Church, both with the original Episcopal faiththen the offshoot Anglican faith, and served aschoir director for both churches. Singing camenaturally for her. Besides singing in church, theaccomplished singer sang soprano as an originalmember of Southwest Florida Symphony Chorusthat dates back to the 1960s. She also volun-teered her voice at many local events that in-cluded "The Star Spangled Banner" at baseballgames and fire department station dedications to"America the Beautiful" and church hymns at theBlessing of the Fleet, an event she was heavilyinvolved in."One year, we did 600 pounds of shrimp," she re-called. "I sang at everybody's wedding."If that is not enough, Goodacre was a Girl Scoutleader for 17 years."What gets me is that, over the past few years, allmy girls who were girl scouts, have babies of theirown," she said.In addition, Goodacre was the first woman com-modore of Caloosahatchee Marching and Chow-der Society, a distinction she held in 1980 andagain in 1988. She was also a sailing instructorwho started a club on the Beach when her daugh-ters were children.

Betty Goodacre (continued)

CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2015 Page 7

Betty Goodacre (continued)When asked if there was something missing fromher long-scrolled resume, she quipped, "I don'tknow what else I would have time for."Goodacre history:While most people discover the tropical paradisewe all reside in and visit by driving a vehicle fromnorthern territories, Goodacre took a path lesstaken. In 1956, Betty, her husband Norman (who passedin 1990) daughters Cathy and Pam and a cat tooka sailboat from Sarnia, Ontario to Fort MyersBeach. The trip began in Lake Huron and wentthrough the Erie Canal, down the Hudson Riverand the inland waterway to the St. Lucie inlet toLake Okeechobee and down the CaloosahatcheeRiver to Southwest Florida."It took us two months to get here. We left Sarniaon Sept. 17 and arrived in Fort Myers on Nov. 17,"Betty said. The Goodacres moved to the Beach due to ahealth issue that afflicted Pam (severe asthma)."The doctor told us that we had to get her to awarmer place," she said.Doctor recommendations involved either Florida orArizona."You can't take a sailboat to Arizona," joked Betty."We knew we could take a sailboat into here. But,we were the only sailboat in the area. Everybodyelse had shrimp boats and fishing boats."The Goodacres first stayed in beachfront accom-modations -the former Dream Port Motel that wassituated where Crescent Family Park currently sits- when they first came down and eventuallybought a trailer and land on Oak Street on SanCarlos Island. Betty's parents moved down to thearea in 1963 and, with the help from Betty andNorman and the kids, built a house on the sameproperty. Her father, who was a sailor, actuallywrote a fire report called the "Sounds of Sirens"for the Beach Bulletin. He was a welder and alsoan instructor for a local U.S. Power Squadron sta-tion.Betty and Norman first owned a "fish camp" calledPelican Harbor, a business that was housed in theformer Dock O' The Bay Bar & Grill near HurricanePass Bridge. They rented boats and sold provi-sions like beer, snacks, soda, ice cream, ham-burgers and bait. Before the trailer, the Goodacreslived on their sailboat that was docked at the busi-ness.During their trailer days, Hurricane Donna sweptby in 1960 and caused much damage to the area.Cathy recalls how the trailer stayed upright for themost part.

Betty Goodacre (continued)"My father took a telephone pole and sunk it intothe ground next to the trailer and tied the trailer tothe pole," she said. "We were the only one stand-ing on the street when Hurricane Donna came. Itwas smashed up pretty good, but we moved backinto it eventually."In 1965, Betty's parents passed, and the Gooda-cres moved into the house. That is when theystarted an upholstery business at the Oak Streetresidence (zoned commercial). Betty still residesin that home at the end of the street. What really stands out is that many of the afore-mentioned extracurricular activities that Goodacreperformed was in between tending the family busi-ness and working nights (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) at aspecial duty nursing job. (Back in Canada, Gooda-cre went to school to become a registered nurse.)Besides Cathy and Pam, the Goodacres also wel-comed another daughter (Norma) into the worldwhile living on Fort Myers Beach. Oh, and Bettywas president of the Parent Teacher Associationat Cypress Lake High School (vice president whenthe school was built) when the kids were in school."She was always involved in everything we did,"said Cathy. "She has done it all."Betty hopes to recover soon from her illness sothat she can again contribute to all the factionsshe has been involved in. The sedentary lifestyleat the rehabilitation center is not for her."I've been around the world twice, to 55 countriesand on four different safaris," she said. "I've beenbusy."Being carted around in a wheelchair is not for her.Betty was anxious to get to physical therapy."I gotta get walking again," she said.

Head Spook WantedI need a cruise leader for Halloween! Let your inner Elvira loose.

Typically we head to Picnic Island (formerly know as Danger Island beforethe Mau Maus mysteriously disappeared) . But given that the cruise actu-ally happens on Halloween this year maybe something that takes advan-tage of any land based festivities? Either would fun, and if you are theHead Spook you get to decide,

SO if pumpkins, witches and goblins are your thing this is your chance toshine. Just raise your hand and say the magic pass phrase– Trick orTreat! If you do I am sure I can get a bunch of pirates to show up.
