Welcome to the doldrums of Summer Sailing in Southwest Florida. There is plenty of heat, thunder, lightning, rain, and not very much wind. But, if you can pay close atten- tion to the Weather Forecast and especially the Radar, you can still find some really nice time on the water. Patience, diligence and caution will reward you. This is where a large Bimini and Sun Screens can make the difference between mis- ery and luxury. Having an Air Conditioner to use when you plug in to shore power can't hurt either. Most of the local Sailors who do Charters find that you can get a nice Day Sail in by leaving the dock at around 10AM and returning by 3:00PM. Most of the storms are in the late afternoon but, as you know, the Forecast is never guaranteed. When all else fails, keep an eye on the sky over to the East. On a daily basis you can watch the storms develop over the Everglades, sometimes staying over there and sometimes working their way out into the Gulf. Cloud watching will get to be a very interesting daily routine. July 4 th weekend brought many of our members and their boats out for some great Fireworks on the Ca- loosahatchee River and by the time you get this, we will have had our Annual Picnic at the Pavilion at Cape Coral Yacht Club. Sailing activity in August is pretty light but we do have our annual Parrothead Margaritaville Cruise to Tween Waters Resort scheduled for the weekend of August 15. This is one of those times when having Air Conditioning to plug in when you get to the dock will be very welcome. I am sure those Margaritas served under the Tiki Hut will taste very good to go along with music by Jimmy Buffett. This Fall will be extremely interesting beginning in September with the race/cruise to South Seas Plan- tation in Captiva followed by our 50 th Annual Summerset Regatta in October at the Pink Shell and Diamond Head Resorts. Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report

Hot enough and rainyenough for you? Anyone fora cruise to Lake Michigan?

The July 4 innie/outiecruise was just fun. TheInnies included Barefeet,Bridget O’Toole (engine ranfine), Chase the Clouds,Freestyle, and Salty Soul(aka Wings of Gold)(Slagers’ new boat). Theywere joined for the overnight

by ‘locals’ Four Seasons and Lionheart. I know therules say you measure cruise mileages from 101 butreally- if you don’t even have to cast off a dock line ;-). Others that joined for the party but went home toa real bed were Lazy Susan, Windseeker andDream Weaver. The outies included Trust Me!!!,Jazzy, Mental Floss and Miller Time. After the stan-dard afternoonsquall, the skycleared and thetemperaturedropped to pleas-ant. Mental Flosswins the mostdaring award foranchoring upclose and personal. The rest of us had a great viewbut avoided neck strain and hearing loss. Thetroops gathered for breakfast under the tiki at theyacht basin on Sunday. Thanks to Jim Lasorella forthe hospitality at the yacht basin and Gary and JeanBlessing for organizing the outies. I am glad it wasJean’s fried chicken and their boat…..

Upcoming:August 14-16 Margaritaville – Tween Waters –Gary and Jean Blessing once again prove they arethe biggest Parrotheads in the club. Contact themto see if you can still get in.

Sept 4-7 Where the Wind Blows/Gypsea’s inParadise – Naples Boat Club- Only the AC’s arelaboring this weekend- The chosen are cool in thepool. This cruise to the heart of 1% country hasmoved to list territory. But things change so get onthe wait list if you like to live dangerously. Lionheartis signed up and has promised to bring their ‘FCMmachine’.

Sept 11-13 Kayusa Cup – South Seas – Georgeand Pixie Noyes are leading another cruise that al-ways fills up. This race cruise honors the memoryof Betty and Bob Kayusa. Both are missed.

Rear Commodore-CruisingKim Brown

So 3 more chances to plug in over the summer andthen we start anchoring out again in the fall. Butplease follow the instructions and plan ahead on theabove cruises. We love to accommodate but all themarinas are great and space is limited. So if it saysget on the list with the cruise leader (Tween Watersand Naples Boat Club) that is what you do. Andplease supply complete information particularlynights staying and credit card so the cruise leadersdo not have to chase you. If it says work directlywith the Marina (South Seas) then call them directly, identify that you are coming in as part of CMCS andmake your reservations. Keep the cruise leaders inthe loop too or no rum punch for you.

In all cases, if your plans change let everyone know.It may just keep you from getting tagged for dock-age as a no show and it will also give someone onthe wait list a shot.

After September- well- Summer does set – at leastit has for the last 49 years.....

Rear Commodore of Racing’s Report

Our next race is the KayusaCup on Saturday, Septem-ber 12 from Fort MyersBeach to Captiva with thepost race festivities at SouthSeas Resort in conjunctionwith the South Seas Cruise.Incidentally this is being heldthe same weekend as theGalloway triathlon again. Iencourage all interestedparties to make it a quad-

rathlon, sail/swim/bike/run. For those that do notcare for the crowds, the Kayusa will be on a differ-ent weekend from the triathlon in 2016.

Many new as well as experienced racers find thestart procedure to be not only confusing but some-what anxiety producing. All of us could use extrapractice at our starts. If there is sufficient interest(say four or five boats at least), I will put on a prac-tice session. We will plan on doing it by marker sixrather than SC light in order to shorten travel times. The plan is to have several starts and just sail out acouple hundred yards or so. Please notify me di-rectly if interested in participating. [email protected]

Remember that all WFPHRF certificates expire onJune 30 of each year. Renew now so that you areprepared for the start of the fall sailing season!

Steve Colgate to be inducted into theNational Sailing Hall of Fame

Offshore Sa i l ingSchool founder andCMCS member SteveColgate is among sixpeople who will beinducted this year intothe National SailingHall of Fame.

Colgate’s Fort Myers-based company has taughtmore than 130,000 adults and families to sail or sailbetter since its inception in 1964.

"Teaching people to sail is very rewarding. Theyturn on to sailing and on to its lifestyle in a veryshort time," Colgate said in a June interview for TheNews-Press.

He started Offshore Sailing School with one locationin New York City, and with wife and business part-ner Doris Colgate, gradually expanded to eight loca-tions in Florida, the British Virgin Islands, New Jer-sey and New York.

Along with naval architect Jim Taylor, Colgate de-signed the school’s training vessel, the Colgate 26,which also is the official training vessel of the U.S.Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard and Maine Mari-time Academy.

Colgate was a competitive sailor before and aftergoing into business, and has competed in twoAmerica America’s Cup Trials, the Pan AmericanGames, the Olympics, 20 Newport to Bermudaraces, two Sydney-Hobart races, five Antigua raceweeks and many other events.

The Colgates are known for their involvement in theSouthwest Florida community, and earlier thismonth held a third-annual free weeklong sailingcamp for a group of 10 students at Cypress LakeMiddle School.

The new Hall of Fame inductees will be recognizedOct. 4 at an invitation-only ceremony at the Bay-head Yacht Club in Bay Head, New Jersey.

Joining Colgate as 2015 inductees are Olympicmedalist Paul Foerster of Rockwall, Olympic medal-ist and author JJ Fetter , boat building innovatorsand brothers Meade and Jan Gougeon and U.S.Olympic Yachting Committee Director Samuel V.Merrick.

“This is an incredible honor,” Colgate said.

Head Spook Wanted

I need a cruise leader for Halloween! Let your inner Elvira loose.

Typically we head to Picnic Island (formerly know as Danger Island beforethe Mau Maus mysteriously disappeared) . But given that the cruise actu-ally happens on Halloween this year maybe something that takes advan-tage of any land based festivities? Either would fun, and if you are theHead Spook you get to decide,

SO if pumpkins, witches and goblins are your thing this is your chance toshine. Just raise your hand and say the magic pass phrase– Trick orTreat! If you do I am sure I can get a bunch of pirates to show up.

CMCS Rum and Reading Cruisea/k/a Macomber Cruise

November 13-15, 2015

This is CMCS’s most educational cruise! And it is so simple that there are nopre-requisites. It begins on Friday. Trust Me!!! will anchor at York Island for theevening. As always, if the wind is wrong for York Island it will be right for Sani-bel Bight. Communal Cocktails will in fact occur at 5P on Friday night. Judyintends to sweet talk the largest boat in the anchorage to host. If that fails wewill see how many folks we can squeeze on Trust Me!!!. (30 something is thecurrent record). There are no class size limits in this CMCS school. BYOB anda tidbit to pass. There will be an educational seminar on the intricacies of sip-ping Rum. Learn by doing. Trust Me!!! will supply the first couple of choices butfeel free to contribute if you have a special favorite. ‘Old Nassau’ remains onthe banned list; Xaniche– last years winner will be present. The request to use16 oz glasses has been tabled.

Saturday morning we'll weigh anchor if we ended up at Sanibel Bight and headto York Island to anchor (a proper display of flags and colors is encouraged). The expeditionary force from the fleet will dinghy up the Monroe Canal toWoody's Waterside Pub (a very dog and sailor friendly establishment) for theBob Macomber Annual Book Celebration. http://www.robertmacomber.com/Scuttlebutt.html The ’class’ starts at noon though it runs well into the evening. If you aren’t in the first wave of dinghies to head in don’t worry. Folks unable tojoin the naval assault are encouraged to join the land forces that will arrive bycar and bike. The usual drill is there is a hog roast, beer, and a band or two.And we act very literary Bob wanders about being very authorly and hawks asmany books, hats, and t-shirts as he can. There is a new book this year. Atthis point that Wake dude must be as old as Bob. After you are booked out, head back to your boat to recover.

Nothing formal is planned for Saturday night or Sunday so head home early orhang around and hit the Waterfront for lunch and make it a complete tour of St.James city. Trust Me!!! will monitor 16/72 and my cell is 822-6934
