21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Father Larry Adams

Last week, our pastoral and finance councils held a joint meeting to discuss some of the issues currently facing our parish. (Elsewhere in

this bulletin, you’ll find the report of our year-to-date finances, which was presented to our councils at this meeting.) In addition to that discussion, we talked about another of the challenges that is facing our parish: past-due debt, and how we might honor the liabilities which we took on in the past.

In 2017 and 2018, prior to the formation of the grouping which became Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish, some of our predecessor parishes were unable to meet the costs of employee payroll. At that time, they did not take out a loan to cover payroll; instead, the diocese advanced our parishes the money and paid the payroll costs directly, with the expectation that the parishes would soon thereafter reimburse the diocese for these direct payroll drafts. Unfortunately, our parishes did not pay back the cash advances they received. As a result, CDS owed the diocese $455,000. Earlier this year, they indicated that it was necessary for us to make good on our promise to reimburse the diocese for these cash advances. In June, we paid back $300,000 of the debt, and in September, we will fulfill our obligation and pay the remaining $155,000.

If you’ve peeked ahead to the finance page of the bulletin, you know that we’re still spending more than we receive in donations. So, we do not have the wherewithal to pay this debt from the parish checking account. In the council meeting last week, we discussed one particular approach: over the past few years, you have donated to the Campaign for the Church Alive! effort. For every donation you made, a portion was earmarked for our parishes. If you recall, each parish came up

with its “wish list” of how they would like to spend those funds. Unfortunately, none of our parishes met its fundraising goals, so only a portion of the anticipated funds are available. Our parishes cited a number of ways to utilize the funds: debt reduction, the hiring of additional staff members, and maintaining our parking lots / sidewalks / buildings. Our predecessor parishes spent almost $350,000 of the funds that were raised, and about $680,000 remains.

Since we had already planned to spend a portion of these funds on “debt reduction” and “staff salaries”, a proposal was made at the council meeting: utilize a portion of our remaining Campaign for the Church Alive! funds to reduce the debt incurred by unpaid staff salaries from 2017 and 2018. After a vigorous discussion of the question, the proposal passed in a vote of our councils. We also decided to open up a process for our councils to discuss how we wish to utilize the remaining funds in the account (about $225,000). We will take up these additional discussions in council meetings in the upcoming months. We invite you to share your suggestions on how to utilize these funds by emailing us at [email protected], and we’ll share your ideas with our councils! At this point, our next steps include notifying our parish community of the plan (in the bulletin and from the pulpit), and formally requesting the change to our “case statements” to our regional vicar, Fr Joseph Sioli, who will pass the request on to the diocesan vicar general for approval.

Please continue to support our parish through your prayers and generosity! Christ the Divine Shepherd, have mercy on us! St Bartholomew, St Bernadette, St Gerard Majella, St John de Brebeuf and companions (the North American martyrs), St Michael, and St Susanna, pray for us!

Blessings, Fr Larry

Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish Financial Results – January through June, 2020

As 2019 drew to a close and we prepared to become one parish for Monroeville and Penn Hills, we knew that we faced many challenges. One of these was to get our spending under control, because in 2019, our parishes spent about $500,000 more than we received in donations. In the first six months of 2020, we’ve seen both signs that encourage hopefulness as well as indications that are causes for concern.

Once the effects of our staff realignment will fully begin to take effect, in September, we will have cut our expenses by 33% this year. This is an amazing achievement, and it’s our staff’s diligent work that is the cause of this great outcome! We’re hoping to continue this trend, by maintaining our focus on managing our spending wisely. Our expenses also went down while the lockdown was in effect, but they’re back to prior levels now that we’re celebrating publicly-attended Masses again.

The revenue side of the story, on the other hand, is somewhat discouraging. Donations have been decreasing all year. (Collections for Easter were down from previous years, but were sufficient to help shore up our income just a little). We had hoped that, once we were able to re-establish a schedule of publicly-attended Masses, donations would stabilize. They haven’t. Looking at the statistics for 2020, we’ve found that donations are down 43% since January.

The practical upshot is that, although we’re doing a good job at reducing expenses, we’re falling further behind each month. If we obtain loan forgiveness for the PPP loan that we received this spring, that will help to a certain extent, but to be perfectly honest, our donations continue to be insufficient to meet our expenses, and that gap between what we spend and what we receive is growing larger and larger.

At our most recent meeting of finance and pastoral councils, when we discussed these figures, we noted that, if donations continue to decline, we might face a critical moment in the life of our parish. Council members asked that we remind you that your donations are vital to the continued existence of our parish. Our goal is to continue to provide Catholic ministry to the people of Monroeville and Penn Hills. We will continue to try to find ways to stabilize our situation, but without sufficient support from our parish community, it becomes increasingly difficult to do so. We’re confident that, with your continued support, we’ll be able to overcome these challenges!

Please keep praying for the Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish community!

SAINT MONICA (332-387) August 27

She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Augustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope.

Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of

our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves

responsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading

and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established.

Homily

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful Offertory Now We Remain

(Refrain) We hold the death of the Lord deep in our hearts. Living, now we remain with Jesus, the Christ.
