Today’s Readings

From Father Al Zapf

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy for I the Lord your God, am holy.’ These words from the Old Testament Book of Leviticus act as a prelude to the

other readings for this weekend, the 7th Sunday in Ordinary time. Our second reading today from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians tells us ‘DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT YOU ARE THE TEMPLE OF GOD, AND THAT THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU? IF ANYONE DESTROYS GOD’S TEMPLE, GOD WILL DESTROY THAT PERSON; FOR THE TEMPLE OF GOD WHICH YOU ARE, IS HOLY’. And our Gospel from St. Matthew tells us to ‘BE PERFECT JUST AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT’. Last weekend Bishop Zubik came to St. Bernadette Church of CHRIST THE DIVINE SHEPHERD Parish, to celebrate a wonderful mass, part of which was to officially install me as MODERATOR OF OUR TEAM MINISTRY, while he recognized collectively the others of the team, Fr. Thom, Fr. Larry, and Fr. Rick. As you know we strive to be holy, each in his own way, each with his own talents. The bishop, although suffering with his back problems and walking with a

walker, still managed to share with us an upbeat homily and celebration of hope and love and faith. We too as clergy and also as staff and Finance Council and Pastoral Council and all people of God have a challenge to be HOLY as we grow together as one Parish.

What a better time to do it than this coming week, as we will celebrate a most solemn day, ASH WEDNESDAY. The ashes are a sign that now is the time to begin the holy solemn season of Lent, a time to take a look at who we are, and how we live. The ashes say to ourselves and those around us that we realize that we live in a world that is imperfect, and that we are imperfect human beings, in need of changing ourselves, and we will not be around forever. ‘Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return’ or ‘Turn away from Sin and believe in the Good News’ could be said by the person who applies the ashes to our foreheads inviting us to enter into this holy season and become more holy, more perfect as followers of Christ. These words call us to a few different things: reconciliation, renewal, preparation, urgency, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, purification and enlightenment. God bless each and every one of you this Lent. Fr. Al Zapf+
