23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Father Larry Adams

A number of items have crossed my desk over the past few weeks. I thought I’d mention a few of them to you today…

The presidential election season is upon us! Having watched some of the coverage of the conventions over the past couple of weeks, I thought it might be a good opportunity to discuss the Church and its role in responsible citizenship.

As a non-profit entity, the Catholic Church does not endorse either candidates or political parties. Therefore, employees and volunteers for Christ the Divine Shepherd are requested to not endorse or campaign for candidates while they engage in activities on behalf of the parish. (Of course, on their own personal time, we hope that they prayerfully discern whom they will support, and will vote in the election!). In addition, we do not support the distribution of campaign materials or other political leaflets on our premises, especially during Mass and other services.

The Church does offer some guidelines on how we approach the question of ‘faithful citizenship’. An updated document which discusses this issue is available on the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. You can browse directly to it at the USCCB website: https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship, or if you wish, you can find a link to this document at the top of our parish website (www.cdsmph.org).

Over the past few weeks, the councils and leadership team of the parish have been struggling with a difficult issue: how we might begin to re-open our facilities for events beyond publicly-attended Masses. It’s a difficult question for a number of reasons: varied “maximum attendee” standards, our limited resources for post-event sanitization, and the discernment of how to allocate scarce resources equitably. A number of groups have used our facilities in the past: TMIY, Scouts, AA, NA, Knights of Columbus, Youth Ministry, and many others. Please be assured that we’re trying to find ways to re-open our facilities as best we can, and with all required safety considerations in place! We’ll keep you up-to-date on our efforts in upcoming bulletins!

Throughout the summer, Marlene and Irene (our religious education team) have been working hard to come up with a plan for the resumption of Religious Education for our parish. We’re almost ready to announce this year’s approach! Since there are a number of new dynamics to this year’s CCD program, we’re expecting that we’ll be starting a bit later this year – we’re hoping for the program to begin some time in October or November. We’ll be reaching out to CCD families soon, via email. Please keep an eye out for an email from our DRE, Marlene Kopper!

Please continue to support our parish through your prayers and generosity! Christ the Divine Shepherd, have mercy on us! St Bartholomew, St Bernadette, St Gerard Majella, St John de Brebeuf and companions (the North American martyrs), St Michael, and St Susanna, pray for us!

Blessings,

Fr. Larry

Do you know someone who might want to join the Catholic Church? Consider joining us for RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It’s open to anyone who is curious about our Church and wants to be initiated into the Faith. We are looking at ways to develop new approaches that will allow us to continue even during the current restrictions. The RCIA Program will begin in the fall. Contact Deacon Mike at the Parish Office (412-373-0050 x 112) or by email ([email protected]) to register or for more details. Let us show you that the Catholic Church can be welcoming!!

RCIA Begins in the Fall

Help is needed with our Faith Formation/CCD program. In order to ensure the safety of our CCD students, we are working with online religion sources that would be both Catholic faith filled and easy to use for Catechists, parents and children. We are looking at providing an on-line experience with content provided by a couple of sources of Catholic catechetical resources. To do this we need help from you to share your faith, time, and talent with our parish children. If you or someone you know can help in guiding families through the catechetical year, have experience using a computer and an internet connection at home, please contact Marlene Kopper at [email protected] or Irene Swackhammer at [email protected]

September Praise Letter from the Ladies of Charity

It’s time for another season to come to an end. Let’s give thanks to God for seeing us safely through these trying times. Rejoice in the changes around us that heralds in a new season.

We remember many saints this month including Sts. Rosalia, Regina, Daniel, John Chrysostom, Ligorious, Cyprian, Robert Bellermine, Janarius, Matthew, Padre Pio, and Vincent de Paul. Ask for their intercession for your prayers.

Keep in your prayers Pope Francis, Bishop Zubik, and all the priests of our grouping. May the Holy Spirit be with them and bestow upon them the gifts necessary for good and honest stewardship of the church. As Fr. Faustine begins his new assignment back home, keep him in your prayers. He will be missed.

Pray for all the victims of the abuse by ones that they trust and those that are victims of human trafficking. May they find help and heal with God’s help and may they find peace. Keep in your prayers all our military personnel. Give thanks for all the freedoms we have as Americans, those fought for and preserved by our brave men and women in the military. May they come home safely to their loved ones. Keep in your prayers those who are not so free, those who are persecuted because of their faith.

Pray for all those who work at keeping us safe, police, firefighters and EMS. May God hold them safely in His loving hands.

As we celebrate Labor Day this month, pray for all workers, all who made lasting contributions to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. During this pandemic, many people have lost their jobs. Please keep them in your prayers that they may find viable employment to provide for their families. Please pray for all of those that are heavily burdened or facing challenges in their lives. May they place their burdens in God’s hands and trust that He will see them through. May God strengthen them so that they may bear their crosses.

Remember to pray for all those who are suffering physically, spiritually and mentally, particularly those near and dear to us as well as those who have no one to pray for them, for all those who have contracted the COVID-19 virus and those in nursing homes unable to see their families. May God’s healing touch be upon them and may they be strengthened by their faith and comforted by His presence.

As the new school year starts during this pandemic, may all students, teachers, administrators and coaches be safe from the virus by following CDC safety guidelines. May the teachers and administrators teach the students entrusted to their care, how to grow, how to face struggles and how to improve their worth. Pray for all students, that they will use the gifts God has blessed them with to their fullest, that they will treat all with kindness, and they will step up for what is right.

Pray for our environment. Especially for those areas hit by hurricanes and the forest fires on the west coast. May these fires be stopped in an effort to save many species of plants and animals that God placed there. He gave us this earth to protect it and nurture it and to pass it on to future generations. He gave us the ability to feed ourselves. We pray that the greed of men will not destroy the earth God has given us. May we all do what we can to protect it.

Pray to St. Francis of Assissi to protect all of God’s creatures, great and small. We pray for all the stray and homeless animals as the cold weather comes upon us. May they find warmth and food from a kind heart.

In an effort to keep our students safe and our technology up to date, we have been purchasing several items. Some of these items include: touchless thermometers, ultraviolet scanners (to kill germs- these kill 99.9% of viruses), touchless hand sanitizers, technology equipment, and several other items for upgrading our school's wireless connection.

We know that this has been an extremely difficult time for everyone and it has been devastating for some families financially. We appreciate your sacrifice and dedication to Catholic Education and Divine Mercy Academy. We are thankful for you! In an effort to do everything we can to keep our students and staff safe, we are still looking into purchasing plastic shields for all of our students' desks. So we are asking for donations to help us fund this project. The final quoted price that we have received is approximately $4500. If you, or someone you know is able to donate to the purchasing of this protective equipment we would be so grateful. There is no gift too small. Please send any donations to the school office. All funds will be used directly for funding this purchase. Any funds raised above this amount will go to purchasing additional chromebooks, sanitization products, and other items needed to keep our children safe. Thank you so much and keep us in your prayers! DMA Faculty and Staff

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Order of Mass

Introit

You, are righteous, O Lord, and right is your judgements; deal with this servant of yours according to your mercy.

Processional Song As We Gather At Your Table

Greeting

Priest: The Lord be with you

All: And with your spirit

Penitential Rite

Lord Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy, Lord Have Mercy

Glory to God

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Responsorial Psalm

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading

1.) As we gather at your Table, As we listen to your Word, Help us know, O God, your presence: Let our hearts and minds be stirred. Nourish us with sacred story till we claim it as your own; Teach us through this holy banquet how to make Love’s victory known. 2.) Turn our worship into witness in the sacrament of life; Send us forth to love and serve you, brining peace where there is strife. Give us, Christ, your great compassion to forgive as you forgave; May we still behold your image in the world you died to save.

3.) Gracious Spirit, help us summon other guests to share that feast. Where triumphant Love will welcome those who had been last and least. There no more will envy blind us nor will pride our peace destroy, As we join with sings and angels to repeat the sounding joy.

Homily

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful Offertory Ubi caritas

(Refrain)

Ubi caritas et amore, ubi caritas Deus ibi est
