IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS
What it means to be a disciple is at the heart of this text. Discipleship means sometimes undergoing discomfort and
keeping oneself firmly focused on the real prize in life—the kingdom of God and eternal life with him.
Readings for next week: 7 July Isaiah 66:10-14 Galatians 6:14-18 Luke 10:1-12, 17-20
The Augustinian Justice and Peace Symposium is being held at St. Augustine’s College from 5-7 of July and open to all parishioners. The theme of the symposium focuses on the plight of refugees in our world today and features a widely-respected international speaker, Fr van Thanh Nguyen.
Augustinian Formation Association aka AFA
AFA is a group of lay people dedicated to helping support
our seminarians. Our next function will be the
Multi-Cultural Dinner to be held on July 20 at 7pm in the Parish Centre.
The 14 Seminarians will be involved in providing the food
and entertainment. Everyone is welcome and it is a great opportunity to get to know these fine young men.
Tickets cost $25 per head for a sumptuous 3 course meal. Bookings and payments due by Fri 12/7 through
the parish office. Make up your own table of 8 (2 of 10) or we can organise a table for you.
For more information please contact Rosemary McEwan 9949 1825 or Marion Milne 9939 7913.
SACRED SPACES AND IMAGES
Recently installed in the Priory Chapel at Manly Vale is a restored stained-glass window of Christ as ’Pantocrator’ or ’Christ in Majesty’ which is a worthy addition to the Chapel furnishings (left). The work on the original baptismal font at St. Kieran’s Church has now also been completed and it has been restored for regular use at our parish christenings. It’s relocation into the sanctuary of the church is in keeping with current practice and its vicinity to our resurrection window is also significant and appropriate. We thank Craig Jeffrey of the technical and applied studies department at St. Augustine’s College for his work in restoring the brass cross on the font cover (right).

REFURBISHMENT OF OUR WORSHIP SPACES
The process of refurbishing the worship space in the parish, the churches of St. Cecilia and St.
Kieran, has occupied a good deal of energy over recent years going back to the work of the
Renewal Committee following the twinning of the two parish communities in 2005. The work was
brought forward again in the last couple of years with the completion of interior renovations at St.
Cecilia’s and a reassessment of the scale and nature of the work at St. Kieran’s in the light of limitations imposed by
engineering and costs. The revised plans were presented to the parish at the time of an extraordinary Parish Assembly last
February 10th.
Plans have now been formally approved by the Diocese for the revised work at Manly Vale which will focus on the
following elements:
The widening of a side door at the main entrance to allow disability access and accommodate the entrance of a
funeral casket by means of a ramped pathway involving some structural work and landscaping outside.
The relocation of the original baptistery furnishings from the narthex to the sanctuary. (The font had been in
disuse for a good number of years). This will also provide a more open entrance to the church.
The construction of a new Reconciliation Room to replace the existing confessionals in keeping with current
practice with regard to the Sacrament of Penance.
The relocation of the music and audio-visual area from the right to the left of the church to ‘unclutter’ the area
adjacent to the busiest side entrance of the church and provide more space for the musicians and their equipment.
The positions of the ambo and presider’s chair will be reversed in the sanctuary to accommodate the new
baptistery area and the credence table for sacred vessels rebuilt. (completed).
The Marian shrine is to be moved to the area vacated by the musicians on the right side of the church.
The Blessed Sacrament Altar is to be translated to the right side ‘chapel’ vacated by the Marian Shrine, and to a
place more visible and accessible for devotion for most of the faithful entering the church from the right hand side.
Updating of audio-visual equipment for the church to simplify and maximise the benefits of current equipment.
Attention to climate control by means of insulation and cross ventilation.
The need to attend to the now porous original roof tiles is also a priority for which we had previously budgeted.
Needless to say, the process for carrying that work through to fruition will occupy us for some time yet, as we and
progressively manage the work with as little disruption as possible to our weekly worship and other parish and school
activities. A fuller report will be offered again around the time of the Parish Assembly on July 21. Fr Brian.
From Fr. Brian
Lord, teach me what I should teach, teach me what I should hold fast.
Letter 166, 10
The Parish is in need of new volunteers to help with the counting of the weekend collection on
Sunday night or Monday morning. Counters volunteer for one calendar month each year and the
counting takes approximately an hour each week. If you can spare an hour a week for one month a
year please contact the parish office.
Next financial year’s Planned Giving envelopes are available for collection at both churches. If your envelopes are not
in the church please call the parish office and tell us which church you would like to collect your envelopes from. We
thank all those who make a financial contribution to our parish. If you would like to join the Planned Giving program
please contact the parish office.
If you would like to receive your end of year receipt electronically and you don’t currently receive In Touch via email,
we don’t have your email address. If this is the case please contact the office with your email address. If we don’t have
your email address a paper copy of your receipt will be available from the Church foyer in mid-July as per previous
years. Chris Burrows
Thanks to our team of volunteers for last Saturday morning folding and inserting the latest issues of In Touch magazine
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
‘Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem.’ Luke 9: 51
At school: When I have to do something hard, I…….? At work or study: Making a stand for justice
can be……? In my family life: How do we work through
the really difficult times and decisions?
Words for this week.Repeat frequently with love.
‘Jesus, we will follow you alone.’

Heaven: Summing Up
In heaven your peace will come from possessing God. Here what is wine cannot be bread
and what is light cannot be drink. But in heaven God shall be all of these things for you.
You shall eat of him so that you will never again be hungry. You will drink of him so that
you will never again be thirsty. He will illumine you so that you will never again be in the
dark. You will be supported by him so that you will never again fall. All of him will possess all of you but you
will not be cramped for space. You will possess all of him and he will possess all of you. You and God will be
one.
