PARISH STATE SCHOOL CATECHETICS
PROGRAM
CAN YOU HELP OUR CHILDREN?
In recent times two factors have impacted upon our catechetical program that brings the message of Jesus to children in
our area who do not attend our parish schools.
Our own schools are full and the number of young children has increased beyond anticipation.
Secondly, a number of our own catechists who have served for many years are no longer able to continue in the role. If you could spare an hour a week to assist to go to a classroom on a weekday to assist it would be of great benefit and help us. Please contact Ricki Hayes through the parish office.
Our First Anointing Mass for 2014 will be this Wednesday Feb 5th
10.00am at St Kieran’s Church
followed by morning tea in the parish centre.
Please notify us should anyone require assistance.
While Mary and Joseph are unfailingly presented as pious, practising Jews by Luke, this text takes the promise of salvation far
beyond the Jewish nation. Jesus is destined to be the bringer of salvation to all the nations and a light to the pagans, as well as the
glory of Israel.
A Candlemas Prayer O God, true light, who create light eternal,
spreading it far and wide,
pour, we pray, into the hearts of the
faithful the brilliance of perpetual light,
so that all who are brightened in your holy
temple by the splendour of these candles
may happily reach the light of your glory.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.
From St. Augustine: Lord, I am poor and needy. I am better only when with hearfelt
sorrow I renounce myself and seek Your mercy so that my deficiencies are overcome and transformed.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ‘For my eyes have seen your salvation.’ Luke 2:30
At school: Can I find time to read a story from the bible?
At work or study: When I look around at the world, what leads me to faith in
God’s love?
In my family life What is a good screensaver to remind us to look to Jesus? Discipleship this week!
Download a copy of the Nunc Dimittis and say it as a night prayer. (Canticle of Simeon)

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
(Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life) Australia Day this year fell on a Sunday allowing us to highlight it in our Sunday worship. So too does the Feast of
the Presentation of the Lord this week which again allows us to focus on another aspect of the day, namely, the Consecrated Life, or Religious Life in the Church. The Day for Consecrated Life was inaugurated in the time of Pope John Paul II as a way of acknowledging the vocation to the religious life lived out in vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, otherwise known as the ‘evangelical counsels’ (Gospel admonitions). Communities of men and women live in diverse circumstances around the world serving the People of God in a variety of ways from primary evangelisation, to education, to medical and welfare services, retreats and spiritual direction. The days when our Australian catholic schools and hospitals were run by religious men and women are now gone but the legacy of their dedication, from our pioneering days and challenging times in the 20th century remains the inspiration of those who serve in those roles today. The weaknesses and failures of those institutions are today also acknowledged but that should not deny the benefits they afforded to many in the country. Unbeknown to many, such religious men and women continue to be ‘yeast’ in the church and society of our time, albeit with a different profile and in fewer numbers. On this day we pray in particular for our own Augustinian religious men and women, both here and abroad, especially those in our own formation community at Brookvale.
From Fr. Brian
Welcome to another year. I hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful break.
As we get back into full swing the planning of the renovations for St Kieran’s church has progressed quickly since we received council approval prior to Christmas. We are hoping we will be able to begin the renewal of our worshipping space in 3 or 4 months time. There may be some disruption to the midweek running of the
church but we are endeavouring to have it available for weekend Masses while the work is being done. You may have noticed a couple of the altar spotlights high up in the church are not working. As these lights require specialist equipment to replace them we have been holding off hoping to do the work in conjunction with the renovations. As we get closer to the renovations we will, of course, keep you up to date with what is happening around St Kieran’s.
