The an nual un der grad u atestu dent awards event washeld in April. It is al waysgood to honor and rec og nizethe best and bright est chem is -try and chem i cal en gi neer ingstu dents in the Phil a del phiare gion. It is also at theseevents that mentoring re la -tion ships are ce mented be -tween stu dents and fac ulty.

It was a long time ago when I think back to my grad u a tionyear, and I do not re mem berbe ing rec og nized as the bestor bright est at the time ei ther, but I do re mem ber manyteach ers and pro fes sors whohad (and who con tinue tohave) a pos i tive in flu ence onme as I have pro gressedthrough my ca reer as a chem -ist. I have re flected on theirin flu ence over the years and I would like to name a num berof them. So, if you will in -dulge me, I would like to usethis fo rum to rec og nize thosein di vid u als who kept mestudy ing chem is try andhelped me main tain a fas ci -na tion with this sub ject thatbinds us all.

My ear li est mem ory of hav -ing an on go ing chem is try dis -

cus sion with a teacher was inhigh school with Mr. RonWeatherhead. He was achem is try teacher at myschool, but he was not mychem is try teacher. He wasmy “form mas ter” (readhomeroom teacher here). The class was be gin ning the topicof or ganic chem is try for the‘A level’ ex ams, and he heard a group of us talk ing aboutmem o riz ing or ganic re ac tions – the next day he pre sentedeach of us with a copy ofSykes’ 2nd edi tion of AGuide book to Mech a nism inOr ganic Chem is try. Eventhough he was not my chem -is try teacher, he went the ex -tra mile and started adis cus sion on re ac tion mech -a nisms that cer tainly mademore sense than the way thecur ric u lum dic tated or ganicchem is try be taught. Mov ingon to Read ing Uni ver sity, Icame un der the guid ance ofPro fes sor An drew Gilbert. Itwas with him that I was ex -posed to un der grad u ate re -search with a photochemistry pro ject. The pro ject in volvedtrap ping a triene in ter me di ate that had been pro posed in the ‘photolytic re ar range ment ofisothiochroman-4-one.’ Atthe Hat field Polythechnic(now the Uni ver sity of Hert -ford shire) I com pleted mymas ter’s de gree with Dr.Barry Lee and Dr. Rich ardEllam. With these in di vid u -als, my in ter est in creased inmech a nis tic or ganic chem is -

try. I had fun syn the siz ingheterocyclic mol e cules andfol low ing their rate for ma tion us ing ki netic tech niques. Af -ter a brief hi a tus from study -ing, I came to Phil a del phia, and it was at Tem ple that Ihad the plea sure of work ingwith Pro fes sor Da vid Dal tonand Dr. Mike Haugh. I amnot sure how much of a plea -sure Mike found me, be cause he left Tem ple af ter a yearand moved to Cal i for nia for a job with Kai ser Alu mi num.Dave Dal ton suf fered through my pres ence at Tem ple andwe have re mained firmly intouch since my grad u a tion, much to his dis may.

In all se ri ous ness I am in -debted to each of the afore -men tioned in di vid u als. Onecom mon trait dis played by all of these peo ple was a senseof hu mor and a high de greeof patience.

Recently, I at tended the sec -tion’s Un der grad u ate Stu dent Awards event and I was veryim pressed, as al ways, by theachieve ments and ca reergoals that these “soon to be”grad u ates an nounce that theyhave when they re ceive theirawards. The eve ning cer e -mony was capped by a livelypanel dis cus sion. The pan el -ists were Kristen Lammers(chair of lo cal YCC and grad -u ate stu dent at Tem ple Uni -ver sity), Doug Hausner(pres ently a fac ulty mem berat Rutgers Cam den), John

Northrop (Anton Paar USA)and Shawn Phillips (soon tobe grad u ate of Drexel Uni -ver sity School of Med i cine). As you can see, the pan el istswere from a wide range ofchem is try in ter ests and theirex per tise was put to the testby many ques tions from theawardees. Hope fully the ses -sion al layed any fears andtrep i da tion that the awardeesmight have about the new ad -ven tures that lie be fore them,post-grad u a tion. Even af terthe for mal ques tion and an -swer ses sion ended, many ofthe awardees came up to askad di tional ques tions of thepan el ists. A num ber of thepar ents ac com pa ny ing theirsons and daugh ters in di catedthat they, too, learned newthings from the ses sion, so by that measure the session wasa success.

In May, we have the teach ing awards cer e mony, an othercele bra tory oc ca sion.

Literature-Based Consulting (No Lab Required) Dr. Kathryn Bullock

Abstract: Literature-based consulting requires a strong knowledge of your field and its literature, but very little capital investment. Good reading, writing, typing, creative problem solving skills and access to an on-line computer are the foundation required to build a consulting business. Clients have diverse needs, and include attorneys, business leaders and entrepreneurs, editorial staffs of scientific publications, government contractors, inventors, marketing professionals and scientists/engineers with limited experience in the consultant’s field. This talk will cover potential clients, examples of literature consulting, and methods for getting access to information. Biography: Dr. Kathryn Bullock is an electrochemist with a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Northwestern University. She worked in industry developing batteries and other electrochemical power sources and applying them in electrical systems for 30+ years. In 2003, she formed her consulting company, Coolohm, Inc., and has since worked on a wide variety of projects. She also teaches a graduate course on electrochemical power sources at Villanova University and an IEEE short course on fuel cells. She represents the Electrochemical Society on the Heritage Council of the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia and last year served on the National Academy of Sciences Committee to review the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership. Location: The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. From I-76, drive south on City Line Ave. (US Rte. 1). Turn right on Conshohocken State Rd. (Rte. 23); stay in right lane. WHY CHEM IS TRY MAT TERS TO NO BEL LAU RE ATES

In cel e bra tion of the In ter na tional Year of Chem is try 2011, No bel Me dia, the com pany man ag ing the No bel Prize me dia port fo lio, has pro duced a se ries of four, short ed u ca tional vid eos(http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/chemistry_matters.html) cap tur ing 16 No bel Lau -re ates’ opin ions on why chem is try mat ters. They dis cuss the fron tiers of the field, what the lifeof a chem ist en tails, the beauty in her ent in the ‘queen of the sci ences’ and the thrill ing and some -times lonely mo ments that ac com pany dis cov er ies. De signed for all stu dents con sid er ing a ca -reer in chem is try, the vid eos are avail able on Nobelprize.org (http://nobelprize.org/), the of fi cialweb site of the No bel Prize.

In the video “Chem is try Mat ters: Be yond the Text book,” No bel Lau re ates de scribe chem is try asa mul ti fac eted field that ranges be yond what you learn in school to en com pass all that liesaround us. As this sub ject touches our daily lives and trans forms our ma te rial world, the Lau re -ates pro vide ex am ples of the prac ti cal ap pli ca tions of chem is try.(http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=1465)

In their re flec tions on the life of a chem ist in an other of the vid eos, No bel Lau re ates de scribe thecol lab o ra tive spirit that ex ists among their re search col leagues and stu dents and crosses in ter na -tional bound aries. As ex pressed by No bel Lau re ate Pe ter Agre, liv ing a sci en tist’s life of ad ven -ture is a lot like be ing Huck Finn. (http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=1466)

In the video about those rare eu reka mo ments in sci ence, No bel Lau re ates pro vide their for mulafor suc cess: a bit of luck, com bined with a ready ac cep tance of frus tra tion and fail ures, and anun yield ing per sis tence. (http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=1468)

From mol e cules to equa tions, and from ideas to ex per i ments, the beauty of chem is try strikes No -bel Lau re ates in many ways, as the video en ti tled sim ply “Beauty” re veals. (http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=1467)

BOOK RE VIEW—Alan War renThe Ul ti mate Scam by Wil liam R. Turner. 118 pages, 6 by 9 inches, card cov ers, self-pub lished,2009. ISBN 13: 9781439230718, Avail able from Am a zon.com, $14.99 plus ship ping.

This book is not a chem is try text but was writ ten by a Phil a del phia Sec tion ACS mem ber whoserved on the Sec tion’s in vest ment board. His book came out just af ter the eco nomic melt down of 2008. He men tions scams that oc cur ev ery day such as iden tity theft, fake prize con tests, elec tionfraud, claim pad ding, and mort gage fraud among oth ers. How ever, the main the sis of his book isthe ul ti mate scam caused by gov ern ment of fi cials that re sults in the costs of bor row ing money byover spend ing, and the in vis i ble cost re flected in de val ued cur rency.

Turner re views the his tory of cur rency val u a tion in the United States over the past 200 years—go -ing off the gold stan dard, in fla tion, the mount ing costs of war and so cial en ti tle ment pro grams, cre ation of the Fed eral Re serve, and many other fac tors. The re sult is the con stant and grad ual de -val u a tion of earn ings, sav ings, CDs, re tire ment ben e fit ac counts, in vest ments, mu tual funds, andin sur ance pol i cies.(con tin ued on page 109)

While So cial Se cu rity was es tab lished to ben e fit cit i zens, pol i ti cians (i.e., scammers) raided thosefunds for other pur poses, so that the sys tem ap pears to be run ning out of money. The de cade of1970-1980 saw dou ble-digit in fla tion and the dol lar lost half its value. In tro duc tion of the cost ofliv ing ad just ment (COLA) con trib uted to the in fla tion.

Us ing a num ber of ex am ples, the au thor shows the loss of money over time no mat ter how money is saved: plac ing it un der the mat tress, sav ings ac counts and CDs, cor po rate and mu nic i pal bonds, US Trea sury bonds, in sur ance pol i cies, real es tate, an tiques and col lect ibles, and so cial se cu rity. The ef fects of taxes and in fla tion re duce their value, not in crease it.

The scammers are our elected of fi cials and cer tain of fi cials in the Fed eral Re serve Sys tem. Thescam is fed by their de ci sion to spend, bor row, and tax. The bank ing in dus try con trib utes to thescam through its pol i cies on lend ing de pos i tors’ funds. A sep a rate chap ter re views the his tory ofthe Fed eral Re serve and how its ac tions con trib ute to the ul ti mate scam.

The US Gov ern ment Ac count ing Of fice (GAO) is sup posed to be the fis cal watch dog. De spitetheir warn ings the gov ern ment con tin ues its over spend ing pro grams. Our elec tion pro cess fu elsthe ul ti mate scam as po lit i cal can di dates seek re elec tion by pro vid ing fi nan cial ben e fits to vot ers. These have to be paid for by bor row ing funds and rais ing taxes.

Cit i zens en cour age the scamming pro cess since they are used to it. They want gifts and ben e fits, loans are eas ier to pay back with in flated dol lars, they don’t like to pay taxes, and they haveadopted the pol icy of “buy now, pay later.”

The au thor rec og nizes that so lu tions to the prob lems are dif fi cult. They would re quire changes tothe op er a tion of the Fed eral Re serve, to break Con gress’s habit of bor row ing and over spend ing,and form ing grass roots or ga ni za tions to de mand that Con gress work to a bal anced bud get. Onlythen will the strength of the dol lar be re stored.

Fo cus on Sec tion Mem bers – James Falcone, Wil liam Golton, Da vid Cichowicz,Vic tor Tortorelli and Cheryl Mar tin – by the Chair

So far the spot light on “power con tri bu tors” to the Section’s op er a tion has been on in di vid u als. This time it is a on a group. So what is it that this group has done you might ask? Each per son inthe group, con sist ing of James Falcone, Wil liam Golton, Da vid Chicowicz, Vic tor Tortorelli andCheryl Mar tin, have con trib uted, in one de gree or an other, to sta bi liz ing the fi nan cial pic ture forthe Section. You may or may not know that re cent changes in gov ern ment leg is la tion re quiredthat the Na tional ACS could no lon ger hold and in vest mon ies on be half of the lo cal sec tions. The Na tional ACS had been play ing this role for quite a few years. The afore men tioned group of in di -vid u als, led by Jim Falcone, has taken charge of the Section’s in vest ments and is over see ing andman ag ing the in vest ments pru dently. As part of the on go ing In ter na tional Year of Chem is try cel e bra tion, the Sec tion par tic i pated in the first Frank lin In sti tute’s Sci ence Car ni val, on Sat ur day, April 16th. The day was over cast andthreat en ing rain from 8:00 AM on. There was a po ten tial, the day be fore, that the event would becan celed or moved in side. Nei ther of those con sid er ations came to fru ition. Luck ily, the rain heldoff un til around 2:00 PM. The Section’s booth fea tured “lather paint ing.” We had hun dreds ofpeo ple of all ages stop by and paint with shav ing cream and food col or ing. Yes, it was messy butev ery one had fun and each par tic i pant was able to leave with their art work. Many teach ersstopped by the booth, and the vol un teers hap pily ex plained the sci ence be hind the pro cess. Whenthe rains fi nally came, the booth con tin ued to op er ate. The Frank lin In sti tute de cided to close theevent early be cause of the weather. How ever, we con tin ued to op er ate even in the rain and worddid not get to us that the event had been closed for quite some time af ter the of fi cial an nounce -ment. We had fun even in the rain.

Many thanks to those in di vid u als who vol un teered on the day; with out them the event would nothave been the suc cess that it was. The vol un teers were Kristin Lammers, Am ber Riendeau, DougHausner, Bill Smith and his stu dents from Bris tol High School. The suc cess of the event is clearfrom the pho tos that follow.
