March is ap proach ing as I amwrit ing this piece and the op -er a tive word for the Phil a del -phia Sec tion is “busy.”

I would like to be gin by re -port ing on the Jan u ary meet -ing that was held at the IronHill Brew ery in West Ches ter. A very lively pre sen ta tion andtour was given by our host, and speaker, Larry Horwitz.Larry is the brewmaster at theWest Ches ter lo ca tion. Theevent at tracted a re spect ableau di ence (as in num bers) witha size able con tin gent of at ten -dees who were non-US born;the coun tries rep re sented were China, Ger many, Eng land andIre land. In ter est ingly, onemem ber from Bucks Countyre ar ranged a doc tor’s ap point -ment in the West Ches ter areajust so that he could at tend the meet ing.

Feb ru ary 1st saw the worldkick off of the In ter na tionalYear of Chem is try cel e bra -tion. The site for the fes tiv i -ties in the US was at theChem i cal Her i tage Foun da tion (CHF), in Phil a del phia. CHFkindly hosted a din ner on Jan -u ary 31, at which Tom Tritton

(CHF Pres i dent) wel comedthe as sem bled chem is try com -mu nity and in tro duced An -drew Liveris, Pres i dent, CEOand Chair man of the Board ofthe Dow Chem i cal Com pany. An drew’s ma jor point is thatwe should all be sing ing thepraises of chem is try be causewe have the world stage. Hefur ther added that we shoulden sure that we do not “blowit” by not tak ing ad van tage ofthis op por tu nity. On Feb ru ary1st CHF hosted a panel dis cus -sion en ti tled “Global Chal -lenges/Chem is try So lu tions,”mod er ated by Dan iel G.Nocera, the Henry DreyfusPro fes sor of En ergy andPro fes sor of Chem is try atthe Mas sa chu setts In sti tuteof Tech nol ogy. Starting a Custom Synthesis Company

    Ron Bihovsky

Abstract: An entrepreneur interested in starting a custom synthesis company must overcome all of the challenges faced by a consultant as well as additional issues inherent to manufacturing. These include finding a location, securing funding, purchasing equipment, finding a niche of products, marketing, pricing and identifying clients. These challenges are balanced by the satisfaction of knowing that one has succeeded in manufacturing valuable products. Ron Bihovsky will discuss how he addressed these issues when he founded Key Synthesis LLC ten years ago, as well as the difficulties, successes, and the insights gained. Biography: Dr. Ron Bihovsky founded Key Synthesis LLC, a custom synthesis company specializing in synthesis of biologically active compounds, in 2001. He also consults, and has performed experimental work and testified as an expert witness in pharmaceutical patent cases. He previously conducted medicinal chemistry research in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry at Cephalon and Berlex Laboratories. Prior to that, he performed research on natural product synthesis as a professor of organic chemistry at SUNY Stony Brook. He currently serves as chairman of the Chemical Consultants Network. Location: The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. From I-76, drive S on City Line Ave. (US Rte. 1). Turn right on Conshohocken State Rd. (Rte. 23); stay in right lane.
