Feb ru ary sees the start of theevents for the In ter na tionalYear of Chem is try (IYC). I re -cently learned from an ar ti clein RSC News1 by Pro fes sorDa vid St. Clair Black that theidea for the In ter na tional Yearof Chem is try orig i nated fromthe Ko rean Chem i cal So ci ety. They made the pro posal in2006 and the idea was well re -ceived, and it was adopted byIUPAC Bu reau. Be cause the ti -tle had the word ‘In ter na tional’in it, ap proval was re quiredfrom the United Na tions. Inthis arena, Ethi o pia led thecharge through the United Na -tions Ed u ca tional, Sci en tificand Cul tural Or ga ni za tion(UNESCO). Hav ing gainedap proval there, the pro posalmoved on to a UN sub-com -mit tee re lated to sus tain ablede vel op ment. The idea gainedfi nal UN ap proval in De cem -ber 2008.

At an IYC kick off event lo -cally, the Sec tion will haverep re sen ta tion at a Sci enceCafé to be held on Feb ru ary1st, at the Chem i cal Her i tageFoun da tion. In ad di tion to this, the Sec tion has been work ing

in close co op er a tion with JoeTalento of the Frank lin In sti -tute. We have also part neredwith the Frank lin In sti tutewhich is spon sor ing the Phil a -del phia Sci ence Fair (April15-28). The Sec tion will behost ing hands on dem on stra -tions around the IYC themeof “Wa ter” at the Sci ence Car -ni val - part of the Sci ence Fair – to be held on April 16th.

At our Feb ru ary meet ing, un -der grad u ate and grad u ate stu -dents will pres ent theirre search at the An nual PosterSes sion, to be held at Tem pleUni ver sity’s Mit ten Hall, onFeb ru ary 10th.

Chang ing the sub ject slightly, and mov ing to a more per -sonal note, I would like toshare the fact that I had theplea sure of meet ing Da vid St.Clair Black dur ing a visit toAus tra lia, in De cem ber 1989.The meet ing was ar ranged, with out my knowl edge, bymy cousin and his wife for atour of the chem is try de part -ment at the Uni ver sity of New South Wales. Af ter the tour,Pro fes sor Black in vited Ann,my wife, and I to his housefor din ner. We had a won der -ful day and eve ning. We methis fam ily and found out thathis son, An drew (who was inhigh school at the time),rowed for Syd ney Row ingClub. I gave An drew somePhil a del phia row ing shirts. Afew years later An drew wentto Har vard Uni ver sity and did

his PhD with Pro fes sorWhitesides. An drew also in -formed me about the rib binghe used to get from the row ers on the Charles River ev erytime he wore those Phil a del -phia row ing shirts. In an up -com ing piece I would like toex plore how the re la tion shipsthat are typ i cally forged be -tween the fac ulty men tors and the stu dents pre sent ing theirre search at the up com ingposter ses sion, and the type of meet ing that I had with Pro -fes sor Black, set the stage formak ing the chem is try com mu -nity the won der ful one that itis. These per sonal in ter ac tions are very im por tant ones andthey should not be for got ten.

Poster Ses sion JudgesNeeded

Plan ning is once again un der -way for the an nual poster ses -sion. This year the event hasbeen sched uled for Feb ru ary10th.

We need peo ple to vol un teeras judges or sug gest in di vid u -als we can con tact about judg -ing. The more judges, thefaster and smoother the whole event can run.

Fo cus on a Sec tion Mem ber – Dr. Kathleen ThrushShaginaw

Fre quently, in di vid ual sec tionmem bers, or board mem bersof the Phil a del phia Sec tion, take charge and com mit theirtime to the pro fes sion that insome way goes above and be -yond the call of duty. Thesein di vid u als are usu ally lauded for their de vo tion to duty with a short snip pet in the Sec -tion’s min utes – which maybe a fea ture that many read ers of the Cat a lyst gloss over.

I would like to take this op -por tu nity to high light, andthank, Kathy Shaginaw forher ef forts to pro mote sci enceand chem is try to young la -dies, spe cif i cally through theP.A.G.E.S.ä (Phil a del phiaArea Girls En joy ing Sci ence)pro gram.

I would also like to point outthat Kathy has taken on var i -ous lead er ship roles in chem -is try in the Phil a del phiare gion. Be sides be ing on theBoard of the Phil a del phiaACS Sec tion, she is also ac -

tive in the Amer i can As so ci a -tion of Uni ver sity Women ofthe Com mon wealth of Penn -syl va nia (AAUW). WithAAUW she pres ently has twooff board po si tions as ‘FundsChair’ and ‘Leader on LoanChair.’ Kathy has also beenac tive for a very long timewith the Del a ware Val ley Sci -ence Coun cil. In 2007, Dr.Shaginaw was or ga nizer forthe ses sion en ti tled “Men tor-ing and Net work ing Work -shop: Women Chem ists Com -mit tee,” at the 2007 MARM(Mid dle At lan tic Re gionalMeet ing - ACS). In 2008 shere ceived the “Eliz a bethBingham Award” at theAmer i can Women in Sci encemeet ing in Phil a del phia.

From my per spec tive, the re -ally no ta ble role that Kathyplays is her to tal in volve mentin the P.A.G.E.S.ä pro gram. This yearly event ex poses 6th

grade young la dies to sci encein a ‘hands-on’ en vi ron ment.

The pro gram typ i cally hasover 120 par tic i pants (andthere would be more if spaceal lowed) from ap prox i mately40 schools around the Phil a -del phia area. Kathy gar ners alarge band of will ing vol un -teers in or der to pull off theevent each year. In ad di tion to this she also has a group ofin dus trial and ac a demic spon -sors. The day spent at thisevent def i nitely im pacts theseyoung in di vid u als in a pos i -tive and pro found way. Theyoung la dies get to meet andlis ten to em i nent fe male sci -en tists, in di vid u als that theycan use as role mod els for any ca reer path that they maychoose. With out doubt,P.A.G.E.S.ä is the type ofpro gram that pro motes a goalof the Amer i can Chem i calSo ci ety to show youngwomen that a ca reer in sci -ence is vi a ble and in ter est ing.A truly great pro gram - ku dosto Kathy.—John Tierney,Chair

Consultant Opportunities in Patent Law

Peter Mlynek

Abstract: Companies of all sizes in technical fields such as chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceutics and biotechnology are typically well versed in intellectual property including trade secrets, patents, and trademarks. Consultants need to be aware of intellectual property issues that may be encountered during the execution of an engagement with such client companies, not only the sake of the client vis-à-vis the client’s competitors, but also to be aware of any pitfalls related to the inventorship and ownership of rights to new products invented during the engagement. A consultant’s familiarity with patent law is also very helpful when seeking opportunities with law firms as experts in the area of opinion preparation or legal discovery, or as an expert witness during a litigation. This presentation will also analyze new trends in patent law, provide information on what attorneys look for in an expert witness, and if obtaining patents can help your consulting practice. . Biography: Dr. Peter D. Mlynek is an attorney with the Philadelphia office of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellot where he has spent most of his time addressing the patent needs of chemical, pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The focus of his practice has been on evaluating inventions and potential products from business and legal views, preparing and prosecuting patent applications, preparing invalidity opinions, freedom to operate opinions, infringement opinions, and pharmaceutical litigation. Before entering the patent field 10 years ago, Peter worked as a development scientist in the polyurethane industry. He has a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from University of Wisconsin-Madison, MBA in Finance, Investment and Banking from UW-Madison, and JD from Rutgers. Location: The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. From I-76, drive S on City Line Ave. (US Rte. 1). Turn right on Conshohocken State Rd. (Rte. 23); stay in right lane.
