St. Michael’s Feast Day is on 29th September and each year Mass is celebrated at

the Church as close as possible to that date. This year, the Mass will be held on Saturday

the 11 October at 10am at St. Michael’s Church, Bungonia. St. Michael is the Arch-

angel, patron saint of police. So come along. Refreshments will be served at the Hall after-wards. All welcome.

29 September is also the National Police Remembrance Day and this date holds a

very special significance for Police throughout Australia. It is a day for police to pause to honour officers whose lives have

been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer. This important day is also a time to remember police

officers who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances.

A Service will be held at St Michael’s, NSW Police Academy Chapel, Goulburn, from 11am on Monday,

29 September, to Remember them.

Another great night is expected to be had down at the Hall with the new kitchen being mostly finished so that it will be nice

and cosy for this years last WINE AND CHEESE night to be held on Saturday the 18 October from 7pm.

Come and meet your neighbours and friends at this social event and bring a plate to share and whatever you are drinking.

Andreana Cachia, 74 old from Marulan. Killed in an MVA upon the Hume Hwy, Marulan, outside of her property on Mon-day 15 September 2014. She is now buried in Marulan Ceme-tery, next to her husband Fred.

Bungonia Hall Hire The Progress Assoc. Policy is to make the

Hall facilities available to locals at afforda-

ble prices. There is no caretaker, and

maintenance is the responsibility of mem-

bers. Cleaning is less of a problem since the

ceiling has been installed but most hirers sweep the Hall and remove rubbish and

clean the kitchen after use. If, however, we

have to employ a cleaner, then the fees will

be increased.

Kitchen: The internal ceiling will have been installed when you read this and hopefully the painting finished. Then all the equipment

can be moved back and the lighting and plumbing completed. It has required a marathon effort by many of the Members and the new

Supper Room is a credit to them.

Market Day: Saturday, 4th. October. The kitchen won’t be finished but the arrangements will be the same as

for the Easter Markets. We will be contacting stall holders during the coming weeks, regular stall holders places

are reserved. We are getting more and a greater variety of stalls each year. There is plenty of space outside so

please contact either Pauline Dickson 4844 4202 or Moira McGinity 4844 4266 if you would like a stall.

Charges are $12 a site in the Hall and $10 outside plus $2.00 if you require a table.

As usual there will be lots of great bargains and the BBQ and Devonshire tea.

come, The grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is?”

Come out of hibernation and join your fellow residents at the Wine & Cheese night. Bring something to drink,

you can leave your purse at home but bring the kids instead.

Gardening in October The colourful daffodils and other bulbs flowering now are

truly the harbingers of spring.

The days are slowly warming and the snakes are on the

move so be careful and be vigilant working in the garden.

Prune flowering shrubs and trees after flowering, cut back

any dead or unwanted branches. Feed daffodils after flowering to

promote bulb growth next year. Prune banksia roses now.

Plant dwarf dahlias for sparkling colour; petunias, cosmos, geranium, impatiens and many others. Dead head tulips and hya-

cinths to stop them wasting energy setting seeds, nip them off with

your fingers do not cut back the stems or leaves until they die natu-

rally.

Enjoy the warmer weather

The 2015 Kangaroo March Re-Enactment will follow the route of

the 1915 Kangaroo Recruiting March from Wagga Wagga to

Campbelltown, a century on, in September and October 2015. The

re-enactment mission focuses on commemorating the historic event

of the March, inspiring the current generations to achieve success in life as a reflection of the value derived from the WW1 sacrifices

and educating children on the history of the long and continuing

fight for freedom.

Communities along the March route are being invited to organise a

series of complimentary activities during the period that the March

is in their town (the March contingency will arrive in Goulburn on

Friday 25th September, and depart on Monday 28th September

2015).

Council is inviting interested persons/groups to attend a public

meeting with the aim of forming a Working Party to identify

and organise additional complementary activities during this

period, with Council support.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday 2nd October at

6pm in the Council Chambers, all welcome.

Police have again received several reports of tele-phone scams from residents in Bowral & surrounds.

This time the caller claims to be from Telstra and re-quests for banking details or credit card details to pay for fixing computer problems, fixing a virus, or other

reason given. HANG UP ON THEM. - - -

A Marulan man, travelling north upon Jerrara Rd, about 5kms south of the Hwy, attempted to avoid a kangaroo which jumped in front of his utility earlier in September. The roo made good his escape but the vehicle didn’t like the solid gum tree it ran into and the vehicle was written off. The driver was not injured.

Auburn St, and donate plasma which takes about 1.5 hours for the process to complete & can produce 17 different life saving products from that one donation. I used to attend and donate whole blood but you can only do that every 12 weeks which saves 3 lives. CENSUS RETURNS. - Many of the enu-

merators have furnished to the local press

particulars of the results of the census in their respective localities. It has not been

thought necessary to do this in the case of

this district; but we are informed that an

approximate estimate of the population of

the city of Goulburn is 6870; and of the re-

mainder of the district in round numbers

10,000.

This would give a total for the police district

of Goulburn of say 16,870.

In 1871 the population of the city was 4462,

and the total for the district was 13,720;

and in 1861 the total was 9824.

The principal increase during the last ten

years has been in the city, being over

2400, or about 50 per cent.

The rate of increase in Bathurst is stated at

25 per cent; the population of that city

being now 7388, and at the previous census

about 6000.

The Bazaar and Bruce - Auction held on Saturday in aid of the

building funds of Christ Church, Bungonia, and St. Saviour's Cathe-

dral were, not withstanding the particularly busy nature of the day ( after the three successive half-holidays ), and the large amount of

money which must have been expended over the agricultural show,

to say nothing of Mr. Ketten's recital, a thorough success.

The attendance in the evening was remarkably good, and the articles

exhibited for sale, some of which were both out of the common and

very pretty, were rapidly disposed of.

The ladies who presided at the stalls were - Mesdames Zouch, Gray,

Alexander, Ross, and Shepherd, and they were actively assisted by

the young people and other friends.

Mr. W. C. Harris of Baw Baw took a most active part in arranging

the bruce.auction, at which we noticed for sale Captain Rossi's

twenty-five heifers, a prize pig from Mr. Douglas, another from Mr. A. F. Gibson, 'Mr. Emanuel's prize bale of bay, Mr. Shepherd's dit-

to, prize oats from the Messrs. Broadhead, and a quantity of farm

and garden produce from the above named gentlemen and Messers.

Horsbrugh, W. C. Harris, L. Faithfull, J. Chisholm, J. Morgan, W.

T. Harris, &c., &c.

The cattle realised a fair price; the hay was bought at a high figure;

but the purchasers of the pigs were very fortunate in securing them

at much below their real value. The poultry from Bungonia and the

sheep from Mr. T. Lewis were sold privately.

The net proceeds as stated in the advertisement in this issue were

£120 17/3. Mr. Sands gave his services gratuitously.

GOULBURN POLICE COURT. Tuesday, April 12. Before

Messrs. Alexander and Cropper.

Absconding Apprentice. - Richard Sexton, a smar t look-

ing lad between fourteen and fifteen years of age, was charged with absconding from the service of Patrick Gooley

to whom he had been apprenticed from the Randwick asylum.

It appeared that he ran away from his master's place, about

three miles from Goulburn, on the 6th March, and on Monday he was apprehended by Senior-constable Gall at Stair Hill,

eight miles from Goulburn, where he was in the employment

of Robert Paton. When apprehended he began to cry, and said he ran away because he did not like shepherding, it was too

lazy, and he wanted to get somewhere where he could have

some work to do. Mr. Paton stated to the constable that he was willing to keep him and that he was a good boy. The

boy's master Patrick Gooley informed the bench that he did

not wish to have the boy back, as he could get no good of him

at shepherding. He had been with him about three years. He had not the indentures with him. The bench were in doubt as

to the course to pursue, as sufficient power is not given to

deal with cases of this kind. They remanded the boy till Thursday, in order that they might write to the authorities of

the Randwick asylum in reference to the case. Mr. Cropper

left the bench.

Profane Language. - Patrick McGrath, convicted of using

profane language in a public place, was fined 4/- or twenty

four hours in jail. Fine paid.

Protection. - John Kelly, an old constable who had been

formerly injured by bushrangers and had become paralysed, and who was in care of the police on his way to the Liverpool

asylum, was ordered to be discharged with a view to being

forwarded to his destination.

FROZEN MEAT EXPORT. - A telegram to the S. M. Her-

ald states that the Orange Slaughtering Company have just completed the purchase of Bloomfield and Tate's fine tract of

well-watered grazing country contiguous to their other prop-

erty. The refrigerating machine is working magnificently, having registered 26° below zero. The company already have

on their books 20,000 sheep and 800 cattle for slaughter and

freezing on squatters' accounts. Mr. Roxburgh, a gentleman

Sudden Death.- On Sunday last James Conlon, a resident of Bungonia, died suddenly, it is supposed from heart disease. It

appears that he went out with sheep in the morning, and on

coming home died almost immediately. Deceased was over seventy years of age, and was well known throughout the dis-

trict, where be had lived many years. Mr. Betts, coroner, went

out yesterday evening for the purpose of holding an inquest.

Before Mr. Voss and Captain Rossi.

Assault and Wounding. - William Yandall alias Nugget

was charged with assaulting a Chinaman named Ah Sue.

Mr. Langdon for the prosecution. Constable Cochrane deposed: About six o'clock yester -

day afternoon I arrested prisoner on a charge of assaulting a China-

man named Ah Sue ; prisoner said he knew nothing about it ; he

asked me where the assault happened, and I told him it was near

Mr. Conolly's mill at twelve o'clock the previous night ; he said

he was not there ; as soon as the prosecutor saw defendant he said

he was the man who had assaulted him ; prisoner said he was mis-

taken.

Ah Sue deposed: I live at Bungonia, and am a digger ; the

night before last I was crossing the bridge near Conolly's mill about

twelve o'clock ; two boys came up and asked me to shake hands

with them, and I was pulled down on the ground ; there were three of them altogether ; one of them hit me on the back, another hit me

about the head, and the third kicked me in the face, which was the

prisoner Yandall ; the mark on my face was made by him, and I am

quite sure that it was he that inflicted that wound on my face, and

immediately they did this he with the others ran away ; he is the

same man who asked me to shake hands with him in the first in-

stance ; the moon was not bright, but there was a gas-lamp close by

and I could see him by it ; I never saw any of the men before ; the

first time I saw them was about two yards from the bridge on my

way home to the cook-shop ; when I was thrown down and

kicked I sang out and one of my countrymen came up ; I requested him to watch the prisoners while I went to fetch a policeman ; I

came back again but could not see one ; during my absence my

countryman told me that the men had been back again.

To the bench : I was on my way home when I met the three

men ; when the men saw me coming they immediately made a

stop ; I am quite sure that the prisoner Yandall is the man who

kicked and assaulted me.

Cross-examined by prisoner : It was about twelve o'clock

when I saw you ; I know that it was about that time, as I saw the

watch at the cook.shop, and I swear most positively that I saw you at that time.

Ah Taw deposed: I keep a cook-shop opposite Mr.

Conolly's flour-mill ; I r ecollect Ah Sue coming to my place on

Wednesday night at twelve o'clock ; I saw his face cut and bleeding

at the time, but I had heard him call out previous to my seeing him ;

I was in the cook-shop at the time, and I immediately went out to

see what was the matter ; there was a gas-lamp, and I could see the

men by it ; Ah Sue asked me to watch the men while he went to

look for a policeman ; during the time he was away the three men

came back again to my shop ; they asked me to sell them some fruit

and vegetables ; I asked them to go away ; they went outside,

and one of them threw a stone in the store, and it hit me on the lip, causing the marks I have here.

To the bench : I am quite sure that the prisoner Yandall is the

man.

For the defence the prisoner called, John Flynn, who said

that he was a bootmaker, residing in Grafton-street, and that he

was at the Belmore assembly rooms on Wednesday evening until

11.30 p.m. ; he afterwards went home ; he had been in but a few

moments when two men, one the prisoner, and the other of the

name of John Healey, knocked at the door, and asked him to take a

walk up the street ; he did so, and went as far as Stephenson's Hotel

in Grafton-street ; he stopped there a few minutes, just until they were about closing the house, and returned home ; he left the pris-

oner Yandall and Healey there ; Healey is a bootmaker at Wood and

Constable Cochrane being recalled, said : When I arrest-

ed the prisoner he said that he was in quite a different part of the

town to where the occurrence took place.

To the prisoner : You did not say that you were at Stephen-

son's.

Constable Hammond deposed that he recollected Ah Sue

coming to him about half past twelve in Auburn-street ; his face

was bleeding at the time and he made a statement to witness.

The bench after a brief consultation found the prisoner

guilty, and Mr. Voss said that it was time that these disgraceful

occurrences should be put a stop to. He only wished that it was in

his power to order a flogging, as he did not see why these men

should be molested in the way they were, and a great many cases

that these Chinamen brought were broken down by the voluminous

evidence brought to bear for the defence. The prisoner was sen-

tenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor. Threatening Language.- G. J. Vosper was ar rested by

warrant charged with using threatening language towards his wife.

Messrs. Langdon and Carter appeared for the complainant.

Defendant pleaded guilty and was ordered to find two sureties of

£40 each, himself in £800 to keep the peace for six months, or in

default to go to gaol for three months.

Assault.- James Sevior was charged with assaulting a

Chinaman named Jimmy Wong Sing.

Mr. Carter for complainant ; Mr. Langdon for defend-

ant. Jimmy Wong Sing deposed: I live at Binda ; on Wednes-

day last I was in Goulburn, and was in the street near the cook-shop

close to the hospital ; I saw defendant there ; he took off my hat and

offered it to a boy, who would not take it ; I went after the defend-

ant to get my hat which defendant would not give me ; he after-

wards gave me the hat, and at the same time hit me in the chest and

afterwards in the eye ; there was another man with defendant ; I

never gave defendant any provocation.

To Mr. Langdon : The blow in the chest was not a very hard

one ; I ran into the cook-shop and got a stick ; this was after de-

fendant struck me in the chest ; defendant ran away when I got the

stick. To Mr. Carter : Defendant came to me this morning and

asked me how much I would take to settle the case.

Several other witnesses were examined.

Convicted and sentenced to be imprisoned for one month.

THE AUSTRALIAN MUTUAL PROVIDENT SOCIETY'S

NEW BUILDING. The building which for the past few months has been in course of erection in Montague street, ( cnr of Auburn St ) Goul-

burn, for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, is now complete, and the office of the society was opened this afternoon for the transaction of business. The public are invited to inspect the building, and many per-sons have already availed themselves of the invitation. At three o'clock,

when the offices were formally opened, a number of gentlemen were pre-sent, and several toasts were given in honor of the occasion. The business in the new premises was inaugurated by the issue of five new policies. The first agency in Goulburn of this society was opened about twenty years ago by the late Mr. Isaac Fox. After his death it was closed for about twelve months. It was then determined to form what is know as the southern district, extending from Picton to Wagga, and from Monaro to

Glenfield, and Goulburn was made the head-quarters of the distr ict. On the 15th May 1879 Mr. D. J. McLeod assumed the agency, and offices where taken in Montague-street. At that time there were 225 members in connexion with this agency ; but the business has increased so much that the number is now 1150. In consequence of this increase, the board, in

accordance with the recommendation of Mr. McLeod, concluded to have premises of their own erected. A piece of land in every respect suitable for the purpose was purchased in Montague street ' plans were prepared, and tenders called for. The tender of Mr. W. Duncan of Goulburn was accepted,

and on the 1st October last the building was commenced. The rapid pro-gress of the work, and whole having " Just been completed within a period of seven months, is highly creditable to the contractor, and is a striking instance of the extent of the local resources now at command in the build-ing trades. The promptitude with which the work has been done, as well as the excellence of the materials and the workmanship, have given great satisfaction. The building is of two stories, and has a frontage of 40 feet by a depth of 44 feet. It is constructed of brick on a concrete foundation, the

front being covered with Portland cement. The front elevation is divided into bays by piers up to the first-floor cornice, and encircled pilasters sup-porting a heavy cornice in the upper story. The height to apex of the pedi-ment is 34feet. The general treatment of the building is classical. The ventilation is a modification of Tobin's system, with foul-air flues in the chimney stacks. The building throughout is lighted with gas. The entrance in the centre bay gives access to three offices, each about 15 x 14, on the right-

hand side, which are to be occupied by Messrs. Betts and Carter; and by a handsome staircase to five offices on the upper floor, the sizes of which range from 27 x 15 to 14 x 14. Messrs. E. C. Manfred and G. G. Donaldson have offices in this portion of the building. The side entrance gives access to the society's offices, which com-prise principal office with handsome counter, doctor's examination room, and agent's office, all of which have been superbly fitted up. Comfortable quarters for the caretaker, lavatories, and other con-

veniences, are provided for at the back of the building. The whole of the plans and drawings have been prepared by Mr. E. C. Manfred, architect, under whose immediate supervision the work has been carried out. It may be noted that the fittings are handsome as well as conven-ient. The woodwork is in cedar of beautiful grain and polish ; and the mas-sive and handsome counter in the society's front office is much admired. The furniture is well selected and convenient, and much of it was supplied by local firms. One may notice as particularly suited for offices a

writing-desk which by a simple movement covers all the documents, writ-ing materials, &cs. from view, and is transformed into an ornamental piece of furniture, besides by the same means preventing dust or the loss or dis-turbance of documents. Also a chair which accommodates itself to every movement of the writer in a most convenient way. The total cost of the building, inclusive of the land, has not exceed-ed £2200, which is considered y competent judges to be unusually cheap. Fore this moderate outlay we have a building which is really an ornament

to the city and a credit to the society. In reference to the Australian Mutual Provident Society itself, it may not be out of place to mention, in concluding this notice, that, as point-ed out by Professor Smith at the late annual meeting in Sydney, the society is doing the largest business of any assurance office in the British empire. The accumulated fund amounts to £759,768, the number of policies being over 43,000. Considering that the society started in 1849 upon a very small basis, the growth is has attained is a striking evidence alike to the prudence

of the management, the progress of the colony, and the provident habits of the people.

Community First Responders

C.F.R. / S.E.S.

These blokes and women do an absolutely fantastic and critical job in responding to medical emergencies in this area and dedicate a lot of

their personal time in an effort to help and protect members of this, and other, communities.

C.F.R. Members are also member of the S.E.S., and are further trained in advanced First Aid techniques by the NSW Ambulance Service

and could be called upon to provide advanced first aid at roadside collisions and other emergencies in areas where there is no immediate

State ambulance service available or close by.

C.F.R. Members also have a positive working relationship with local Police, Ambulance and other emergency services.

In order to keep this vital C.F.R. Active in this community, further volunteers are urgently required. If you are interested in this line of

Due to increasing demand, Home Care Community Transport will now be operating a fortnightly Bungonia, Bungonia Heights, Windellama, Tarago Bus Run on the first & third Thursdays of the month.

Service started on Thursday 20 June 2013.

A fortnightly service will continue from that date & pick ups will commence from 9am, stopping along the way to collect booked clients and then proceed into Goulburn.

The Bus will leave Goulburn, for the return journey, at 2pm.

Please call the Community Transport office on 48240140 to book your place. This service can be utilised by anyone for your shop-ping, access or medical appointment needs for a small fee and they will pick you up from your property door.

About 6.15pm on 21st September 2014 a single unit police crew

have spoken to male driver in a blue Toyota sedan which was

stopped on Lockyer St Goulburn, near the Shell Service Station.

Whilst police were issuing traffic offences and other related notic-

es, the driver has started to become aggressive. He has started to abuse & push the police officer. A struggle has ensued, and on

lookers have called triple zero for police assistance. Police have

continued to wrestle with the driver, who has swung punches and

continued to yell & swear. A member of the public has come to

the aid of police & tackled the legs of the driver helping the of-

ficer in gaining control of the driver. The driver was eventually

handcuffed, although he continued to yell abuse. Soon after other

police crews have arrived, & conveyed the driver to Goulburn

Police Station where he was charged for a number of offences.

About 2pm on Saturday 20th September 2014 police were notified

by Corrective Services of a group of prisoners refusing to comply

with officers directions whilst in a yard area of Goulburn Gaol.

Corrective service officers were required to deploy a gas to gain

compliance from the inmates. About 4pm later that date, the in-

mates complied and returned to their cells with no reported inju-

ries. Police were not required to attend. Further investigation into

the matter is underway with police & corrective services working

together.

Summer is fast approaching and the possibility of bush fires and other local hazards will be upon us.

It was only January 2013 when we had our last Catastrophic

Hazard Warning and that is where the EWN system came into use, warning the 225 registered local users of warnings

and events as they unfolded - in order to keep those members

aware of any possible dangers around them.

As the local Administrator of the EWN, I am asking those

225 members who are already registered to update their in-formation with me if it has changed at all; i.e., your mobile

phone number, home / office number, any email address’s,

next of kin, allergies, emergency contact details etc.

If you are not already registered for this free local service

then simply send an email to Bungonia@Gmail.com and I

will place you and your family on the alter system.

There is absolutely no SPAM or Advertising associated with

this free service. It is simply a service whereby messages can be delivered in a timely fashion to multiple users at the

SAME TIME, via email, SMS, land line ( computer generat-

ed voice messages ).

When I become aware of an emergency or other local inci-

dent that may impact upon the safe passage or safety of local

road / property users, I have the ability to send out messages

to everyone on the list or to certain people who may be in the path of a fire or hail storm etc. and warn them of the impend-

ing danger via a mapping system.

I have the ability to circle, tear drop or box in any area and type up the message and anyone within that circle etc, will

receive the message.

If you are outside of that area, then the emergency should not

be impacting you.

This is also good for weekenders. People who are not here

all the time but if your property is marked upon my maps,

then you will receive via email, sms etc, the local alerts that

are broadcasted.
