Presidents Report Hello Members, I am sure you all had a very busy time over the Christmas, New Year period. I’m wishing you all a happy new year and look forward to catching up in 2017 at one of the clubs many events. We have a Bully Walk happening on January 29th at Jells Park and are organising more of these events throughout the year, so I hope to meet many more people at these social days. Not too mention the Trophy Show which is being held by The Bull Terrier Club of South Australia in early March, our Club show is in May with Australian judges and this looks to be another great weekend. The club is always looking for members to take on an active role and get involved with the running of the club, so we’d love for more people to put their hand up and come on committee. You’d be welcomed with open arms. Look forward to a busy Bully year, Lance Stephenson.

Secretary Report

Hi Members, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Mine was hectic, with a litter of puppies ready to go straight after Christmas, but then I must sympathise with Jacqui our Promo Officer who had seventeen puppies, I only had eight! Between Jacqui and myself, we have bought club memberships for all our puppy buyers, something that we have both been doing for years. This introduces people to the club and hopefully the club manages to retain one or two of those members who maybe will go on to become interested in showing and breeding and the breed is preserved. A couple of other breeders have also been doing this which is fantastic, I hope to see more doing it in the future. A week after all my puppies left, I also had the pleasure of homing an older bitch that I bred the year before although it was nearly a disaster story! Lilli was a singleton that came back to me at six months of age. Whilst not a show contender, she had the most beautiful temperament ever and was so smart and gentle around my toddler. I just knew she was only going to the most special of homes and that the right person would contact me when the time was right. She lived with me for over six months and during that time I taught her to sit (a novelty because I don’t teach my show dogs to sit) and gave her some inside manners. Initially enquiring about my puppies but also interested in an older bitch, a lovely couple from South Australia were interested and after I sent pictures and videos of Lilli they fell in love with her. They drove all the way over to get her in 36 degree heat and Lilli must have sensed something was going on because just as they were about to put the lead on her, she managed to dash out the front door and sprint up the street and around the block as fast as she could! It was a hard slog running after her in the heat with a long skirt and thongs on but fortunately she did stop (without encountering a car) and came back to us. I am happy to report that she is now enjoying life on the couch watching movies with her new owners and has a giant grassy backyard to play in, and probably thinking “Thank goodness I came back!” And I am not showing the photos to my other dogs as they will probably move out in a jealous rage, no one gets to sit on my couch at home, I like one hair free place to myself! Critiques… BULL TERRIER CLUB OF VICTORIA, INC. CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW NOVEMBER 19, 2016 JUDGE: MRS. CLAUDIA J. SHARP I would like to thank the Bull Terrier Club Victoria, Inc. for inviting me to judge this show. It was a pleasure to judge. Thank you to our hosts Neil and Kaye McCracken for their hospitality. Last but not least, thank you to the exhibitors for their quality entry. A few general comments… There were very few mouth faults and I commend you for taking bite seriously. I did see a couple of in-standing canines. This is an issue I feel is very detrimental to the breed as it can cause serious health problems. Overall, the quality was excellent, short backs, good toplines and strong rears. Some decisions were quite difficult as I liked qualities in each entry. Unfortunately, only one can win. Brittle bones in Australian Bull Terriers Professor Claire Wade University of Sydney

Recently a litter of Bull Terriers was born with six puppies in Australia and of these six pups; five were born with “brittle bones”. The puppies were breaking their legs when they learned to stand and each affected pup suffered multiple and ongoing fractures. The breeder spent a large amount of money to survive two of the affected pups. The surviving affected pups have ongoing difficulties. A second litter of eight pups had issues with pups falling and suffering ongoing lameness. By eight weeks multiple pups needed to be euthanized. Two older surviving pups needed to have their hip joints removed. The symptoms described are characteristic of disorders caused by defects in genes that make collagen. The symptoms in the first litter are akin to those that might be called osteogenesis imperfecta in some breeds. Legg Calve Perthes Disease is another disorder with similar symptoms to the second litter. Both of these disorders in humans can be caused by defects in the similar genes. Sometimes the genetic changes are spontaneous (this means that they have not been passed down in the usual way but have occurred as new accidental changes in the DNA). However, similar disorders in other breeds are recessive, and this means that they can be passed through families via animals that are normal themselves. Our goal is to discover which scenario is the case in these Bull Terrier families. Knowing the answer will help us to prevent the problem(s) from re-occurring. We are seeking cooperation from breeders with pups experiencing the same or similar symptoms. To help, we would love to obtain blood samples (if this is not possible we can make alternative arrangements) from the dogs in the families. For people in Melbourne or Sydney we can organise blood collection for free. The blood sample should be collected in an EDTA tube. The sample can be shipped by regular mail but must be in two separate layers of waterproof packaging with absorbent material between the layers. All samples must be accompanied by a permission form that I can supply. We would also be grateful to receive any x-ray images or veterinary reports from dogs with the disorders. Please email me at claire.wade@sydney.edu.au if you might be able to help. It would also be helpful if breed clubs could assist in funding our research. We hope to keep the costs very low and think that we will need around $5000 to do an initial screen to help identify the mutation(s). I have a student available to help with the project in 2017 No collaborating breeders will be identified and all communications are confidential.

Note to Members and Breeders: The Bull Terrier Club have DNA swab kits available for all breeders or owners of Pedigree bull terriers wishing to submit DNA samples from their animals to Animal Health Trust. The sample kits include a contact details form and five DNA swabs. A copy of pedigree and any health information is required with DNA submission. Kits may be taken home for completion and posting back to the UK. It is relatively cheap to post the kits and as the samples are stable once taken, they can be sent by general mail. We can also post them out to any breeders interested in providing this valuable DNA to researchers who have the best interests of our breed at heart.

The Big Day Out for Dogs On December 11th 2016 The Bull Terrier Club of Victoria attended the Big Day Out for Dogs at KCC Park. This event was once again run like clockwork by Dogs Victoria. These days are an integral part of the club prompting our breed, information and

education are a key to our breeds future.

It was once again attended by our hard working committee & club volunteers, setting up, packing up, answering questions and generally hanging around. It was a hot & sunny day and there were plenty of interested people coming over for a pat of the Bullies. Everyone had a story to share of the Bully that lived round the corner when they grew up, or that they had these dogs as kids.

Another great day put on by Dogs Victoria, these events are getting bigger and bigger each year and certainly are a great way for the public to meet the breeds and gather further information about them.
